G. Gordon Liddy, Convicted Watergate Operative, Dies at 90
Image
G. Gordon Liddy, the colorful chief operative in the Watergate scandal who went to prison for his crimes and later cut a wide swatch across pop culture as a talk show host and actor, has died. He was 90.

His son, Thomas P. Liddy, confirmed his death to the Washington Post, but did not provide a cause.

Liddy held many roles during his lifetime, including as a lawyer, FBI agent, talk show host and actor. However, he is best known as the chief operative in the Nixon administration’s White House Plumbers unit, which organized and carried out a burglary of the DNC headquarters in the Watergate building. The scandal rocked American politics and led to Nixon’s resignation from the presidency in 1974. Liddy was ultimately convicted of conspiracy, burglary, illegal wiretapping and refused to testify during the Senate committee hearing on the scandal. As a result, Liddy served over four years in prison.

‘Nightmares’ Blu-ray Review (101 Films)
Stars: Lance Henriksen, Veronica Cartwright, Cristina Raines, Joe Lambie, Anthony James, Richard Masur, Lee Ving, Moon Unit Zappa, Emilio Estevez | Written by Christopher Crowe, Jeffrey Bloom | Directed by Joseph Sargent

While it may be hard to believe that less than a decade ago Nightmares was one of The most sought after, most-requested titles for re-release, after watching this 80s anthology it’s easy to see why. Very much part of the 70s and early 80s portmenteau film vogue, which gave us the likes of Trilogy of Terror, Creepshow and its sequel, The Twilght Zone and Cats Eye, Nightmares features four stories that riff on pre-existing themes:

Terror in Topanga is a take on the “killer is in the house” trope; whilst The Bishop of Battle plays on the perils of obsession and the early-80s belief that video games were “evil”. The Benediction is a quasi-religious version of Richard Matheson...

Paul Thomas Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson’s New Short Film ‘Valentine’ Is an Exquisite Rock Opera
Paul Thomas Anderson
No one has cooler side projects than Paul Thomas Anderson. Last November, shortly before starting production on his still untitled London fashion drama with Daniel Day-Lewis, Anderson directed the short film “Valentine,” a behind-the-scenes look at the pop rock band Haim recording three songs for their recent album “Something to Tell You.” Anderson also collaborated with Radiohead on three videos last year for songs off their acclaimed album “A Moon Shaped Pool.”

Haim released the first four and a half minutes of the short film as a music video for their song “Right Now” in April, though “video” is a bit of a misnomer, as Anderson shot “Valentine” on beautiful 35mm.

“This short plays well with concert films, musicals, late night shows, sing-a-longs and a glass of beer,” reads a description on the 35mm print canister.

Mike Gold: America Drinks and Goes Home
It’s been quite a while since I’ve plopped my butt down on an airline seat. There are several reasons for this, the primary one being I loathe being treated like shit.

As we have seen from all too many recent incidents, once onboard airplane employees have complete control over your fate. If you do not promptly obey their every command or, say, object to their anti-peanut policy, they can and will have you arrested. If somebody on the plane thinks you look weird, or you look like a Muslim or some other type of person they find noxious, they will complain to a flight attendant. If you have yet to take-off, the airplane Nazis will call the goon squad and have you taken off the plane, sometimes by force. If you’re in the air, you likely will be arrested when the plane lands. Paranoid Fox News watchers,...

The Man in the Moon (1991)
Robert Mulligan’s late career gem is a beautiful, fad-free tale of teenage romance with universal appeal, famed for introducing Reese Witherspoon to the screen. She’s truly a sensation, as is the actress Emily Warfield as the older sister who ‘steals’ Reese’s beau. Photographed by Freddie Francis, this tops even Mulligan’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

Doctor Who Season 10 Episode 3 Review: Thin Ice
With a history as long and complex as Doctor Who has, each episode can become something of a trial for writers: acknowledging past adventures while simultaneously crafting a new and intriguing story.

Unfortunately, Doctor Who Season 10 Episode 3 really strayed too far into whole plot references to be altogether enjoyable for its own sake.

"Thin Ice" featured the Doctor and Bill visiting the Frost Fair in 1814 and discovering that there was an enormous creature under the ice, being fed people in order to produce fuel for the engines of London.

If this premise sounds vaguely familiar, it should.

In Doctor Who Season 5 Episode 2, "The Beast Below," the Doctor and Amy visited Starship UK and discovered that the "ship" was actually built on the back of a massive spacefaring creature which was being fed people...

And later in this episode, the Doctor asked Bill to make the choice for what to do about the unfortunate creature,...

5 things you need to know right now about The Chainsmokers’ “#Selfie”
Steve Aoki in I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (2016)
It’s such a ubiquitous, of-the-moment idea that it’s hard to believe no one thought of it before: The Chainsmokers’ song and video, “#Selfie,” perfectly captures people’s ongoing obsession of posting self-portraits of themselves onto social media. It’s no surprise that a song that simultaneously celebrates and lampoons our narcissism is having its day, even if it will very quickly be resigned to a pop culture footnote. Here are 5 things you need to know about “#Selfie”: 1. The two men behind the sensation are Drew Taggart and Alex Pall, collectively known as The Chainsmokers. The DJs recorded a demo of the pulsing dance track, added in an intentionally comedic narcissistic woman totally obsessed with herself in the club discussing her every move, then posted the tune on SoundCloud, as well as shorter version on Vine and Instagram, and the song took off after being picked up by...

Will You Love North West? 5 Other Celeb Baby Names That Grew On Us
We definitely need a minute to get used to the fact that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named their daughter North West. (Especially since we were sure they were going with Khrist!) But maybe after the initial shock subsides, we’ll learn to love that adorable pun. Moon Unit Zappa: Frank Zappa’s daughter, born in 1967, is the epitome of flower child names. But if it weren’t for her spacey name, she would probably fade from memory.

Ten Out-of-Print Horror Flicks to Make You Drool
Dolls (1986)
As a horror fan and collector, one of the things I find utterly maddening is discovering that a title I’m dying to add to my collection is out of print and selling for a fortune. Rather than do the sane thing, and wait for the film to be re-issued, I usually cough up absolutely idiotic sums of money, because I am reckless, impatient, and highly impulsive. Since I am also thoughtful, I have compiled a guide to out of print titles (Oop), the going rate, and more. Included in the list below are ten films in various stages of manufacturing moratorium. Several of them are recently out of print, so we are providing you a ‘heads’ up to so that you have the opportunity to snag them before they become hideously expensive.

Woody Harrelson Did Shrooms With Ted Danson, Made All Of Cheers Crush On Him Back In The Day
We really wonder how Jennifer Lawrence would have reacted if Woody Harrelson brought some of these antics to the Hunger Games set. According to the Cheers Oral History in this month’s issue of GQ, Woody was quite an interesting influence on his castmates when he joined the sitcom in 1985, when Cheers was in its fourth season, and he was an enthusiastic 24-year-old.

“I was very excited by this newfound ability to hang out with gals who probably wouldn’t have hung out with me before,” Harrelson told the magazine. “I became a party animal. You couldn’t do what I did now because of all the tweeting and Facebooking. All the sh– I did back then, I’d be hung from the rafters.”

Star Ted Danson in particular had a story that would have driven the Internet crazy, if it existed at the time. “I’ll tell you about...

'Saturday Night Live': Josh Brolin was supposedly guest host
"Saturday Night Live" has a pretty consistent format. They hire a guest host. Said guest host appears in many of the sketches, gets laughs and simultaneously is able to promote his or her latest project. Josh Brolin's appearance on the sketch comedy show on Saturday (April 14) seemed to break the mold as he barely showed up. When he did, Brolin was fine, but his absence was noticeable.

Here are our thoughts on the most recent "SNL":

The Good

Cold Open: With Mitt Romney having all but sewn up the Republican nomination, 'SNL' decided to have all their candidate impersonators get back together for one more sentimental moment at the bar. It was sweet, funny and the time of their lives.

Monologue: It started off completely uneventful with Brolin saying things like "how about that weather." It made a quick turn around when Jay Pharoah came out...

The Valley Girl has dumped the rock star. Moon Unit Zappa filed for divorce from Matchbox Twenty guitarist Paul Doucette last month after nine and a half years of marriage, E! News confirmed Wednesday. And her reason for the split? Zappa cited irreconcilable differences, according to court documents filed Dec. 27, because...that's pretty much what everyone cites. She and Doucette, who tied the knot on June 1, 2002, have a daughter together, 7-year-old Mathilda Plum Doucette. Zappa also requested that the court terminate Doucette's right to spousal support. The artist and singer-actress is the eldest daughter of late rocker Frank Zappa, and therefore the older sister of the...

Video of 1982 Miss Valley Girl Competition: Twi-Hards don't seem so annoying now, do they?
Sarah Purcell, Byron Allen, John Barbour, Bill Rafferty, and Skip Stephenson in Real People (1979)
Yesterday, Jezebel unearthed this nearly 30-year-old video from Real People chronicling the 1982 Miss Valley Girl Competition in Encino, Calif. Watch it to hear such “Val” expressions as “Bag your face!” and “Gag Me With a Spoon” screeched by Moon Unit Zappa in a decibel likely to attract the nearest canine, and you’ll begin to think those crazy Twilight kids are somewhat sane after all.

Name Game: Celebrities Have Nothing on the Rest of Us
Moon Unit Zappa
Much has been made in recent years of the proclivity of celebrities to give their children unusual names. Who among us wasn't at least a little befuddled upon first encountering the names Moon Unit Zappa and Moxie Crimefighter Jillette? Contrary to popular belief, though, celebrities have nothing on the rest of us. Distinctive names have been with us through the ages. Want proof? I submit the following: Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were far from the first to add an Apple to their family tree. A quick search reveals 32 Apples in the 1930 census and 24 in the Social Security Death Index (including an Apple Pie). Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf named their son Pilot Inspekter in 2003, but Pilot Light of Tennessee was born 101 years earlier. Paris? Dallas? Brooklyn? Naming offspring after locations...

Trio fight for estate in 'Last Will'
Tatum O'Neal
New York -- Tatum O'Neal, Tom Berenger and James Brolin will face deception, corruption and misguided family loyalties in the indie suspense drama "Last Will."

Brigitte Nielsen, Patrick Muldoon, William Shockley, Jeffery Dean, Shawn Huff and Moon Unit Zappa round out director Brent Huff's ensemble cast.

"Will" centers on Hayden (O'Neal), a woman framed for the murder of her wealthy husband (Berenger) in their affluent Midwestern town. With all evidence stacked against her, she's arrested by a detective (Brolin) and begins a quest to uncover the truth.

Landing the central role in "Will" is a triumph for the Apa/Untitled-repped O'Neal. It is her first film since pleading guilty in the summer to disorderly conduct and entering rehab after attempting to purchase drugs.

O'Neal, who recurs role on FX's "Rescue Me," next appears in the indie drama "Saving Grace B. Jones."

Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Luke Wilson, Matthew Davis, Samantha Lemole, Meredith Scott Lynn, and Osgood Perkins in Legally Blonde (2001)
Legally Blonde beauty Selma Blair has married her rocker beau Ahmet Zappa in a low-key ceremony at actress Carrie Fisher's Beverly Hills mansion. Blair, 31, and her 29-year-old boyfriend of just six months were due to exchange nuptials at the Ritz-Carlton in Marina Del Ray, California, but switched locations at the last minute. A source says, "Selma wore a simple gown with no veil." The pal adds that the guest list for the traditional Jewish ceremony "was very small" and included Zappa's sister Moon Unit and brother Dweezil with girlfriend Lisa Loeb.
