‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ becomes biggest film in China since Chinese New Year
Image
Jurassic World Rebirth has become the biggest release in China since the peak Chinese New Year season as local films struggle to ignite the summer box office.

Universal’s dinosaur tentpole took a cumulative $64.6m (RMB463m) as of July 14, narrowly beating Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, which took $64.5m (RMB462m). It now ranks as the seventh highest grossing film of 2025 after five Chinese New Year hits led by local animated feature Ne Zha 2.

More significantly, Jurassic World Rebirth is set to surpass the landmark RMB500m ($69.8m), a milestone no release – local or...

Michelle Yeoh Movie With 98% Rt Score Is The Top-Ranked Martial Arts Film Of The 21st Century
Image
Michelle Yeoh leads an Oscar-winning kung-fu movie that has recently been named the genre's best of the 21st century. Yeoh's movie career began with her amazing roles in martial arts movies, like Police Story 3: Supercop alongside Jackie Chan. While she has moved away from the genre later in her career, one title remains among her most acclaimed movies.

There have been some great recent kung-fu movies, but few from the 21st century have matched the impact of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film stars Yeoh, alongside Chow Yun-fat and Zhang Ziyi, in a story set in Imperial China. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

25 years after its release, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has been named as one of the best movies of the 21st century. The new poll from The New York Times compiled the rankings based on votes from industry figures.

Zhang Ziyi, Peter Chan’s ‘She’s Got No Name’ Debuts Atop China Box Office
Image
Zhang Ziyi’s highly anticipated return to the big screen with the period drama “She’s Got No Name” powered its way to the top of the China box office over the June 20–22 weekend, opening with RMB173.8 million ($24.1 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.

The film, which reunites Zhang with acclaimed director Peter Chan Ho-sun, marks one of the strongest local debuts of the summer season so far. Imax accounted for $2.6 million of the China box office from 690 screens.

Based on one of China’s most famous unsolved murder cases, the film centers on Zhan-Zhou (Zhang Ziyi), a wife charged with the bloody dismemberment of her husband during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in the 1940s – a killing that seems impossible for her to have committed alone. The murder thrusts Zhan-Zhou into the spotlight and the court of public opinion, forcing her towards a fate intertwined with that of her own country.

Peter Chan’s Noir Drama ‘She’s Got No Name’ Debuts in Shanghai After “Experimental” Two-Part Overhaul
Image
A mystery has been resolved this week at the Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff) as Peter Chan’s reworked version of She’s Got No Name helped open the event, before going on an almost-immediate limited release on 120 screens spread across this vast city.

The acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker’s decision to split the film — which made its premiere out of competition at Cannes in 2024 — into two parts had raised eyebrows, as did the news that the first installment would take the marquee billing at China’s major annual cinema gathering.

In the end, it all makes sense.

While the Cannes version’s 150-minute running time and twisting narrative arc had prompted questions of the film’s commercial potential, the version of She’s Got No Name that screened at Siff comes in at a tight — and tense — 96 minutes that dig deep into the darkness of the real-life tale of an abused woman,...

Peter Chan Fulfills Father’s Shanghai Dreams With ‘She’s Got No Name,’ After Decade-Long Journey From Script to Screen: ‘It Got Personal’
Image
Peter Chan Ho-sun’s “She’s Got No Name,” which opened this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival, represents one of the most tortuous paths from page to screen in recent memory.

In an extensive interview with Variety, Chan reveals the decade-long journey that transformed a single screenplay into a two-part film, involving multiple format changes, extensive re-editing, and unprecedented collaboration with Shanghai’s municipal government.

The project began in 2015 when Chan received a complete screenplay based on a real 1945 murder case that spanned nearly six decades of Chinese history. “The script came to me, which is rare. I usually develop my own script, even though I don’t write myself, but I usually have an idea, and I have writers develop with me along the way,” Chan says. “And this is the first time that I actually got a complete script with a novella about the real case that happened...

Peace Takes Center Stage as Tornatore Opens Record-Breaking Shanghai Film Festival
Giuseppe Tornatore
Shanghai—The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival opened on 13 June with jury president Giuseppe Tornatore hailing the gathering as “a powerful message of peace and coexistence” amid global strife.

The Oscar-winning Italian raised a toast—“To Shanghai! To peace! And to the eternal power of cinema!”—at the Gala Night on 14 June, cheered by a red-carpet crowd that included Andy Lau, Zhang Ziyi and more than 200 other luminaries.

Marking 130 years of world cinema and 120 years of Chinese film, this edition received a record 3,900 submissions from 119 nations; 410 titles are screening in 43 theatres across the city until 22 June.

Twelve features—eleven world premieres and one international—are vying for the Golden Goblet, to be judged by a seven-member panel that pairs Tornatore with artists from China, India, Argentina, Greece and others.

“There is no pre-established rule,” Tornatore told reporters, pledging that the jury will “devote ourselves to the experience” rather than formulas.

The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival kicked off with a galaxy of Chinese stars present and a heartfelt message of peace from jury president Giuseppe Tornatore.

The festival was officially declared open by Gong Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai.

Image
Imagine watching Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, thinking, “Wow, what an interesting anthology of terrifying, mysterious scenarios wrapped in a neat little multiverse mystery box.” Now imagine getting The Cloverfield Paradox, a film that feels like that mystery box was dropped, kicked into space, and exploded in a microwave filled with bad ideas. Welcome to the most baffling entry in a once-promising franchise: The Cloverfield Paradox—a movie so surprising it was announced, advertised, and released within the span of a single Super Bowl night in 2018. Today, on Horror Revisited, we’re diving headfirst into its confusing creation, Netflix dumping, dimensional weirdness, and why even talented actors can’t save a script that plays like it...

Ang Lee Reveals Why ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Restored His Faith In Filmmaking: “I’m Still Standing, Still Making Movies, Thanks To That Movie”
Image
Two of Ang Lee’s most disruptive films celebrate anniversaries this year; they may be five years apart, but the connective tissue between them is undeniable. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) was such an intense high-wire act, the grueling shoot in China left Lee barely able to stand and fully intending to give it all up. It was Lee’s father who made his son promise to try one more time, because retirement, he thought, would set a bad example for the filmmaker’s son. Lee’s father died in 2004, weeks after making his son promise to give it one more go, and Lee kept that promise with 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, an experience that made the filmmaker fall back in love with storytelling, fueling everything he has done since including Life of Pi, which brought him his second Oscar for directing.

When I meet Lee in his Manhattan offices, he is...

‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Series in the Works for Amazon Prime Video
Image
A new series is in the works based on the books that inspired Ang Lee’s 2000 classic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

The series is in development from Sony Pictures Television and is intended for release via Amazon Prime Video. Though Amazon has been good about mining the IP from the MGM library, it was Sony Pictures Classics that originally released Lee’s film.

Jason Ning, a producer on “Lucifer,” is the writer and executive producer on the new “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” series, which will be based on five Crane-Iron Pentalogy book series by author Wang Dulu. The film from 2000 was based on the fourth book in the series, also titled “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” that was serialized beginning in 1941.

The film was set in 19th century Imperialist China and followed two master warriors and their forbidden love after the...

One Of The Best Martial Arts Movies Ever Is Getting A TV Series From A Star Trek Veteran
Image
Conventional wisdom dictates that there's no way to improve on perfection, but since when has that ever stopped streaming companies when there's money to be made? In today's latest instance of truly nothing being sacred anymore, Deadline has revealed the news that Prime Video is moving forward with a series adaptation of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," the story made most famous by director Ang Lee's soaring, sumptuous, and sweepingly romantic wuxia classic. The 2000 film was based on the Chinese novel of the same name by author Wang Dulu, which was actually the fourth installment of a larger saga called the "Crane-Iron Series." This new streaming show will apparently take its cues from that original source material, as opposed to simply remaking the film.

Regardless of whether this is merely a brazen IP grab or a truly inspired attempt to modernize a seriously compelling story, however, there's no denying the...

‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Series in the Works at Amazon
Image
Prime Video is looking to bring the world of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to TV screens.

The Amazon-owned streamer and Sony Pictures Television are developing a series adaptation of the story, based on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy series of novels by Wang Dulu. The books also served as source material for Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 film.

Jason Ning (Lucifer, The Brother Sun) is writing and will executive produce alongside Ron Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica). Both have overall deals at Sony, which released Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon through its Sony Pictures Classics label and owns rights to the Crane-Iron books.

The logline for the potential series reads, “Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity — caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”

'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' Series Now in Development at Prime Video
Image
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which brought the magic of wuxia to worldwide audiences 25 years ago, is coming to the small screen. A TV adaptation of the novels the film was based on is in the works at Prime Video. Deadline reports that Jason Ning (Lucifer) and Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind) are both attached to the project.

The film was based on the Crane-Iron Series, a series of five interlinked books written by Chinese novelist Wang Dulu in the 1940s. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the fourth book in the series. The project has been in the works for some time at Sony, which released Ang Lee's Oscar-winning film adaptation in 2000. Ning is on an overall deal with Sony and has been with the project since its inception; Battlestar Galactica creator Moore, who recently signed his own deal with Sony, came on board last year. 15 Best Movies Like Troy
Image
Wolfgang Petersen's "Troy" is a relic of a time when the Hollywood epic was still a healthy, consolidated institution -- before the superhero boom largely replaced it with "grounded," smaller-scale, mostly-contemporary set blockbusters. Starring Brad Pitt as Achilles, Diane Kruger as Helen, Eric Bana as Hector, Orlando Bloom as Paris, Brian Cox as Agamemnon, Sean Bean as Odysseus, and a host of legends including Peter O'Toole and Julie Christie in smaller roles, Petersen's 2004 film offers a loose, condensed reimagining of Homer's "Iliad," chronicling the most legendary of all ancient conflicts: the Trojan War.

While full of historical and literary liberties, "Troy" is a muscular, stirring movie that, seen today, feels like a throwback to a time when American tentpole movies were still driven by a chief concern to be fun. In that spirit, here are 15 other cinematic epics and historical blockbusters that will also show you a great,...

The 27 Best Kung Fu Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
Though they have their roots in Chinese cinema, kung fu movies have become iconic and beloved the world over. From gravity-defying stunts to high-flying kicks, these films have captivated audiences for decades with their mesmerizing style. Some of the best kung fu movies were also responsible for turning now well-known screen legends into household names, such as Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee.

The kung fu film genre gained prominence in the early '70s following the waning popularity of the wuxia films, characterized by their supernatural tropes of Chinese myths and legends. As more hard-hitting kung fu action reached the international shores, the martial arts subgenre brought a cultural revolution to cinematic history. Several of these films came to be adored across the globe, but only the best kung fu movies, like Enter the Dragon, have truly withstood the test of time.

10 Best Action Movie Couples of All Time, Ranked
Image
Romance and action may seem like separate genres, but the truth is they regularly go hand in hand. Most action films see their characters thrown into dangerous and fast-paced situations and, as it turns out, nothing brings people closer together, quite like a near-death experience.

While the genre has seen plenty of heroes 'get the girl' by saving damsels in distress, the best action couples are composed of two people who are strong, smart, and capable in their own right. While these people may initially hate each other or even be outright enemies, by the time the credits roll, their journey has taught them to respect one another and helped them to develop feelings.

If you missed 'Rush Hour 2' before then here is why you should watch now
Image
Rush Hour 2 needs no introduction. When the first movie came out in 1998, no one could have imagined the acclaim and success it would achieve – earning millions at the box office and basically begging for the next part. Usually, nothing exceptional ever comes out of sequels and neither is it expected.

Almost every time, the virgin feeling of the movie concept is absent, the storyline is on a similar pattern, there is no plot mystery and the viewer's feeling for expecting something new is usually not there. It is because, in most cases, the second or third part feels like the continuation of the same idea or maybe something new but on a slightly different tangent. Rush Hour 2 feels just like that. However, it is not implied in any way that the movie is bad – In fact the complete opposite.

You will find watching Rush Hour 2 like coming...

The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in January 2025
Image
Welp, it’s January. That special time of year where everyone is simultaneously recovering from the holidays and trying to kick off the new year by putting their best foot forward. TV shows that have been on break will soon return and mid-season premieres quickly follow thereafter, but for film, January is often looked at as slow period for new releases, with offerings like “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man,” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” being unveiled. Films that have had awards-qualifying runs like Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths” and Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” will also expand wider, boosting their profiles in time for Oscar voting, but generally, there’s not much going on to excite the average movie-goer this month. So what better time to say, “Out with the new, in with the old!”

Repertory theaters in New York and Los Angeles have...

A polarizing MonsterVerse installment has been one of the most-watched movies on Netflix since Christmas Day. Earlier this year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debuted to mixed critical reviews but was financially successful, becoming the highest-grossing MonsterVerse film to date.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is currently third on Netflix's Top 10 chart, only behind Carry-On and Kerry Washington's The Six Triple Eight. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film is a direct sequel to 2021's Godzilla x Kong and is the fifth film in the shared Monsterverse franchise. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong encounters more of his species in the Hollow Earth and must again ally with Godzilla to stop the tyrannical Skar King and the powerful, frost-breathing Shimo from invading the Earth's surface. Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle all reprise their roles from the previous film and are joined by Dan Stevens,...

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' to Stream for Free on Tubi on January 1
Image
Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in 2019 as the direct sequel to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, which had mostly positive reviews, despite being deemed a "slow burn" and lacking monster fights. King of the Monsters looked to up the ante in every way possible, focusing on an entirely new group of human characters and pitting classic kaiju against Godzilla. Armed with fanservice and jaw-dropping visual effects, King of the Monsters had everything going for it, but sometimes more doesn't mean better. It proved to be a divisive entry into the then-young movie franchise, a crowd-pleasing affair that lacked depth despite its best efforts. However, even the most cynical Godzilla fans can find plenty to enjnoy in the film, which will be arriving on the ad-supported free streaming service Tubi on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2025.

Preceded by arguably one of the better trailers in the past decade, Godzilla: King of the Monsters...

The 10 Greatest Rivalries In Martial Arts Movies
Image
Martial arts movies have had a huge impact on the cultural zeitgeist ever since they first made their way to the screen, creating some iconic rivalries in the process. The best martial arts movies have transcended decades, broken boundaries and impacted most other styles of film in one way or another. From the classics of wuxia, the rise of kung fu in the 70s and 80s, as well as the modern Mma landscape, these films have produced many superstars and supervillains.

Rivalries in martial arts movies have been as riveting as theyve been brutal. Iconic match-ups like Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan vs. Ken Lo, and Michelle Yeoh vs. Ziyi Zhang, have brought to life battles that made audiences feel the emotion in every single roundhouse kick. While a period drama might rely heavily on dialogue, and a comedy will require jokes and visual gags, martial arts films...

Is There Another King Ghidorah In The Monsterverse? Forgotten Kotm Tease Set Up A Future Godzilla Rival
Image
A forgotten tease from five years ago laid the groundwork for another version of King Ghidorah to appear in the Monsterverse. In Godzilla: KIng of the Monsters, Legendary's Monsterverse introduced its take on King Ghidorah as an ancient rival to Godzilla. Not unlike the way its Toho counterpart is traditionally depicted, this incarnation of Monster Zero is a creature from a distant planet. As the only known alien Titan in the Monsterverse, Ghidorah has a certain uniqueness to him, but interestingly, there have been indications that perhaps Ghidorah isn't the outlier he originally seemed to be.

The idea of Ghidorah not being alone goes beyond the notion that the creature may have shared the Earth with other alien Titans. In fact, there could be other creatures of the same species out there in the Monsterverse somewhere. The Monsterverse movies themselves haven't directly confirmed this as a fact, but the novelization...

10 Most Controversial Sci-Fi Movies of All Time
Image
This list includes discussions of serious and sensitive matters, both fictional and real. Proceed with caution.

Science-fiction, whether it's grounded or bombastic, is one of the few movie genres that's expected to push boundaries and defy conventions whenever it can. After all, sci-fi is a genre that's built on visions of the future or poignant mirrors of the present. These forward-thinking expectations don't just apply to the stories these movies tell, but to the filmmaking technology they use to bring their worlds to life as well. Unsurprisingly, it's for these very same reasons that some sci-fi movies become historically controversial.

These sci-fi movies are entertaining or even great when viewed in a vacuum, but they caused such a ruckus when they were still in cinemas that their positive qualities tend to be overlooked or outright forgotten. At times, the movie in question and its filmmakers did nothing wrong. The movie...

Oscars 2025: Italy selects ‘Vermiglio’ as Best International Feature Film entry
Image
Italy has selected “Vermiglio” as the country’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The movie written and directed by Maura Delpero won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and will make its stateside debut at the Hamptons International Film Festival on October 10.

“Vermiglio” is set in 1944, in Vermiglio, a high mountain village of the Italian Alps where war looms as a distant but constant threat. The arrival of Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a refugee soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the local teacher’s family, changing them forever. During the four seasons marking the end of World War II, Pietro and Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), the eldest daughter of the teacher, instantly drawn to each other, led to marriage and an unexpected fate. As the world emerges from its tragedy, the family will face its own.

10 Movies With A Way Higher Audience Score Than Critic Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
By now, it's rarely surprising to see critics and audiences respond vastly differently to films, as seen in the inconsistent scores on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Though audiences are left scratching their heads most of the time at the considerably large amount of praise given to films thought to be mediocre, there are a few times when the roles have been reversed. Audiences have been quick to give a positive response to films that left critics feeling unsatisfied. None of the selected films have been flat-out panned by critics, but the few redeeming qualities still weren't enough to earn a fresh score.

There are numerous explanations as to why critics and audiences review and score films differently, but the most logical explanation comes down to the role of the viewer. When watching a film as a critic, factors within the film are expected to be graded, such as the strength...

‘The Room Next Door’ Wins Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival — See All the Winners Here
Image
While last year’s strikes created a somewhat subdued energy on the Lido with very few talent able to be present, this year’s 2024 Venice Film Festival proved to hot and steamy. And we’re not just talking about the excessive heat movie stars and fan alike were subjected to. Films like Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller “Babygirl” and Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burrough’s short novel “Queer” aroused audience interest with career-best performances from Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig and highly revealing sexual interplay. However it was Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” that took home the coveted Golden Lion, marking the first time the filmmaker has won a top prize at any major festival throughout his career.

Brady Corbet returned to the Palazzo del Cinema with his four-hour post-wwii epic “The Brutalist,” which screened to rave reception and earned the director the Silver Lion,...

Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Wins Venice Golden Lion as Nicole Kidman Takes Best Actress — Full Winners List
Image
It has not been, it’s safe to say, an all-timer Venice Competition lineup. Despite that, rumor has it that the 81st edition’s jury, presided over by Isabelle Huppert and comprising filmmakers James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, Julia von Heinz and actress Zhang Ziyi, took some time to come to their decisions during a prolonged deliberation session yesterday.

Speculation was also rife that, insofar as festival juries pay much attention to precedent, due to the string of high-profile US films that have won Venice in recent years they might have been discouraged from awarding the top prize to another American, or even American-led movie.

That story shifted slightly in the days following the premiere of “The Brutalist,” as the 3h15m-long film, directed by Brady Corbet, starring Adrien Brody and described by Variety’s Owen Gleiberman as “paced with a pleasing...

Venice Jury President Isabelle Huppert Voices Concern for “Very Weak” State of Film Industry
Image
French screen icon Isabelle Huppert, president of the 81st Venice Film Festival’s main competition jury, took the stage Wednesday afternoon to share her thoughts on how she will approach her role as the event’s de facto artistic judge-in-chief. The gathering was marked by a triumphant tone from Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera, who sat by Huppert’s side and noted that his glamorous Italian festival will feature more big-name stars on its red carpet over the coming week than in any year of recent memory. But there was also a palpable undercurrent of angst over the myriad tech-driven business challenges that continue to roil the global independent film business.

“I’m worried about the things everyone is worried about — whether cinema can continue to survive — because it’s very weak now,” Huppert remarked early in the sitdown. “It’s very difficult to make a film. A film is not just an individual effort.

Isabelle Huppert & Venice Jury Members Share Concerns About “Very Weak” Condition Of Contemporary Cinema
Image
French acting legend Isabelle Huppert, who is president of the Venice Film Festival jury this year, was joined by her panelists as artistic director Alberto Barbera hosted the opening press conference for the 81st running of the event this morning. It’s a different look this year, with no one sporting Writers Guild strike T-shirts à la 2023.

This morning’s session was brief but earnest, with many of the jury members speaking about the concerns around the state of contemporary cinema.

“I’m worried about the things everyone is worried about. Making sure that cinema continues to live because it is very weak now,” Huppert said during the session.

“It’s very difficult to make a film. A film is not just an individual effort. It’s really something we deliver to the world. So I am concerned about whether our world will still connect with people. That’s why...

How Great Movies Get Made at Columbia: A Directors’ Tell-All

Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Ang Lee

Ang Lee was pulling his hair out. He was in preproduction in China on his ambitious martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when a silent investor pulled out. “It was the toughest movie I’d ever tried to make,” recalls Lee, who thought it was all over. But Columbia came to the rescue, thanks to a new initiative to assist local-language filmmaking in foreign markets. Gareth Wigan, a widely respected Sony exec, became involved, as did Barbara Robinson, who lived in Hong Kong and headed up Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, and was asked to meet with Lee in Taiwan. A coalition came together, including Columbia, China Film Co-Production Corp., Good Machine International, Edko Films and Zoom Hunt Productions. Michael Barker and Tom Bernard’s Sony Pictures Classics signed on to distribute Crouching Tiger domestically, while Columbia International handled international territories...

How the First Festival Champions the Cause of Independent Chinese Cinema
Image
Li Ziwei was taking the Mandarin Proficiency Test at Beijing’s Communication University of China when she first heard about plans to inaugurate what would evolve into the First International Film Festival.

That was 18 years ago and, as Li tells it, the landscape for cinema in China remained dominated solely by the major film and TV studios. But changes were afoot. Technology was increasingly allowing students to dream big as digital video (Dv) cameras, first, and later smartphones, brought filmmaking within reach.

First founder Song Wen began by launching a Student Dv Film Festival in Beijing before the First concept took shape. In the 18 years since its launch, the festival has carved a niche in Chinese cinema as the place where the “next generation” of talent is given its first time in the spotlight.

Li has worked alongside Song in her role as fest CEO. The festival has helped launch...
