Also featured in the sequel will be be cameos from Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, as well as appearances from Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman and Chris Addison.

Street Smart | The Christopher Reeve thriller that got made thanks to Superman IV
Image
Superman star Christopher Reeve played a much darker kind of journalist in 1987’s Street Smart – a fascinating thriller based on a pack of lies.

In 1969, the May edition of New York magazine ran a feature about a chap named Lamont: a 19 year-old African American who happened to be one of the city’s “most successful pimps.”

Making a then-huge $48,000 a year, Lamont lived like a king in a four-room Harlem apartment. The place was kitted out with a gigantic bed, expensive rugs and paintings. His Cadillac – with its leopard skin seats and booming speaker system – sat in the street outside, closely guarded by Lamont’s assistant and driver, a 15 year-old kid named Reggie.

The four-page piece, written by David Freeman, went into considerable detail about Lamont’s lifestyle, musical tastes and ways of doing business – the $750 per night he made from the five sex workers under his control, and...

This 1993 Classic About “America’s National Pastime” Is Hitting a Home Run on the Streaming Charts 32 Years Later
Image
It's July, and baseball season is in full swing, with the All-Star Game looming on the horizon. Combine that with the Fourth of July weekend, and viewers across America have decided that it's the perfect time to catch The Sandlot. The coming-of-age baseball classic is climbing up the streaming standings this week, and is currently the fifth-most-popular streaming movie on Disney+.

Part of a wave of baseball comedies that hit in the wake of the 1989 hit Major League – including Angels in the Outfield, Little Big League, and Rookie of the Year – The Sandlot was written, directed, and narrated by David Mickey Evans. It was the most successful of the lot, grossing $34 million Usd, and was also well-reviewed, currently holding a 66% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a retrospective review, Collider's Chase Hutchinson calls it "tightly written and sharply funny as it paints a portrait of youth that is sentimental without ever being superficial.

'This Is Spinal Tap' Goes to 41 With New Rerelease Trailer
Image
Get ready to smell the glove all over again. With a long-in-the-works sequel on the horizon, the original This Is Spinal Tap is rocking back into theaters for its 41st anniversary. A new trailer from Bleecker Street showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of the landmark mockumentary. The remastered film hits theaters on July 5 for a limited run until July 7, thanks to Fathom Entertainment.

The trailer hits the comedic highlights of the film, as represented by the litany of misfortunes that befall the hapless rockers on an American tour. That includes getting lost on their way to the stage, the band getting second billing to a puppet show, and, of course, the stage props for their progressive rock epic "Stonehenge" being built eighteen inches tall instead of eighteen feet, putting them at risk of being "crushed by a dwarf." It also spotlights some of the band's pitch-perfect parody discography, including "Heavy Duty" and "Big Bottom.

Diddy Garners Default Victory As Judge Tosses Out 1995 Rape Allegations From Notorious B.I.G. Party
Image
With six weeks to go until Sean “Diddy” Combs’ criminal trial for sex trafficking and more begins, the incarcerated Bad Boy Records founder now has one fewer lawsuit to deal with among the dozens he is fighting.

A federal judge today dismissed a rape case from a Jane Doe against Combs because the plaintiff did not file as required under her own name after a motion to proceed anonymously was denied earlier this month. Judge Lewis J. Liman — yes, the same judge who is overseeing the Blake Lively vs. Justin Baldoni case — gave Jane Doe until March 20 to make that filing or the matter of an alleged 1995 rape by Combs at a party for Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G. would be closed.

On March 6, Judge Liman wrote “the very gravity of the charges, combined with the fact that Plaintiff has presented no evidence of specific and concrete...

Denis Leary’s Red Sox Fandom Led to Problems on the Set of ‘The Sandlot’
Image
The ‘90s family movie classic The Sandlot starred a bunch of kid actors, James Earl Jones, and, of course, two dudes in a massive dog costume. Also in the cast was comedian Denis Leary, who played Smalls’ stepdad Bill. In a surprise twist, he turned out to not be an asshole.

The Sandlot, which came out in 1993, was Leary’s first real movie role. Later that same year, he would show up in Demolition Man as the guerrilla rebel soldier whose complaints about fascist dystopias wouldn’t seem out of place in an ‘80s comedy club.

But despite the fact that he clearly wasn’t a seasoned actor at that point in his career, Leary still had some big demands while shooting The Sandlot. At one point in the film, Bill offers to play catch with Smalls, inadvertently giving him a black eye in the process. In 2023, prop master Terry Haskell...

‘Black Bag’ Review: A Thrilling Spy Game of Secrets and Suspicion
Image

Is it possible to trust anyone—even your spouse—in a world of secrets, lies, and intrigue? The spy thriller Black Bag explores this very topic.

As the movie begins, National Cyber Security Centre Agent George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) meets secretly with fellow agent Meachum (Gustaf Skarsgard), who informs him that a mole has stolen a cyber-worm device called Severus, which can destabilize a nuclear facility. Meachum gives George a list of five names of agents, including his wife, Kathryn (Cate Blanchett), and tells him he needs to find the mole. “Give me two weeks,” says George. “Thousands of innocent people will die,” replies Meachum. “Okay, one week,” answers George.

George invites the four suspected colleagues—Colonel James Stokes (Regé-Jean Page), the in-house psychologist Dr. Zoe Vaughan (Naomie Harris), fellow...

'The Sandlot's Patrick Renna Says Filming Was Chaotic
Image
Few movies have the nostalgic value that The Sandlothas. The 1993 sports comedy is a feel-good adventure that hasn't lost the capacity to make you laugh and reminisce about your own childhood. Squints getting to kiss Wendy Peffercorn, the lights of the carnival tuned to Ray Charles' "America the Beautiful," and finding a very valuable baseball autographed by legends. The Sandlot is a good family film because it makes everyone in the family feel good. However, according to star Patrick Renna, it appears that things weren't so PG-13-like behind the camera.

Renna, who plays Ham (the boy who loves to do cannonballs) in the film, spoke to People magazine about The Sandlot as he promotes his debut children's book, A Little Slugger's Guide to the Unwritten Rules of Baseball and Life. Although we can imagine that gathering a group of young teens for a movie shoot, and keeping everything in order,...

Sean Combs’ Mom Sued for Fraud by Bad Boy Co-Founder Kirk Burrowes

Bad Boy co-founding partner Kirk Burrowes is suing Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mom, Janice Combs, with claims she secretly and unlawfully assumed control of his 25 percent ownership stake in the record label after her son allegedly coerced Burrowes into signing over his share under threat of physical violence.

In a new lawsuit filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, Burrowes claims he only recently learned about Janice’s alleged “fraudulent concealment” of her role in the purported 1996 effort to wrest away his ownership stake and that his allegation is not barred by...

‘Union’ Directors Release New Short Documenting December Strike At Amazon, As Their Award-Winning Feature Film Goes For Oscar Nomination
Image
Exclusive: The directors of Union are releasing what might be called a mini-sequel to their Oscar-shortlisted documentary feature. The companion short, titled Local One, can be watched below or on the Field of Vision website.

In their 10-minute short, directors Stephen Maing and Brett Story document in verité style the largest strike in the history of Amazon, the $2.3 trillion retail behemoth founded by Jeff Bezos. The labor action sprang up almost a month ago at the height of the Christmas package delivery season, with workers at Amazon facilities dotted across the country picketing for better wages, benefits, and working conditions, and a demand that Amazon negotiate with them on a contract.

It’s impossible to imagine the strike happening without the events shown in Union, a film that made the Oscar shortlist despite having no U.S. distribution. The documentary explores how ex-Amazon...

Which Side Are You On? Oscar Contender ‘Union’ Chronicles A Yearlong Struggle At Amazon Warehouse
Image
Just as the holiday season was going into full-blown commercial overdrive last month, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters launched a nationwide strike against Amazon, primarily among its delivery drivers, that ended on Christmas Eve. Arguably, the roots of this labor dispute against the multi-trillion-dollar goliath can be traced back to 2021, when workers at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Staten Island, New York, waged a union campaign. Led by Chris Smalls, who had been fired earlier for protesting working conditions amid the Covid pandemic, the movement faced considerable headwinds – from Amazon, of course, which, through its anti-organizing efforts, had thwarted a similar effort in Alabama, but also from the national unions, including the Teamsters, who were slow to throw their support behind the nascent Amazon Workers Union (Awu).

Charles Chaplin in Modern Times (1936)
Union (2024) Documentary Review: A Stirring Portrait of Modern Labor Struggles and Resistance
Charles Chaplin in Modern Times (1936)
Almost a century has passed since Chaplin’s cult classic “Modern Times” (1936) saw the light of the day, but it seems that the laborers’ spatial position in an advanced capitalist country has scarcely improved. Stephen Maing (director of “Crime+Punishment”) and Brett Story’s (director of “The Hottest August”) 2024 documentary “Union” stand as a testament to this fact. Made over three years, the film tracks the Amazon Labor Union (Alu) movement from its nascent stage until it made New York’s Staten Island’s JFK8 warehouse the first unionized Amazon workplace.

“Union” opens with a scene where Amazon workers languidly board a bus that takes them to the warehouse, reminding us of the opening scene of “Modern Times”, where the workers, in a flurry, run toward the factories to get exploited – both physically and of course economically. The initial scene of “Union” – drenched in a poignant blue – allures us to...

Spinal Tap Reveals What They’ve Been Doing Since the First Movie
Image
No one could ever accuse legendary rockers Spinal Tap of being static. While fans reveled in the group’s heavy metal phase in the documentary This Is Spinal Tap, one of the U.K.’s loudest bands had already gone through many iterations. The boys once played skiffle as members of The Originals, a name that changed to The New Originals once they discovered another band with the same moniker, then back to The Originals when the original Originals broke up.

Then the band became the Thamesmen, scoring a hit with their song, “Gimme Some Money.”

They eventually became Spinal Tap, but not the hard-rocking version chronicled in the movie. In 1967, the group sold psychedelic love with their smash, “Listen to the Flower People.”

So it makes sense that in the years since This Is Spinal Tap was released, the band has undergone more changes. In an interview with Empire...

Union review – fighting for your rights under the Amazon corporate jackboot
Sylvia Woods
This documentary follows the formation of the Amazon Labor Union, showing how difficult it is for workers working for a company determined to efface their rights

The historic 2022 victory in getting union recognition for Amazon workers in a huge warehouse in Staten Island, New York, and the creation of the Amazon Labor Union (Alu), is the subject of this candid and valuable film. It’s another reminder that the kind of rights that the Alu secured – however reasonable and modest – are still precarious, have never been freely given and need to be fought for. The corporation in question is uniquely powerful, well aware that it operates in a world where people will cancel their Washington Post subscription but not their Amazon Prime membership.

This documentary’s hero is Christian Smalls, who deserves his own chapter in the history of the American labour movement, alongside Sylvia Woods and Cesar Chavez. Smalls...

You're Killin' Me, Smalls: The Origins Of Ham Porter's The Sandlot Quote
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In 1993, David Mickey Evans' "The Sandlot" hit theaters as the kinder, gentler "The Bad News Bears" for nostalgic Baby Boomers and baseball-loving Millennials. Combining elements of Michael Ritchie's little league classic and Richard Donner's "The Goonies," the film recalls the magical summer when 11-year-old Scott Smalls (Tom Guiry) learned to play America's pastime in order to hang out with the neighborhood kids. The adventure element centers on the boys' attempts to retrieve the Babe Ruth-autographed baseball Scott unwisely "borrowed" from his step-father for use in a game, but the film is largely an anecdotal tale of early adolescents messing around all day long sans parental supervision.

The innocent freedom of "The Sandlot" is apparently forever (/Film called it one of the 20 best sports films of all time). Millennials are now sharing the film with their children, who...

A Doc On How Amazon Workers Unionized Drew Critics’ Praise, But No Major Takers to Distribute
Image
To someone not completely enmeshed in the state of the entertainment business, the documentary Union might seem like it has the trappings of an attractive nonfiction sales title: a dramatic story arc culminating in a history-making news event, close access to key players, a charismatic central character, glowing reviews and a premiere at a prestigious film festival.

And yet the film, which documents how an unconventional grassroots group organized the first-ever U.S. union at an Amazon warehouse, is coming to select theaters on Friday without the backing of any major entertainment companies. Months after the Brett Story and Stephen Maing-directed film screened at the Sundance Film Festival and won a special jury award there, the filmmakers announced they had turned to theatrical self-distribution in the absence of any major studio or streamer deals. With the move, a press release in June noted, the team was “recognizing the difficulties...

Union Review: An Insider Look at Amazon Organizing
Image
Brett Story and Stephen Maing have teamed up to direct a new documentary called Union. Filmed over 2021 and early 2022, the film takes audiences deep into the world of organizing from within. Union follows the efforts of the Amazon Labor Union, or Alu for short. This grassroots group was determined to unionize workers at one of Amazon’s enormous warehouses in Staten Island, New York.

Story and Maing opted for a fly-on-the-wall, observational approach. We see the union campaign unfold almost in real-time through candid footage. There are no talking head interviews or contextual voiceovers to guide viewers. Instead, Union relies purely on showing what happens as the Alu attempts to form the first-ever union at an Amazon facility. This immersive style brings audiences right to the frontlines of their struggles.

Led by fired Amazon employee Chris Smalls, the Alu faced an uphill battle. Both Amazon’s anti-union tactics and internal disagreements tested the workforce.

‘Union’ Review: An On-the-Ground Look at a Unionization Effort at an Amazon Warehouse
Image
Early on in Union, directors Stephen Maing and Brett Story include footage of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s first flight into space on a rocket created by his own Blue Origin company. Juxtaposed next to shots of workers filing onto Mta buses in the morning on their way to Amazon’s JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, the implication couldn’t be clearer: Bezos’s head is too in the stars for him to care about the labor abuses running rampant at his workplaces. Even more than the specific anecdotes of such abuses featured throughout, that sly bit of editing is enough to clue us in on the pro-labor bias underlying the documentary—which is not to say that it doesn’t have anything valuable to say within that perspective.

Union chronicles the historic unionization effort at the JFK8 warehouse throughout 2021 all the way up to its successful vote in 2022. True to its observational approach,...

One Of The Happiest Kids Movies Of The '90s Completely Ignores A Dark Reality
Image
The nostalgic coming-of-age baseball movie The Sandlot features James Earl Jones in a small but crucial role as Mr. Mertle, whose character hints at a dark part of baseball history that the film completely glosses over. Mr. Mertle bonds with Tom Guiry's Scott Smalls and Mike Vitar's Benny The Jet Rodriguez over their shared love of the great American pastime, but the endlessly quotable movie The Sandlot does not delve into the details of Mr. Mertles exact past in the professional world of baseball.

Smalls friends live and breathe baseball, and they pass their passion on to Smalls over the course of the summer of 1962, loosely based on the writer/director's childhood. Mr. Mertle saves Smalls skin by giving him a priceless artifact from his days as a professional baseball player himself. In the process, Mr. Mertle shares a heartwarming story about his legendary contemporary, Babe Ruth. However,...

Spinal Tap Demand Donald Trump Not Play “Sex Farm” at His Rallies

Even fictional bands are banning the Trump campaign from using their music.

After Isaac Hayes’ estate successfully barred Trump from using “Hold On, I’m Coming,” the cinematic heavy metal act Spinal Tap have preemptively demanded that the campaign not play their song “Sex Farm.”

Harry Shearer, who portrays Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls, declared the song off-limits in a hilarious tweet: “Not a band to be outdone, Spinal Tap is demanding that the Trump campaign refrain from playing ‘Sex Farm’ at their rallies.”

“Sex Farm” is an ’80s hard rock pastiche with lyrics that parody the objectification of women that was centric to that decade’s rock/metal culture. While it’s obviously not a song any political campaign would actually play, the joke is that it’s a pretty apt depiction of Donald Trump’s history of sexual misconduct and misogyny: “Sex farm woman / I’m gonna mow...

The Sandlot Star's New Baseball Movie Is Perfect While Waiting For Upcoming Sequel
Image
A classic star actor from The Sandlot makes an appearance in the inspirational new baseball movie You Gotta Believe. You Gotta Believe is based on the inspirational true story of a 2002 Little League baseball team from Fort Worth, Texas. The film was released on August 30, 2024 and also stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear. Wilson's Bobby Ratliff and Kinnear's Jon Kelly were two of the key figures in the unlikely underdog story that turned a group of baseball-loving kids from Texas into one of the most memorable teams in Little League World Series history.

The Sandlot is still considered one of the greatest and most iconic baseball movies ever made, particularly due to its focus on youth baseball in a "pickup" and "backyard" format. The Sandlot grossed $34 million against its $7 million budget upon its theatrical release in 1993. The Sandlot takes place in the summer of 1962 and becomes as much of a...

First Trailer for Union Explores a Historic Battle Against Amazon
Image
Premiering earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival, Union is the latest film from Brett Story and Stephen Maing (Crime + Punishment), following the Amazon Labor Union’s historic fight for workplace rights. Now reappearing on the fall festival circuit, where it’ll play at the New York Film Festival ahead of an October 18 release, the first trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: “On April 1, 2022 a group of ordinary workers made history when they did what everyone thought was impossible: they successfully won their election to become the very first unionized Amazon workplace in America. This feat would be extraordinary for any union, let alone the Amazon Labor Union (Alu), who did it with no prior organizing experience, no institutional backing, and a total budget of $120,000 raised on GoFundMe. Heralded as the most important win for labor since the 1930s, this highly immersive and cinematic documentary captures the Alu’s...

You're Killin Me Smalls: How The Sandlot Line Became So Popular
Image
"You're killing me, Smalls" is the most famous line from The Sandlot. Ham, played by Patrick Renna, says this improvised line twice in The Sandlot, and Renna improvised the line for the film. "You're killing me, Smalls" has entered the pop culture lexicon, enduring for decades, showing how the film remains beloved for generations of fans.

The Sandlot is an example of a line from a movie so great when people quote it without even knowing where it came from. "You're killing me, Smalls" is a great example. It's a common phrase for people to say in frustration, and everyone knows what it means. Yet, its origins from the classic coming-of-age movie may not be quite as well known as the phrase itself.

Released in 1993, The Sandlot follows the quiet and sheltered Scotty Smalls as he tries to make friends after moving to a town where baseball is all the rage.

The Wiz Review: Despite Stunning Performances, New Revival Eases Aimlessly Down the Road
Image
Before Dorothy’s mother passed away, she had a favorite saying, as Aunt Em reminds her grieving niece in the opening scene of The Wiz: “The hard stuff is there to let you know just how good you got it.” And while that’s a curious mantra to undergird a production of a Broadway musical, there’s something to it in the latest revival.

The first musical by a Black composer to win Tony Awards for best musical and best score, this well-loved show turns 50 next year. If Schele Williams’s simplistic and sometimes bewildering staging doesn’t itself demonstrate how the show has held up across those decades, she wisely steers all attention toward the main event: the stunning vocal performances from her cast. And since the show’s underwhelming visuals feel like less of a distraction than an afterthought, it’s easy enough to put the “hard...

“I see this film as a threat to international security”: Hilarity Ensues as 1 Horrifying ‘Madame Web’ Review Goes Viral For All the Right Reasons
Image
Though the trailer of Madame Web promised a terrible film, fans seemed to have underestimated it as the film became one of the worst-rated Sony comic book films. The Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson starrer had been a subject of memes ever since the trailer came out but the film seemed to have gained more hate than Jared Leto’s Morbius.

While Madame Web secured a terrible 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received more hilarious reviews trashing it on TikTok. One review on the social media platform roasted the film to bits and has gone viral due to its hilarious bashing of Madame Web. The reviewer, Ashley K Smalls was so ruthless in her review that she refused to give a rating, saying that giving it a zero would be ‘too high’.

‘Union’ Review: Amazon Is the Enemy In a Stirring Workers’-Rights Doc, But the Hero Isn’t So Steadfast
Image
Chris Smalls has all the makings of a hero. Young, charismatic and sympathetically rebellious, he quits his job at a New York Amazon warehouse over inadequate PPE provision, but doesn’t walk away: Instead, he launches an effort to establish a labor union at his former workplace, eager to improve conditions for those staying the course. It would be easy to build a halo-lit documentary portrait around this handsome, rabble-rousing father of three, but Brett Story and Stephen Maing’s excellent “Union” is something more finely shaded and community-minded than that. As a long-view anatomy of a unionization campaign, the film may be galvanized by Smalls’ presence at its center, but it’s rather less idealistic about the human politics involved in fighting corporations. Strong personalities inspire but they also divide; keeping everyone on side against a faceless foe is harder than Hollywood makes it look.

“Union” is no Hollywood film,...

Union (2024)
Amazon’s Anti-Labor Tactics Spotlighted in Sundance Doc ‘Union’ | Video
Union (2024)
The new Sundance documentary “Union” puts a spotlight on the extreme anti-union tactics employed by Amazon as it tries to quash a historic labor organizing effort at its Staten Island warehouse.

Directed by Brett Story and Stephen Maing, the film chronicles the struggle of the grassroots Amazon Labor Union (Alu) as it attempts to unionize the JFK8 Amazon facility. Alu president Chris Smalls joined the directors to talk to TheWrap executive editor Adam Chitwood, where they discussed Amazon’s aggressive efforts to undermine the union drive.

“It shows how Amazon and the NYPD work together,” Smalls said at TheWrap’s Sundance Portrait and Interview Studio presented by Nfp, referring to his on-camera arrest captured in the film. “It shows how policing is used to create fear and doubt, and not just to unionize. When you’re going up against corporations, someone being arrested that’s leading a movement will create...

‘Union’ Review: Documentary All-Stars Stephen Maing and Brett Story Team Up for a You-Are-There Look at the Fight to Unionize an Amazon Warehouse
Image
Stephen Maing and Brett Story’s tough and gripping new film about the fight to unionize the workers of an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island might be an observational documentary at heart, but this in-the-trenches portrait of grassroots organizing doesn’t leave any doubt as to whose side it’s on. Indeed, few movies have ever screamed “fuck you, pay me!” louder than “Union” does with its opening frames, which use footage of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos blasting into space aboard his self-financed — and unmistakably phallic — rocketship to set the stage for the struggle he’s avoiding back on Earth. Watching a mega-billionaire overcompensate on an interstellar scale would be damning regardless, but in this context it makes it that much easier to appreciate how cruelly his business empire is undercompensating all of the people who keep it in the black.

Of course, the film’s sympathies go without saying; if you want pro-Amazon propaganda,...

‘Union’ Review: A Smart, Compellingly Complicated Documentary About the Amazon Union Struggle
Image
There’s a simple David vs. Goliath story at the heart of Chris Smalls’ multi-year fight to unionize Amazon workers in Staten Island during the Covid pandemic. It’s a satisfying tale of one man taking on the wealthiest company in the world, and in broad strokes it’s an accurate story — hence the way it has generally been reported in news coverage and deep dives in places like Last Week Tonight.

I’m tremendously relieved that that’s not the version Stephen Maing and Brett Story present in their new documentary, Union.

Without devaluing the heroism of Smalls’ crusade or underselling the general inhumanity of Amazon’s treatment of its lowest-level workers, Union sets out to be something closer to a warts-and-all process documentary. Using unobtrusive direct cinema techniques, the documentary takes us inside the fledgling union, capturing the frustration and elation of trying to do the right thing in an impossible historical moment.

Stephen Maing
Sundance Review: Union is a Quintessential Addition to Workers’ Cinema Canon
Stephen Maing
Amazon Labor Union (Alu) president Chris Smalls is not the star of the documentary Union. He is just one part of the congregation in Brett Story and Stephen Maing’s co-directed film. An early glimpse of Smalls finds him discreetly flipping burgers and hot dogs at a grill. It took an employee to ask Smalls if he’s the “low-key famous” Smalls for the leader to list his media recognitions. He doesn’t want clout for his union organizing, but rather to be known for making laborers heard, enabling a better society for his children and comrades, and proving to white executives that he can manage a flock in his distinguished streetwear outfits.

The examination of the Alu at Amazon’s Staten Island headquarters, JFK8, is a dream subject of interest for Story and Maing, whose past work has concerned reform. Union traces the intimate, intense vérité approach of being...

Amazon Labor Doc Tells David and Goliath Battle of Our Time
Image
In March of 2020, Amazon fired Chris Smalls, an employee who led a walkout at its Staten Island, New York, warehouse known as JFK8 over pandemic working conditions. A memo that later was leaked to Vice News revealed that an Amazon executive dismissed Smalls as “not smart or articulate” in a strategy meeting with Jeff Bezos. But just as the tech giant was writing Smalls off, some documentary filmmakers saw in the labor organizer a compelling character at the center of a timely story about the modern workforce.

Nearly four years later, their movie, Union, which will premiere Jan. 21 at Sundance as an acquisitions title, depicts the formation of the Smalls-led Amazon Labor Union (Alu). “I thought, well, here’s an opportunity to film something from the ground up,” says Brett Story, who directs Union together with Stephen Maing. “From the very beginning, we said to this group of people, ‘We...

‘Volume’ Ending Explained & Netflix Series Recap: Will Castro Make A Deal With Andrea?
Image
There have been lots of movies about the ill effects of fame, especially if you get famous at a relatively young age. One can start to think about it as being successful, and when you add a little violence to the journey, it can be a pretty explosive experience, which ultimately fuels the misery in one’s life. The new Netflix show Volume brings exactly these flavors to it and, with some interesting music choices, tries to explore the lives of two young men, Benjamin and Castro, who embark on a journey to transform their lives but do not have an easy way ahead. Benjamin, aka Benja, the son of a musician and singer, wants to become a rapper, and when his social media page blows up, he becomes the focus of a talent manager’s hunt, but there is a problem. Benja comes ‘in a pack’ with his buddy Castro,...

How Paramount Wants to Be a “Model for the Industry” on Inclusion
Image
Antisemitism, the cultural impact of Hip Hop, “thriving in the workplace with visible and invisible disabilities,” the staying power and international success of the Drag Race franchise and how to ensure authentic Asian American representation in children’s media are just some of the topics in the spotlight during Paramount Global’s 5th annual global Inclusion Week.

Throughout this week, employees at the entertainment giant around the world have access to more than 50 panels, fireside chats and workshops “designed to expand our thinking and spark thoughtful dialogue,” according to the company.

The week’s events kicked off on Monday with a session featuring Paramount CEO Bob Bakish and Walmart CEO Doug McMillon from the retail titan’s Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters. Moderated by Marva Smalls, Paramount’s executive vp and head of the Office of Global Inclusion, their discussion addressed how diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) drives business results, innovation and company culture,...

25 Best Quotes From The Sandlot
Image
The Sandlot is a beloved movie from the 90s that has unforgettable quotes and memorable characters. The film captures a different time and place, where kids played baseball in the local lot without cell phones or social media. The movie emphasizes friendship, fun, and the love of baseball, showing that it's not always about competition or winning.

Kids of the 1990s know that The Sandlot is endlessly quotable, and the best Sandlot quotes are recognizable even when someone hasn’t seen the movie in a while. The first movie was so successful and beloved that it spawned a sequel nearly a decade after the original, and even got a time-traveling third adventure for those who love their neighborhood baseball games. There’s even been talk of a series inspired by the original movie, though it hasn’t moved beyond the development stage.

The Sandlot follows a group of boys who...
