‘Paradise’ Boss on How Their End-of-the-World Research Sets Up Season 2
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season one of Paradise.]

By now, everyone should be caught up on Paradise.

After becoming a runaway streaming hit when it launched on Hulu in early 2025, the Dan Fogelman-created post-apocalyptic drama then became a linear hit when ABC re-aired the season weekly in the spring. Now, for the trifecta, the Sterling K. Brown-starring saga just picked up four Emmy nominations this week, landing more nods in top categories than even awards experts predicted.

Safe to say, Paradise is a hit and people are watching. The Hollywood Reporter previously spoke with executive producer John Hoberg, who wrote the groundbreaking seventh episode, “The Day.” That penultimate episode of season one flashed back in time to reveal to viewers what exactly happened on the day of the extinction-level event that preceded the beginning of the series.

Paradise viewers had been imagining how the show’s world ended ever since the twisty premiere. But nothing...

‘Elemental’s John Hoberg & Kat Likkel Tapped To Script ‘Christmas Forever,’ First Animated Feature From Alloy Entertainment
Image
Exclusive: Veteran writer-producers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel (Elemental) have signed to write Alloy Entertainment’s animated feature Christmas Forever, based on Penguin/Random House children’s book of the same name by Elysa Koplovitz Dutton.

A first-time author, Koplovitz Dutton is the executive vice president of film at Alloy Entertainment. She’ll produce alongside Alloy’s president and chief creative officer, Leslie Morgenstein, in the company’s first foray into animation.

Christmas Forever takes place on Christmas Eve, watching as a group of ornaments, tired of being stuck in storage all year, devise an escape plan to the North Pole where it will be Christmas forever.

Writing partners Hoberg and Likkel were two of the three scribes on Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, starring Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, which last year earned nearly $500 million at the worldwide box office, and collected a slew of honors including Oscar, BAFTA and...

Ava DuVernay’s ‘Origin,’ Max’s ‘Hacks,’ Showtime’s ‘Fellow Travelers’ Among Humanitas Prize 2024 Winners
Image
“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.

“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. So I commend everyone that’s trying to say something.”

10 Most Expensive Animated Movies Ever Made
Image
The most expensive animated movies of all time are all from the 2010s or later, suggesting that inflation is at least part of rising costs. However, some of the iconic animated movies that changed animation forever required a larger budget to account for the new technologies the movie's team pioneered. Still, it would appear that most animators have a ceiling when it comes to their budget, even when their movies are regularly successful.

Pixar accounts for most of the most expensive animated movies, but never spends more than $200 million. The best Pixar movies are proof enough that the studio knows what it is doing, and has reason enough to be confident in spending the extra money or sticking to a budget. However, when working with the material of two of the best Disney movies of all time, executives decided to dish out even more money to make sure the movie was made correctly.

Inside Out 2's Record-Breaking Box Office Is Great, But Pixar Can't Forget About 2023's $496 Million Hit
Image
Elemental's surprising success paved the way for Inside Out 2's record-breaking box office run despite a lackluster opening weekend. Pixar learned from Elemental's comeback to make Inside Out 2 a massive hit by focusing on a clearer core concept and strong trailers. While sequels are inevitable, Pixar still needs to prioritize original movies like Elemental to maintain its unique storytelling appeal.

Pixar must be thrilled to see Inside Out 2 dominate the box office and continuously break records, but the studio must not forget about its $496 million success from the previous year. After the Covid-19 pandemic and Disney's habits made audiences more used to seeing Pixar's animated movies at home, questions about their future at the box office became much larger. Disappointing results for Onward and Lightyear, coupled with Turning Red, Soul, and Luca going straight to Disney+, had alarm bells sounding when Elemental's opening weekend disappointed...

Every Standalone Pixar Movie, Ranked
Image
Pixar is well known for its most successful franchises, including Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. These popular films have made the studio a dominant force in children's entertainment. However, the animation studio has some exceptional standalone films that shouldn't be overlooked. Some of its most successful standalone films include Up, Ratatouille, and Coco.

These animated films are not just the best without sequels but among the most respected and beloved stories by Pixar. Even less popular standalone movies, such as Elemental and Turning Red, resonate with a dedicated audience that enjoys the imagery, narrative, and themes presented. Disney's Pixar may thrive off of the profits of its sensational franchises, but it has a dozen great standalone films.

While most Pixar films have some sort of evocative impact, some characters have more tragic stories than others.

The most tragic Pixar characters either have dark pasts or deal with some heavy issues in their present. They tend to struggle more than their counterparts, and they often have a lot to overcome in their stories. Even if they have happy endings by their film's conclusion, these tragic Pixar characters are put through the wringer before the final curtain.

Pixar's Elemental Star Addresses the Possibility of a Sequel
Image
Pixar's Elemental was one of the films that the giant production company Disney released in 2023, and lead actress Leah Lewis addressed the possibility of a sequel.

Speaking to The Direct, the actress, who voiced Ember alongside Mamoudou Athie’s Wade, talked about the possibility of a sequel. Elemental followed a very improbable couple: Ember, a fire element, and Wade, a water element. The film premiered in 2023, and so far, there is no information about a sequel. However, Lewis admitted that she "would hope for that."

The lead actress for Disney Pixar’s Elemental shared an update on her involvement in its potential sequel, Elemental 2.

Leah Lewis voiced Ember alongside Mamoudou Athie’s Wade. While the two started on rocky footing, they eventually turned out to be a pretty sweet couple, getting a happy ending by the time the credits rolled.

As for what’s next, Elemental writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel confirmed last year to The Direct that they had a scrapped idea to introduce Ember and Wade’s child: "a steam baby."

What Are the Highest Grossing Films of 2023?
Image
2023 has come and gone, and for movies, another year is in the global box office record books. Despite some notable highs, the defining story of 2023's box office is one of stagnation and disappointment. After 2022 made it look like the theatrical market was recovering after the Covid-19 pandemic, with three movies crossing a billion dollars worldwide and a strong bottom end supported by major franchises, 2023 has failed to carry that momentum.

2023 was the year when cracks started to show in the reliable franchise model that's dominated Hollywood for the last two decades. Break-out original films, like Barbie and Oppenheimer, plugged some of the gaps, but not all of them. Yet despite the financial pessimism, critics agree that 2023 has been the best year in film since the pandemic, outside of the major franchises.

2024 Oscars: Best Original Screenplay Predictions
Image
Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)

Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 14 of the most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And seven of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 42 films have done this on the adapted side including the 2022 double dipper “Coda.”

In 2023 all five nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards were crafted by writer/directors.

‘Elemental’: Read The Screenplay For The Pixar Movie That Finds A Way To Mix Fire And Water
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.

Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.

The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.

The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

‘Elemental’ Draws 26.4 Million Views in First Five Days on Disney+
Image
The Disney and Pixar film “Elemental” had a strong start on Disney+, with the film pulling in 26.4 million views in its first five days of streaming availability.

Per Disney, that makes “Elemental” the most-watched movie premiere of the year on the service and among the top 10 movie premieres they have ever had. For context, Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime, just like Netflix recently started doing. The film became available on Disney+ on Sept. 13. Disney also says “Elemental” has become the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” was released in March 2022, as well as the most-viewed Disney+ movie premiere of all time in Latin America, just ahead of “Turning Red.”

By comparison, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debuted with 1.625 billion minutes viewed in its first five days of availability on Disney+, which translates to approximately 10.8 million views.

Elemental: Disney defends Pixar’s latest feature after misleading reports about the film’s underperformance
Image
There appear to be some misconceptions about the box office returns for Disney and Pixar‘s Elemental. The emotional animated feature is entering its seventh week in theaters, and according to Disney, it’s a significant success for the studio. The numbers don’t lie, and Elemental is burning brightly with $425.2M in worldwide receipts. Elemental might have started slowly with a $29.5M domestic debut, but it’s picked up steam in the weeks since.

If you’re asking yourself how the film could endure after a disappointing start, look no further than its 93% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and “A” grade on CinemaScore. Metrics matter to general audiences, and these sites could have boosted people’s confidence in shelling out dollars for tickets to the show. There’s something to be said for positive word of mouth too. Elemental reviewed well with most critics, including JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray,...

‘Elemental’ Review

Features the voices of: Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera | Written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, Brenda Hsueh | Directed by Peter Sohn

Directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur), Elemental is the 27th film from animation studio Pixar, whose films are so reliably emotional that they might as well come with a will-make-you-cry guarantee. True to form, Elemental sticks closely to the Pixar formula, mixing a high concept with a strong central metaphor to tell an extremely sweet love story that’s certain to make you shed a tear or two.

Many of Pixar’s films essentially ask, ‘What if such-and-such a thing had feelings and emotions?”, whether it’s toys in Toy Story or emotions themselves in Inside Out (still one of Pixar’s best). This time round, that concept applies to the elements, namely fire, water, earth and air,...

Elemental Composer Thomas Newman On Scoring An Original Pixar World
Image
In Elemental fire, water, earth, and air co-exist in Element City, although they live relatively separate lives, with elements never intermingling. However, this all changes when Wade, an emotional water element, and Ember, a quick-tempered fire element, work together to try and save her family's shop. The pair grows closer, and as they spend more time together, unexpected feelings develop that could change the makeup of Element City forever.

Elemental is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, the team behind The Good Dinosaur. It was co-written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Sohn working closely with them to create the story, pulling from his own life experiences. Elemental stars Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera, and Matt Yang King.

John Hoberg & Kat Likkel Interview: Elemental
Image
Elemental stars with the four elements of water, air, earth, and fire co-existing peacefully in Element City. However, they live relatively separate lives, with Ember, a hot-headed fire element, and her family running a store in Firetown. When Wade, an overly emotional water element and city inspector, is sucked through the pipes and notes a number of violations, Ember's family legacy is in danger. She and Wade work together to try and save her family's store and slowly grow closer, with feelings developing. Although it breaks a cardinal rule about elements mixing, Wade and Ember's feelings could change Element City forever as opposites attract and create something entirely new.

Director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream, the team behind The Good Dinosaur, joined forces once again to bring Pixar's newest movie, Elemental, to the big screen. Elemental was co-written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Sohn...

They’re also seeing how emotionally charged and, at times, sad their love story can be.

Screenwriters John Hoberg and Kat Likkel came onto the story in 2019, after three previous versions of the script had already been workshopped. Speaking with TheWrap, the pair laughed about how their version was the first to introduce the concept of Wade dying to save Ember.

“Our first version was the fourth version, and he didn’t die in the previous three, so I guess that was our first contribution: killing Wade,” Hoberg said.

Throughout the movie, the audience sees Ember and Wade...

Leah Lewis at Cannes Festival Photocall 2023 for Pixar's Elemental
‘Elemental’ Is an Immigrant Tale, but It Also Cuts Deep as a Story About Disability (Commentary)
Leah Lewis at Cannes Festival Photocall 2023 for Pixar's Elemental
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated feature, “Elemental,” is a charming drama about family and identity, centering the story of two elements, Ember and Wade, who fall in love with each other. Many different themes are tackled within, from questions of personal identity to the struggles of immigration. But at a certain point Ember talks about how, as a fire element who can cause things to ignite just by standing next to them, the “world is not designed for me.”

My ears immediately perked up when I heard that line. As a disabled person, I say this regularly because the world is definitely not designed with me in mind, or most disabled people for that matter. Director Peter Sohn and co-screenwriters John Hoberg and Kat Likkel didn’t intend to tell a disabled story, but the story they told is one that does resonate with marginalized people. “The idea of...

Peter Sohn & Desine Ream Interview Elemental
Image
Elemental examines the age-old question of whether opposites attract. In Element City, air, water, earth, and fire coexist peacefully for the most part, although the elements tend not to mix. Wade, an overly emotional water element, and Ember, a quick-to-anger fire element, become an unlikely duo as they work together to save her family's shop. They slowly learn more about one another, grow closer, and eventually begin to develop feelings for each other. Although this goes against the norm, Ember and Wade's unexpected feelings could change Element City forever.

The team behind The Good Dinosaur teams up once again, with Peter Sohn directing Elemental and Denise Ream serving as his producer. John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh co-wrote the script for Elemental, but Sohn helped co-create the story with them, with much of it based on his own life experiences. Elemental stars Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen,...

Leah Lewis & Mamoudou Athie Interview: Elemental

Elemental is set in Element City, where fire, water, air, and earth live together. Although the elements don't mix, Wade, a water element, and Ember, a fire element, become an unlikely pair as they work together to help her family's business. Along the way, they grow closer, slowly falling for one another. Elemental examines the age-old idea that opposites attract, with Wade and Ember potentially changing everything because of their unexpected feelings.

Elemental is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream. Elemental is written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, although the story hits close to home for Sohn, with much of it based on his own life experiences. Elemental stars Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera, and Matt Yang King.

‘Elemental’ Cast and Crew Split on Whether It’s a Romantic Comedy

The new Pixar and Disney animated feature “Elemental” has several classic film inspirations behind it, ranging all the way from the 1967 romantic drama “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” to 1974’s “Godfather 2” (you read that right).

For director Peter Sohn, no film was off-limits for a story that held deep personal connection to him. “Films that took cities and made them into characters. The beautiful Gordon Willis cinematography of ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall.’ ‘Amelie,’ how they made Paris into a postcard, but then love stories from ‘Sense and Sensibility’ to ‘Moonstruck,'” Sohn told TheWrap.

But whether the film is considered a romantic comedy is a point of contention between the cast and the writers. “Whenever people call this a rom-com — not to disagree, there are obviously romantic elements — but, for me, this movie has been always primarily about family,” said Mamoudou Athie, who plays Wade in the film.

Podtalk: Wendi McLendon-Covey, Voice of Gale in ‘Elemental’
Image
Chicago – What does an actor do after a successful run of a TV series? If you are Wendi McLendon-Covey, late of “The Goldbergs,” it’s an animation voiceover gig for Pixar Animation and Walt Disney Studios latest release, “Elemental.” McLendon-Covey is the voice of Gale Cumulus, a city official in a wondrous mix of elements.

In a city where fire, water, earth, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman named Ember (voice of Leah Lewis) and a go-with-the-flow watery guy named Wade (Mamoudou Athie) meet cute as the shop of Ember’s father Bernie (Ronnie del Carmen). Wade is a city inspector, scrutinizing Bernie’s establishment, and he kicks the paperwork upstairs to his boss Gale Cumulus (Wendi McLendon-Covey). Elemental Review
Image
Directed by Pixar veteran Peter Sohn with a script by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, Elemental is as gorgeous as audiences have come to expect from the animation studio. But the craft behind Pixar's films has only ever been part of the formula to their greatest successes. A deft melding of creative world-building and a compelling human story are the other keys to the best stories from the studio, even when the main characters are far from human.

While Elemental is lacking in the former, its emotional throughline is a well-executed and occasionally powerful tale of a first-generation immigrant falling in love with someone society says she shouldn't be with. Elemental is impressive, stirring, and absolutely gorgeous, but a little more character complexity and fewer gags would have made it even more special.

The beloved animation studio Pixar has revealed a new look at their upcoming rom-com drama, Elemental, courtesy of a stunning 4Dx poster. This latest look at Elemental puts main characters Ember and Wade at its center, with the pair attempting to navigate their way around Element City, a metropolis inhabited by personifications of the four main elements, fire, water, earth, and air.

4Dx is arguably the best way to see Elemental, considering it gets viewers to viscerally experience the actual elements themselves. You can check out the new Elemental 4Dx poster below and learn more about the film and the format.

Elemental is all set to be led by Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, with the duo of opposing elements growing closer as the story progresses as they slowly discover how much they actually have in common.

First Elemental Reviews Are Mixed On Pixar's Beautiful & "Overcomplicated" New Movie
Image
The first reviews for Pixar's Elemental have arrived from the Cannes International Film Festival. Directed by Peter Sohn and written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, the movie stars Mamoudou Athie and Leah Lewis as Wade Ripple and Ember Lumen, respectively. Both characters are made from completely different elements, but slowly realize throughout the movie how much they have in common while living in a world where all elements live together.

Critics who attended Elemental's first screening at Cannes have now begun to share their thoughts on Pixar's latest summer offering. While some have praised the movie as one of Pixar's best in recent memory, others were left with mixed feelings about the end result, feeling that its beautiful visuals don't make up for its surface-level exploration of its themes. Check out what critics are saying below:

‘Elemental’ Review: Pixar’s Timely High-Concept Bonanza Underwhelms
Image
Everyone has their favorite Pixar movie — mine is Coco, with Wall-e and Ratatouille very close seconds — and no matter which title you prefer in the game-changing animation studio’s catalogue, almost every one of them feels unique. (The Cars and Toy Story sequels aside, although even some of those were fresh and original).

But in the last few years, Pixar, which Disney purchased for more than $7 billion back in 2006, has failed to deliver the goods like it used to. Soul was ambitious but played too much like a jazzy riff on Inside Out. Luca was fun in the Italian sun but also too slight. Lightyear was an unnecessary spinoff of a great franchise that should have ended as a trilogy.

Which brings us to Elemental. The studio’s 27th feature, has, well, all the elements that make up a great Pixar movie: A high-concept pitch that could only be rendered...

Everything We Know About Elemental, Pixar's Love Story Between Fire And Water
Image
The wonderful folks at Pixar Animation are ready to unleash their 27th feature with the imaginative "Elemental." Drawing inspiration from director Peter Sohn's youth growing up as a second-generation immigrant in New York City, the film is a celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity, wrapped in a heartwarming romantic comedy. The story is said to be inspired by films like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "Moonstruck," and "Amélie," but is presented in a way that appeals to audiences of all ages.

"Elemental" is also one of Pixar's most ambitious films to date, with producer Denise Ream telling Total Film Magazine, "We knew it was going to be hard. We didn't know it was going to be as hard as it was." As all of the characters are different elements, they all move in entirely different ways. Considering the film showcases an entire city of different elemental folk interacting with one another,...
