The perpetual Netflix cull continues, though rather than unceremonious cancellation, the streamer will instead be removing several of its own “original” television shows. The dream of streaming first began with the idea that there would be no ads, and that these new studios could create and license their own projects free of the Hollywood system. Sadly, the dream seems to be slowly dying, with the addition of platforms removing their own TV shows being just the next step in the inevitable demise of streaming.

The first Netflix original on the chopping block is the Hungarian romantic drama On Body and Soul, which boasts a hugely impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix is the latest platform to remove some of its original titles from its streaming library. Starting Feb. 2, seven originals, mostly foreign language offerings, will leave the platform, per What’s on Netflix.

The trend of removing originals from platforms is nothing new for Netflix, which has already lost its Marvel original shows including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher, to Disney+ due to expiring licensing agreements. Disney+ removed its Willow reboot series from the platform in 2023 due to low viewership, and Paramount+ did the same with its Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

Even though HBO and Russell Simmons are back in business with a new comedy series, Simmons will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his old HBO show, “Def Comedy Jam,” at rival Netflix instead.

Netflix announced Thursday that it would premiere “Def Comedy Jam 25” this fall. Performers include Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Adele Givens, Eddie Griffin, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Kid Capri, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Craig Robinson, Jb Smoove, Sommore and Joe Torry.

“Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam” aired on HBO from 1992 to 1997 and briefly returned in 2006. The show helped turn some of the stand-ups mentioned above into stars. Simmons, Stan Lathan, Sandy Wernick and Jesse Collins are executive producers of “Def Comedy Jam 25.”

Netflix has been aggressive in the comedy space, aggressively acquiring an entire docket of stand-up specials.

In case you have been under a rock for the last couple of months, The Mo'Nique Show is Bet's late night talk show which features comedian Mo’Nique as the Host interviewing her guests.

Its seems that the news out of Mo’Nique’s camp isn’t slowing down anytime soon. As we stated in our post yesterday, Mo'Nique is preparing for her Oct. 5th launch of her Bet talk show titled The Mo’Nique Show. So far, her line up for her first week is stellar.

Queens of Comedy stars Mo'Nique and Sommore are in negotiations to join the cast of the Jessy Terrero-directed urban comedy Soul Plane, which MGM is distributing. Additionally, Godfrey Danchimah, best known for his current series of 7UP commercials, is also negotiating to come aboard the project, which goes into production late next month. Soul Plane, which the studio picked up as a pitch from writer-producer Bo Zenga and writer Chuck Wilson, is about Dakwon (Kevin Hart), a young man who parlays a $600 million lawsuit into his own urban airline. During the maiden flight, the Hunkee family, headed by Tom Arnold, is mistakenly rerouted from another airline and put on the airline's maiden flight only to find they are the only white people on board.
