Image
Exclusive: Send up the Bat Signal! Batwheels, DC’s first-ever Batman series for a preschool audience, has been renewed for a third season at Cartoon Network.

Produced by Warner Bros Animation, the series follows a group of sentient super-powered crime-fighting vehicles defending Gotham City alongside a host of DC superheroes. This Cobra Kai Star Has a Major Batman Connection
Image
Jacob Bertrand is a fan-favorite for playing Hawk in Cobra Kai -- but what fans don't know is that before the Netflix series, he had several big voice acting roles. His voice credits include Rise of the Guardians, The Legend of Korra and the Lion King spinoff series The Lion Guard. He's getting back to his roots -- and being front and center -- in the Max series Batwheels.

Batwheels, which is resuming its second season on Max, is an original show in the Batman universe focused on the adventures (and misadventures) of the Bat-Family's prized vehicles as they help protect Gotham City. Bertrand voices Bam the Batmobile, and spoke to Cbr about being part of two popular franchises between Batwheels and Cobra Kai. He also revealed if he'd ever want to portray the Dark Knight after playing the Batmobile.

Cbr: Before you joined the cast of Cobra Kai, you'd...

Image
Cartoonito, WarnerMedia Kids & Family’s new preschool programming block, launched Monday on HBO Max and Cartoon Network and used the occasion to reveal that it has set casts for a pair of animated projects — a Batwheels series that will feature Ethan Hawke as the voice of Batman and its Mo Willems one-hour rock opera Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Underground Rock Experience. It also greenlighted the first preschool animated series starring Tom and Jerry.

The news came today as part of a live virtual event celebrating the new block, which features a fall slate of 20 new series. Within two years, the company said, the slate of originals will reach 50 shows.

Image
The little ones are getting a new children's show in Batwheels, a new animated preschool series in the works at Warner Bros. Animation. Starring a sentient version of the Batmobile, the series will feature some of the most popular vehicles from the DC universe as they fight crime alongside Batman, Robin, Batgirl, and the other superheroes of Gotham City. The project will reportedly air on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max on a date yet to be determined.

Of course, the Batman animated vehicles featured on the show have also been given cute nicknames, as it just wouldn't have been a children's show otherwise. The cast's main characters include Bam (The Batmobile), Bibi (The Batgirl Cycle), Red (The Redbird), Jett (The Batwing), Buff (The Bat Truck). As a group, the "sentient super-powered vehicles must navigate the growing pains of being a newly-formed super team, as well as the growing pains...

Tom Ascheim
Warner Bros. Animation has started production on a new pre-school series called “Batwheels,” and it features baby versions of super-vehicles like the Batmobile and the Batgirl Cycle fighting crime alongside Batman, Robin, Batgirl and other DC Universe characters.

Set to stream on HBO Max and air on Cartoon Network and its global platforms, the series follows the Batwheels — a group of “sentient, super-powered crime-fighting vehicles” defending Gotham from DC Universe villains alongside their superhero counterparts.

“Having just been created by the Batcomputer, our heroes are essentially kids with little to no life experience. Led by Bam (The Batmobile), the Batwheels – Bibi (The Batgirl Cycle), Red (The Redbird), Jett (The Batwing) and Buff (The Bat Truck) – must navigate the growing pains of being a newly formed super team as well as the growing pains that come with just being a kid,” reads the description from Warner Bros. Penguins Of Madagascar Digital HD Review
Penguins of Madagascar moves toward an interesting take on the sequel genre, if there is such a thing, by creating a spin-off film, from characters that have already had a spin-off show. Such is the appeal of the Madagascar films (though the straight sequels have had varying levels of success), that both the penguins and King Julien have managed animated series, and there’s something to be said for the idea that if people love the penguin characters we should run with that.

The film bases its plot on the dueling ideas that Private is fed up with having no role in the crew, and that the penguins in general, and then to another level of “in general,” have taken the spotlight off of a certain octopus.

Following the events of the last Madagascar film, our penguin heroes – Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (Conrad Vernon), and Private (Christopher Knights...

Penguins Of Madagascar Available On Digital HD Today – Blu-Ray March 17th
Penguins of Madagascar was unlucky when it came to looking back over the year, because it was overshadowed by other animated efforts in a year that was just lousy with surprisingly strong animated releases. But, it’s not a movie you should let slip past, and is one that will certainly be a rewatch staple for younger audiences for a long time.

We’ll have a full review of the Digital release very soon, but wanted to make sure you got the news that the movie is available now on iTunes and other Digital HD retailers.

We also want to make sure you have all the info for the Blu-Ray release, including the toy pack that will be available. The iTunes release comes with the bonus features of the Blu-Ray release.

Penguins Of Madagascar Review
Throughout the first Madagascar film, four cuddly penguins remained on the sidelines, waddling onscreen whenever comic relief was needed. In 2008, the penguins were given their own television show but limited profits caused it to be cancelled in 2012, after only three seasons. Now, directors Eric Darnell (Madagascar) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) have decided to give the beloved penguins another go in their own film, entitled Penguins of Madagascar.

We open up with a prologue detailing how the four penguins came together. As soon as the voice-over narration by Werner Herzog is heard, audience should know what they’re in for, and that’s material that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. As Herzog’s documentary crew observes, Kowalski (Chris Miller) and Rico (Conrad Vernon) are trailing their leader Skipper (Tom McGrath) along a line of other penguins. As the trio is marching, an egg rolls by.

Film Review: ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ is Definitely No Turkey
Chicago – The only thing rarer than a spinoff that soars over its inspiration is a DreamWorks Animation production without “Dragon” in the title, and one that’s actually worth watching. Improbably, “Penguins Of Madagascar” is both.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

To be honest, I’ve felt the “Madagascar” series to be typical of DreamWorks decidedly second-tier status in the field of animation. They lacked the imagination of Pixar’s best efforts, and settled for the usual collection of celebrity voices and overly hyperactive animation, topped off with a generic frenetic dance sequence that fades from memory before the beat even stops. While “Penguins” doesn’t exactly set itself apart per se, it does freshen up the formula and shows why it became popular in the first place.

This film sends the quartet of Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico into their own secret agent spy adventure beginning with an inventive heist at Fort Knox.

‘Penguins of Madagascar’ Review: Turns Out These Birds Can Fly On Their Own
Whether in TV or movies, spin-offs are risky, never more so than when the figures being spun off are wacky supporting characters who must now carry the story themselves. What made viewers happy in small doses may overwhelm them when it’s administered in jumbo servings. You may think you want a bowl of Lucky Charms with nothing but marshmallows, but really, you don’t. But the quartet of conniving penguins who have consistently been the funniest part of the Madagascar films (and who already have their own Nickelodeon TV series) have now successfully launched their own movie with Penguins of Madagascar, a zippy action comedy that’s closer in spirit to Looney Tunes than the usual DreamWorks offering. Directed by franchise veteran Eric Darnell and DreamWorks stalwart Simon J. Smith, and written by a trio of men whose experience is mostly in live-action, the film is stuffed with jokes for kids and their parents (including a...

‘Horrible Bosses 2′ Cashes Tuesday Paycheck: Turkey B.O. Update
Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Tom McGrath, Christopher Knights, and Chris Miller in Madagascar (2005)
Update, Wednesday 8 Am: Warner Bros./New Line’s R-rated sequel Horrible Bosses 2 nabbed an early bonus last night with $1 million at Tuesday night previews. The comedy about a trio of wacky business guys who kidnap their investor’s son will be playing at 3,321 locations today and expand to 3,375 on Friday. That figure outstrips the $365K chunk of cash Horrible Bosses stole from late night previews in July 2011.

Previous, Tuesday 1:18 Pm: Penguins will try to carve into a Katniss’ Thanksgiving feast this weekend at the box office but, despite a lower-than-expected debut from the penultimate Hunger Games entry last week, look for the Suzanne Collins adaptation to retain the holiday crown over Madagascar‘s latest entry.

Mockingjay, like Catching Fire last year, has the benefit of Thanksgiving traffic. However, Catching Fire was coming off a franchise record bow and spurred an all-time record for any film, opener or second-framer,...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom McGrath Talk The Penguins Of Madagascar, Favorite Animated Movies, and More
Opening tomorrow is Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith's The Penguins of Madagascar.  DreamWorks Animation's upcoming spinoff features the espionage-minded birds as they go off on a mission to bring down the nefarious octopus Dave (John Malkovich) even though they end up getting in the way of the professional spy organization the North Wind, which is led by the wolf "Classified" (Benedict Cumberbatch).  The movie also features the voices of Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, and Peter Stormare.  For more on the film, check out the trailer. To help promote the film, I recently got to talk with Benedict Cumberbatch (he plays Agent Classified) and Tom McGrath (he voices Skipper).  They talked about the relationship between Agent Classified and the Penguins, script changes during production, how recording their dialogue separately can be an advantage, and their favorite animated movies.  Hit the jump for what they had to say. Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Tom McGrath, Christopher Knights, and Chris Miller in Madagascar (2005)
Review: 'Penguins of Madagascar' lands some laughs but still feels cynical
Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Tom McGrath, Christopher Knights, and Chris Miller in Madagascar (2005)
First, let's state the obvious and get it out of the way. This is a crass piece of corporate product, an animation studio working more as an IP farm than as a storytelling unit, and it exists so that Dreamworks Animation can continue to wring money out of the "Madagascar" franchise. It is a perfect example of marketing driving the machine. It's also a profoundly silly movie that really isn't even trying to play by the conventional rules of family animation. They nod to creating a sentimental arc between Private (Christopher Knights) and Skipper (Tom McGrath), but they don't dwell on it, and they handle it with a fairly deft touch. The main goal of the movie is just to be ridiculous, and it does that in spades. The film starts with the penguins in their natural habitat, being filmed by a documentary film crew complete with the actual Werner Herzog narrating.

‘Penguins Of Madagascar’ Review: Pete Hammond On Earthbound Spinoff
Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Tom McGrath, Christopher Knights, and Chris Miller in Madagascar (2005)
Penguins of Madagascar waddles onto screens this holiday week, a spinoff of DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar animated franchise. But as I say in my video review above, this film focuses on just one corner of that franchise’s winning collection of critters, the scheming pack of penguins. And it never quite takes flight, despite its manic pace and an evil octopus (!) voiced wonderfully by John Malkovich.

Other voice cast members include the seemingly omnipresent Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom McGrath (director of the three Madagascar films), Chris Miller (Puss in Boots director), Christopher Knights and Conrad Vernon (director of Shrek 2 and Monsters vs. Aliens).

The film was directed by Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith, from a script fashioned by McGrath, Brandon Sawyer, Eric Darnell, John Aboud and Michael Colton. Producers are Laura Breay and Mark Swift.

Penguins opens in the United States on Wednesday (it’s been in China and...

‘Interstellar’ At $226M Overseas As China, Korea Show Endurance: Intl’ Box Office Final
Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar (2014)
Update, Tuesday, 4:02 Am Pt: A couple of things have happened in the world of international box office since late Sunday night. We now know that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I will not be bowing in China in the 2014 calendar year, and we have a little more insight into why Korea is like the proverbial black hole for Interstellar (in the good sense). Exerting an incredible gravitational pull, Korea has advanced itself as a massive $35.9M play (so far) for Christopher Nolan’s intergalactic epic. Here’s why: There is a very strong and vocal Nolan fanbase in Korea, which has generated astronomical word of mouth in the market. I’m told there were a few midnight screenings the night before the opening on November 6, and online buzz began building immediately. The not-so-spacey elements have also played very well, with the emotional and family sub-plots broadening appeal. Worth recalling...

Watch: One More Trailer for 'Penguins of Madagascar' Rejects Nature
"Tiny and helpless, the baby penguins are frozen with fear." Who would have ever thought that Werner Herzog would lend his voice to DreamWorks Animation film? It sounds like an impossible task, and yet here we are with the filmmaker seemingly parodying himself as a documentary director shooting footage of the Penguins of Madagascar as young ones. But then we're brought up to speed with the Arctic birds as top notch spies, and that's when a new adventure begins. There's some childish silliness, but there's also some clever writing here, and that's from someone who has never really enjoyed these characters. Watch! Here's the new trailer for Penguins of Madagascar from DreamWorks Animation: Don't forget about the teaser trailer and previous theatrical trailer for Penguins of Madagascar too. The Penguins of Madagascar is directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar franchise) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) and written by John Aboud...

Directors Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith Talk Penguins Of Madagascar, Making the Penguins Main Characters, Their Scene Stealing Cricket and More
Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo are all great characters, but Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (John Dimaggio) and Private (James Patrick Stuart) definitely stole some of their thunder in the Madagascar films. In fact, the penguins are so popular, they’ve got their very own Nickelodeon TV show and, come November 26th, they’ll have their own feature film as well. Penguins of Madagascar pits our heroes against someone from their past, Dave the octopus. With the help of the undercover inter-species task force, The North Wind, the penguins must thwart Dave’s plan to take over the world. Immediately after the film’s New York Comic-Con panel, I got the chance to sit down with directors Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith to discuss making the decision to give the penguins their own movie, how the animated filmmaking process...

Penguins Of Madagascar Comic-Con Panel Recap: A Great DreamWorks Animated Film Might Be on the Way
Following the panel for Home, DreamWorks Animation moved to Penguins of Madagascar. In the upcoming spinoff, the scene-stealing penguins take the lead, and are joined by a wolf named Classified (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and his covert team of protective animals as they try to stop Dave (John Malkovich), a malevolent octopus. Even though I’ve never been much for the Madagascar movies, the Penguins have always been wonderful, and I was interested to see if they could carry their own movie. Judging by what they showed us today, they could have one of the funniest films of the year. Hit the jump for my Penguins of Madagascar Comic-Con panel recap. They started off with the teaser trailer, which you can watch below: Panel Highlights: Moderator Craig Ferguson brought on Directors Simon J. Smith, and Eric Darnell, and the voice of Skipper, Tom McGrath. Smith says they’re about 70% finished with the movie.

You'll Never Believe Who Shows Up In The Penguins Of Madagascar
DreamWorks Animation brought just enough footage of Penguins of Madagascar to San Diego Comic-Con to convince me that it.s destined to be one of the funniest films yet to open this year. Confidently screening more than 20 minutes of polished footage, Thursday.s Hall H panel played up all of the quirky, hysterical traits we appreciate in the tight-knit team of adventurous penguins. The footage was a huge hit. though the biggest laughs came from an unexpected cameo. If you don.t want to know this surprising character who appears in Penguins of Madagascar, stop reading now! We know that Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich are part of the ensemble. As part of the Hall H presentation, though, Penguins of Madagascar co-directors Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith screened the first six minutes of the movie, which are a flashback to the first day the baby penguins of Skipper (Tom...

San Diego Comic-Con’s infamous Hall H will play host to the BBC’s star detective, Cumberbatch, but, unfortunately, the actor will not be attending as part of a Sherlock event. Instead, Cumberbatch will appear on Comic-Con 2014’s inaugural Hall H panel: Dreamworks Animation.

'The Penguins of Madagascar' trailer: Spies and Benedict Cumberbatch -- Video
Jeff Bennett, John DiMaggio, Tom McGrath, and James Patrick Stuart in The Penguins of Madagascar (2008)
Penguins are the closest things the animal kingdom has to James Bond; they’re already in tuxedos.

And in the trailer for The Penguins of Madagascar, the penguins — who have appeared in the previous Madagascar movies – get help from the most debonair of the humans: Benedict Cumberbatch, providing the voice of a superspy wolf Agent Classified. Though given the penguins’ penchant for messing around (and eating cheesy puffs at the wrong time), it doesn’t seem like the alliance will be the most easy-going.

The Penguins of Madagascar has the penguins facing off against a new foe, Dr. Octavius Brine...

First Trailer for DreamWorks’ The Penguins of Madagascar
The PWe’ve seen them in the trilogy of Madagascar films, we’ve seen them on their own TV show, and now the Penguins of Madagascar are about to have their big screen debut.

Previously due to be released next spring, DreamWorks recently announced that The Penguins of Madagascar and Home would be switching release dates, putting Skipper and co. in cinemas a full four months earlier.

There’s just over five months left on the clock now before the film’s arrival, and the studio has debuted a great first trailer online.

Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John Dimaggio, and Christopher Knights all reprise their roles as the leading quartet from the original Madagascar films, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private.

And joining them for the ride this time will be Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, and Peter Stormare.

Check Out The First Trailer For Penguins Of Madagascar
DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar has somehow spawned two sequels, a short film, two holiday specials and a spinoff Nickelodeon series called The Penguins of Madagascar since 2005. That Nickelodeon series, centered on the escapades of the four paramilitary-like penguins who became fan favorites after appearing in Madagascar, is now making the trip to the big screen in a movie called Penguins of Madagascar.

The first trailer for the animated caper, due out in November, has hit the web, and you can check it out right here:

The film apparently doesn’t have much to do with the animated series, which was set largely in the Central Park Zoo. In this feature-length outing, the Penguins (voiced by Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John Dimaggio and Christopher Knights) encounter an elite interspecies task force called the North Wind which is dedicated to helping animals in peril. The North Wind, led by a wolf named...

The Penguins Of Madagascar Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch Is a Wolf in Animated Spinoff
DreamWorks Animation has released the first The Penguins of Madagascar trailer for the upcoming spinoff of the animated Madagascar franchise. Directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie), the film finds the scene-stealing penguins leading a film of their own as they’re joined by a wolf named Classified (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), who leads a covert team of protective animals. Though the pic may seem like an easy way to extend the lucrative series, this trailer is actually quite funny. The pic appears to be a throwback to the action films of the 80s and 90s, and the titular penguins are a great source of physical comedy.
