Captain America: Brave New World Is Now Streaming On Disney Plus - Did The Movie Deserve Its Tepid Reception?
Image
Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World is now streaming on Disney+, giving those who decided to skip the movie in theaters - or who might want to give it another shot - the chance to watch Sam Wilson's first big-screen outing as the Sentinel of Liberty from the comfort of their couch.

Deadpool and Wolverine proved to be a much-needed box office jolt for Marvel/Disney, and also went over pretty well with fans and critics. Unfortunately, Brave New World wasn't quite able to keep the momentum going.

To be fair, the movie did end up passing $400 million worldwide (which didn't always seem likely), but with a budget that reportedly ballooned to over $200 million after extensive reshoots (not counting marketing costs), this must still be considered as a disappointing result. The critical reception was also mixed-negative, and the fourth Captain America movie is currently sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 342 reviews.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson | Written by Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Julius Onah, Peter Glanz | Directed by Julius Onah

Anthony Mackie steps into the title role for the fourth movie in the MCU’s Captain America series, following the events of TV’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, somewhat unexpectedly, the film also turns out to be a direct sequel to The Incredible Hulk, albeit one without Bruce Banner in it. The result, unfortunately, is something of a mixed bag.

Captain America: Brave New World opens with Sam Wilson (Mackie), the new Captain America, on a mission for the US government, led by newly elected President (and former Hulk hunter) Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). When he finds himself slap bang in the middle of an international incident in which his friend Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) was apparently brainwashed,...

‘The King of Kings’ Just Surpassed Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Parasite’ to Become Biggest Korean Movie in America
Image
The King of Kings has been playing in theaters for just over three weeks. After falling a stunning 9% during its second weekend, the animated biblical epic dropped a whopping 76% during its third weekend. Still, the Oscar Isaac-led film has collected $54.7 million at the domestic box office and $4.4 million internationally for a worldwide total of $59.1 million. This domestic total is enough to push The King of Kings past Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite to become the highest-grossing Korean film ever in the U.S. The King of Kings was written and directed by Seong-ho Jang, with Rob Edwards and Jamie Thomason also contributing to the script along with Hoseok Sung. It is also the second-highest-grossing movie ever for its distributor, Angel Studios.

The King of Kings kicked off its box office run with a strong $19.3 million debut, which was enough to earn it the #2 spot at the box office over...

Interview: Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Keith David and More Talk Sneaks
Rob Edwards
In the latest animated tale from the directing team of Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins, a familiar yet fun world is revealed. The all-star Sneaks features the vocal talents of Anthony Mackie, Laurence Fishburne, Keith David, Macy Gray, Martin Lawrence, Rico Rodriguez, and many more. It tells the story of two designer sneakers that get separated after a creepy collector (Fishburne) steals them from a young man who won them. It’s a sweet and humorous look at friendship, separation, and sneakers.

We recently spoke to several of the cast members, and it was quite the treat. First up, I spoke with Anthony Mackie, and he really is one of the nicest guys around. He opened up about his first pair of sneakers. As well as taking a break from superheroes for this animated adventure. After that, I spoke with Rico Rodriquez, who took a liking to my Funko Pops collection.

‘Sinners’ achieved something no other horror film has done while toppling ‘Minecraft’ and winning box office
Image
Update April 20, 2025: There’s a new box-office champion for the April 18-20 weekend. Ryan Coogler's Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, dominated the competition with a $45.6 million debut, securing the top spot. The vampire film not only exceeded projections but achieved something no other horror film has done before. As noted by Deadline, Sinners received an A grade from CinemaScore, the first time in the tracking firm's nearly 50-year history that a horror film has earned that rating from exit audiences. Lauded film and genre classics like A Quiet Place, The Lost Boys, and The Conjuring all managed A-minus scores. Not even the Oscar-winning Get Out could get higher than that. But Sinners, one of the best-reviewed films of the year and already drawing Oscar buzz, managed to make the grade, notching a new milestone.

Meanwhile, A Minecraft Movie — widely expected to win its third consecutive weekend — settled for second place with $41.3 million.

Sneaks Review: Laced-Up with Energy, Loosened by Logic
Image
Sneaks, directed by Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins, opens with the sonic sprawl of New York City—subway rattles, street corner chatter, the ambient pulse of a city that rarely sleeps. Within this stylized urban sprawl, the film introduces a world where sneakers possess consciousness, emotion, and a fractured sense of purpose.

The conceit is knowingly absurd, and yet the movie treats it with earnest visual commitment, inviting its audience to follow a pair of gold-and-white Alchemy 24s, separated by theft and circumstance, across a city drawn with exaggerated lines and kinetic motion.

The central figures—Ty (Anthony Mackie), a self-serious sneaker convinced his destiny lies in permanent display; Maxine (Chloe Bailey), the spirited counterpart who insists on being used—carry the thematic weight of the film. Their voices are not merely animated; they echo the tension between preservation and purpose, between being admired and being worn. Supporting them are the slick-talking J.

‘Sneaks’ Review: Anthony Mackie and Martin Lawrence Are Shoes – Yes, Really
Image
The animated anthropomorphic shoe movie “Sneaks” reminds me a lot of Werner Herzog, and not just because one time he ate a freakin’ shoe.

The director of “Fitzcarraldo” and “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” also claimed that humanity was “starving for new images,” a challenge many filmmakers have taken to heart. I cannot say with absolute certainty that Herzog will think highly of a film in which a phalanx of living footwear marches through Central Park in the middle of the night as giant murder rats dart at them from the shadows, slaughtering each shoe one by one. But I’m pretty sure he’d have to concede that yes, this really is a new image. Well played, “Sneaks.”

“Sneaks” is the latest in a long line of films that wonder whether the little things we take for granted in life have feelings. “The Brave Little Toaster” argued that we...

‘Sneaks’ Review: Anthony Mackie, Chloe Bailey and Martin Lawrence in an Animated Comedy That Takes the High Out of Hi-Tops
Image
The strangest thing about Sneaks, a new animated movie co-directed by Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins and written by Edwards (Captain America: Brave New World, The Princess and the Frog), isn’t that shoes become sentient beings, but that a stacked cast is squandered on such a plodding and predictable story.

Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Swae Lee, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Bailey and Macy Gray, among many others, lend their voices to the footwear and people that populate this fictionalized New York City. And while their performances are solid, they lack the energy one might reasonably expect from such a talented ensemble.

The issues largely stem from a narrative reliant on, instead of merely riddled with, clichés. A story of a kid trying to achieve his dreams or a reunion between a shoe and his other half need not be deep, but it should feel inspired, whether through the animation or...

Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Oscar Isaac, and Roman Griffin Davis in The King of Kings (2025)
‘The King of Kings’ Opens with $19.3M, Sets Record for Faith-Based Animation
Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Oscar Isaac, and Roman Griffin Davis in The King of Kings (2025)
Three films centered on the life of Jesus Christ appeared in the domestic top ten over the weekend, led by the animated feature The King of Kings, which debuted with an estimated $19.3 million across 3,200 theaters. The release from Angel Studios ranks as the top opening ever for an animated faith-based film.

The film features Oscar Isaac as the voice of Jesus and was adapted from Charles Dickens’ The Life of Our Lord. Directed by Seong-ho Jang and co-written with Rob Edwards, The King of Kings follows a young boy who, through bedtime storytelling, imagines himself walking alongside Jesus and witnessing the key events of his life.

"He's Running the Show": 'Brave New World' Writer Teases Captain America's Future in 'Avengers: Doomsday'
Image
Captain America: Brave New World arrives at a time in MCU where the Og Avengers are dearly missed, “a bit of a low point,” to quote Deadpool. But that’s no measure to Sam Wilson aka new Cap’s (Anthony Mackie) leading abilities after all he’s been there right from the start. The character will return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and he’ll be “running the show.”

After Sam Wilson got the shield handed over by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Avengers: Endgame, it took him some time to completely take over the mantle as we saw in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He came in his full Captain America avatar in the latest entry Brave New World. Writer of the feature Rob Edwards recently speculated where Sam Wilson’s story will take him next. "He's Captain America now, so arguably, he's running the show. I think that's the next step,...

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Writer Responds to Critics: “If You Didn’t Enjoy It, Tell Me Why”
Image
Captain America: Brave New World is the latest big movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America and Thunderbolt Ross, played by Harrison Ford.

The film came out in February 2025 after being delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. While it made over $400 million at the box office, reactions have been mixed. Some fans and critics enjoyed the action and performances, while others felt the story was messy and the special effects looked unfinished.

The movie currently holds a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes at 49%, but the audience score is much better sitting at a comfortable 79%.

'He's Running the Show': Captain America: Brave New World Writer Teases Sam Wilson's MCU Future
Image
Captain America: Brave New World puts Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson in the forefront for the first time as the Sentinel of Liberty as he takes on the latest twists in the long-running Multiverse Saga. With the film setting up Wilson to be the new leader of the Avengers, the Captain America sequel's co-screenwriter feels that he's "running the show" as he prepares for the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

Speaking with ComicBookMovie.com, Brave New World scribe Rob Edwards addressed Wilson's future as Captain America following his first big-screen outing as the titular supersoldier. The Captain America follow-up teased its eponymous hero as the leader of the rebuilt Avengers, who haven't been seen together since Endgame, with Wilson rallying the troops following the death of Tony Stark/Iron Man and others. Edwards believes Wilson has shown he's ready to take on such a big mantle.

Captain America: Brave New World Writer Rob Edwards Talks Reshoots And Sam Wilson's MCU Future (Exclusive)
Image
Rob Edwards wrote animated classics like Treasure Island and The Princess and the Frog before making the leap to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Captain America: Brave New World.

As well as explaining how his past work prepared him for the project, he told us about the incredible cast and how animation was used to bring his script to life.

Talk did eventually turn to Captain America: Brave New World, and we wondered how the writer felt about the significant changes made to the story during reshoots.

'King of Kings' Box Office: Animated Biblical Film Set To Break 'Prince of Egypt' Record
Image
Angel Studios' first animated feature, The King of Kings, is poised to steal a box office crown when it opens in theaters this weekend. The faith-based epic, starring Oscar Isaac in the role of Jesus Christ, seemingly has the blessing of cinemagoers, as the movie has already amassed $14.6 million in pre-sales, according to Deadline. Its early box-office performance puts it in pole position for the best-ever opening for an animated Biblical movie, breaking a record held by DreamWorks Animation's The Prince of Egypt ($14.5 million) for the past 27 years.

In addition to toppling The Prince of Egypt's animated retelling of the Book of Exodus, The King of Kings has surpassed the advance ticket sales of Angel Studios' biggest hit, Sound of Freedom, which went on to make over $250 million at the worldwide box office. The studio's latest offering is supported by a special "Kids Go Free" campaign that allows cinema...

'Captain America: Brave New World' Gag Reel Finds Harrison Ford Getting Angry
Image
A new gag reel from behind the scenes of the latest MCU sequel, Captain America: Brave New World, shows what happens when Harrison Ford gets angry...and it’s hilarious. The Star Wars actor joined the world of Marvel this year, taking over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following the passing of William Hurt. Now President of the United States, Ross finds himself becoming part of the superhero world more than ever after transforming into the Red Hulk. Something that Ford had to act out on set. As you’d expect, the memes practically make themselves.

You can check out the gag reel from Captain America: Brave New World below, which also finds the likes of Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, and more in some pretty uncomfortable positions as they work hard to bring the wonders of the MCU to life on the big screen. The standout though is acting veteran Harrison Ford,...

Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, Shira Haas, and Danny Ramirez in Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Captain America: Brave New World gets a digital release next week; 4K, Blu-ray, DVD release set for May
Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, Shira Haas, and Danny Ramirez in Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
After a bumpy ride through production, Captain America: Brave New World reached theatres on February 14th – and over the last two months, it has earned about $413 million at the global box office. Now, SuperHeroHype has learned that the film is set to receive a digital release next week, on April 15th, with the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release to follow on May 13th.

The film went into production in March of 2023, with filming lasting through June. In December of ’23, another screenwriter was brought onto the project to write new material for reshoots, which seemed to be quite substantial. It was said that the reshoots were primarily done to rework three major action sequences – and this included adding Giancarlo Esposito into the mix as Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society, while also dropping a Serpent Society character that was played by wrestler Seth Rollins.

Here’s the official information on the film,...

'Captain America: Brave New World' Writer Reacts to Negative Critic Reviews
Image
One of the writers onCaptain America: Brave New World is pushing back against some of the negative reviews the movie has received. Captain America: Brave New World opened in theaters on Feb. 14, 2025 and was certainly not the big start to 2025 that Marvel Studios was likely hoping for, as it garnered a 48% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes — making it only the third MCU film to get a rotten rating alongside 2021's Eternals (47%) and 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%). For what it's worth, the audience's reaction was mixed with positivity.

Speaking with The Direct, screenwriter Rob Edwards explained why he thinks critics missed the market on Captain America: Brave New World. Edwards is one of five credited screenwriters on the fourth Captain America movie, and also has a story by credit in the film. When asked if he was surprised by the difference in audience reaction compared to critical reaction, Edwards...

'I Think You Guys Got It Wrong': Captain America: Brave New World Writer Hits Back at MCU Film's Critics
Image
Captain America: Brave New World continues the Marvel Cinematic Universe's string of polarizing post-Avengers: Endgame releases, with the superhero sequel earning mixed reviews from critics as its theatrical run nears its end. As the Valentine's Day release keeps getting little love from film buffs, one of its writers believes they "got it wrong" with their reviews.

Speaking with The Direct during WonderCon, Brave New World co-screenwriter Rob Edwards addressed the negative feedback from critics following the MCU blockbuster's release this past February. The Captain America sequel has a 48% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and one of the worst marks for an MCU movie on CinemaScore. When asked if the reception was what he expected, Edwards said, "I kinda did, kinda didn't. I think similar things have happened... with a lot of different projects. It was weird to me, because some of my friends who are critics, I said, 'I think you guys missed it.

Captain America: Brave New World Writer Responds To Negative Reviews; "I Think You Guys Got It Wrong"
Image
Deadpool and Wolverine proved to be a much-needed box office jolt for Marvel Studios, and also went over pretty well with fans and critics. Unfortunately, Captain America: Brave New World wasn't quite able to keep the momentum going.

Though the movie did recently pass $400 million worldwide (which didn't always seem likely), the critical reception was mixed-negative, and the fourth Captain America movie is currently sitting at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 331 reviews.

Brave New World does have its defenders, but it's probably fair to say that the movie hasn't resonated with the Marvel faithful in a way those involved with bringing the film to the screen will have been hoping for.

While speaking to The Direct at WonderCon over the weekend, one of the movie's six credited writes, Rob Edwards, was asked if he was surprised by the critical response.

"I kinda did, kinda didn't. I think similar things have happened.

While Disney did not respond to request for comment today over the Tiana series cancellation, sources confirm that going forward neither animation studio will be providing long form content for Disney +.

With a Tiana original special now the focus, we hear, it seems that creatively a Tiana series had been going nowhere fast for several years. That creative funk was why all we’ve seen the past four years is a single image from the proposed Tiana series.

First announced in December 2020, the project was expected to feature Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which revolved around Disney’s first Black princess.

Set in New Orleans during the 1920s,...

Film Review: Anthony Mackie in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’
Image
Chicago – In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Iron Man may have started it all, but it was Captain America who provided the beating heart that carried it through and helped broaden it beyond just Tony Stark snark. These days, as Marvel movies have been a little lost at sea, this first Captain America movie since “Civil War” operates as a bit of a back-to-basics reset.

Taking over the shield for Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America is still a little wary of his new role … working for the government and one time adversary, Thaddeus Ross, who is now U.S. President. President Ross is trying to negotiate an international treaty, but things go haywire when “super soldier” Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) tries to assassinate him in the White House. In the span of about three minutes, Captain America figures out it’s a case of mind control, and sets...

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Review

Captain America: Brave New World opens with Sam Wilson (Mackie), the new Captain America, on a mission for the US government, lead by newly elected President (and former Hulk hunter) Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). When he finds himself slap bang in the middle of an international incident in which his friend Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) was apparently brainwashed,...

“Captain America: Brave New World” Brings New Challenges for Sam Wilson
Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, Shira Haas, and Danny Ramirez in Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film “Captain America: Brave New World,” Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson, now fully embracing his role as the new Captain America. This fourth installment in the Captain America series promises to thrust Wilson into an international incident that will test his mettle as the star-spangled Avenger.

Directed by Julius Onah, the film is set to explore Wilson’s journey as he navigates the complexities of being Captain America in a world still adjusting to the aftermath of previous MCU events. The story, penned by a team of writers including Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, and Dalan Musson, is expected to present a more grounded approach compared to recent Marvel offerings.

Harrison Ford joins the cast as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, now the President of the United States, replacing the late William Hurt in the role. Ford’s inclusion suggests a significant political element to the plot,...

Captain America: Brave New World director addresses the reshoots, losing Seth Rollins, and adding Giancarlo Esposito

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit some speed bumps recently. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels under-performed at the box office and some of the Disney+ shows were poorly received… but the universe rebounded with the success of Deadpool & Wolverine last year, and the next addition to the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to reach theatres on February 14th. During an interview with ComicBook.com,...

Anthony Mackie took to Instagram Tuesday to clarify his viral comment about what Captain America represents.

[Captain America] has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”

Over the past 24 hours, Mackie drew criticism for comments made during an onstage interview in Rome. While promoting his new film “Captain America: Brave New World,” Mackie said that Cap “represents a lot of different things,” but “the term ‘America'” is not one of them.

"This movie was a ton of fun to write," Edwards posted on Instagram. "The Marvel sandbox is unparalleled, and the producers there are the best and the brightest. The movie comes out next month, but advanced tickets are on sale now. I can’t wait for you guys to see it. I’m hoping this movie will be to young men what The Princess and the Frog was to young women."

Though Edwards doesn't directly compare Brave New World to The Princess and the Frog, the reference has raised a few eyebrows. While this mention might seem a bit random, it's...

Captain America: Brave New World running time makes it the shortest Captain America movie

The next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to reach theatres on February 14, 2025 – and this one is going to be keeping viewers in theatres for a shorter time than previous films in the Captain America franchise have. Theatre listings have revealed that Captain America: Brave New World has a running time of 118 minutes, so it comes in at 6 minutes shorter than Captain America: The First Avenger (124 minutes), 18 minutes shorter than Captain America: The Winter Soldier (136 minutes), and 30 minutes shorter than Captain America: Civil War (148 minutes). While it ranks on the lower end of Marvel Cinematic Universe running times, there are several MCU movies that are shorter than 118 minutes: The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and The Marvels.
