This story is an excerpt from Empire of the Elite, a blockbuster new history of Condé Nast by New York Times reporter Michael Grynbaum.
Since 1964, Irving “Swifty” Lazar had hosted Hollywood’s premier see-and-be-seen soiree, an annual Academy Awards watch party that by the early 1990s was held at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. Swifty was a legendary talent agent who had represented icons like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. He masterminded his party like a Lilliputian Stalin, enforcing a seating chart that separated A-listers from B-listers and chastising guests who attempted to stand up and use the restroom during the ceremony. Entry was coveted and sternly policed; in 1983, on assignment for Time, Graydon Carter himself donned a tuxedo and tried to sweet-talk his way past the door. The valet refused to even park his car.
When Swifty died in 1993, Graydon — recently anointed as the new editor of Vanity Fair — seized his chance.

New details have emerged about David Lowery’s Mother Mary courtesy of a new Vogue cover story featuring its Oscar winning star Anne Hathaway.
The A24 film casts Hathaway as the title character, a pop star described as a Lady Gaga-meets-Taylor Swift hybrid who flees a tour and winds up seeking out an old friend and fashion designer (Michaela Coel) who helped shape her public persona. Based on interviews Vogue writer Maya Singer included in the piece, Mother Mary sounds like a challenging project for all involved, or at least “intense” per Singer who describes the (nearly) finished product as “a very weird movie.”
Much of the film “turns on the making of a dress, which is spectacular,” and most of the action finds Hathaway and Coel hanging out in a 13th century barn where those involved may have gone “temporarily, mildly insane,” Singer writes. There are “a...

One of the true musical geniuses of the 20th century, Brian Wilson, just passed away at the age of 82. The Beach Boys legend is best remembered for masterpieces like Pet Sounds and the troubled Smile — and not for the time he serenaded the Tanner family on Full House, which Wilson himself didn’t remember doing.
The Beach Boys obviously had a ton of songs about surfing, from “Surfin’ U.S.A.” to “Surfer Girl” to “Surfin’ Safari.” Then there’s the hauntingly beautiful “Surf’s Up,” which feels more like a rainy funeral than a day at the beach.
But despite the fact that his music was at the forefront of surf culture in the ‘60s, Wilson didn’t actually surf. As he told David Letterman in 1988, he tried it only once, but quickly abandoned the activity when the board nearly took out his eye.
Wilson has told this anecdote multiple times over the years,...

Locarno’s Wolfgang Tillmans Poster Offers “Image of a World in Which We Can All Live, Work Together”
The Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland has unveiled the poster for its 78th edition this summer, created by Turner Prize-winning German artist Wolfgang Tillmans after last year’s poster from Annie Leibovitz.
The poster for Locarno 2025 depicts the festival’s trademark leopard on a tree branch “amid an acid trance of yellow and purple abstraction,” according to the fest. “Guided by a profound sense of curiosity, Tillmans seeks to expand the poetic possibilities of the medium of photography while addressing the fundamental question of what it means to create pictures in an increasingly image-saturated world.”
Tillmans produced the poster using an experimental Xerox technique, which gives images a blurry texture and “allows the artist to approach composition through the lens of early digital abstraction,” Locarno said. “Combined with its psychedelic color palette, the poster is both a throwback to ’80s and ’90s iterations of the Locarno poster, which were often...

The moment
On Feb. 15, 1985, The Breakfast Club was released, setting the standard for teen films and cementing writer-director John Hughes as the master of the genre, while making its ensemble instantly famous. There are aspects to the beloved film that have not aged well; however, The Breakfast Club‘s impact on filmmaking and the zeitgeist — from its poster to its cast to its music to its universal message — cannot be understated four decades later.
The setup
Hughes had made a name for himself the prior year with his directorial debut, Sixteen Candles. Up to this time, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary rebellion films in the 1950s to beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. But Hughes had the uncanny ability to capture both the joys and the trials of the teenage years, both in written word...

As “The Chosen” Season 5 prepares to premiere in theaters next month, creator/exec producer Dallas Jenkins has unveiled three key art posters — shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz — to promote the upcoming eight episodes.
Jenkins and series star Jonathan Roumie shared the posters while on a press tour stop in New York’s Times Square on Thursday. The three posters will promote the three parts of Season 5, dubbed “The Chosen: Last Supper,” which will be released by 5&2 Studios — the newly-formed production company now behind the global hit — in U.S. and Canada theaters starting March 28.
“What makes her work so extraordinary is she tells stories — in seconds — and then you look deeper and you find more,” Jenkins said in a statement regarding Leibovitz.. “We’re trying to tell stories of some of the most iconic people who ever lived. They actually lived and breathed and had fear and doubt and felt things like joy and betrayal.

These days, Monty Python is considered “The Beatles of Comedy,” presumably because of the quality of their work, their Britishness and the fact that they won’t stop fighting over money now that the group’s broken up.
But as hard as it may be to believe, there was a time when the Pythons had to sell themselves to America. While Monty Python’s Flying Circus was already a hit in the U.K. and Canada, the show didn’t air on U.S. public broadcasters until 1974. They did still have some American fans, thanks to the film And Now For Something Completely Different and the Pythons’ album releases.
But in 1973, at the end of their first-ever Canadian tour, the Pythons, minus John Cleese, traveled to California in order to promote their albums to American audiences. In addition to posing for a Rolling Stone photo shoot with Annie Leibowitz, they...

Credit to them, The Naked Gun series never tried to be gracious with their humor. Between its slapstick, sight gags, play on words, and juvenile humor, writer-directors Jerry Zucker, David Zucker, and the late Jim Abrahams threw every kind of joke at you throughout the parody trilogy starring Leslie Nielsen as bumbling police detective Frank Drebin. Regardless of how unsubtle they are in their execution, The Naked Gun films, even its inferior sequels, are purely delightful, and you can find a new gag or punchline upon every re-watch. In certain cases, the Zuckers and Abrahams' humor can touch the third rail, not so much from a socially insensitive lens, but by landing in hot water in court. Promotional material for the final film in the trilogy, The Naked Gun: 33 1/3: The Final Insult, spoofed Demi Moore's famous Vanity Fair cover photo, something its photographer, Annie Leibovitz, was not amused by.

Barry Diller is ready to tell his story.

Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. And it was a steamroller after that.”

After a half-century of photographing the rich and tremendously famous, Annie Leibovitz has focused her lens on a majestic beast of a different sort, snapping photos of the Locarno Film Festival’s iconic leopard.
Leibovitz designed the official poster for the 2024 Locarno Film Festival, which Locarno unveiled on Tuesday. The poster shows the feline mascot against the Alpine backdrop of the Lago Maggiore, an image meant to evoke the contrast inherent in the pristine setting for Europe’s most avant-garde A-list festival. “Like the Locarno Film Festival, the leopard is captivating, an out-of-place icon in an evocative setting,” goes the festival blurb.
“Annie has produced an iconic image characteristic of her idiosyncratic language,” said Locarno festival pesident Maja Hoffmann, noting the image of the leopard, with its “unique beauty and fragility,” set against the Locarno mountains, “turn it into a poignant symbol of our times.”

Louis Vuitton is reviving its Core Values campaign with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The campaign, shot by iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz, features the tennis champions, a rare off-the-court pairing, ascending to the summit of Italy’s Dolomites mountain range. The imagery fits the campaign’s tagline: “There are Journeys that turn into Legends.”
The newly released campaign features 42-year-old Federer and 37-year-old Nadal 3,000 meters high, standing tall on the mountain peak. In the imagery, Federer sports a Monogram Christopher backpack while Nadal is pictured with the Monogram Eclipse version.
For the campaign, Nadal and Federer are not competitors but instead companions for one another on the journey up the mountain — a visual metaphor for their careers which have been “marked by deep mutual respect and friendship,” according to the luxury brand.

On Thursday, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter, Suri Cruise, turns 18 years old.
Suri rose to fame as an infant in 2006 when she was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair with Cruise and Holmes at five months old. Photographed by Annie Leibowitz, the cover shows Cruise swaddling a young Suri in his jacket as Holmes looks down in adoration.
In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce after six years of marriage. Following the divorce and Cruise’s involvement with the group Scientology, Holmes has kept Suri out of the spotlight and away from Cruise. Suri has no relationship with Cruise.
In 2023, Holmes told Glamour magazine she was protecting Suri from the public because “she was so visible at a young age.”
Suri’s last public appearance with her father was at Disney World Florida in July 2012. Photographs captured the father-daughter pair attending rides and spending time together at the amusement park.

Cultural landmarks Book Soup and Vroman’s book store in Pasadena are for sale.
Vroman’s is the oldest book store in Southern California, founded in 1895 and still owned by the same family. Owner Joel Sheldon announced on social media Thursday that both stores and another Vroman’s in Hastings Ranch are on the block, along with Book Soup in West Hollywood. Sheldon, age 80, said he was retiring after 50 years of book selling.
“Vroman’s deserves new ownership with the vision, energy, and commitment necessary to take it successfully into the future,” Sheldon wrote on the store’s social media accounts. Although the sale invokes “a time of some uncertainty,” he also said he had “optimism and excitement for what the future can bring for Vroman’s and our community.”

Rolling Stone was founded in 1967 in San Francisco by a music critic and his 21-year-old protégé, a Berkeley dropout who borrowed money from his future in-laws to get it off the ground. For decades, Rolling Stone gripped tight to the beliefs and cultural blinders of that boomer beginning. Most of its rocker heroes from that Haight-Ashbury autumn were white and male, and those were the kind of people who stayed center stage at Rolling Stone. The misogyny and racism of that founding era lingered longer.

Miley Cyrus is sharing more revelations from her younger days in the latest installment of her "Used to Be Young" TikTok interview series. In part 15, posted on Aug. 30, the "Endless Summer Vacation" singer reveals a behind-the-scenes tidbit about her controversial 2008 Vanity Fair cover, where she was famously photographed topless by Annie Leibovitz, covered only by a white sheet. At the time, Miley was 15 years old, and according to her, her sister Noah played a big part in how the scandalous shot came to be.
"Everybody knows the controversy of the photo, but they don't really know the behind-the-scenes, which is always much more meaningful," Miley starts in her TikTok. Tony Bennett, who died today at the age of 96, was a singular figure in music — a classic crooner who weathered the fickle winds of popular music over multiple decades by adapting but never fundamentally changing who he was. His initial rise and success were astounding in their own right, but the second half of Bennett’s career is just as fascinating. Starting in the Nineties, Bennett didn’t so much try to court younger audiences or artists but find some kind of common ground with them.

During a star-studded promotional screening of “Deep Throat,” Joan Didion shares a prescient observation. She doesn’t want to — at least, not in that moment. All she wants is to enjoy the lavish party put on to promote Minx magazine. Check that: All she really wants is to be left in peace to use the restroom, but Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond), the editor-in-chief of Minx, can’t contain her giddy inquiries long enough for the acclaimed journalist to relieve her bladder. Joyce wants Joan to write for the magazine; something about “Deep Throat” and what it reflects about the shifting ‘70s culture, if not society at large. Joan isn’t all that interested, and instead encourages Joyce to pen the piece herself — but not before offering her reluctant, rushed assessment of the landmark porno being screened in the adjacent auditorium. “I don’t think it was their intent,” Joan says,...

Graydon Carter, the publishing icon who steered Vanity Fair for 25 years and hosted many a Mediterranean téte-á-téte, is returning to Antibes and the legendary Hotel du Cap this year for a party partnership between his digital dispatch Air Mail and Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
Ahead of the May 23 event, Carter talked to The Hollywood Reporter about curating the perfect Cannes event, the shortlist of people who have his cell phone number, and why anything longer than a 15-second toast is too long.
How are you feeling about returning to Cannes?
It’s funny because the dinners we used to do during the Cannes Film Festival were the most enjoyable nights of the job [at Vanity Fair]. In my 25 years there, the Oscar party became so enormous that it was stressful and big business, in a way. Cannes was about movies and enjoyment and just having a great time.

McAdams relocated to Canada where she grew up and opted to step away from Hollywood as a whole.

Cara Delevingne Says Concerning Paparazzi Images Led to Rehab Stay, Sobriety Journey: “I Was Not Ok”
Cara Delevingne sparked widespread concern after paparazzi images captured at a private airport in L.A. last September showed the model and actress looking disheveled and acting erratically upon returning from Burning Man. Now, in a revealing cover interview with Vogue, the 30-year-old said she’s grateful for those images because it sent her on a path to rehab and sobriety.
“I hadn’t slept. I was not Ok,” she told Vogue writer Chioma Nnadi. “It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, Ok, I don’t look well. You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for.”
For the interview, conducted in late January, Delevingne confessed that she was four months sober after a stint in rehab late last year. “I’ve had interventions of a sort, but I wasn’t ready.

On December 8, 1980 — just hours before he was murdered by a deranged fan near the entranceway to his New York apartment building — John Lennon welcomed photographer Annie Leibowitz into the home so she could take his photo for the cover of Rolling Stone. “The session took place in a bright, sunny room overlooking the park,” Yoko Ono recalled in 2004. “We were feeling comfortable because it was Annie, whom we respected and trusted, so John seemed not to have any problem taking off his clothes.”

Jennifer Lopez is loving being Mrs. Affleck.
The singer opens up about her and Ben Affleck’s marriage in a candid new interview with Vogue.
The magazine mentions that The New York Times published an opinion piece calling Lopez out for taking Affleck’s name not long after they tied the knot in July.
The actress insists, “What? Really? People are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together. We’re husband and wife. I’m proud of that. I don’t think that’s a problem.”

Queen Elizabeth II‘s corgis have found a new home. According to multiple reports, the Queen’s beloved pets will live with the Duke and Duchess of York, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
The pair, who divorced in 1996, both still live at the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate. It was Ferguson a.k.a. “Fergie,” who found the puppies, who were reportedly gifted to the late monarch by the Duke.
The Duchess was said to have bonded with Her Majesty over dog-walking and riding horses, and even after her divorce, continued her friendship with the Queen by walking dogs through the Windsor estate.
The Queen, who died Thursday at the age of 96, is said to have had four dogs at the time of her death, two Pembroke Welsh corgis named Muick and Sandy, a dorgi called Candy, and a cocker spaniel named Lissy. It’s also been reported that she had over 100 horses.

All the queen’s horses and all the queen’s dogs — what’s going to happen to Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved animals now that she has died?
Queen Elizabeth adored animals, especially horses, cows and, perhaps most of all, her corgis.
The monarch, 96, died on Sept. 8, and senior members of the Royal Family rushed to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to be at her bedside.

And while her life was chock-full of impressive achievements and interests over the course of her 70-year reign, perhaps none was more enduring or long-spanning as her love for animals.

Pizza Hut, luxury luggage and Spitting Image: How Mikhail Gorbachev became an unlikely cultural icon
Mikhail Gorbachev walks into a Pizza Hut. The year is 1997, six years after the end of the Soviet Union, and the leader who oversaw its dissolution is in Moscow’s Red Square to star in one of the strangest television adverts ever produced. After taking a seat alongside his granddaughter Anastasia Virganskaya, Gorbachev is spotted by two men at a nearby table and a debate over his legacy ensues. “Because of him we have economic confusion!” claims a dour, middle-aged man. “Because of him we have opportunity!” fires back the younger of the pair, perhaps his son. Certainly the two are intended to represent a generational gap. While the elder complains about political instability and chaos, the younger talks of freedom and hope. It’s left to an older woman to settle the debate. “Because of him, we have many things…” she says, “…like Pizza Hut!” On that, they can all agree.

“Nightclubbing,” the first-ever documentary about the legendary New York City nightclub Max’s Kansas City, which from 1965 through 1981 was a hotbed for the city’s rock, glam, punk and new wave scenes, has announced a series of screenings across the globe in July and August.
The film — the full title of which is “Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC” — will screen along with another doc from Chip Baker Films, “Sid: The Final Curtain,” which is a brief documentary about the late Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious’ final concert, which took place at Max’s.
“Nightclubbing” is the sixth music documentary from Spanish filmmaker Danny Garcia (others include “The Rise and Fall of The Clash” and “Rolling Stone: The Life and Death of Brian Jones” about the group’s founder and original leader). When I was a political reporter in Washington, I used to loathe the White House Correspondents Dinner. I hated how it portrayed Beltway journalism as a game. How it reduced the project of government accountability to performative antagonism practiced daily by reporters in White House press briefings — a performance exposed annually at a dinner where the most powerful people in the world would rub elbows and yuck it up about funny “inside jokes” like George W. Bush’s bungling of the Iraq War and the media’s culpability in helping him do it.
