Mario Martone’s ‘Fuori’ With Valeria Golino Gets 7½-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere
Image
Mario Martone’s Cannes Film Festival Competition title Fuori had its world premiere Tuesday night at the Lumière Theater, earning a 7 1/2–minute ovation.

From a script by Ippolita Di Majo and Martone, and starring Valeria Golino as writer Goliarda Sapienza, Fuori is inspired by Sapienza’s 1983 autobiography L’Università di Rebibbia (The University of Rebibbia) and follows her journey as the Italian publishing world rejects L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), the book she dedicated a decade to writing.

Reeling from this blow, Sapienza is promptly arrested and imprisoned for jewelry theft, but there is a silver lining: she forms solid bonds with her fellow inmates and continues to meet with them over the course of a long, hot summer. In particular, Sapienza becomes close with a political activist and repeat offender named Roberta (Matilda De Angelis).

Ultimately, the relationship between the two women serves to inspire Sapienza to...

‘Fuori’ Review: Valeria Golino Exudes Humanity In Mario Martone’s Refreshing Biopic Of A Struggling Literary Pioneer – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Literary biopics are hard to pull off, and even harder to market (1995’s Total Eclipse missed a trick with “Leonardo DiCaprio Is Arthur Rimbaud!”). Even well-known U.S. writers tend to be the domain of the indie world, resulting in films as respectable but hardly lucrative as Capote (2005), Kill Your Darlings (2013) and Shirley (2020). The odds are, then, that a movie dedicated to a brief period in the life of Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) — a noted Italian feminist and political activist denied her due until two years after her death — isn’t likely to cause a splash in international markets. However, Mario Martone’s thoughtful film does work quite well as a character study, in the same way that Marielle Heller’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? captured the struggles of a failing writer with big ideas.

Sapienza is played by Valeria Golino, who recently directed a six-part adaptation of the author...

Netflix Italy Orders Toxic Masculinity Comedy Series From ‘Antonia’ Producer Groenlandia
Image
Netflix is putting toxic masculinity under the comedy microscope.

The streamer has ordered Maschi Veri, an eight-part comedy series from Italy in which four alpha male friends in their forties find themselves facing their own prejudices and the paradigms of toxic masculinity in a world that is moving towards social and gender equality. Without losing themselves, they are forced to rediscover their place in society and their relationships.

Maurizio Lastrico, Matteo Martari, Francesco Montanari and Pietro Sermonti star as the friends in the show, which is from Banijay’s Italian drama house Groenlandia. Furio Andreotti, Giulia Calenda and Ugo Ripamonti are the writers, with Groenlandia’s Matteo Rovere producing. Matteo Oleotto and Letizia Lamartire are directing.

Thony, Sarah Felberbaum, Laura Adriani, Alice Lupparelli, Corrado Fortuna and Nicole Grimaudo complete the cast. Show is slated for a 2025 launch.

For Netflix, the series is its latest out of Italy that explores contemporary masculinity.

First Images, Full Cast, and Soundtrack Announced for Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love
Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.

We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).

The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.

The newly re-titled To Rome With Love will open in Italy on 20th April...

10 Images from Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love; Full Cast and Soundtrack Listing Announced
Earlier today we learned that Woody Allen’s latest film, Nero Fiddled, had been retitled To Rome With Love. Now the first images from the Rome-set pic have gone online. The film is comprised of four separate vignettes and tells the story of a number of people in Italy—some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors—and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into. I loved the hell out of Midnight in Paris and Allen taking a vignette approach to Rome is promising, so I’m really looking forward to the pic. Not to mention the stellar cast that includes Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Alison Pill, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page. After the jump you’ll find the first images from the film along with a full cast and soundtrack listing. To Rome With Love opens on June 22nd.
