A new buddy comedy movie from Netflix, drawing parallels to Bad Boys, has instantly become a global hit. The popular franchise, featuring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith as Miami detectives, continues to be a commercial success and is largely well-received by audiences. Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiered last year and generated over $400 million before releasing on Netflix, where it managed to chart at number one.

The streaming service also houses many more high-performing action comedy films, including Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and The Union. Back in Action, starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, was another major hit upon release. The streaming movie boasted impressive viewership numbers and quickly climbed the Netflix charts, despite poor audience reception.

Almost Cops Is An Instant Success The Buddy Comedy Is Charting On Netflix

Almost Cops recently debuted on Netflix and is similar to Bad Boys, incorporating humor and teaming up a pair of characters.

In recent years, Netflix has made a visible effort to combine original releases in English with films and shows in foreign languages. Its dedication to diversity has paid off, as many titles have become extremely successful.

One recent example is Almost Cops. The Dutch buddy comedy premiered on the platform on Jul. 11, and it immediately became a success on Netflix with little to no promo. In its first week, Almost Cops debuted in second place in the Top 10, Tudum reveals.

For the week between Jul. 7 and 13, Almost Cops received 10 million views, with 16.1 million hours viewed. The buddy cop comedy's viewership count is impressive, considering it only had two days to make an impact. The film debuted in the Top 10 in 73 countries around the world, including the U.S., where it debuted in ninth place.

The film’s original title, Bad Boa’s, holds a specific cultural meaning in the Netherlands that informs the premise. With 21 Days: The Heineken Kidnapping there is a message at the start of the film to make it clear that it’s a fictional account of events, as if to emphasise that it is not fully the truth, it’s like a legal catch all statement to say they can make it all up. This warning though is probably due to the fact that one of the kidnappers who is still alive is not very happy with the emphasis not only on his character, but the fact that he appears to be somewhat of a sociopath. A kidnap thriller titled The Heineken Kidnapping aka De Heineken ontvoering is being set for release in the Netherlans this October. This is a real life story of how Freddy Heineken was kidnapped and ransomed for $16 million Euros. Freddy was eventually freed, but his kidnappers, including Willem Holleeder and Cor Van Hout, had a less than peaceful life thereafter. Hout would end up murderered and Holleeder is still in jail, serving a term for extortion. Rutger Hauer will star as Freddy Heineken. Austin, TX - Billy Bob Thorton’s, The King of Luck, documentary on Willie Nelson, will screen Saturday, March 19 for the Closing Night at the SXSW Film Festival.

The World Premiere film explores Willie Nelson “the man, the songwriter, the friend, the father, legendary performer and champion of the family farmer.”

Also announced today, a work-in-progress version of the Judd Apatow produced ‘Bridesmaids,’ will screen. The film is directed by Paul Feig, and stars Kristin Wig and Annie Mumolo.

Rainn Wilson’s short film, The Blitzen Trapper Massacre, will be having it’s World Premiere as well, Umshini Wam, a short film from Harmony Korine featuring South African act Die Antwoord, and Hit So Hard, P. David Ebersole’s documentary on Hole drummer Patty Schemel, among others will screen.

Hollywoodnews.com: The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival announced that Billy Bob Thornton’s “The King of Luck,” a documentary about Willie Nelson, will be thus year’s Closing Night Film, screening on Saturday, March 19.

In addition, SXSW announced more features and shorts for the 2011 event, including a work-in-progress screening of Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids,” starring (and co-written by) Kristen Wiig and produced by Judd Apatow; “Umshini Wam,” a short film from Harmony Korine featuring South African act Die Antwoord; and “Hit So Hard,” P. David Ebersole’s documentary on Hole drummer Patty Schemel, among others.

Attention Austin-ites: some last minute additions were just announced for the South by Southwest 2011 Film Festival lineup. They include the Closing Night Film, "The King of Luck," a documentary about musician Willie Nelson and, judging from the publicity photo, old timey Western streets, directed by actor (and musician) Billy Bob Thornton. SXSW also added a bunch of cool special events, including a work-in-progress screening of the upcoming comedy "Bridesmaids," which has an insane creative pedigree. It's directed by "Freaks and Geeks" creator Paul Feig, produced by Judd Apatow, co-written and starring Kristen Wiig, with a cast that also includes Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne. No word on who will be in attendance on that yet, but it should be a fun event (two years ago, Sam Raimi brought his "Drag Me to Hell" while it was still a work-in-progress for a raucous screening that's become the stuff of Internet legend...
