Dispatches From The Picket Lines: Latine Writers & Actors In L.A. & NYC; ‘Roseanne’ And ‘The Conners’ Teams Reunite At Radford
Image
This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.

At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

On the scene outside of Warner Bros today...

‘The Last Possession’ Review
Image
Stars: Stephen Brodie, Cassie Shea Watson, Lourelle Jensen, Sawyer Bell, Tom Proctor, Patricia Rae | Written by Greg Shouse | Directed by Dan Riddle

As The Last Possession opens financial problems have forced Kent Peroni, his wife Stephanie and their two kids Jack and Gabby (Lourelle Jensen) to move into the house Kent’s father Roger left him. Roger was a violent drunk up until the day he killed himself and going back there is the last thing Kent wants.

It doesn’t help that they’ve barely moved in when an earthquake rattles the area and opens up a strange hole in the backyard. It doesn’t take long before more strange things start happening and Gabby is seeing her grandfather’s ghost.

Writer Greg Shouse and director Dan Riddle (Technically Crazy) start The Last Possession off like a typical haunted house film. A family under stress, a house full of bad memories,...

Studio: Lionsgate

Susan Sarandon (ctr.) comes between Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro--for a moment--in The Big Wedding.

Robert De Niro (Limitless) and Diane Keaton (Morning Glow) star in the romantic comedy The Big Wedding, which received awful reviews from the critics, but certainly doesn’t lack in the big-name co-star department.

After learning his biological mother (Patricia Rae) is unexpectedly flying halfway across the world for the event, the duo must work together to convince her they are still happily married, much to the amusement of their adult children and friends.

The Big Wedding Review
Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

At some weddings, more than a handful of guests forcibly feign joy at their friend or family member’s matrimony, aware that any outpouring of adverse sentiment – however justifiable – would paint them as a blasphemously selfish anomaly within an aura of exultation. Those with a grudge to bear assume a mask to layer over any underlying misgivings or tensions, thus avoiding any unwelcome disputes. Movie weddings, however, rarely go off without a hitch. There are always secrets to be told, never untold. It’s only fitting, then, that those with the most skeletons in The Big Wedding are central to the wedding aisle, and whose voices carry to the farthest pew.

Being that this star-studded remake of the 2006 French film Mon frère se marie has added an adjective to its original title of The Wedding, it’s evident that director Justin Zackham believes the idiom that bigger is indeed better.

'The Big Wedding' review: Robert De Niro in lacklustre comedy
Justin Zackham
Director: Justin Zackham; Screenwriter: Justin Zackham; Starring: Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Robin Williams, Amanda Seyfried, Susan Sarandon; Running time: 89 mins; Certificate: 15

Despite an A-List line-up, The Big Wedding feels small in many ways. One can only assume there was a big fat paycheck involved for the likes of Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton to negotiate a script with such lack of ambition, laughs and insight. But then, the runtime does force them to drag out a story that could have been ripped from a sitcom.

The desperation is evident early on when Ellie (Keaton) lets herself into the home of ex-husband Don (De Niro) and is forced to endure the spectacle of his head disappearing up the skirt of his second wife Bebe (Sarandon). To make the situation ickier, it gradually becomes apparent that Bebe was once Ellie's best friend, but they've somehow managed to stay on amicable terms.

See This, Skip That: From Gatsby to Maisie - Your Weekend Movie Plan
Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in The Great Gatsby (1974)
The Great Gatsby has the glitz and The Big Wedding a banquet hall full of stars, but only one film has People's critic jazzed. Here's what to see, what to skip and what to seek out this weekend at the movies. See This:•The Great Gatsby:Oh look, a disco ball exploded all over the Jazz Age! Of course director Baz Luhrmann's take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic is an overstuffed, overblown mess (in 3-D, no less), but what are you gonna do - not be part of the conversation surrounding the buzziest movie of the weekend? Besides,...

Movie Review: 'The Big Wedding'
The Big Wedding

Starring Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Topher Grace, Ben Barnes, Amanda Seyfried, and Robin Williams

Directed by Justin Zackham

Rated R

When you have a film with a talented group led by Robert De Niro you should expect something better than so-so. That’s not the case with The Big Wedding. The film has the appeal of a Nora Ephron film and the polish of a Lifetime movie. The characters aren’t likeable or even relatable and every one of their arcs is met with clichés. I didn’t have a terrible time with it but it’s not the film you should see in theaters, only on TV when it’s playing on TNT. Also, it's a waste of talent.

Don (De Niro) is the father of three children, Lyla (Katherine Heigl), Jared (Topher Grace) and Alejandro (Ben Barnes) who was adopted from Colombia.

‘The Big Wedding’ Review
The title of The Big Wedding refers to the impending marriage between Alejandro (Ben Barnes), a well-to-do Harvard graduate, and Missy (Amanda Seyfried), who is his longtime friend and a young woman who comes from a wealthy, white collar background. Alejandro realizes that, in order to secure the blessing of his biological mother (Patricia Rae) – a traditional Catholic from Colombia who is literally named Madonna – he will have to fib a little about the lifestyle of his adopted parents.

Problem is, Alejandro’s adopted dad Donald (Robert De Niro) and mom Ellie (Diane Keaton) got divorced over a decade ago, and Don has since lived with his girlfriend – and Ellie’s former best friend – Bebe (Susan Sarandon). So, in an effort to keep everything running smoothly, Bebe willingly volunteers to remove herself from the picture and let ...

The Big Wedding

Cast: Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Topher Grace, Amanda Seyfried, Robin Williams, Ben Barnes, Patricia Rae

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: April 26, 2013

Plot: A former married couple (De Niro and Keaton) must pretend they are still together to impress their adopted son’s (Barnes) biological mother (Rae) when she comes into town for his wedding.

Who’S It For? Look at the names featured in this movie. “My, what a guest list!” The problem with this roster is that liking these actors is actually not a good reason to slap down dinero for De Niro et al. If you have affection for the likes of De Niro, Keaton, and Sarandon, this will be a painful experience (and some people do like movie pain). So, The Big Wedding: sadists only.

Expectations: The more people laughing on a poster,...

The Big Wedding Trailer Online
Amanda Seyfried
When you have a cast list that boasts Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace, Amanda Seyfried, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Ben Barnes and more, you might reasonably expect something fairly funny and interesting. But then you remember that they’ve all got a dodgy movie or two on their collective CVs. So you'll have to make up your own mind about the trailer for The Big Wedding, which is online over at Apple.A knockabout family comedy / drama / farce, the film finds Amanda Seyfried’s Missy O’Connor all set to marry Alenjandro Griffin (Ben Barnes), a Colombian adopted by Don (De Niro) and Ellie (Keaton) when he was young. But Don and Ellie have long been divorced, and Don now lives with Bebe McBride (Sarandon), Ellie’s former best friend (former for obvious reasons). Then Alenjandro’s birth mother (Patricia Rae) arrives for the nuptials. Vine swings in, takes 'Charge'
Amanda Brooks and Patricia Rae will star in Taking Charge, a feature that is intended as the first of a slate of projects from newly formed Vine Entertainment. Vine founder and CEO Gino Cabanas plans to use private capital to produce a series of low-budget features in various genres. "The Vine intends to challenge many of Hollywood's preconceived notions about indie outfits," Cabanas said. "The strength of our financing places us in a strong position to nurture the careers of talented writers, producers and directors as well as shepherd their projects from start to finish." Charge is scheduled to shoot next month in Arizona under the direction of Dick Fisher, who was the cinematographer, editor and one of the producers of The Brothers McMullen. The drama is described as a cautionary tale of a spoiled girl who takes matters into her own hands after she is cut off by her billionaire father. Brooks plays the girl, while Rae plays a paramedic. Brooks, repped by Paradigm, is filming the Walt Disney Co.'s Jodie Foster starrer Flightplan. Rae is repped by Brady, Brennan and Rich.
