Peacock’s latest cop drama shines an unflinching light on a pair of siblings divided by the ongoing strife of the American opioid crisis. Based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore and co-created for television by showrunner Nikki Toscano, Long Bright River tells the story of Mickey (Amanda Seyfried), a police officer who patrols the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, a place hit hard by drugs and homelessness. When a series of murders begins in the area, her sister also turns up missing, throwing her headfirst into unraveling the crime spree.

Here, Toscano opens up about real life research and translating relationships and intentions from book to screen.

Deadline: How did this story find its way to you?

Nikki Toscano: It’s quite simple, really. My agent reached out with the book. And they said that Sony was looking for somebody to co-create it with Liz Moore and showrun the series.

As a Philly native, Brunson never planned to set her series elsewhere. “Abbott” is based on her own elementary school and her mother’s experience as a teacher, and the show’s Philadelphia setting is part of its unforgettable charm.

“Quinta loves Philadelphia, loves it so deeply that she pores over every little detail that is Philly specific in the show, down to what’s in the vending machines in the school,” showrunner Justin Halpern told IndieWire. “She has a deep, deep love for the city, and because of that she wants the show to feel as authentic as possible.”

London’s Raindance Film Festival will present its most expansive program since the pandemic, screening 70 narrative and documentary features June 18–27 at Vue Piccadilly. That marks a 90 percent increase over last year’s roster. The event opens with Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama Heavyweight and concludes with Camilla Guttner’s student-focused drama The Academy.

Festival founder Elliot Grove celebrated the broad selection: “Raindance has built a reputation for championing films that might be overlooked elsewhere. Launching with a British debut about a wildcard boxer feels entirely fitting.”

The star of Peacock police thriller Long Bright River broke out in hit movies like Mean Girls, Mamma Mia! and Jennifer’s Body, but she says she “put limits on myself” until receiving a crucial note from Broadway director Leigh Silverman several years back.

In the eight-part drama, produced by Sony Pictures Television, which dropped on Peacock+ on March 13 and will have its international premiere at TV festival Series Mania in Lille this week, Seyfried plays Mickey, a Philly-raised overachiever who it once seemed was bound to escape her blue-collar roots. Instead, she finds herself a single mom patrolling her own Kensington neighborhood, trying to connect with the addicts and sex workers she encounters every day. One of them is her own sister, Kasey (played by Ashleigh Cummings), who has ended up, literally, on the wrong side of the tracks. When sex workers start turning up dead, and Kasey vanishes, Mickey suspects a serial killer is on the loose and that her sister could be his next victim.

The Peacock limited series Long Bright River, based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore, premiered all eight episodes on March 13 and tells the story of Mickey Fitzpatrick (Amanda Seyfried), a police officer who grew up and serves in Kensington, Philadelphia. With the help of her former partner Truman Dawes (Nicholas Pinnock), she must track down a killer who is targeting vulnerable street women in the neighborhood. Complicating her investigation, she's also searching for one missing street woman in particular: her sister Kacey (Ashleigh Cummings).

Long Bright River season 2 gets a cautious response from creators Liz Moore and Nikki Toscano. An adaptation of Moore’s 2020 novel, the Peacock drama follows police officer Mickey (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried) as she begins investigating murders in Philadelphia, while worrying about the safety of her estranged sister. Along with Seyfried, the cast includes Nicholas Pinnock, Ashleigh Cummings, John Doman, Dash Mihok, and Britne Oldford. With all eight episodes released on March 13, the main mystery and storyline of Long Bright River were seemingly wrapped.

During a recent interview with Variety, Moore and Toscano addressed whether season 2 is possible. Giving a careful update, Moore teased that it was “classified information,” while Toscano added that a decision would not necessarily come from them. However, the co-creator explained that she and Moore would be interested in reuniting with the Long Bright River talent.

Ahearn wouldn't allow Aura to perform a toxicology report, which honestly makes Ahearn look suspicious. When Mickey reveals that she found Kacey, Aura asks how she is, which prompts a flashback to 2016.

Paula called Mickey after Kacey gave birth to Thomas because she isn't doing well. Kacey's still on drugs even though she was pregnant. After the realization in the previous episode that Simon could be the connective tissue of the murders as a consistent figure at the youth center, Long Bright River episode 5 opens with Mickey understanding what Paula said about the perp. Mickey and Truman agree that Simon is a predator, but there's still questions about if he could be capable of being a serial killer. Truman worries this has turned personal for Mickey.

Truman stops by the youth center for an application for afternoon help and asks the officer is Simon still works there. He hasn't worked at this particular youth center in a while, but there are over two dozen in the city. Mickey learns that another sex worker, Emily Morris, was found with a possible connection to the others. This time, it wasn't an insulin overdose but a gunshot.

The crime drama is based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore and centers on police officer Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried) as she dives deep into the deaths of women in area of Philadelphia afflicted by the opioid crisis.

But she's not the first character we meet. Instead the series opens on a nameless woman who kisses her partner before leaving their tent in a city alley and going on a walk. She visits a nearby convenience store to clean herself up and get food, but she enters a vehicle. She's locked in the car and pleads for help.
