Fluer Fortuné’s The Assessment (2024) serves as a compelling companion piece to Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men, with both films set in a near-future world where childbirth has become a rarity. Yet, amid this crisis, their characters cling to the fragile hope of new life. While Cuarón’s vision is rooted in a gritty, war-torn landscape populated by working-class struggles, Fortuné’s film shifts the lens to a more insular perspective—that of a privileged couple living in a secluded, state-sanctioned sanctuary.
Despite the serene setting, The Assessment delivers a sharp critique of societal control, personal autonomy, and the quiet tyranny of privilege. It unfolds as a thoughtful meditation on what it truly means to become a parent in a world governed by surveillance and sterile order. The film isn’t afraid to venture into philosophical territory, raising questions that linger long after the credits roll.

Channel 4’s inaugural digital-original drama arrives with the kind of fanfare that suggests revolution, yet “Beth” feels like a tentative first step rather than a bold leap into television’s future. This 34-minute sci-fi thriller, carved into three digestible YouTube segments while simultaneously airing as a traditional broadcast, embodies the industry’s current identity crisis: caught between chasing younger demographics and serving established narratives about family formation that feel decidedly millennial-focused.
The premise centers on Joe (Nicholas Pinnock) and Molly (Abbey Lee), an affluent London couple whose fertility struggles have become their defining characteristic. After multiple IVF failures and miscarriages, their doctor’s advice to “remove the stress” leads to an unexpected natural conception. When their daughter Imogen arrives bearing no resemblance to her Black father, the story pivots from reproductive drama to something far more speculative.

Peacock’s latest cop drama shines an unflinching light on a pair of siblings divided by the ongoing strife of the American opioid crisis. Based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore and co-created for television by showrunner Nikki Toscano, Long Bright River tells the story of Mickey (Amanda Seyfried), a police officer who patrols the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, a place hit hard by drugs and homelessness. When a series of murders begins in the area, her sister also turns up missing, throwing her headfirst into unraveling the crime spree.
Here, Toscano opens up about real life research and translating relationships and intentions from book to screen.
Deadline: How did this story find its way to you?
Nikki Toscano: It’s quite simple, really. My agent reached out with the book. And they said that Sony was looking for somebody to co-create it with Liz Moore and showrun the series.

On May 29, “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson received the key to the city of Philadelphia.
As a Philly native, Brunson never planned to set her series elsewhere. “Abbott” is based on her own elementary school and her mother’s experience as a teacher, and the show’s Philadelphia setting is part of its unforgettable charm.
“Quinta loves Philadelphia, loves it so deeply that she pores over every little detail that is Philly specific in the show, down to what’s in the vending machines in the school,” showrunner Justin Halpern told IndieWire. “She has a deep, deep love for the city, and because of that she wants the show to feel as authentic as possible.”
TV fans may have noticed that Philadelphia is having a moment; from “Abbott” to the ongoing “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (and their unlikely but seamless crossover) and “Deli Boys” in the comedy...

David Verbeek’s latest film, “The Wolf, the Fox and the Leopard” (2025), is essentially about human survival in today’s world riddled with ecological crises. The climate is rapidly changing its patterns, leading to unprecedented dangers. Yet, the oligarchs are busy taking over the world, and artificial intelligence is threatening humanity’s future. At a time when everything seems dire, it’s natural to look for someone as humanity’s last hope. What if this ‘last hope’ is not a human at all? How would they interpret human nature? And will adapting to the ways of our world secure their future? “The Wolf, the Fox and the Leopard” asks these questions through the eyes of a feral girl (Jessica Reynolds) who returns to the human world by accident.

London’s Raindance Film Festival will present its most expansive program since the pandemic, screening 70 narrative and documentary features June 18–27 at Vue Piccadilly. That marks a 90 percent increase over last year’s roster. The event opens with Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama Heavyweight and concludes with Camilla Guttner’s student-focused drama The Academy.
Festival founder Elliot Grove celebrated the broad selection: “Raindance has built a reputation for championing films that might be overlooked elsewhere. Launching with a British debut about a wildcard boxer feels entirely fitting.”
Opening Night: Heavyweight
Heavyweight follows a rising fighter (Nicholas Pinnock) whose chance in the ring coincides with personal struggles outside it. Co-starring Jason Isaacs and Jordon Bolger, the film had its world premiere at Raindance. Anthony penned the screenplay to explore ambition and sacrifice, shooting on location in UK gyms and community centres.

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta said she had always wanted to make a Marvel movie because “she was a big comic book nerd growing up,” but revealed that the reality of directing the mega-budget 2023 studio film The Marvels was a far different experience than she could have imagined.
Speaking at Dublin’s second annual screenwriting festival Storyhouse, the Little Woods and Candyman director admits that when she came aboard to direct The Marvels she “stepped into a system” and she had to “lean into the process.”
“They had a date, and they were prepping certain things, and you just have to lean into the process hardcore,” she said during a detailed conversation with filmmaker Kate Dolan. “The way they make those films is very different to the way, ideally, I would make a film, so you just have to lean into the process and hope for the best. Amanda Seyfried didn’t ever think she would play a cop.
The star of Peacock police thriller Long Bright River broke out in hit movies like Mean Girls, Mamma Mia! and Jennifer’s Body, but she says she “put limits on myself” until receiving a crucial note from Broadway director Leigh Silverman several years back.
“I never thought that I was going to get the opportunity to play a cop,” she told Deadline, shortly after the launch of Long Bright River and on the eve of its Series Mania competition premiere.
“I think there are certain limits that we all have as actors and I think I put these limits on myself. The industry sees you in a certain way through the years and I saw myself as someone who would not be able to have some kind of authority. I am slight and I was young for so long, until I wasn’t,...

Amanda Seyfried said she went to some “scary, dark places” for her latest role in Long Bright River, playing a beat cop on the mean streets of Philadelphia.
In the eight-part drama, produced by Sony Pictures Television, which dropped on Peacock+ on March 13 and will have its international premiere at TV festival Series Mania in Lille this week, Seyfried plays Mickey, a Philly-raised overachiever who it once seemed was bound to escape her blue-collar roots. Instead, she finds herself a single mom patrolling her own Kensington neighborhood, trying to connect with the addicts and sex workers she encounters every day. One of them is her own sister, Kasey (played by Ashleigh Cummings), who has ended up, literally, on the wrong side of the tracks. When sex workers start turning up dead, and Kasey vanishes, Mickey suspects a serial killer is on the loose and that her sister could be his next victim.

Amanda Seyfried admired her “fearless” character Mickey Fitzpatrick in “Long Bright River”.
“She doesn’t have a good bedside manner and rubs people the wrong way. But she just doesn’t care what they think, which is something I wish I could absorb, because I care too much. And that gets in the way of a lot of situations for me,” she tells Variety.
“The part of Mickey that I love so much is that she’s a slow burn. You find out she’s fucked up a lot. She’s not a perfect person. She’s just fighting her way, like all of us.”
In Peacock’s series, now heading to French festival Series Mania, she plays a Philadelphia police officer, investigating the murder of three women. And fearing that her addict sister, who disappeared a long time ago, might be in danger as well.

The series is based on Liz Moore's best-selling 2020 novel of the same name and was adapted by the writer and Nikki Toscano for television. The compelling story is layered and empathetic, centered around two sisters while addressing the disparity of a Philadelphia community living in poverty, struggling with opioid addiction, and suffering from negligence. Mickey's sister is missing, and the murders force her to relive a traumatic and heartbreaking time in her life, but she's determined more than ever to solve them and find the connection to her sister.

Fleur Fortuné’s near-future-set feature-length directorial debut, The Assessment, prods at current-day anxieties around having children amid a recrudescence of fascism and dress rehearsals for the climate apocalypse. Even as these two forces refuse to recognize each other’s authority, they skip into the future hand in hand.
Owing to their wealth and obedience, Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) live in a coastal modernist villa, insulated from the largely off-screen ravages of a dystopian climate apocalypse by an atmosphere-controlled forcefield. Mia cultivates gourmet algae in a greenhouse of her own design, where she also keeps an orchid that’s all she has left of her mother, who was exiled to the “Old World” for political dissidence. Aaryan is a programmer who, in a nod to Philip K. Dick, designs artificial pets to replace those lost in the “pet cull.”

Long Bright River season 2 gets a cautious response from creators Liz Moore and Nikki Toscano. An adaptation of Moore’s 2020 novel, the Peacock drama follows police officer Mickey (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried) as she begins investigating murders in Philadelphia, while worrying about the safety of her estranged sister. Along with Seyfried, the cast includes Nicholas Pinnock, Ashleigh Cummings, John Doman, Dash Mihok, and Britne Oldford. With all eight episodes released on March 13, the main mystery and storyline of Long Bright River were seemingly wrapped.
During a recent interview with Variety, Moore and Toscano addressed whether season 2 is possible. Giving a careful update, Moore teased that it was “classified information,” while Toscano added that a decision would not necessarily come from them. However, the co-creator explained that she and Moore would be interested in reuniting with the Long Bright River talent.

After the realization in the previous episode that Simon could be the connective tissue of the murders as a consistent figure at the youth center, Long Bright River episode 5 opens with Mickey understanding what Paula said about the perp. Mickey and Truman agree that Simon is a predator, but there's still questions about if he could be capable of being a serial killer. Truman worries this has turned personal for Mickey.
Truman stops by the youth center for an application for afternoon help and asks the officer is Simon still works there. He hasn't worked at this particular youth center in a while, but there are over two dozen in the city. Mickey learns that another sex worker, Emily Morris, was found with a possible connection to the others. This time, it wasn't an insulin overdose but a gunshot.

This post contains spoilers from Long Bright River episode 3 from this point forward.
In the previous episode of Long Bright River, Mickey scoped out the building from Kacey's photo and was held at gunpoint. Episode 3 quickly reveals that Dock McClatchie is the one pointing the gun at her, though it's unclear if Mickey knows that's who he is. He's also looking for Kacey because she took something from him. Dock fires a warning shot and forces Mickey out. Before she leaves, he threatens her with Thomas.
Already tense, Mickey's irked to find Thomas with G-Pop at a bar playing poker. Truman texts her that he has a lead on Dock, but she doesn't inform him of her stressful run-in. Thomas is still sensitive about not spending much time with extended family, which leads to a flashback to 1999 at Mickey's mother's funeral. Their father stands outside the reception, and they watch as G-Pop confronts him.

This post contains spoilers from Long Bright River episode 2 from this point forward.
Long Bright River episode 2, titled "Let Me In," opens where episode 1 left off, with Mickey at Truman's house. After putting Thomas to bed, she apologizes for what role she may have played in his injury. He tells her it's the wrong apology since she never visited him after the incident — until now. That's a long time to ghost your partner.
A flashback to July 2014 shows a happier time between Mickey and Kacey. While Simon's away, they celebrate Kacey's one year chip for sobriety and later talk about their mother. Kacey doesn't remember their mom, which comes as a surprise to Mickey. Their bond as sisters is apparent, which makes their present-day disconnect even sadder.
The next morning at Truman's, she finally explains the situation with Kacey to him, that she's been missing for six weeks. She...

Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Amanda Seyfried returns to the small screen in the new Peacock original limited series Long Bright River. The crime drama is based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore and centers on police officer Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried) as she dives deep into the deaths of women in area of Philadelphia afflicted by the opioid crisis.
But she's not the first character we meet. Instead the series opens on a nameless woman who kisses her partner before leaving their tent in a city alley and going on a walk. She visits a nearby convenience store to clean herself up and get food, but she enters a vehicle. She's locked in the car and pleads for help.
After that fittingly chilling cold open, we meet Mickey as she drops...

The talented Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), the thinking woman’s beauty, joins the hard-working, blue-collar women of crime. “Long Bright River,” the gritty Peacock limited series of eight bingeable episodes, follows in the sensible flats of investigative reporter Amy Adams in “Sharp Objects” and Jodie Foster in “True Detective: Night Country.” Please, don’t ask these women to smile.
Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried), amateur English horn player and Penn dropout, is an unlikely beat cop in the rough Kensington area of Philadelphia where she grew up. It’s a low-income, working-class neighborhood with a strong Irish American community derailed by deindustrialization in the 1960s.
On the Philly streets, women — sex workers and drug addicts — are turning up dead. Bagged and tossed, the predominantly male authorities remain staunchly unbothered. These overdose victims, in their eyes, got what they bargained for, what they deserved. Garbage in, garbage out.
