Walter Hamada
One way to make a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin film
Walter Hamada
In April 2024, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that film producer Walter Hamada and Paramount Pictures would be developing a film based on Idw Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. In the live-action movie realm, the turtles have had varying levels of success.

In the 1990s, the original trilogy started hot, but fell in popularity, drastically so by the time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III came around. Thanks to an explosive popularity due to the 1987 animated series, this was many people’s introduction to the reptilian quartet.

However, aside from animation, the turtles hadn’t been in the flesh, so to speak, for over two decades. Thanks to Michael Bay and a team of directors, screenwriters, and producers, the pizza-loving shellshockers were back. Well, just in 2014 and 2016, as the Turtles’ designs and the plots proved unpopular with certain fans.

Of course, the Turtles have found life in animation.

From ‘Oh, Hi!’ & ‘Diciannove’ To ‘Folktales’ & ‘House On Eden’, Indies Saw A Window This Weekend And Grabbed It – Specialty Preview
Image
It’s a big weekend for smaller indie distributors – or at least not the biggest – as they spotted a weekend with nothing new from A24 or Neon and just one major studio opening in what has, and will be, been a crowded summer.

MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 800-pound gorilla – other studio films “cleared out of the weekend,” says one indie distribution executive. So edgier fare has a better shot. Sony Pictures Classics’ Oh, Hi! and Roadside Attractions’ The Home open on 1,000 screens, IFC’s House on Eden on 600. Magnolia doc Folktales, Oscilloscope’s Diciannove and Greenwich Entertainment’s Shoshana are limited releases, which can always be good counter-programming.

“Often in the summer you are constantly just fighting for screens and looking for whatever weekend you can get the most theaters,” said another exec. Not that it’s a breeze to find space, with tentpole fare...

Diciannove Review: Giovanni Tortorici’s Debut Feature is Full of Style But Lacks a Backbone
Image
Luca Guadagnino, for better or for worse, is an arbiter––and cultural signifier––of taste. Follow his lead and you are assured a sensuous journey, albeit one that never goes too far beneath the surface. In the years since’s Call Me By Your Name, Guadagnino has put his weight behind up-and-coming voices whose films are also aesthetically pleasing and intellectually promising. There’s the Italian director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino and, more notably, the Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili (April). Last year, Giovanni Tortorici, a former assistant director for Guadagnino on the HBO series We Are Who We Are, added his name to this list when Diciannove premiered in the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti sidebar, where it was well-received by critics. A semi-autobiographical coming-of-age picture about a repressed homosexual intellectual under the Tuscan sun? Consider me seated.

Just like Leonardo, its 19-year-old protagonist played by Manfredi Marini, Diciannove is marked by a restless listlessness.

‘Diciannove’ Review: Giovanni Tortorici’s Lucid, Unpredictable Coming-of-Age Story
Image
Despite itself, Giovanni Tortorici’s debut feature, Diciannove (Italian for 19), is a coming-of-age film. Only a coda, which jumps ahead to a year after the main timeline, reveals a significant evolution in Leonardo’s (Manfredi Marini) life following his first year of college: His form of rambunctious rebellion is to needle academia as a conservative reactionary. Tortorici, though, doesn’t concern himself with the grand metamorphosis that the hero of a bildungsroman often underdoes. This is the story of a character who, left to his own indolent devices, hardens in his thinking rather than accelerates in his development.

The 19-year-old Leonardo straddles a generational fault line in 2015. He rues the twilight of millennial youthfulness and the Zoomers supplanting them as the dominant cultural force, yet he also cannot help but embody some of his successors’ defining traits. The character further retreats into outmoded moralism as he advances in his studies,...

Diciannove Review — Dull, Creepy Coming-of-Age Film is an Awful Watch
Image
Luca Guadagnino has produced some of the strongest coming-of-age films of any filmmaker working today. His exploration of complicated characters has created many all-time great films about growing up. The Challengers director gave his seal of approval on Diciannove as a producer, an Italian story about an aimless and weird 19-year-old trying to make his way through college.

Diciannove Review

Manfredi Marini stars as Leonardo, a teenager who leaves his hometown to pursue his studies in economics in London. After growing restless while away from home, he moved around Europe to become a literature major. The film presents this not as a romantic journey of self-discovery, but as a frantic escape from himself. It’s realistic, but not fun.

There’s not much more to the plot than that. Leonardo struggles because he’s constantly distracted by his bad attitude and confused sexual orientation. He meets lots of new people,...

'Den of Thieves 2' Is on Netflix, but 'Everybody Loves Diamonds' Is Better
Image
Life is stranger than fiction. But fiction always has a desire to replay life’s strangest moments. They go hand in hand. This is certainly the case with the Antwerp diamond heist from 2003. More than $100 million in diamonds were stolen from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre in Belgium. Most recently, this daring robbery was revisited in Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. This cinematic take on the real-world event takes a step further and brings the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, as well as the mafia, into the mix. The sequel to the 2018 crime film also did well enough to garner a sequel as well as spinoffs that will take place in different parts of the world. While the excitement is definitely there, interested viewers should know that another feature from two years ago also took a look at “the heist of the century.”

In fact, he has put a price on it!

Benedict Cumberbatch: I’m Not a ‘Typical Movie Star’ Sex Symbol Like Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio

Cumberbatch, whose tenure on BBC series “Sherlock” propelled him to viral thirst fandom, told Variety that he knows he’s not akin to Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of his appearance.

He added, “I worry about myself in the mirror as I age, like every other fucker does.”

And don’t say that Cumberbatch is a celebrity either.

“It’s so derogatory,” he said of the term, “and just lumps anyone famous together. Am I a ‘celebrated’ person?...

While many people around the world were quick to call him irresistible, Cumberbatch himself was a little confused by it. He didn’t see himself as a typical heartthrob, especially when compared to other famous actors.

How did Sherlock turn Benedict Cumberbatch into a s*x symbol?

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the hit TV show Sherlock, never expected to become a s*x symbol in the industry. In 2010, when he...

Sorry, Marvel. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are Set to Rule 2025 With a Groundbreaking Comic
Image
2025 is already shaping up to be an exciting time for fans of comic books and iconic heroes like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the 1980s and 1990s. Fueled by growing nostalgia for that era, comic publishers are pulling out all the stops to satisfy the public’s demand, reviving and reimagining beloved legacy titles from decades past.

Few publishers are better poised to capitalize on nostalgia culture than Disney's Marvel Comics. With a vast library of iconic IPs, including Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, crafted by trailblazing writers and artists, Marvel's influence is ubiquitous. But Idw's latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot by writer Jason Aaron and a variety of artists is challenging Marvel's place at the top of comics.

Custom image by Marcel Green

It's rare to find adult comic book fans – the same enthusiasts driving the genre's nostalgia movement – whose formative years weren't shaped by Marvel in some way.

In a wild BTS story, Leonardo DiCaprio dived headfirst into a frozen lake to save his two chaotic rescue Huskies. Now, DiCaprio’s dogs weren’t just any furry companions. According to director Adam McKay and costar Jonah Hill, they were absolute tornadoes.

So wild, in fact, Hill would text DiCaprio photos of the destruction they caused to the furniture on set. But things took a serious turn when one of the Huskies fell into the frozen lake. DiCaprio didn’t think twice. “And then I went in. I didn’t understand what you do at a frozen lake,” he confessed. Enter Leo, freezing his butt off, doing what any dog dad would do—jumping in to save the day.

Did Kate Winslet Turn Down The Role Of Viola In Shakespeare In Love?
Image
Kate Winslet was almost Viola in Shakespeare In Love (Photo Credit – Instagram/Jio Cinema)

Yes, Kate Winslet passed on the iconic role that went on to win Gwyneth Paltrow an Oscar. Weird, right? Let’s dive into this Hollywood “what if” moment. After Titanic made her an international sensation, Kate was swimming in high-profile offers. Enter Shakespeare in Love. The script was sharp, the cast was stacked, and the role of Viola was proper in her wheelhouse. But nope, Kate wasn’t buying it. Even though she admitted she “got it completely” after reading the script, she still turned it down. What gives?

John Madden, the director, recalled meeting with her and thinking she was all in. “She was ecstatic about it,” he said. But just a week later, Kate was singing a different tune. “I don’t think I can,” she told him. So, Paltrow swooped in, and the rest is history—Oscar,...

10 Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
When someone hears the words "ninja" and "turtles," what usually springs to mind is the silly, comical team of reptilian brothers known worldwide as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These brothers -- Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo -- came to the minds of creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman in 1983. Drawing inspiration from ninja characters they had seen in Frank Miller comics such as Daredevil and Ronin, Laird and Eastman sketched various images of ninja turtles. Soon after the Tmnt comics came out, they became a huge success.

With the success of the comic came the original animated Saturday morning cartoon in 1987, which gave voices to the characters. Likewise, the success of this TV series led to the first live-action movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in 1990, a box office smash hit. Since then, there has been a myriad of Tmnt movies and TV series that each attempted to capture the...

Ken Burns Thinks Leonardo da Vinci Would Be a Filmmaker If He Were Alive Today
Image
Ken Burns achieved a milestone this month with his two-part four-hour “Leonardo da Vinci” documentary: It’s the first time he’s ever made a film about a non-American subject.

In a new interview with NY1 show “The Rush Hour,” Burns talked a bit about how much of a kinship he feels with Leonardo. Despite the artist and scientist living 500 hundred years ago, he’s a startlingly contemporary figure. In fact, Burns thinks he and Leonardo would share a profession if Leonardo was alive and working today.

“The scary thing is, I think he’d be a filmmaker,” Burns said. “You look at the last supper, and you think it’s a frozen moment. It’s not. It’s a frozen six or seven moments. And there seems to be movement implicit in some of the paintings, including ‘The Mona Lisa’ and ‘The Virgin in the Rocks’ and ‘The Virgin...

Did The Brazilian President Claim Leonardo DiCaprio Funded Destructive Amazon Fires?
Image
Here’s why the Brazilian President blamed Leonardo DiCaprio (Photo Credit – Amazon Prime Video)

Imagine this: Leonardo DiCaprio, the eco-warrior of Hollywood, accused of bankrolling fire-raisers in the Amazon. Yes, Leonardo is the guy who gave us The Revenant and pretty much every other environmental PSA you can think of. In a head-scratching twist, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro went live on Facebook in late 2019. He aimed Leo and his deep pockets, bizarrely claiming, “DiCaprio, you’re collaborating with the burning of the Amazon.” I’m just casually tossing out that accusation with zero proof. But why? And what was even happening here?

Let’s rewind. In 2019, the Amazon rainforest was burning unprecedentedly, with smoke thick enough to catch global attention. Since he took office, Bolsonaro, a staunch promoter of “economic development” in the Amazon, had already been facing criticism for surging deforestation numbers. The situation was heating up, and Bolsonaro...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate Review - A Really Hip Roguelite That Does The Boys Proud
Image
The heroes in a half-shell try the roguelite genre on for size in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate. Super Evil Megacorp's new port features enough smart ideas and frisky combat to go toe-to-toe with Tmnt's best games, even while its unimaginative permanent upgrades and currency-grinding endgame could have used a post-mobile facelift. PC players have been walled off from Tmnt: Splintered Fate until now, but the game is ultimately worth the wait, especially for longtime Turtles fans.

Originally releasing as an Apple Arcade exclusive (and eventually appearing on Nintendo Switch earlier this year), action roguelite Tmnt: Splintered Fate finds the foursome fighting their way through the periodic table of street brawler environments - sewers, docks, streets, rooftops - to rescue Splinter from a mysterious unearthly threat. Some excellent comic art, dialogue, and recognizable voices help bring the game's characters to life, delivering a genuine-feeling Tmnt experience that never...

Diciannove ‘Mami’ Movie Review: A Brash, Exhilarating Snapshot of Youthful Imprudence
Giovanni Tortorici
The 19-year-old protagonist of Giovanni Tortorici’s ‘Diciannove’ – Leonardo Gravina, reminded me quite a lot of myself from that age. He has next-to-none self-awareness and a bloated self-esteem. Just out of his adolescence and technically an adult, he considers the world his oyster. Much like Julie from ‘The Worst Person in the World’, he tries different modes of education as if they are tempting dishes on a restaurant menu! Of course, he has no baggage of responsibilities weighing on his shoulders. He can be who he wants – at least he feels like he can.

In Tortorici’s loosely autobiographical film, co-produced by Luca Guadagnino, he looks inward into the chaotic journey he went through to find a sense of mental stability and experience growth. In his film, we meet Leonardo, leaving his hometown of Palermo and stepping into London to study economics. He resides with his older sister and her friend.

Diciannove Review: A Wandering Youth Finds Himself
Image
Diciannove is a 2024 debut film from Italian-American director Giovanni Tortorici. It tells the story of Leonardo, a shy 19-year-old living in Palermo, Sicily. As Leonardo prepares to leave home to study abroad, he feels uncertainty about his future and where he truly belongs. Though he plans to live with his sister in London and study business, something deeper calls to him.

Tortorici takes us inside Leonardo’s mind with experimental filmic techniques that match his protagonist’s restless thoughts. Abrupt cuts and zooms transport us to new places in Leonardo’s journey of self-discovery. Through it all, newcomer Manfredi Marini brings nuanced vulnerability to the role.

Leonardo’s path is anything but straightforward. Business school doesn’t feel right, so he impulsively moves to Siena to study literature instead. Yet connecting with others proves difficult as he marches to his own beat. As strange interests and confusing desires emerge, Leonardo...
