Dirk Gently (2010)
‘Dirk Gently’ Review: Season 2 Premiere Is a Messy ‘Acceleration of Strangeness’
Dirk Gently (2010)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Season 2 premiere of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” titled “Space Rabbit.”]

“How did I forget how annoying you are?” asks Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) in the trailer for BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” It’s a familiar feeling for viewers reentering the world Max Landis adapted from Douglas Adams’ source material because just as with last year, this season is not content to unspool a story quietly, logically, or with any sort of restraint.

The overstuffed episode checks back in with eight returning characters (yes, we’re also counting Rowdy 3 member Vogel and the dog Rapunzel), and introduces at least eight more. Despite that surfeit of players, we have yet to even meet Alan Tudyk, who joins this year as the gun-happy Mr. Priest.

Jean Michel Basquiat
Jay-z Buys Painting By Swizz Beatz
Jean Michel Basquiat
Jay-z proclaimed in Watch The Throne: "Basquiats, Warhols serving as my muses/ My house like a museum."

Recently the hip-hop deity and art aficionado took his well-documented love for Jean-Michel Basquiat to the next level, buying a portrait of the artist entitled "Holy Grail" made by none other than Swizz Beatz for the Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation.

The artwork was inspired by William Coupon's iconic photograph of Basquiat.

The star-studded exchange was documented on Swizz' Instagram with the enthusiastic caption "Art Life!!! I will use proceeds to continue helping kids in need." Basquiat is portrayed in all his eclectic glory atop the hood of a Mercedes Benz.

We have to say we're impressed by the quality of Swizzy's work, not that we're surprised. Beatz previously collaborated with spot-happy Damien Hirst on a series of spin paintings and even expressed plans to open an art gallery of his own.

Radio Battlegrounds
After a challenging 2012, the lines have been drawn and the troops are in position for the 2013 radio year. Colin Delaney looks across the country at the old and new faces and the biggest fights on the cards in the battle for the ratings win.

2012 was a tumultuous year for Australia’s radio industry. Marred by several well-publicised incidents, the reputations and standing of talent, management and key brands in the space took a beating, as did the image of the medium as a whole.

But the stage is now set for the battle of 2013 after the ratings season begins on January 20 and those in the industry Encore spoke to are hopeful the coming 12 months will see a turnaround with a number of new additions to the talent lineup and the return of many industry veterans. Um CEO Mat Baxter believes one show in particular will be a major game changer...

2012 – The year in radio
In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at the year in radio.

2012 begins with 2DayFM shock jock Kyle Sandilands in a continuing sponsorship shit-storm. Jenny Craig is the first to sponsor the Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show after advertisers withdrew from the program in late 2011 following Sandilands’ vitriolic on-air rant at a News.com.au journalist that included calling her a ‘fat slag’. The public response to the weight loss brand’s decision to advertise sees them cancel their ads 24 hours later.

Claire Hooper and Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross start their new partnership on Sydney’s Mix106.5 breakfast show as Jane Hall joins Chrissie Swan on Melbourne’s Mix101.1 breakfast show.

——————————————————————————————————–

The Kyle and Jackie O Show opens the year with a ratings drop from 11.2 per cent to 10.1 per cent. Elsewhere, Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 clings to a market lead ahead of FiveAA.

KFC’s Summer Session radio show presented by Meatless Monday supporter Pat Cash
A chicken-related message on the Meatless Monday Facebook page

Days after appointing former PETA supporter and vegetarian Benji Madden as its spokesman, KFC is to have its sponsored radio show co-hosted by tennis legend Pat Cash who is campaigning for the public not to eat meat on Mondays.

Cash, the former Wimbledon champion, is to co-host the KFC Summer Session drivetime show on Triple M.

The announcement of Cash for the KFC-sponsored show comes shortly after he was named as a celebrity supporter of Meatless Monday – a campaign to persuade people to eat less meat.

From next Monday, Triple M’s KFC Summer Session will air from 4pm to 6pm weekdays with Adam Gilchrist, Mark Bosnich and Tony Squires. Cash will take over from Bosnich in January when the tennis season begins.

The new show was announced on Triple M this morning. It will air in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
