Brussels-based company Best Friend Forever has acquired international rights of Alireza Khatami’s “The Things You Kill.” The film is in post-production.

Khatami is already known for Cannes 2023 Un Certain Regard title “Terrestrial Verses” and “Oblivion Verses,” which was awarded best screenplay in Venice Horizons competition 2017 and won the Fipresci Prize.

Le Pacte will release “The Things You Kill” in France.

In the film, Ali, a university professor, is haunted by the suspicious death of his ailing mother, and coerces his enigmatic gardener to execute a cold-blooded act of vengeance. As long-buried family secrets resurface, the police tighten their noose, and doubts begin eroding his conscience, Ali has no choice but to look into the abyss of his own soul.

The star-studded Turkish cast includes Ekin Koç (“Burning Days”), Erkan Kolçakköstendil, Hazar Ergüçlü (“The Wild Pear Tree”) and Ercan Kesal (“Once Upon a Time in Anatolia”).

On My Block fans will be able to revisit the town of Freeridge with the 2023 spinoff named after the city. Netflix just announced a February 2, 2023 premiere date and revealed Freeridge will be a bit more mystical than On My Block. It will also center around a new core four, played by Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Bryana Salaz (Ines), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cam), and Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi).

Series co-creator and showrunner Lauren Iungerich confirmed both shows rely on mystery to drive the story. Iungerich spoke with Netflix’s Tudum and described how the leads in the spinoff differ from the original series.

A new core four is taking over in Netflix’s “Freeridge,” the spinoff series to the streamer’s coming-of-age dramedy “On My Block.” The show, which just debuted first-look images that you can view below, will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 2.

“Freeridge” is billed as a coming-of-age comedy following sibling rivals Gloria (“Abbott Elementary’s” Keyla Monterroso) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives. The plotline harks back to original series “On My Block,” where an ensemble of four friends hunts for a legendary treasure that threatens to upend their lives.

Netflix’s On My Block spinoff Freeridge is set to premiere on February 2.

Freeridge is an 8-episode, coming-of-age comedy following sibling rivals Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives. Michael Solomon and Zaire Adams also star.

Fans of the original series will see the return of Paula Garcés as Geny Martinez, Eric Gutierrez as Ruben Martinez, Eme Ik0wuakor as Dwayne Turner, and Raushanah Simmons as Fran Turner. Peggy Blow, who played Marisol Martinez aka Abuelita in On My Block, is also listed as cast.

The series is co-created, executive produced and showrun by Lauren Iungerich alongside co-creators and executive producers Jamie Uyeshiro, Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft, and Jamie Dooner.

Before its Sundance Film Festival debut, horror romance My Animal has been picked up by Paramount Worldwide Acquisition Group.

The studio has landed global distribution rights, excluding Canada, with distribution plans still to be determined.

Amandla Stenberg stars in the film, the feature directorial debut from Jacqueline Castel, alongside Bobbi Salvör Menuez (I Love Dick, Under the Silver Lake). Set in a small northern town, the story follows Heather, an outcast teenage hockey goalie (Menuez), who falls for the town’s newcomer (Stenberg), an alluring but tormented figure skater. As a teenager in New York City in the early 1970s, Nuñez and his mother were out shopping one day when they were stopped by the New York Daily News’ Inquiring Photographer columnist. He asked Nuñez what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Production is currently underway in Sudbury, Canada. Sherlock and Doctor Who director among filmmakers with projects at Amsterdam forum which is a partnership between the Cannes Marché and Montreal’s Fantasia.

A total of 12 projects will participate in the inaugural Frontières Finance & Packaging Forum, set to take place February 16-18 in Amsterdam.

Initiated as part of the recent partnership between Fantasia International Film Festival and the Cannes Marché du Film, the event is an offshot of the Frontières International Co-Production Market (which takes place at Montreal’s Fantasia festival in July).

The forum will see industry experts assessing the dozen genre projects from a packaging perspective, analysing finance, marketing and distribution strategies.

Among the selected projects is a feature from Sherlock and Doctor Who director Rachel Talalay, House Of Stairs, and works from producers including Jonathan Bronfman (The Witch), Katie Holly (Love And Friendship) and Phyllis Laing (The Haunting In Connecticut).
