Daily Actorle Solution for Today
Image
It has been a lifelong dream of mine to once enter a cafe, sit down, and just start solving daily puzzles impromptu to assert dominance. And while there is a long way to go before this dream is ever fulfilled, thanks to my social anxiety, maybe you can try out my favorite set of daily puzzles of them all, Actorle.

Actorle.com blends Hollywood with traditional puzzles so well that I find it to be deeply satisfying to flex those film knowledge muscles after figuring out all the solutions. August 1’s lineup brought its fair share of head-scratchers, so here’s a full breakdown of all the answers.

Actorle Solution for Today The answer for Actorle on August 1 is Leslie Nielsen | Credit Actorle/ Fandomwire

More often than not, you will come across some of the most legendary actors making an appearance on Actorle, which makes me believe that this daily...

The Western Flop Vince Vaughn & Billy Bob Thornton Would Probably Like You To Forget About
Image
Ever since Taylor Sheridan convinced Billy Bob Thornton to star in his successful new series, "Landman," we've been enjoying somewhat of a Thornton renaissance. But as much as the Paramount show reminds us of the actor's talents, it also reminds us of his past missteps. Thornton's worst movie is a crime thriller with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, and is the only film in the man's filmography to have earned such a dismal rating from the Tomatometer. But he's got plenty of other stinkers that came close, including 2004's "The Alamo," which was one of the biggest box office flops of all time and made just $23.9 million on a $92 million budget. Then, there's "South of Heaven, West of Hell," which sort of feels like a film in which Thornton was obliged to appear but wasn't necessarily all that happy about it.

Nor should he have been. This 2000 western came from country singer-songwriter Dwight Yoakam,...

Image
Quentin Tarantino has directed many feature films which have been widely acclaimed, and fans will often have their own particular favorites. Superman helmer James Gunn is a Tarantino fan, and he has shared his own pick for his favorite film.

Per Konbini, Gunn addressed Tarantino films in a new video interview. He brought up 1997's Jackie Brown, written and directed by Tarantino, sharing that it's his personal favorite. While Gunn noted that he also really enjoys Pulp Fiction, he gives Jackie Brown the edge, as he feels that it's a "perfect" film. He also revealed how he loves the movie so much that he still watches it regularly.

"Jackie Brown is the best Quentin Tarantino film," Gunn said. "At least, it's my favorite film. I don't know if there are 'bests' of anything, but it's my favorite Quentin Tarantino film. I watch it at least once a year, and really...

Betty White's Cult Classic Creature Feature Is Quietly Dominating Streaming 26 Years Later
Image

Per FlixPatrol, Lake Placid is now the No. 7 most-streamed movie on AMC+ as of July 13. The movie from director Steve Miner and writer David E. Kelley is up from the No. 10 spot, which it held on July 5. The movie is ahead of Dark Winds, The Last Anniversary, and Ash, which hold the No. 8, 9, and 10 spots, respectively.

Betty White's Underrated Horror 'Lake Placid' Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Long after the late Betty White was a cheesecake-loving golden girl from St. Olaf, she played against type to star in the one and only horror movie of her career as a foul-mouthed widow that stole the show. Chewing up every scene she was in with a string of profanities that would make a sailor blush, her character of Mrs. Delores Bickerman in Lake Placid was from the sweet and innocent Rose Nylund seen in her classic sitcom, and served to further endear White in the hearts of fans. Now, 26 years after its premiere, the film continues to be a crowd-pleaser on streaming.

Also starring the likes of Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson, and Oliver Platt, Lake Placid is a tremendously underrated creature feature directed by Steve Miner that focuses on a giant crocodile terrorizing the fictional location of Black Lake, Maine, and the dysfunctional group of police and...

Guillermo del Toro Praises Overlooked and Free to Watch Quentin Tarantino Movie as “One of my favorites”

It’s quite the occasion when we get to spotlight one Oscar-winning filmmaker championing the work of another. And that’s precisely what we have in store for you here today. The Godfather III Is a Secret Masterpiece If You Watch the Right Version (& It Has a New Streaming Home)
Image
One of the most underrated (and rarely screened) Godfatherfilms has a new streaming home.

Paramount+ has just given a critically underrated chapter of The Godfather a new streaming home. As of now, The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is available for streaming on Paramount+.

The final entry in director Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy, The Godfather Part III premiered in 1990 to some particularly scathing reviews from critics. Whereas the previous two films were hailed as some of the greatest pieces of cinema of all time, The Godfather Part III was met with widespread derision as a stand-alone feature largely unconnected to the series' overarching narrative. That being said, The Godfather Part III was also criticized for being unable to truly stand on its own without audiences already being intimately familiar with the preceding films.

Despite these criticisms, The Godfather Part III was still a major success at the box office.

Keanu Reeves Seeks Peace in 4K Restoration Trailer for Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha
Image
As Keanu Reeves plans a reunion with Sandra Bullock, it’s an opportune time to revisit one of his early career gems. Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1993 drama Little Buddha, starring the actor as Siddhartha, has been restored in 4K by Cinecitta from the separation masters under the supervision of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. With a theatrical run beginning on May 9 in NYC at IFC Center, and May 16 in LA at Laemmle Glendale, with a national expansion to select cities to follow, Kino Lorber has now unveiled the new trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: “Drawing on Buddhist history to weave a metaphor about the tragedy of Tibetans in exile, Little Buddha is Bernardo Bertolucci’s stunning follow-up to The Sheltering Sky. Popular Movies You Didn’t Know Are Actually Foreign Movie Remakes
Image
Hollywood might be the world’s largest film industry, but even the entertainment powerhouse has drawn ideas from international films. While remakes have always existed, most cinema buffs remain ignorant that some of their beloved Hollywood blockbusters owe their origins to overseas classics.

The rise of remakes in Hollywood is no coincidence—studios often lean toward stories that have already proven successful. But in doing so, the originals sometimes get overshadowed. Here’s a look at ten Hollywood hits that were actually inspired by international films, proving that great storytelling transcends borders.

One of Quentin Tarantino’s Most Iconic and Underseen Movies Is Now Streaming for Free!
Image
Pam Grier is universally recognized as the first female action movie hero. Grier is a trailblazer and an icon. It’s no wonder Quentin Tarantino wanted to feature her as the titular character in his 1997 exploitation throwback Jackie Brown.

Jackie Brown is an iconic effort and peak Tarantino. Though it was somewhat underrated upon release, I think people are coming to recognize just how effective it really is.

In addition to directing, Tarantino also wrote the script for the film. He adapted the screenplay for Jackie Brown from the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. Rum Punch is far from the only one of Leonard’s novels adapted for the screen. Celebrated director Steven Soderbergh previously adapted his novel Out of Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez playing the lead roles.

In addition to Grier, Jackie Brown stars Robert Forster, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro.

'Single White Female's Jenna Ortega Casting Gets Backlash Online
Image
Social media is a very predictable place to visit, and there are often movie announcements that really don’t need anyone to check what reaction they are receiving in the world of keyboard warriors and overly opinionated commentators. The news that ‘90s thriller Single White Female is being remade with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Bones and All’s Taylor Russell in talks to lead. With a Latinx actress and an actress of Jamaican descent in line to headline the feature, social media obviously is going to point out the reason why the idea of this being a remake has a flaw that is hard to ignore these days when race is still one of the first things anyone talks about.

Single White Female was originally released in 1992, during the peak era for erotic psychological thrillers such as Basic Instinctand Fatal Attraction, and starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Image
Jenna Ortega has had a series of interesting roles, but she found international fame with the role of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix Addams Family spin-off Wednesday. The series, as well as other horror roles, led to her becoming one of the most beloved contemporary scream queens.

With roles in films like 2022's Scream, X, Studios 666, and American Carnage, the actress has proven her skills in the horror genre. However, she's not ready to make a switch to a different genre just yet. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Ortega is reportedly in negotiations to star in the remake of 1992's Single White Females. '90s Cult Psychological Thriller Is Getting A Remake With Jenna Ortega In Talks To Star
Image
Jenna Ortega is now one of the biggest stars of her generation. A former Disney Channel kid, the 22-year-old has been in the industry for over a decade. Smaller film roles such as X and The Fallout brought her more attention, but it was her titular role in the Netflix series Wednesday that catapulted her popularity. That performance earned her critical acclaim, including an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. She would continue her work with prolific director Tim Burton in last year's sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Since taking on Wednesday, it seems like new parts for Ortega are constantly being announced. She played opposite Martin Freeman in the controversial film Miller's Girl, and is about to be in A24's Death of a Unicorn. In addition to Wednesday season 2, Ortega has multiple upcoming parts this year, including Hurry Up Tomorrow and Klara and the Sun. Now, it has just...

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in Talks to Star in ‘Single White Female’ Redo
Image
Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are in talks to star in a new take on the 1992 film “Single White Female,” TheWrap has learned. The thriller is set up at Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures and Sony.

“Single White Female” stars Bridget Fonda as a woman who rents an apartment after a breakup, only to reunite with her ex-boyfriend. But upon reconciliation, her tenant — played by Jennifer Jason Leigh — starts to exhibit odd behavior.

It’s unclear which actress would be playing which role in the new film.

Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the film was based on the John Lutz book “Swf Seeks Same.” The movie became something of a cultural touchstone as the phrase “Single White Female” entered the lexicon as short-hand for a woman gone off the rails.

Ortega is coming off a key role in last year’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and reprises the title role in Netflix’s “Wednesday” Season 2 later this year.

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in Talks to Lead ‘Single White Female’ Remake
Image
Released in 1992, the thriller Single White Female is getting a modern day update, with Variety reporting this week that Jenna Ortega (Death of a Unicorn) and Taylor Russell (Bones and All) are in talks to lead the new cast. It’s a scoop first reported by Jeff Sneider.

Variety details, “Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures are reviving the intra-apartment friction with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in negotiations to star in a remake.”

The original erotic thriller was directed by Barbet Schroeder, with Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh starring. In the 1992 film, “After an unfaithful fiancé leaves her suddenly single, Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) advertises for a roommate to share her spacious apartment. But when the introverted Hedra (Jennifer Jason Leigh) moves in, she doesn’t just take over Allie’s spare bedroom. She takes over her clothes, her boyfriend … and her identity.”

Jenna Ortega, Taylor Russell to star in Single White Female reboot
Image
Last week, Taylor Russell (Bones and All) signed on to co-star in the Amazon MGM reboot of The Thomas Crown Affair, a project that Michael B. Jordan has been attached to for nine years. Now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has heard that Russell is in talks to star in another reboot that has been in the works for years, an update of the 1992 thriller Single White Female. Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) is also reportedly in talks to star in the film, which is set up at Sony and 3000 Pictures. (Update: Variety has now confirmed Sneider’s report.)

As Sneider notes, “Obviously, the title would likely change, as Ortega and Russell are women of color, and neither identifies as white.” Maybe they’ll just drop the middle out and call it Single Female.

Directed by Barbet Schroeder from a screenplay by Don Roos, the ’92 film was based on...

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in Talks for ‘Single White Female’ Remake
Image
Be careful who you add to your lease.

That’s the takeaway from 1992’s psychosexual thriller “Single White Female,” a classic of squirmy suspense that featured Bridget Fonda as a freshly single Manhattan-ite who has the misfortune of picking a clingy and awkward woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to be her roommate while she recovers from her breakup. But because Hollywood loves nothing more than putting a fresh coat of paint of the cult classics, Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures are reviving the intra-apartment friction with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in negotiations to star in a remake. No word on who will direct the film — the original was directed by Barbet Schroeder of “Reversal of Fortune” fame.

Taylor Russell, Jenna Ortega in Talks for ‘Single White Female’ Remake
Image
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell (Bones and All) are in negotiations to star in a remake of Single White Female, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures, which has a deal with Sony, is looking to remake 1992 horror drama that starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The feature was directed by Barbet Schroeder and was based on John Lutz’s 1990 novel Swf Seeks Same. Lutz co-wrote the adaptation with Don Roos.

Both Russell and Ortega will star in the remake and produce. Sony offered no comment on the project. The Insneider first reported the news.

In the original, Fonda played Allison, a woman who takes in Hedra (Leigh) as a roommate, only to bring into her Upper West Side flat a terrifying stalker worthy of a suspense thriller. Sony’s Columbia Pictures distributed Single White Female, which was made for $16 million and grossed $48 million domestically.

Jenna Ortega at an event for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
Sony’s 3000 Pictures label is reportedly putting together a new Single White Female film – Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell will star.

While the title might get an update, 1992’s Single White Female is reportedly getting the remake treatment at Sony’s 3000 Pictures Label. According to The InSneider, the psychological thriller has been plucked from the vaults and is being redeveloped as a project for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Jenna Ortega and Bones And All's Taylor Russell.

The original film hails from 1992, one of Hollywood’s greatest decades for thrillers. Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the film starred Bridget Fonda as a New York software designer who puts out an ad for a female roommate. After accepting a young woman played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, things start to go sideways when her new acquaintance begins to exhibit some rather disturbing behaviour.

The film was a commercial success at the time, earning $84.1 million from a $16 million budget.

Why Rene Russo Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
When a Hollywood actor is big and making lots of movies, it kind of feels like they'll stick around forever. There are plenty who do, but so often a familiar face will enjoy a hot streak before vanishing from the limelight. Back in the '90s we had a number of such actors. Alicia Silverstone, Meg Ryan, and Bridget Fonda all hit their peak during the decade and became household names thanks to their hits. And then they were gone, either suffering from a string of poor choices (Silverstone), taking a break from acting (Ryan), or retiring altogether (Fonda). Another Hollywood star who enjoyed her heyday in the '90s before vacating our multiplexes was Rene Russo. But why exactly did she disappear from Hollywood?

Russo was one of several models who crossed over into acting during the '90s. Some made a big splash in their breakthrough roles, like...

27 Years Later, I Still Can’t Get Over Pam Grier’s Loss at 1998 Oscars
Image
Quentin Tarantino followed his one pattern from Pulp Fiction in his 1997 film Jackie Brown and it was to cast a fallen actor in the lead role. While he picked John Travolta in the former film, it was Pam Grier’s turn in Jackie Brown. At that point, she didn’t have a major role since doing the Blaxploitation films in the ’70s like Foxy Brown and Coffy.

Grier delivered a once-in-a-lifetime performance as the lead character in the film. She outperformed every single one of her co-stars and that’s telling because her co-stars were the late Robert Forster, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, and Michael Keaton.

Sadly, this performance was overlooked by the Academy at the 70th Oscars in 1998. Grier was a fan-favorite to win the Best Actress Award which made her snub from the nominations infuriating for movie-goers.

I Don't Care What You Say, This Is the Best Performance in a Quentin Tarantino Movie
Image
What happens when you take away the gratuitous violence, flagrant obscenities, bloody climaxes, and postmodern glamor in a Quentin Tarantinofilm? On the surface, the answer would be a Tarantino movie without his personal touch, a boring one, for that matter. However, when Tarantino toned down his well-defined tropes and formalist flair for his third feature, Jackie Brown, critics and audiences were muted, longing for more punchy dialogue and Mexican standoffs. Today, his 1997 crime drama, a riff on the blaxploitation starring the genre's queen, Pam Grier, is recognized as one of his canonically great films, perhaps his most mature and nuanced outing as a writer-director. Among its stellar ensemble cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda, and Robert De Niro, it is Robert Forsteras weathered bail bondsman Max Cherry who steals the show playing an avatar of the director and gives the finest performance in any Tarantino picture.

Living With ‘The Occupant’ – Reflecting on Joe Dante’s “Night Visions” Episode
Image
The summer of 2001 was a rather dry season for the horror genre, at least on the big screen. So, insatiable fans such as myself had to look elsewhere to satisfy their cravings; the straight-to-video sector was always a fun gamble, and the growing ubiquity of DVDs had led to the re-release of many classic and cult horrors. Yet during the summer in question, it was on television where I felt the most indulged. Hiding in plain sight on Fox’s schedule was the all but forgotten Night Visions, which has since become one of my favorite ever anthology series.

Night Visions was a fortuitous find that I never would have discovered had I not been channel-surfing. Usually my summers at home entailed catching up with favorite shows via reruns, or less often, giving one of these seasonal slot fillers a chance. Choosing the second option came with the certain risk...

Jet Li and Bridget Fonda Kung-Fu Classic 'Kiss of the Dragon' is Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Streaming platforms have a habit of reviving long forgotten or hardly spoken about movies from the past, and that is true of the 2001 Kung-Fu action movie Kiss of the Dragon entering the Top 10 on Tubi after landing on the platform. Starring Jet Li, in what some regard as his best English-speaking movie, the film did not score highly with critics, but like many action movies, it delivers some intense and crowd-pleasing fights that are enough to make it worth a watch for die-hard fans of the genre.

Kiss of the Dragon was written and produced by director Luc Besson, who also helmed The Fifth Element and Scarlett Johansson action movie Lucy, and, along with Li, starred Bridget Fonda, Burt Kwouk, and Tchéky Karyo. The synopsis of the movie reads:

“Jet Li plays Liu Jiuan, China's top government agent, who arrives in Paris from Shanghai to carry out a sensitive, top-secret mission.

Friends Is Strangely Similar To This 79% Rt Rom-Com From 1992 (& Was Almost Sued)
Image
Friends arrived in the 1990s to change the sitcom genre and has an incomparable legacy, but it was almost sued due to how similar it is to a 1992 rom-com with 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1990s is home to some of the most memorable and successful sitcoms, all of them offering something unique and fun. Friends premiered on NBC in 1994 and became one of the most successful TV shows ever, running for a total of 10 seasons and ending in 2004. Friends broke various records and continues to be regarded as one of the greatest TV shows ever made.

The concept of Friends is simple, but was very effective as it deeply connected with the audience: six friends with different personalities, goals, and backgrounds navigate adulthood together. Throughout 10 seasons, Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), and Ross (David Schwimmer) won the audience over with...

Image
The vibes on your media shelves are about to get very cool, as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and Jackie Brown will all receive 4K Ultra HD SteelBook releases on January 21st, 2025.

The third and “fourth” films made by Tarantino represent the director truly coming into his stride as an auteur. Jackie Brown, adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch, featured Pam Grier as a flight attendant drawn into a criminal enterprise. It was a career-revitalizing role for Grier, alongside an ensemble cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro.

The Kill Bill saga featured Tarantino paying homage to some of his favorite genres, including martial arts movies, blaxploitation, spaghetti westerns, and more. Uma Thurman stars as The Bride (aka Beatrix Kiddo), a woman out for revenge after losing everything on her wedding day. The two-volume epic also starred Lucy Liu,...

The Godfather Part III is Luca Guadagnino’s go-to movie for Christmas viewing
Image
The Godfather Part III, the final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather trilogy, was given a wide theatrical release on December 25, 1990 – and as far as director Luca Guadagnino is concerned, that release date was the perfect choice for the film, as it happens to be his go-to choice for Christmas viewing.

When IndieWire asked Guadagnino what he likes to watch over the holidays, he replied, “[The Godfather Part III] is the best of the three for me. Part II is too perfect and The Godfather is too legendary. But Part III has the ambition of a man who did everything and the fragility of the man who is going toward this older part of his work and his life. And it’s full of this longing melancholy. The scene where Diane Keaton listens to her son sing at the party in the villa, where she wanders in her...

Robin Williams’ Panned ‘90s Comedy-Drama Is a “Masterpiece,” According to Luca Guadagnino
Image
One of the most panned movies in the repertoire of the late, great Robin Williams has now been given a new appraisal by Academy Award nominee and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino. In an interview with Sight and Sound, the filmmaker jumped to the defense of Williams and director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1996 coming-of-age comedy-drama, Jack, which finds Williams playing a young boy who, due to a rare genetic condition, looks like a man in his mid-40s.

Perfectly suited to Williams’ unstoppable, infectious energy, and despite a performance that is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, Jack was savaged by critics upon release. The movie stands at just 17% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with legendary film critic Rogert Ebert awarding Jack just 1 and a half stars and asking “Who was this movie made for?” Guadagnino, however, declares that Jack is nothing less than a masterpiece.

“Coppola’s films that...
