Predator 2 (1990)
Predator 2 nearly starred Steven Seagal instead of Danny Glover
Predator 2 (1990)
Predator 2 is a movie that we love here at JoBlo (watch this video above to see just how much). One of the reasons it works is Danny Glover, who serves as an interesting counterpoint to the brawn shown by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original. But it turns out that he wasn’t the first choice to star in the sequel. Rather, it was none other than Steven Seagal who, in 1990, briefly left his home studio, Warner Bros, to make an action flick for 20th Century Fox.

In the end, that movie was Marked for Death, which is maybe his best non-Under Siege film, but he came close to starring in the higher-profile Predator sequel helmed by Stephen Hopkins (Patrick Swayze was also a possibility). In an interview with Howard Gorman of Scream Magazine, the director dug into how this almost happened. You can watch the full chat Here, but...

Janet Nelson Berger, Casting Director on Prestige TV Programs, Dies at 87
Image
Janet Nelson Berger, who began her career as a secretary at CBS in the mid-1950s before rising to become a production assistant and casting director in an era when few women held managerial roles in network television, has died. She was 87.

Berger died July 22 at her home in Los Angeles of pneumonia and complications from a stroke, her husband, Emmy-winning producer Robert “Buzz” Berger, said.

Janet Berger worked often for producer Herbert Brodkin, first at CBS and later at his independent company, Plautus Productions.

She contributed to 19 episodes of the acclaimed CBS anthology program Playhouse 90 — including a live, color adaptation by George Balanchine of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in 1958 — and to a 1959 production of Hamlet for CBS’ DuPont Show of the Month. (Both were directed by Ralph Nelson.)

Later, she contributed to such socially conscious 1960s drama series as The Defenders, The Doctors and the Nurses and For the People.

Charlie Sheen Starred in One of Clint Eastwood’s Worst Movies That Almost Tried to Be The Naked Gun
Image
Clint Eastwood almost ran his career, along with that of Charlie Sheen, into the ground with a film titled The Rookie that neither flaunted his macho, gunslinger arc as an actor nor touted his Oscar-winning potential as a director.

In the 1980s, Clint Eastwood found it difficult to park his talents in an industry that was, on one hand, filled with big franchise sequels (T2: Judgment Day and Indiana Jones 3) and, on the other, sci-fi blockbusters (E.T. and Blade Runner). Consequently, he stepped into the ’90s with a buddy-cop flick that was supposed to be easy enough to impress the audience.

Instead, The Rookie has been branded as one of the worst Eastwood movies and an insult to his long-standing career as an auteur and award-winning filmmaker /Film].

Mel Gibson’s $952M Action Epic Streams Free Starting August 1
Image
The ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, a cornerstone of action cinema, is making a big move. Starting August 1, 2025, all four movies will be available to stream for free on Tubi. This marks a rare moment when the entire franchise, starring Mel Gibson as the wild Martin Riggs and Danny Glover as the steady Roger Murtaugh, lands on one platform together.

The first film, released in 1987, kicked off the buddy-cop genre with a bang. Directed by Richard Donner and written by Shane Black, it follows Riggs, a grieving ex-Special Forces cop, and Murtaugh, a family man nearing retirement, as they tackle a drug-smuggling ring. Their clashing styles—Riggs’ reckless energy versus Murtaugh’s cautious wisdom—sparked iconic chemistry that carried the series.

‘Lethal Weapon 2’ in 1989 upped the stakes with Joe Pesci joining as the fast-talking Leo Getz. The trio takes on South African smugglers, blending high-octane chases with sharp humor. The 1992 sequel,...

Harrison Ford Candidly Reflects On His Only Oscar-Nominated Role After A Recent Channel Surfing
Image
Harrison Ford, widely revered as a cinematic treasure, has enjoyed a career spanning over seven decades, earning recognition as one of the world's highest-grossing actors. His career began in earnest with modest appearances in George Lucas' American Graffiti (1973) and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974), hinting at his future promise.

Ford's breakthrough came with his iconic portrayal of Han Solo in Star Wars, a character he embodied across five installments over 40 years. His legacy was further solidified through his role as adventurer Indiana Jones, along with memorable turns as the brooding replicant-hunter Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, and Jack Ryan in political thrillers of the early 1990s.

These performances cemented Ford's image as a rugged, charismatic action star and one of Hollywood's most commercially reliable leading men from the late 1970s to the 2000s. Despite numerous accolades, including multiple Golden Globe and SAG nominations, Ford has only received a...

Mel Gibson's $952M Action Franchise Will Be Available To Stream For Free August 1
Image
An iconic Mel Gibson action franchise is finding a new streaming home soon. While Gibson was born in New York state, his family moved to Australia when he was 12, and that is where he got his start as an actor. Some of his first major projects were Australian, including the 1981 war drama Gallipoli and the first three Mad Max movies.

Collectively, Mel Gibson movies featuring him as an actor have grossed more than $4.7 billion worldwide. Some of his biggest titles are M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi horror outing Signs (which grossed $408.2 million against a reported budget of $72 million) and the Nancy Meyers romantic comedy What Women Want ($374.1 million against $70 million).

Predator | Dan Trachtenberg will “cook up stuff” for original star Arnold Schwarzenegger
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger has made somewhat of a return to the Predator franchise and Dan Trachtenberg has more planned.

Predator is making a major return this year, and it’s mostly thanks to Dan Trachtenberg. After the director helmed 2022’s Prey, he has pretty much single-handedly been responsible for the killer’s comeback, with two films about the creature either out or on the way in 2025. And there’s now another franchise comeback in the cards.

As reported by Deadline, Trachtenberg took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to chat all things Predator, especially the upcoming Predator: Badlands. The director said he recently had breakfast with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the star of the original Predator, and was planning to “cook up stuff” for the actor in the franchise.

In fact, he’s already started.

If you’ve already watched Predator: Killer Of Killers, Tractenberg’s animated film on Disney+, you might want...

‘Predator: Badlands’ Director Plans To “Cook Up Stuff” For Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Franchise Return After Meeting — Sdcc
Image
Following the animated return of Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s Dutch to the Predator franchise, the actor could soon reprise the role in a live-action capacity.

During Friday’s Predator: Badlands panel at Comic-Con, director Dan Trachtenberg teased the Hall H audience that he’s planning to “cook up stuff for that guy” after a recent breakfast meeting with the Golden Globe-winning actor and former governor of California.

Schwarzenegger starred in the original John McTiernan-helmed Predator (1987) as Major Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer, who encounters the titular extraterrestrial with his paramilitary team during a rescue mission in a Central American rainforest.

Although the franchise has expanded to nine movies over the years—including two crossovers with the Alien franchise and the upcoming Badlands, premiering Nov. 7 in theaters—Schwarzenegger has yet to reprise his role.

Following the release last month of the franchise’s first animated installment, Predator: Killer of Killers, Trachtenberg debuted an...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Makes Long-Awaited Predator Return In New Killer Of Killers Extended Ending
Image
Predator: Killer of Killers is an animated anthology movie that introduces Ursa, Kenji, and Torres, three warriors who hail from three distinct moments in history. Ursa is a Viking, Kenji is a ninja in feudal Japan, and Torres is a World War II pilot.

After each of them survives encounters with the Yautja, we learn that they were taken from Earth and placed in suspended animation by the alien warriors. They're woken up by the "Grendel King," the apparent leader of the Predators, who forces them to do battle before he faces the victor.

With Predator: Killer of Killers, filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg finally explained why the Yautja go on these hunts. Whether it's to track humans or their fellow aliens, the endgame seems to be testing the species they consider beneath them and then battling those they deem worthy in the name of honour and entertainment.

In the movie's closing moments,...

Real Reason Why Arnold Schwarzenegger Refused Predator Sequel Before Killer of Killers Return
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger found worldwide fame when he portrayed Dutch in the 1987 film Predator. However, the actor did not return for a sequel when it was made in 1990. During a Q&a session in 2015(via THR), Schwarzenegger was asked about his thoughts on the Predator franchise (which wasn’t doing too well before Dan Trachtenberg took over things). The actor heavily criticized the franchise and lamented how studios made sequels just for the money.

The sad story is that sometimes studios do a great job with creating sequels, and sometimes they really screw it up bad, and it all has to do with greed. They sometimes want to do it really cheap and make as much money as possible, so they don’t hire the right cast or the right director.

However, another side to this story was revealed in an interview with Collider when producer John Davis revealed that the...

Rewatch Predator: Killer Of Killers & You’ll Spot A New Ending That Includes Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch
Image
Today might be a good day to rewatch Disney+ and Hulu’s Predator: Killer of Killers. And you’ll want to stick around after the credits, too. At San Diego Comic-Con, filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg revealed that a new cut of the animated Hulu movie dropped with an epilogue that has Predator fans losing their minds. Shown during the Predator: Badlands panel at Hall H, the scene gives us a quick but jaw-dropping look at some familiar faces. In the extended cut of Killer of Killers, the Predator warriors are seen hauling floating human coffins, and inside them is none other than Amber Midthunder’s Naru (Prey), Danny Glover’s Lt. Mike Harrigan (Predator 2), and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch, the original jungle survivor from the 1987 classic. Trachtenberg even joked about how surreal it was getting Schwarzenegger’s blessing to use his likeness, saying he had breakfast with the action icon.

The Predator Series' Most Famous Characters Finally Return In New Killer of Killers Cut

It's been announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Predator: Killer of Killers is getting a new cut, and it's bringing back the franchise's most iconic characters. Co-directed by Dan Trachtenberg and Joshua Wassung, the first animated installment in the Predator franchise hit Hulu on June 6.

The film takes something of an anthology approach, following various warriors across history taking on a Yautja in combat, including a Samurai and a fighter pilot. ScreenRant's own Predator: Killer of Killer review notwithstanding, the response to the original cut of the movie was overwhelmingly positive.

Now, there's confirmed to be a new cut coming, as it's confirmed Sdcc 2025's Predator: Badlands panel, where ScreenRant is in attendance, that a new version of Predator: Killer of Killers is releasing on Hulu today at 7:00pm Pst. The opening scene of Predator 2 is awesome!
Image
The opening of a movie can make or break it. Too fast or show too much and the rest of the movie will struggle to match it. Too slow or not have a hook in the audience and you lose them permanently before the really good stuff hits. A sequel should have an easier time with it because when released theatrically anyway, it should have a bigger budget and know what the first movie did in the first place to be successful let alone be able to mimic some of the better scenes. One of the best to ever do it is a shocking choice, but the first 16 minutes of Stephen Hopkins Predator 2 are some of the best and most draw you in 16 minutes you’ll find. While the movie wasn’t nearly the smash success that its predecessor was with box office, critical reception, or even the fanbase for a while,...

Joaquin Phoenix, 50, Thoroughly Regrets How He Promoted This 53% Rotten Tomatoes Movie — And No, It's Not 'Joker 2'
Image
Joaquin Phoenix has delivered several Oscar-worthy performances in his career, but there was one that almost wrecked it all. During an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbertlast week, the actor talked about his decision to star in I'm Still Here, a mockumentary directed by Casey Affleck (Light of My Life) in 2010. While promoting the comedy movie, Phoenix chose to stay in character during his participation on the David Letterman show. It went terribly wrong.

During the infamous interview, Phoenix announced to a confused audience that he was "retiring from acting" to pursue a hip-hop career as a rabbi. What nobody knew at the time was that it was a hoax to promote I'm Still Here, which is a critique of fame. Looking back on it, Phoenix told Colbert that he could see that it wasn't working, but he "had to keep going" in order not to break character.

Embark on a journey to Silverado with a new 4K Blu-ray for the film’s 40th Anniversary
Image
Blu-ray.com has reported on Sony’s newest physical media release for the 1985 western Silverado. The Lawrence Kasdan film is packed with an all-star cast that includes Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Fahey, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt & Brian Dennehy. The movie will come in a Blu-ray/4K Blu-ray combo pack and is scheduled to be available on October 7.

Our Eic, Chris Bumbray, raved about the film in a retrospective column and video, in which he stated, “Silverado is so much fun that it’s insane to think that the movie never spawned a western franchise that would have sustained a whole series of films. Kasdan should still be making Silverado adventures thirty years later. For one thing, this was Kasdan in his prime, so the writing and craftsmanship is right-on.”

The description reads,

“This spirited Western stars Academy Award®-winner Kevin Kline,...

Mel Gibson’s Free-Streaming Underrated Crime Gem Proves He Was Always More Than Braveheart
Image
Mel Gibson arguably reached the peak of his prowess during the 1990s, having directed and starred in the historical war epic film Braveheart. The movie won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, solidifying Gibson’s career. However, one underrated crime gem from the 80s proves there is more to Gibson as an actor.

In 1987, Gibson starred in the buddy-cop movie Lethal Weapon, which is currently streaming for free. The movie not only allowed Gibson to stretch his comedic chops but also launched a successful franchise that has been mostly forgotten with time. Here is why Lethal Weapon remains one of Gibson’s best movies and why you should revisit it.

Mel Gibson’s Must-Watch Crime Thriller That Grossed 10x Its Budget Is an American Sleeper Hit Thats Streaming for Free
Image
Mel Gibson will always be known for his Oscar-level work in grandiose epics like Braveheart and The Patriot, but almost 40 years ago, he teamed up with Danny Glover for a classic crime thriller that’s stumbled back to streaming success. Gibson and Glover star alongside Gary Busey and Mitchell Ryan in Lethal Weapon, the 1987 action classic following two nearly-paired polar opposite police officers who must put aside their differences to stop a gang of drug smugglers. Lethal Weapon is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV in America, where it’s one of the most popular movies for the streamer, sitting at #8 at the time of writing. The film grossed $120 million against a modest $12 million budget, and it also earned scores of 81% from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shane Black wrote the script for Lethal Weapon, and Richard Donner directed the film. Black went on to direct films...

6 Movies Where The Rock Went to Jungle: Which One Should You Watch or Skip?
Image
Some men climb mountains. The Rock seems content battling snakes, spirits, and stone-templed curses, all without leaving the jungle. With six separate movies set deep in foliage and danger, Dwayne Johnson’s cinematic résumé seems to have sprouted its own subgenre: The Rock Jungle Movie. But not all vines are worth swinging. Some of these adventures are well-created crowd-pleasers with stellar casts and clever writing, while others feel like overgrown relics or missed opportunities, lost in the underbrush.

In this rundown (no pun intended), we’re not just looking at jungle-set action; we’re diving into box office numbers, Rotten Tomatoes scores, directors, and performances to separate the classics from the cinematic compost. From Jumanji’s billion-dollar success to the forgotten misfire of The Rundown, here’s your definitive guide to which of The Rock’s six jungle odysseys deserve your time and which should be left behind with the mosquitoes.

Predator: The Yautja hunters are cool, but are they overrated?
Image
Since their debut in 1987's Predator, audiences have loved the alien race known as the Yautja. There is no denying that they’re cool. They’re built like 1990s wrestlers, their weapons are eye-catching and creative, and they’re brutal fighters with a code. Another bonus is that the creative teams have continued to upgrade the Yautja’s technology and appearance. Not seeing the same fighters, weapons, and attacks keeps people interested in the franchise and their star character.

Recently, the Predators franchise has undergone a bit of an upgrade. Their appearances in Marvel Comics with Wolverine, Black Panther, and Spider-Man (the latter is on issue 3 of 4), and two Hulu exclusive movies (Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers), have reminded people why the Predators have been around for close to 40 years. That being said, we can admit that they aren’t the unstoppable killing machines that we say they are.

12 Best Richard Donner Movies, Ranked
Image
When you look in the movie dictionary under "journeyman director," you'll see a picture of Richard Donner. Okay, no such dictionary exists, but if it did, Donner would be there, and deservedly so. While the "auteur theory" gets deployed by critics (*cough* film snobs *cough*), far less attention is paid to the journeyman directors like Donner. These are filmmakers who don't see themselves as "artists" infusing their work with similar styles or themes, but as hard-working craftsmen who want to make a good movie. And when you look over Donner's 20-plus film career, and the remarkable diversity of pictures he produced, you'll see he did just that.

Okay, sure, he made a few duds, but the dude started working when President Eisenhower was still in office, so cut him some slack. During his 60-plus-year run, he launched the superhero genre, reinvented action movies, created movie stars, worked in multiple genres,...

25 Years Later, Mel Gibson's $215 Million War Movie Is a Streaming Hit
Image
One of the most well-known movies featuring Academy Award winner Mel Gibson has found its online audience, 25 years after enjoying a solid theatrical run. The acclaimed actor and director's epic war drama The Patriot is now a streaming hit on Paramount+.

Via FlixPatrol, The Patriot is in the Top 10 of Paramount+'s movie chart in the United States -- ranking sixth on the list. The historical film is sandwiched between films such as Extract and Mean Girls. Meanwhile, the streamer's chart is topped by the Jack Quaid-led action comedy Novocaine.

The Patriot was set in 18th-century South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Gibson portrayed Benjamin Martin, an American colonist who fought in the French and Indian Wars, but opposed fighting against Great Britain. However, he was swept up in the Revolutionary War after his home life was disrupted and one of his sons was murdered by a ruthless British...

Why Clayne Crawford's Martin Riggs Left Lethal Weapon
Image
Broadcast TV has seen a surge in recent years. As streaming splinters the viewership of the United States even more, the good old broadcast model has been waiting in the wings to deliver some acceptable programming that's bringing more people on-board than ever before. But what makes a broadcast TV winner in the digital age? Is it banking on an old property that everyone loved about 30-40 years ago, or is there more to it than that? For Clayne Crawford, he definitely fell into that second camp, and audiences agreed with him on that point, or at least they did when it came to "Lethal Weapon" on Fox. The actor's disagreements with how the project was formatted played a massive role in his eventual exit from the well-liked TV procedural, and the behind-the-scenes details are fascinating.

First things first, "Lethal Weapon" was a TV series reboot of the popular Mel Gibson...

Rosanna Arquette – the older sister of actors Patricia and David – found fame as the bored housewife to Madonna’s bohemian drifter in 1985’s Desperately Seeking Susan. Elsewhere in your cinematic memory, she helped save Uma Thurman from accidentally overdosing in Pulp Fiction, and had her fishnet stockings ripped off by James Spader in David Cronenberg’s Crash.

But Arquette has been in all sorts of films, opposite all sorts of actors: she co-starred with Joe Pesci and Danny Glover in trip gone wrong comedy Gone Fishin’, Tim Roth and Renée Zellweger in mystery film Liar, and Christina Ricci, Vincent Gallo and Mickey Rourke in Buffalo 66. Mel Gibson's Iconic 80% Rotten Tomatoes Buddy Comedy Just Found a Free Streaming Home
Image
Get ready to revisit one of the most legendary duos in action movie history – without spending a dime. Lethal Weapon, the 1987 buddy-cop classic, and its three sequels that helped redefine the genre and launched a billion imitators, are heading to Pluto TV this July. With its 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, explosive action, and endlessly quotable banter between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, it’s exactly the kind of comfort movie that’s somehow still better than most of what’s in theaters today. And obviously, it still slaps. The movie is the blueprint for how to do a buddy-cop movie.

You know the setup: Two wildly mismatched cops are forced to work together. One’s a loose cannon (Gibson’s Martin Riggs), the other is days from retirement (Glover’s Roger Murtaugh). What could go wrong? Everything, obviously. But in the hands of director Richard Donner and a then-unknown screenwriter named Shane Black,...

Why Roland Emmerich's 2012 Spin-Off TV Series Was Canceled
Image
Hollywood loves a winner. In a landscape where some of the most marketable stories are underdogs overcoming the odds, the town still prefers seeing Goliath emerge victorious over and over again. In some cases, a presumed smash puts the cart before the horse, and the people making decisions up top have to recalibrate what their expectations are, especially when they make outsized bets on a property they believed to be a sure thing. "2012" was a very successful addition to the burgeoning portfolio of disaster movies from Roland Emmerich, and the film was a big feather in the cap of Sony Pictures for the year 2009 — a year that might as well be in another universe for how different that theater environment is compared to the one we currently occupy.

Emmerich tabbed John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandiwe Newton, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Oliver Platt to be in the gargantuan...

'Ocean's Eleven' Star's, 54, Hit Legal Drama Finds a Streaming Home Ahead of New TV Series Adaptation
Image
1997 marked the establishment of Matt Damon as a household name. His greatest accomplishment of that year, of course, is the beloved Good Will Hunting, which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck and co-starred in with Affleck and Robin Williams, catapulting him to immediate success. However, less than a month prior, he got the chance to be the leading man in The Rainmaker, an adaptation of John Grisham's 1995 novel of the same name, written and directed by The Godfather mastermind Francis Ford Coppola. In the context of Damon's career, the legal drama largely exists in the shadow of the titanic roles that came after, from The Departed to Ocean's Eleven, The Martian, and beyond. Starting on July 1, though, viewers will have a chance to revisit the acclaimed film on Paramount+.

The Rainmaker pairs Damon up with Danny DeVito in one of the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star's rare dramatic roles.

‘Lethal Weapon’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love | Written by Shane Black, Jeffrey Boam | Directed by Richard Donner

Nearly four decades after its explosive debut, Lethal Weapon remains one of the defining films of the action genre. Now, with Warner Bros.’ new 4K Uhd release, Richard Donner’s 1987 classic gets the restoration it has long deserved, reaffirming its place in the pantheon of buddy-cop cinema.

The film that kicked off the enduring franchise stars Mel Gibson as Martin Riggs, a volatile, grief-stricken former Special Forces soldier-turned-lapd detective teetering on the edge of self-destruction. Opposite him is Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh, the seasoned, sensible family man counting down the days to retirement. What follows is a masterclass in chemistry, conflict, and camaraderie — a mismatched duo navigating drug cartels, conspiracies, and car chases while redefining the buddy-cop formula.

Presented in both its original 1987 theatrical cut and...

Predator Kills The Marvel Universe #2 Sees Vibranium Wielding Yautja Taking On The Avengers And X-men
Image
It started with Predator vs Wolverine, escalated in Predator vs Black Panther, and then reinvented itself in Predator vs Spider-Man. Now, writer Benjamin Percy is concluding his Predator saga with Predator Kills the Marvel Universe.

Marcelo Ferreira is also returning on art duty.

In a press statement, Perry remarked, "That title? It's not misdirection. This one's gonna hurt. Your favorite heroes and villains will fall — even as others rise up against this extinction-level event. The Predator King is here — the Yautja are armed with vibranium — and Earth is now a hunting preserve."

The official synopsis for the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe reads, "It's the bloody kickoff to an epic battle between the Predators and Marvel's heroes! 'Saw' Franchise Now Under New Management as Blumhouse Officially Acquires the Rights
Image
Saw is a classic horror franchise that tortures audiences just as much as the characters in its films. From the first installment, Jigsaw becomes as frightening as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, holding a grudge against his victims that he felt took life for granted and aims to teach them a deadly lesson. With 10 movies in the franchise, not all were hits, but that's something Blumhouse is looking to turn around now that the studio is adding Saw to its horror family. According to Variety, the company which made hits like Paranormal Activity, Five Nights at Freddy's, Get Out, M3GAN, and more has acquired the rights to future films, shows, and other properties of the franchise.

For a franchise of this status, Blumhouse must've paid a hefty sum to snag it; however, the amount is undisclosed. The company bought the portion of Saw that was owned by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg,...

A Heartbreaking Steven Spielberg Drama Was Based On A Banned Book
Image
One of my favorite novels is Bohumil Hrabal's "Too Loud a Solitude," and it contains a line I think about every time I read something new: "My briefcase is full of books and that very night I expect them to tell me things about myself I don't know."  For while the act of reading is looking inward at someone else's words on a printed page, great writing has the power to expand one's mind and perspective in almost limitless directions. Banning and burning books has the opposite effect, closing things off and denying other people the freedom to explore ideas and make their own minds up.

Sadly, the contentious act of censoring books in the United States has a long and regrettable history reaching back as far as the first European settlers on the continent. One of the earliest examples was William Pynchon's "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption...

Promotion: How Lethal Weapon Became The Ultimate Buddy-Cop Movie
Image
When thinking about the best buddy-cop partnerships in cinema, one stands above all others: Riggs and Murtaugh. Lethal Weapon’s central duo gets to the very essence of action’s most entertaining sub-genre – two mismatched colleagues, each with their own issues, forced to work together, learn each other’s rough edges, and become an unstoppable team come the closing credits. It’s a formula that proved hugely popular through the 1980s and into the ‘90s, but Lethal Weapon – boasting a Shane Black script and Richard Donner as director – did it best.

Partly that’s because the film’s buddy partnership has genuine frisson. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is an outright livewire, always unpredictable and prone to dangerous moves – a gung-ho attitude that, ironically, makes him a top cop, even when breaking all the rules. This is someone who saves a suicidal man by jumping off a building with him (onto...
