Breaking Baz: ‘Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern On Saying Goodbye To Lady Cora And Chronicling Ava Gardner On Stage
Image
Exclusive: Elizabeth McGovern is fired up when she talks about sensuous silver screen goddess Ava Gardner, whom the Downton Abbey star portrays in a stage show that hits New York next week. Gardner, she argues, endured the “objectification of the female body, which is the basis of the entire movie business.”

Being a movie star in the 1940s, 1950s and into the ’60s took its toll on Gardner, who escaped her mink-lined cage in California to spend her final years in England residing in a grand apartment close to Harrods’ department store.

Ava: The Secret Conversations, beginning at New York’s City Center on July 29, is based on a series of tapes the writer Peter Evans recorded with the one-time screen siren in London over a four-year period beginning in 1988 which he then had published in 2013, more than two decades after Gardner’s death in 1990.

The show moves to Chicago...

Quentin Tarantino Hails Critically Acclaimed Netflix Series as “My favorite series, with no competition”
Image
Netflix is one of the primary sources of water cooler conversation in the streaming era. The platform is filled to the brim with binge-able content just waiting to be discovered. Thanks to a seemingly endless supply of content, the streamer became not only a source of conversation but also a source of comfort for many of us during the lockdown phase of the Covid pandemic. When everything was uncertain and scary, the Netflix lineup gave us the chance to shut off the outside world and escape into fantasy for a brief time.

It wasn’t just you or I who turned to Netflix for comfort during the pandemic, however. Even decorated filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino sought comfort and escape in the streamer’s content library. More specifically, Tarantino latched onto a horrifying Mike Flanagan series during lockdown.

In a 2020 conversation with The Jerusalem Post, the Kill Bill director expressed an enthusiastic appreciation for said program,...

I Can’t Unsee This One Rick and Morty Scene, It Changed How I See Everything About Beth
Image
Over the span of eight seasons, Rick and Morty has been absolutely bizarre, with inside jokes, pop culture references, and even spawning meme kings. Needless to say, over this long period, the series has been absolutely mental, with each episode introducing a little more trauma while also introducing new characters and a weirder narrative.

One such moment took place in Season 2 Episode 4, where the fans were introduced to Mr. Poopybutthole, an absurd-looking character, and a more peculiar catchphrase, “Ooh whee.” The mysterious being has been a part of several sad narratives, but his debut was perhaps the saddest of all.

After all, the creators of the animated series decided to showcase a dark and uncomfortable truth about human relationships, using Beth Smith. Sadly, in the process, our zany-looking friend ends up getting shot.

Beth’s Wine-Soaked Tears Leaves The Smiths Sick

There’s no denying that Rick and Morty is...

In its latest episode titled “The Last Temptation of Jerry,” the show has skewered the holiday season, making fans believe that it is better if we know less about holidays.

Frederick Forsyth, Author of Thrillers Made Into Movies Like ‘The Day of the Jackal,’ Dies at 86
Image
Frederick Forsyth, a British author of thrillers who frequently made the bestseller lists, sold 70 million books and saw his novels “The Day of the Jackal,” “The Odessa File” and “The Dogs of War,” among others, adapted into films, died on Monday at his home in Jordans, England. He was 86 years old. The New York Times confirmed Forsyth’s death, which his literary representative, Jonathan Lloyd, said “followed a short illness.”

“The Day of the Jackal” was adapted into a 1973 film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale. Fox played the professional assassin known only as the “Jackal” who is hired to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle in the summer of 1963. The film was a critical and box office success, and was also turned into a series in 2024 starring Eddie Redmayne.

Roger Ebert said of the feature version: “I wasn’t prepared for how good it...

‘Leverage: Redemption’ Boss Reveals the Question That Will Never Be Answered About Eliot
Image
Back during Leverage‘s original run on TNT, its third season villain was financial mastermind Damien Moreau (Goran Visnjic). What the others didn’t know until they’d actually encountered him was that their hitter, Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane), once worked for him. In “The Big Bang Job,” which aired in 2010, Eliot explained to the others — mastermind Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton), grifter Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman), thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf), and hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) — that he’d been trying to protect them, which he saw as his job. Though Nate thought they could handle Moreau, Eliot disagreed. “We’re out of our league, Nate. Every one of Moreau’s men has innocent blood on their hands. Every one of them. Every one of them are worse than me. You think you know what I’ve done? The worst thing I ever did in my entire life, I did for Damien Moreau.

Tom Cruise's First Major Project Is An '80s Military Movie With A Mandalorian Villain
Image
If I asked you to think of a Tom Cruise movie, you might suggest an entry from the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, or "Risky Business," or "Tropic Thunder" if you're trying to be clever by finding the less obvious option. If I asked for a Tom Cruise movie about the military, you would almost certainly say "Top Gun." However, Cruise's first major acting role was a military movie you probably haven't heard of: "Taps."

While "Risky Business" was the first film led by Cruise, "Taps" was the first movie in which he had a significant speaking part. Released in 1981, the film set in a military school faced with the threat of closure featured the future "Mission: Impossible" star as Cadet Captain David Shawn. Appearing alongside him was a young Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon in "The Mandalorian") as Cadet Captain J.C. Pierce.

The movie saw the cadets at Bunker Hill Military...

‘Brats’ director Andrew McCarthy reflects on Brat Pack legacy, reuniting with ’80s icons, and possible ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ revival
Image
"The movie is really about the passing of time," Brats director Andrew McCarthy tells Gold Derby. "I turned 60 not that long ago and I realized that I had begun to look at events of my life in a different way than I used to."

For the first time in decades, McCarthy reunites with fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Ally Sheedy, along with other stars of that era like Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton, and Lea Thompson, to discuss their rise to stardom in the 1980s and how the term "Brat Pack" — coined by journalist David Blum in an article for New York Magazine — impacted their careers.

Reflecting further, McCarthy says his fascination lies less with the Brat Pack itself and more with how perspectives on life evolve with time. "When I was 22, we hated it — all of us," he says. "We felt stigmatized — it was very limiting.

"Let's Get It Going": ‘Leverage: Redemption’s Parker Star Addresses Season 4 Renewal Chances
Image
As far as revival shows go, Leverage: Redemption has been impressive, with the third season recently premiering on Prime Video. With Season 3 now halfway through, fans might have begun to wonder about its renewal chances, especially considering how positive critical and audience reception are no longer enough to guarantee renewals these days. The metrics for renewals have become far more complex, and this is a fact not lost on one of the show's stars,Beth Riesgraf, who plays Parker. The actress recently addressed the show's renewal possibilities, suggesting that the streamer's subscription volume might be the ultimate deciding factor.

The original Leverage premiered on TNT in December 2008 and soon won over audiences with its weekly case format, which delivered back-to-back heist thrills. The show sees the central team of five, consisting of a thief, a grifter, a hacker, a hitter, and a mastermind, leverage their skills for a good cause,...

‘Babygirl’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor, Vaughn Reilly, Victor Slezak | Written and Directed by Halina Reijn

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star in this erotic office drama from writer-director Halina Reijn’s follow-up to last year’s horror favourite Bodies Bodies Bodies. Provocative and crackling with tension, Babygirl explores ideas of desire, control and illicit sexuality from a decidedly Gen Z perspective, while playing interesting games with established erotic thriller conventions.

Kidman plays Romy Mathis, the powerful CEO of a New York robotics company, who seemingly has it all, including two teenage daughters (Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly) and an apparently happy marriage to successful theatre director Jacob (Antonio Banderas). However, there are early hints that something is missing, because – in the opening scene – after faking an orgasm with Jacob, Romy sneaks off to a different room and masturbates to dodgy daddy porn on her laptop.

Road Show | The unlikely Sean Connery and Cher team-up that never happened
Image
In the early 1990s, Sean Connery and Cher almost appeared together in a romantic adventure called Road Show. Here’s why it never got made:

The ending of this story is that the movie never happened. Sean Connery and Cher never came together in a feature film from the director of Die Hard, and if you follow their respective IMDb pages, you’ll know their streams never crossed.

But for time in the early 1990s, it nearly happened. The project that nearly brought them together sounds as unlikely now as the cast list.

For over a decade, a script called Road Show was doing the rounds among Hollywood studios. A romantic action-adventure set in and around a ranch, it was in turn based on a book called The Last Cattle Drive, penned by Robert Day, and it moved onto the docket of director John McTiernan just after he’d enjoyed...

Why Greg in 'The White Lotus' Looks So Familiar
Image
So far, there is only one character who appears in every season of The White Lotus — Greg, who is now going by Gary in Season 3. We know Greg as the scheming and downright murderous former husband to the beloved Tanya McQuoid (the legendary Jennifer Coolidge). In Season 1, he weaseled his way into her heart. In Season 2, he bailed on her in Italy but secretly arranged for her murder. In Season 3, we find him living in Thailand at a house near the White Lotus resort, dating a "model" (the delightful Charlotte Le Bon). When another character from Season 1, Tanya's potential business partner Belinda (the hilarious Natasha Rothwell), shows up at the Thailand White Lotus resort and recognizes Greg, she begins to fear for her own life.

Greg/Gary is a scary jerk, probably the most explicitly villainous character in Mike White's show, but he's played by an extremely funny man — Jon Gries.

Leverage: Redemption season 3 release date set, and it's very soon!
Image
We’ve got a date for the return of Leverage: Redemption, so when can we see the return of the pack of good guy thieves?

It’s been a wait for Leverage: Redemption season 3. The second season wrapped in early 2023, and a third season was ordered in December of that year. Like many shows, the series was put off by the 2023 Hollywood strikes and the schedules of its cast.

But it’s finally coming as TV Line has revealed that Leverage: Redemption season 3 will drop the first three of its 10 episodes on Thursday, April 17. New episodes premiere each Thursday after that.

The original Leverage ran on TNT from 2008 to 2012. The plotline was Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton), a former insurance investigator deciding to hit back against the rich and corrupt taking advantage of others. Demi Moore’s Path to the Oscars Began … in the Brat Pack Era
Image
Demi Moore’s SAG Awards win for outstanding performance by a leading female actor on Sunday may be another stepping stone on her path to Oscar semi-inevitability, but what stands out has been her transparency and owning of her narrative, as exhibited in acceptance speeches that connect the dots from “that little girl who didn’t believe in herself” to her current stature as an icon of longevity.

It’s understandable to still be in awe of her Golden Globes speech for The Substance. Looking radiant on the stage, the actress eschewed a list of thank-yous to eloquently address the movie’s message about female insecurities. Let’s read the words: “I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'”

With much respect to this anonymous sage,...

Actors Who Won Oscars Outside Of Acting Categories
Image
When Ben Affleck took home a best picture Oscar for his film "Argo," he was asked to weigh in backstage on awards season punditry. In a video shared by CNN, Affleck opted out of the way people closely track the race. "I don't get into the Oscarology, and the pontificating," he said, though he acknowledged that many people enjoy following the process. "I hope people are interested in the Oscars, because it helps our industry, and it helps make better films," he added, "but it doesn't help me."

If that's the case, Affleck may not know that he belongs to a relatively exclusive club: Actors who have won Oscars for something other than acting. Many actors who have spent decades on film sets eventually get the urge to try their hand at other aspects of the business, from producing to writing to directing. Many try, that is, but fewer succeed,...

Stephen King' 'The Dark Half' Is Actually Semi-Autobiographical
Image
There is perhaps no other name more synonymous with American horror than Stephen King. The author has spent the past several decades crafting intricate tales of psychological horror and suspense that have cast a shadow over his readers' imaginations. Just as important to the canon of American horror are the films of George A. Romero. These two personalities, which first became intertwined with one another in Creepshow, crossed paths once again when Romero directed The Dark Half, based on King's novel of the same name. One of many stories by King that takes place in the fictional city of Castle Rock, Maine, The Dark Half is a reflection of a brief period in the author's own career.

Inspired in part by a time when King published books under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman before being outed, The Dark Half follows Thad Beaumont (Timothy Hutton), who writes under the pseudonym George Stark.

Timothée Chalamet is the youngest multiple Best Actor Oscar nominee since James Dean
Image
Youth is not wasted on the young, especially if you’re Timothée Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown star made Oscar history in more ways than one with his Best Actor nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic on Thursday.

Chalamet, who turned 29 on Dec. 27, is the youngest person to score multiple Best Actor nominations since James Dean. As writer and film historian Mark Harris first noted on Bluesky, both men accomplished this feat before the age of 30. Chalamet received his first bid at 22 for 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. Dean died at 24 in September 1955 in a car crash. Less than six months later, Dean received a posthumous nomination for East of Eden. He earned a second one the following year for Giant and remains the only performer to receive multiple posthumous nominations.

Chalamet is the youngest nominee in his category, which includes The Brutalist‘s Adrien Brody (51), Sing Sing‘s...

Stephen King's 10 Most Underrated Movies
Image
Stephen King has made a name for himself since his iconic debut novel, Carrie, in 1974, as a living legend of horror who truly changed the genre forever. His prolific career has been incredibly successful, producing 65 novels and more than 200 short stories, which have gone on to sell over 400 million copies, gaining him a legion of loyal fans. Unsurprisingly, his work translated incredibly well to the screen, with many of his works being transformed for both film and television - with many more still to be adapted - creating some of the most iconic horror works in cinematic history.

Though many of his works have been widely celebrated, some have been overshadowed or flown under the radar, such as Christine and 1408, both of which share many of the trademarks of King's classic film adaptions. King is a master of combining terrifying supernatural elements with a deep look at human psychology,...

Timothy Hutton, ‘Leverage’ Producer Settle Claims Over Firing From Reboot
Image
Timothy Hutton and Leverage: Redemption producer Electric Entertainment have settled a legal battle over his dismissal from the reboot after he was accused of sexual assault.

Lawyers for Hutton on Monday informed the court of the deal, which resolves claims from the actor and counterclaims from Electric. The agreement is conditioned on the completion of certain undisclosed terms within 45 days. Further details weren’t revealed.

Hutton alleged in a lawsuit filed in 2022 that his deal to star, executive produce and direct at least one episode of Leverage: Redemption included a provision that guaranteed him at least $3 million “regardless of whether Electric actually utilized his services in the production of the series.” He said the deal closed in February 2020, a month before reports surfaced that a woman had filed a complaint to the Vancouver police department alleging Hutton raped her in 1983 when she was 14.

Hutton, who was subsequently dropped from the series,...

Zoe Saldaña’s ‘Emilia Perez’ Extensive Screen Time Sparks Oscars Category Debates
Image
The long-standing debate about what separates a lead from a supporting performance has resurfaced this awards season. Case in point: Netflix’s high-profile contender “Emilia Pérez.” The Spanish-language musical, directed by acclaimed French auteur Jacques Audiard, has already garnered enthusiastic reviews and is poised to be a significant player across multiple Oscar categories. But the studio’s decision to campaign Karla Sofía Gascón as best actress while positioning her co-star Zoe Saldaña as a supporting actress has sparked a heated discussion.

Saldaña’s role as Rita, a lawyer who aids the drug cartel boss Manitas in faking her death, undergoing gender-affirming surgery, and emerging as “Emilia Pérez,” propels the film’s narrative. Her extensive screen time supports this argument.

According to Matthew Stewart of Screen Time Central, Saldaña’s performance clocks in at 57 minutes and 50 seconds, representing 43.69% of the film’s runtime. It’s also slightly more than Gascón’s 52 minutes and 21 seconds (39.54%) on film.

Leverage: Redemption star Aldis Hodge clarifies his return as Alec Hardison in season 3. After a bit of an absence from audiences, with the most recent episode of the crime drama revival airing in January 2023, Leverage: Redemption season 3 is set to debut on Prime Video in 2025 after moving from Amazon's ad-supported Freevee streaming service. Although the primary cast is all expected to return for the upcoming installment, there have been questions about how much Hodge will be involved.

In recent comments to TVLine, Hodge clarified that even though he will reprise the role of Hardison, viewers might not get to see too much of the skilled hacker. Hodge has been making the rounds, promoting his new Prime Video show Cross, which is based on the James Patterson novels, and he says that he will not be appearing too much in Leverage: Redemption season because of his work on Cross season 2:...

Leverage: Redemption Season 3 - Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
The popular revival series Leverage: Redemption is returning for a third season, but big changes are coming on the horizon for the show's new episodes. Coming as a continuation of Leverage, which aired its final episode in 2012, Redemption follows Nate Ford's widow, Sophie Devereaux, as she reunites his original crew to continue their crusade against corporate greed and government malfeasance. Like its predecessor, Leverage: Redemption takes the procedural format and turns it on its ear with clever plots that serve up weekly doses of satisfying social justice.

The first two seasons of the continuation were met with rave reviews, and it's clear that the team behind Leverage hasn't missed a step, even after a decade. Dean Devlin returned to once again serve as executive producer, and series creators John Rogers and Chris Downey also returned. This gives the revival series a sense of continuity with its predecessor and has...

Stephen King & George Romeros 31-Year Old Collaboration Is Only Half a Good Movie
Image
In the '80s and '90s, few names loomed over the world of horror as that of Stephen King. The prolific writer, whose titles included Carrie, The Stand, It, Salems Lot and many more, had become the wealthiest living author during this time. King seemed like the genre's undisputed icon, but only one name could rival his: George A. Romero, the indie auteur behind Night of the Living Dead and its subsequent sequels which gave birth to the zombie apocalypse genre. When Hollywood announced the two would collaborate on a movie, buzz skyrocketed. The Dark Half, directed by Romero and adapting Kings novel of the same name, rode into cinemas with major expectations.

It also helped that The Dark Half was a massive hit on bookshelves, even becoming the second best-selling novel of 1989. Orion Pictures, the studio behind The Silence of the Lambs, immediately optioned it and moved it into production,...

Nicholas Pryor Dies: Soap Veteran & ‘Risky Business’ Actor Who Recurred On ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Was 89
Image
Nicholas Pryor, whose nearly seven-decade acting career included hundreds of episodes of soap operas, playing Tom Cruise’s dad in Risky Business and Kathleen Robertson’s dad on Beverly Hills, 90210, died October 7. He was 89.

Fellow actor Jon Lindstrom announced the news on social media, saying in part: “Nick was an Actor’s actor, and an exceptional friend. … He was a mentor, a sounding board, a trusted confidant, and even a father-figure beyond, yes, playing my own father on #Gh and #PortCharles.” See his full post below.

Pryor racked up nearly 175 screen credits and half-dozen more on Broadway. After getting his screen start guesting on such 1950s and early ’60s TV series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Doctors, he played Tom Baxter in more than 75 episodes of the NBC daytime drama Another World. That led to a starring role on The Nurses, a 1965-67 continuation of CBS’ The Nurses, which...

‘Babygirl’ Review
