A 44% Rotten Tomatoes Cult Classic Is Getting an Unexpected Remake From 'The Book of Mormon's Dynamic Duo
Image
Don't touch that dial! The Book of Mormon co-stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells are teaming up on the small screen...and getting sucked into it. They're set to star in a TV remake of the cult 1993 comedy Stay Tuned. The new series is being developed for Hulu. Deadline reports that the series will be a loose remake of the 1993 film, which was directed by Peter Hyams (Outland), and written by Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker (The Flintstones); in it, Gad and Rannells will find themselves trapped inside the world of television.

Although Gad and Rannells won accolades for their star-making Broadway performances in Book of Mormon, and became close friends during its production, this will only be their second on-screen collaboration: they previously made cameos in Hulu's History of the World, Part II. Says Gad, "For over a decade Andrew and I have been the Laverne and Shirley...

Manimal (1983)
10 great sci-fi/fantasy shows from the 1980s that should be revived
Manimal (1983)
The 1980s were packed with a lot of fun sci-fi and fantasy TV shows. Many were in syndication as networks were a bit wary of the concept at the time. Sadly, many ended up being rather poor, and even the ones that were good were lucky to last more than one season, as viewers then weren't as inclined to indulge in sci-fi or fantasy.

Sure, we had some duds, and some shows are rougher to watch today on account of their visuals. However, there are still a lot of series from that decade that could be deserving of a revival now. They all had some good concepts and would be better for the world of streaming. If anyone is interested in rebooting past shows, these 10 from the 1980s would be great pics!

1. Voyagers!

Despite good ratings, NBC canceled this show after just one season, which ran from 1982-83. That cost...

Miloš Forman's Academy Award-Winning Musical Biopic Is Streaming Free Now
Image
Miloš Forman's critically acclaimed biographical film Amadeus has found a new streaming home. The 1984 Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards starts streaming for free this month on Tubi. Other titles set to be added to Tubi's library include Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, and Thelma & Louise.

The musical biopic was adapted by writer Peter Shaffer, who had already tackled the subject for his stage play in the late '70s. He was inspired by the 1830 stage play Mozart and Salieri by Russian playwright Alexander Pushkin. Amadeus follows Antonio Salieri's frequently debated contempt for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the young musical prodigy revolutionized the musical scene in Vienna in the mid-1700s. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of the film:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri...

Howard the Duck Star Seth Green Addresses 'Avengers: Doomsday' Appearance Chances
Image
When it comes to maligned Marvel characters, there are few that have had as rough a ride as Howard the Duck. Although his first on-screen appearance in 1986 has grown to be a true cult classic – and rightly so – the movie starring Ed Gale, Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins and Jeffrey Jones almost killed off the idea of anyone making another superhero movie on its release. However, the character has found a little redemption by way of several fleeting appearances in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Marvel’s What If…?, but will he be back for a stint in Avengers: Doomsday?

In a new interview with The Direct, current Howard voice actor Seth Green revealed whether he will be lending his vocal cords to the iconic fowl again soon. However, for fans of Howard, it doesn’t sound like a very positive update. Green said of a possible...

Celebrating storytellers: inside the history-making 85th annual Peabody Awards
Image
The 85th Annual Peabody Awards offered a night where truth was the headliner, courage was the theme, and storytelling wasn’t just celebrated—it was revered.

Roy Wood Jr., host of the American adaptation of Have I Got News for You on CNN, emceed this year's award show, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 1. "This is a little different from [hosting] the White House Correspondents' Dinner or the Writers Guild Awards,” Wood told Gold Derby before the show. “These people here tonight have told very serious stories about very serious things. I have a degree in journalism, so a night like this is just special to me on a lot of levels."

The Peabody Awards touched on everything from the personal trauma of transitioning (Will & Harper) to the institutional failures behind the Pulse nightclub shooting (Pulse: The Untold Story). From war zones in Gaza to privatized prison walls, the...

After announcing its winners list last month, the 85th Peabody Awards ceremony was in full swing tonight at Los Angeles’ Beverly Wilshire Hotel — in its third year at the locale — in a fete hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr.

The red carpet ahead of the main show drew stars like Anna Kendrick, Benito Skinner, Joel Kim Booster, Jon Hamm, Amy Poehler, Kerry Washington and Molly Shannon, as well as Peabody awardees like Amber Sealey (Disney+’s Out of My Mind), Shiori Itō (MTV Documentary Films/Showtime’s Black Box Diaries), Josh Greenbaum (Netflix’s Will & Harper), Richard Gadd (Netflix’s Baby Reindeer), the executive producers of Mr Bates vs The Post Office and the cast of Say Nothing.

The team from Al Jazeera (which took home two Peabody Awards) walked the red carpet while holding placards commemorating the slain journalists in Gaza that read “Targeting journalists is a crime...

The infamous Howard the Duck is set to get an in-depth documentary this Fall
Image
One of the biggest flops of the 1980s is getting a feature-length documentary. Back in 1986, Howard the Duck was such a box office disaster that it might have cost Universal production head Frank Price his job, and it single-handedly dispelled the notion that George Lucas was infallible as far as his projects went. On a massive budget of over $30 million (the same amount Return of the Jedi cost), the movie only grossed $38 million worldwide, and swept the year’s Razzies. Yet, it has an essential place in the pop culture as the first theatrical adaptation of a Marvel Comics character ever to hit the big screen, and it remains a nostalgic favourite of many folks who grew up in the era (including the writer of this article).

Now, Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired Howard the Doc or: How I Learned to Start Quacking and Love the Bomb, a feature-length deep...

'Howard the Duck' Documentary About Marvel's Disastrous First Theatrical Feature Acquired by Anchor Bay [Exclusive]
Image
Long before the MCU was raking in billions and telling large, interconnected stories with beloved characters like Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Captain America, there was Howard the Duck. Marvel's first theatrical feature film, which tried to capitalize on the success of the wisecracking, womanizing anthropomorphic duck, was a legendary disaster that had the comic book giant reeling for over a decade from its failure. For as plagued with controversy, contractual disputes, and odd creative choices as it is, though, its tale is fascinating. A new documentary titled Howard the Doc (Or: How I Learned to Start Quacking and Love the Bomb) now looks to tell that story for the first time in film form. Collider can exclusively share that Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired the project and will release it in theaters this fall, followed by a physical and streaming release.

Howard the Doc takes viewers on a deep dive...

'Ferris Bueller' Stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Finally Reunite for New Comedy
Image
Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye are about to have another day off. Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck, on-screen high-school best pals in the classic teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, are set to reunite on the big screen. The duo are in talks to star in The Best Is Yet to Come, a new comedy from Lionsgate. Deadline reports that the film is a remake of a French comedy of the same name.

Broderick and Ruck will star as a pair of lifelong best friends; after a tragicomic misunderstanding, one of them comes to believe that the other only has months to live. The two embark on a road trip (hopefully not in a borrowed 1961 Ferrari Gt) to find the "dying" man's long-estranged son, and to rediscover life along the way. The movie will be directed by Jon Turteltaub, from a script by Allan Loeb. Deals with the two stars are currently being finalized,...

The Lord of the Rings (1978)
4 sci-fi/fantasy shows from the 80s that should be revived
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
The sci-fi/fantasy genre has hit an all-time high with numerous new movies and shows. Epic sagas like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones have proven that viewers want to see more. Which sci-fi/fantasy series from the 1980s are due for a revival?

There are many 80s classics that have, or are currently, being reworked for the modern age, including a live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie, a Highlander reboot, a Predator sequel, and more. But that's just scratching the surface:

Knight Rider

David Hasselhoff brought Michael Knight, an undercover detective, to life in the NBC series Knight Rider. The series aired on the network from 1982 to 1986 and was an innovative story at that time. Knight was given a new identity after being shot and nearly killed in the line of duty, thanks to billionaire Wilton Knight, founder of the Foundation...

Review: Miloš Forman’s Best Picture-Winning ‘Amadeus’ on Warner Bros. 4K Ultra HD
Image
Miloš Forman’s Amadeus, adapted by Peter Shaffer from his 1979 play, isn’t technically a biopic, nor is it historically accurate. Still, it stands as one of the greatest film portraits of an artist for capturing the essence of their work. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has long been regarded as a genius for his innate skill, profligacy, and still-unmatched gift for instrumental melody. But of all his remarkable works across every style of music of his time, nowhere was Mozart more innovative than in the field of opera, and Amadeus is a suitably operatic treatment of his story: loud, emotive, volatile, and sweeping, blowing all facts out of proportion to reveal deeper truths.

Of course, in what feels like one more callous, almost cosmic joke at the expense of its subject, the film’s protagonist isn’t, in fact, Mozart. That would be Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), the court composer...

Marvel's 'Howard the Duck' Deserves a Second Look Purely for Its Absurdity
Image
The MCU is one of the highest-grossing franchises to ever exist. Containing several characters from Marvel Comics and featuring productions with special effects and action, the films of the MCU are guaranteed blockbusters. Yes, the MCU, at this point, is no longer just a series of interconnecting films but a license to print money. However, this hasn't always been the case. Before the world-building and clashes between superheroes and their arch-rivals, there was Howard the Duck. Released in 1986 and considered by many to be one of the worst movies to ever hit theaters, Howard the Duck has long been the subject of ridicule and mockery and is also considered by some to be a cult classic.

Howard, a walking duck from another dimension, can best be described as a surly, cigar-smoking, and beer-drinking curmudgeon whose existence on earth through a failed science experiment requires suspension of disbelief from the audience.

Peabody Awards Announce Return to Los Angeles This June, and Four New Jurors for 85th Annual Ceremony
Image
The Peabody Awards are heading back to Los Angeles, following last year’s long-awaited move to the City of Angels. After several attempts — delayed by the Covid pandemic, and then by the Hollywood strikes — the Peabodys finally made their move to the west coast in 2024, and this year the event will celebrate its 85th anniversary at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 1.

“Our 2024 debut in L.A. was a major success, and we look forward to continuing to introduce the wider Hollywood creative community to what makes Peabody the premier award for media that matters,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. “In such polarized times, the stories that Peabody honors are unifying in their clear call to address injustices and see humanity in all its beauty and messiness. Honoring such programs remains our goal.”

Peabody, which is based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia,...

Is 'Beetlejuice' Really a Horror Movie?
Image
Tim Burton is one of Hollywood's most exciting and unique filmmakers, with the famed director creating a lucrative niche for himself in the industry and emerging as the resident king of all things Gothic and macabre, becoming the mastermind behind hits like Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Big Fish, and Corpse Bride. With an illustrious career spanning four decades, Burton continues to dazzle and delight moviegoers with his whimsical blend of horror, humor, and fantasy.

Arguably one of Burton's most beloved and enduring classics is none other than the 1988 masterpiece Beetlejuice, which featured a tour de force performance by Michael Keaton in addition to those by Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Catherine O'Hara. The '80s gem is a masterclass in how to brilliantly combine genres and create an unforgettable cinematic experience, as proven by the fact that fans flocked to theaters in 2024 to witness the long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Marvel Just Dropped A Horrifying Twist On The Most Notorious Scene In The History Of Superhero Movies
Image
Warning: This post contains Spoilers for What If...? season 3For all the success of the MCU era, there have been some dark days in Marvel's comic book movie past, and one of them just took an even darker turn thanks to the last major superhero release of 2024. Prior to the MCU, there were several attempts to adapt Marvel Comics, from the early age of serials, with 1940s adaptations for both Captain Marvel and Captain America through to the weirdness of the late 1970s Spider-Man and Captain America movies.

But it wasn't until the 1980s that studios started throwing real money behind Marvel rights, well before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and the original X-Men movies changed everything. It's something of a forgotten period for Marvel, but in 1986, George Lucas threatened to ruin the good name of Marvel with a movie so terrible that it belongs in a museum. I never thought I'd be writing this,...

Why Jeffrey Jones Doesn't Return As Charles Deetz In Beetlejuice 2
Image
This article contains mentions of an actor who is a registered sex offender as of 2003.

Well ahead of Beetlejuice 2's release, it was confirmed Jeffrey Jones would not be returning as Charles Deetz, a character from Tim Burton's 1988 movie. Charles was the Deetz family patriarch in the original Beetlejuice, moving to Winter River with his wife, Delia, and teenage daughter, Lydia, from a previous marriage. Unless business opportunities were involved, Charles was basically aloof to everything going on in the Maitland home until Beetlejuice's ending, when the bio-exorcist made himself known to Charles and Delia. Ultimately, Beetlejuice was sent back to the Neitherworld, leaving Adam, Barbara, and the Deetz family in peace.

A handful of characters return in Beetlejuice 2, including Winona Ryder (Lydia), Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice), and Catherine O'Hara (Delia). Though Jones isn't reprising his role as Charles, a new member of the Deetz family will...

What Happened To Otho In Beetlejuice 2 & Why He's Not In The Sequel
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice featured the return of many beloved characters from Tim Burton's original movie. However, one notable character not in the sequel is Otho Fenlock, who was played by actor Glenn Shadix. Otho made a remarkable impression as Delia's interior designer/paranormal expert in the first film and would have been a welcome addition to the story of Beetlejuice 2.

Though Otho doesn't appear in the sequel, the film seems to have filled the void left behind with the introduction of Justin Theroux's character, Rory. Nevertheless, one can't help but wonder what could've been had Shadix starred in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It is unlikely that Otho would want to associate himself with the Deetz after the events of the first film, but Shadix and his character left such a huge impression in Beetlejuice that can still be felt in the sequel decades later.

Do Delia & Charles Get On The Soul Train In Beetlejuice 2’s Ending?
Image
Beetlejuice 2 reveals the fates of Delia and Charles Deetz, but the movie doesn't technically show whether or not the couple gets on the Soul Train at the end of the sequel. Though Delia and Charles are returning characters in Beetlejuice 2, only Catherine O'Hara reprises her role, considering only half of Charles' body appears in the movie. Jeffrey Jones doesn't return in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2, but the details surrounding Charles' death at the start of the movie allow for his presence through some storytelling tricks.

By the end of Beetlejuice 2, Charles and Delia are reunited in the afterlife, meaning their time apart doesn't last too long at all. Charles' death in Beetlejuice 2 is shared by a stop-motion sequence, revealing a deadly shark attack following a plane crash. The lower half of Charles is then seen a few times throughout the sequel as he wonders about the afterlife.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, Santiago Cabrera, Burn Gorman | Written by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar | Directed by Tim Burton

There’s a great scene in 1993’s classic time-loop comedy Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray’s character experiences a near-perfect day with Andie MacDowell’s Rita, but messes up right at the end, missing his chance to kiss her. On his next loop, he tries to recreate their perfect day for a second chance and fails miserably because all his efforts feel forced and desperate. That’s pretty much what it feels like to watch Tim Burton’s long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, which tries extremely hard to remind you why you loved the original 1988 movie, but ends up feeling like an incoherent mess, frantically shouting, “Remember this bit? What about this bit?”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice joins the characters 36 years after the events of the first movie.

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Confirms Delia Deetz Kept Her Biggest Promise To Charles After the 1988 Original Movie
Image
Beetlejuice is filled with plenty of eccentric characters in true Tim Burton fashion, but few stand out as much as Delia Deetz (Catherine OHara). Sure, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is more than memorable, as is the titular Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), but Delia has a certain absurdity to her that is particularly charming. Its due of course to the brilliant performance by Catherine OHara, as Delias antics help color in the first chunk of the movie before Betelgeuses arrival. Among these antics are her interesting design choices, as she decides to completely gut the house she and her husband Charles (Jeffrey Jones) have just purchased in Winter River. Come Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Delia is just as eccentric as ever (dare I say more so?) and has seemingly relocated to New York City. She still owns the home in Winter River, even after the death of Charles, and when she and Lydia return...

3 sci-fi films to watch to honor Star Trek's Teri Garr
Image
The world of Star Trek lost a true gem today, as Teri Garr passed away at the age of 79. The actress rose to fame in the 1970s, starring in some of the biggest movies made during the decade. Yet, despite her lauded standing for over three decades, Garr never forgot where she came from.

She remembered her big break and who gave it to her, and that just so happened to be Star Trek. While she had an infamous falling out with Gene Roddenberry following her refusal to shorten the length of her skirt, she still credits the franchise with helping her launch her career.

In her autobiography, she claims that after her time on Star Trek, the bigger roles started coming in. While Roddenberry may have never brought her back to the franchise, for one reason or another, Garr rose to become an icon and today, we celebrate three of her best sci-fi projects.

Quick Links What Is Howard The Duck About, and Who Is In It? Reception to Howard The Duck Why Fans Have Grown to Love Howard the Duck

Before Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, and Thor were on the big screen, there was Howard the Duck. Sometimes, critics and fans dont agree with how good (or bad) a movie is. Often, its the former that pans a film while the latter gives it two enthusiastic thumbs up. In the case of the 80s superhero comedy Howard the Duck, the film has received dismal reviews from both camps. Yet somehow, its one of those films people love to talk about, watch, re-watch, and eventually begin to appreciate for what it is. In fact, the movie has developed a cult following over almost 40 years since it premiered back in 1986.

This Beetlejuice star failed an SNL audition (and it wasn't Michael Keaton)
Image
Michael Keaton is hosting Saturday Night Live on October 19. The Oscar nominee has been getting lots of attention for reprising his iconic title character in the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and is a choice selection to host after three previous appearances.

Keaton has the comedic chops to be an SNL cast member, but he never actually auditioned. There was, however, a cast member from the original Beetlejuice film who did audition for the show, and was promptly turned down.

Several of the film's more overtly comedic cast members come to mind. Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones seem like viable candidates. Alec Baldwin is one of the most beloved hosts in SNL history, so he too would make sense. The only Beetlejuice star who auditioned for Saturday Night Live, however, was Geena Davis.

Beetlejuice Cast & Character Guide
Image
From the title character to the mix of living and deceased Beetlejuice characters, the movie has an amazing cast that contributes to its success as a classic. Tim Burton's sophomore feature established the director's signature gothic style, aided by Bo Welch's macabre production design, the Oscar-winning makeup of Ve Neill, Steve Laporte, and Robert Short, and Danny Elfman's eerie but iconic film score. However, Tim Burton also deserves credit for choosing just the right actors for his films, often against type.

Beetlejuice is one of Tim Burton's best horror movies, but it wouldn't work as well as it does with just any cast. Released in 1988, Beetlejuice was a surprise hit, owing a lot to its distinct visuals and unique supernatural premise. Beetlejuice also features several of the best performances from Burton's movies, including Michael Keaton in one of the defining roles of his career. Here is...

10 '80s Sci-Fi Movies That Didn't Age Well
Image
Warning: This article discusses topics of sexual assault, racism, and violence.

There are plenty of amazing 80s sci-fi movies, but some havent aged well. The 1980s is a brilliant decade for cinema, and titles from this time are generally some of the best movies of all time. Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Friday the 13th are just a few of the greatest franchises from the era, and each of them has changed the film industry forever. Science fiction is a particularly prominent genre from the 80s, a time full of hope and potential for the future.

However, some movies arent up to standard. Although they are a product of their time, some of these films have aged awfully and are now criticized for things like inappropriate storylines, offensive stereotypes, and poor special effects. Even a selection of the best 1980s sci-fi movies, while timeless classics, aged badly in certain ways.

Tim Burton's 10 Best Movie Sets
Image
If there's one thing Tim Burton is known for, it's the incredible set design of his creative movies. The visionary director Time Burton has a trademark visual style, one that's managed to shine through in the settings of his varied and often fantastical stories. Though there are many sets worthy of admiration in Tim Burton's filmography, a select few stand out as particularly eye-popping.

First and foremost, Burton's ability to filter any location through his unique art style is quite impressive, whether its on the set of a live-action movie or the intricate stage of a stop-motion picture. It's also remarkable how well Burton is able to delicately craft his dizzying worlds with strikingly little CGI, relying on mostly practical effects to sell the fantasy of his various worlds. While he might populate them with the same dozen recurring actors that collaborate with Burton, his sets are always wonderfully unique.
