Wednesday: Why Gomez Addams Might Be the Most Misunderstood Character
Image
Gomez Addams is one of the most misunderstood characters in Netflix’s Wednesday. Since the start, fans have labeled him as a jokester or judged him for a murder that was not even his fault. And it is time that we stop judging a book by its cover, for once you dig deeper, Gomez is one of the most emotionally layered and tragically misread figures in the Addams family universe. Behind the over-the-top affection and melodramatic flair lies a man shaped by trauma, loyalty, and unshakable love for his family.

Throughout the first season and now, audiences and characters alike have come to see him through a one-dimensional, distorted lens, one that hails him just a bumbling comic, a murder suspect, and the eccentric dad who doesn’t seem to fit. Wednesday might have reinvented the whole saga and the entire Addams dynamic, but fans need to see the patriarch for who he really is.

‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Part 1 Review: Fundraising, Ravens, & Christopher Lloyd’s Head In A Jar
Image
Like every other 90s kid with access to Cartoon Network, The Addams Family was one of the countless awesome shows that I grew up watching. The characters were odd enough to be interesting. The plots were almost nonexistent, thereby allowing my underdeveloped brain to keep track of what was going on. And what can I say about the soundtrack that hasn’t been said already? It’s iconic. Then there were the two live-action adaptations by Barry Sonnenfeld, which cemented this oddball family as an integral part of my childhood. And with each passing year, my respect for the performances delivered by Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia (Rip), Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Jimmy Workman, and Carel Struycken continues to grow. Despite the overcomplicated lore and storytelling of Wednesday, I did enjoy its first season, and I absolutely loved Jenna Ortega’s acting in it. Did I like the first part of the second season?...

‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ at 40: The story behind the groundbreaking Oscar-winning drama
Image
Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Bill Condon’s upcoming movie musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman is heading to theaters on Oct. 10. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, the film is anticipated to be a serious Oscar contender, spinning a tale of human connection between two unlikely prisoners — and the movie star that binds them together.

It’s the second feature film adaptation to spring from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Released on July 26, 1985, Héctor Babenco’s Kiss of the Spider Woman also proved a huge hit with Oscar voters, scoring four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 58th Academy Awards. It made history as one of the first films with overt LGBTQ+ themes to be nominated in both of those major categories.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is, at heart, a long conversation...

Image
David Dastmalchian is taking on one of his most exciting roles yet with his casting in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot. Following reports about the actor's casting in the film, Dastmalchian has officially confirmed his role.

While promoting his role in the new Paramount+ series Dexter: Resurrection, Dastmalchian was asked by Cbr's Caralynn Matassa about the Street Fighter movie following the reports of his casting. In the reports, Dastmalchian was said to be playing M. Bison, the big bad. While the actor couldn't share anything else about the movie, he verified that the reports were accurate.

As Dastmalchian said when asked what he could say about the film, "That I'm in it. That I'm playing M. Bison."

Julian McMahon's Doctor Doom Was The Best Part Of 2005's Fantastic Four
Image
Fans of the Fantastic Four have had an interesting run of things at the movies. There have been multiple attempts made to adapt the Marvel Comics franchise, with varying levels of success. While none of the movies have been fantastic, there is a bright spot in both the 2005 "Fantastic Four" film and its 2007 follow-up, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," and that's Australian-American actor Julian McMahon.

The late performer, who sadly died on July 2, 2025, at the age of 56, rose to fame playing womanizing plastic surgeon Christian Troy on Ryan Murphy's soapy drama "Nip/Tuck" and was cast as the villainous Victor von Doom in director Tim Story's "Fantastic Four" films. The movies are kind of a mess from a screenplay standpoint, but McMahon gives a truly perfect performance as Victor von Doom -- both masked and unmasked.

Playing Doom required a very specific approach, leaning into the sheer fun...

Street Fighter | David Dastmalchian to play the villainous M Bison
Image
David Dastmalchian, star of Late Night With The Devil, has been announced as the Street Fighter film’s primary antagonist, M Bison.

Late Night With The Devil star David Dastmalchian has been unveiled as the arch villain in Legendary’s planned adaptation of Capcom’s Street Fighter videogame series. Fallout's Walton Goggins was previously said to be in negotiations for the role around a month ago, that hasn’t come to pass. Instead – thanks Deadline – it will be Dastmalchian who (presumably) dons the scarlet outfit of M Bison.

M Bison, the Street Fighter series’ big bad, is the kind of sneering villain who rocks a cloak and shoulder pads so you know he’s the final boss to end all final bosses. Nothing says ‘fascism’ like the combination of cloak, shoulder pads and a peaked military hat. And as the terrifying head of the criminal organisation known as Shadaloo,...

'Street Fighter' Reboot Adds 50 Cent as Balrog
Image
The Street Fighter roster is filling up fast, and they've found some interesting names to bring these iconic video game characters to life. Street Fighter was one of the most popular fighting video games of the 1990s, alongside Mortal Kombat. With Mortal Kombat getting a new film series at Warner Bros., it was only a matter of time until Street Fighter got the same reboot treatment. Sony Pictures and Legendary Entertainment seem to be fast-tracking the film, as casting news is coming at us faster than several high-speed punches delivered to the face.

The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has joined the cast of Street Fighter as Balrog, a former boxer introduced in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, and who works for the villainous M. Bison. Shortly after news of Curtis' involvement, Deadline reported that comedian and controversial podcast host Andrew Shulz had joined the cast.

50 Cent Confirms He’s in Talks for Street Fighter Movie Role
Image
Given the success of the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot and the excitement around the upcoming sequel releasing in November, it was really only a matter of time before some bigwig at the studios blew the dust off their 8-bit video game cartridges and put together another live-action Street Fighter movie. No, we’re not talking about a sequel to that cursed Jean-Claude Van Damme version from the ’90s that gave us Raul Julia’s final, gloriously campy performance as M. Bison. We’re talking fresh cast, new direction, and a movie that could actually be… good. Well, it looks like things are finally heating up for the Street Fighter reboot. The first casting news is here: Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Blanka, WWE’s Roman Reigns as Akuma, and country singer Orville Peck as Vega. Street Fighter Reboot Reportedly Eyes Major Rapper-Turned-Actor for Balrog
Image
The cast of the upcoming Street Fighter movie is starting to come together. After a slew of fan favorites have reportedly locked down their actors, the latest update may have revealed the casting for the freakishly buff boxer, Balrog.

Per Nexus Point News, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is reportedly in talks to play Balrog in the live-action Street Fighter film. The Balrog character has been a part of the franchise since Street Fighter II, depicted as a boxing champion from Las Vegas, Nevada. He was first introduced as a non-playable boss players had to fight ahead of taking on M. Bison, serving as his personal bodyguard. The Balrog character was originally intended to have the M. Bison name for himself, as he was based on real-life boxing legend Mike Tyson, but the developers switched the names around to avoid potential legal problems.

Jackson rose to fame in the world of rap under the 50 Cent name.

Luis Guzman Hypes 'Wednesday' Season 2 While Promoting Action Movie Havoc

Wednesday fans have been waiting patiently – or impatiently in many cases – for the second season of Tim Burton’s reworking of The Addams Family to bring Jenna Ortega’s take on the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams back to Netflix. Now, the new season is only several months away – a lifetime, we know – but the hype around the new season has already started, and one person happy to buzz up Season 2 is star Luis Guzmán.

Guzmán follows Raul Julia and Tim Curry in taking on the role of The Addams Family patriarch Gomez, and in many ways his take on the character is much more in line with Charles Addams’ original comic strip character than any of his previous appearances. While speaking to MovieWeb’s George Edelman about his new movie, the Tom Hardy actioner Havoc, Guzmán shared a tease of Wednesday Season 2, noting that everyone is going to...

15 Actors Who Saved Terrible Movies
Image
When it rains, it pours -- especially in terms of terrible movies. Like bleach, they burn into your retinas and seep all the way to the brain, refusing to let anyone forget about what they just watched. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Even in the darkest days, there's a shining light, a twinkle of redemption, an actor who makes the whole ordeal that much more bearable.

Valiantly, saviors like Raul Julia in "Street Fighter" and Uma Thurman in "Batman & Robin" gallop onto the screen to defend the honor of cinema from the misdeeds committed by their respective movies. They fight for the audience, helping to turn mayhem into magic (if only for the times they're on screen) and bring joy to the joyless.

So, let us salute the brave soldiers who never gave up when others clearly did. Let us acknowledge the actors who saved terrible movies.

Jennifer Lopez's 'Kiss of the Spider-Woman' Catches an Awards Season Release Date in Its Web
Image
Kiss of the Spider Woman has crawled it's way on to the 2025 release calendar. Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna star in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, which will be released in time for awards season. Deadline reports that the Bill Condon-directed film will hit theaters on October 10. The film premiered to critical acclaim at Sundance earlier this year, and was acquired for North American distribution by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and Ld Entertainment.

The October 10 date will see it open against a trio of big-name films: Tron: Ares, the latest entry in Disney's cyberpunk franchise; Animal Friends, a Ryan Reynolds-starring live-action/animation hybrid from Warner Bros.; and After the Hunt, a new thriller from Luca Guadagnino that stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield. It will have to deal with leftovers from the previous week, as well, including Osgood Perkins' latest horror film Keeper, the...

A Minecraft Movie, and why the videogame adaptation curse never existed
Image
Warner Bros has landed an unexpectedly huge hit with A Minecraft Movie. But then, videogame adaptations have long attracted sizeable audiences…

What was the first ever live-action movie based on a videogame? The popular thinking is that it was 1993’s Super Mario Bros. In reality, it was Mirai Ninja – known in the US as Cyber Ninja – a big-screen rendering of an obscure Namco arcade game released in 1988. A full five years before Hollywood’s Mario adaptation, it featured a striking mix of katana-swinging action and giant Heian period-themed robots, yet largely drifted by unnoticed. Criminal, really. (Good news, though: it’s on archive.org if you want to watch it.)

Super Mario Bros, thanks to the recognisability of its name and the huge marketing campaign surrounding it, soon became infamous for its distinctly loose handling of Nintendo’s bouncy fairytale videogame franchise. Its critical and financial failure set something of...

Every actor posthumously nominated for an Emmy
Image
Nearly 14 months after his death in May 2022, Ray Liotta was honored with an Emmy nomination for his supporting performance on the Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird. A year later, Treat Williams received a bid for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, making him the 22nd male actor to posthumously earn recognition from the TV academy. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out who else has joined this roster during the seven-decade history of the Primetime Emmys.

The only wins that resulted from any of these post-death notices are associated with David Burns, Raul Julia, and Chadwick Boseman, the first of whom was this club’s inaugural member. Also included on this list is Will Geer, whose feat of receiving three posthumous bids at once (in 1978) remains unmatched.

All eight of the current male live action performance categories (plus the genderless character voice-over race) are represented on this list. The...

Image
What we first told you on Sunday is now official: Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and Ld Entertainment have officially picked up North American on the Bill Condon directed, Jennifer Lopez starring feature musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, which was one of the most buzzed about titles at this year’s Sundance. A fall wide theatrical release has been set just in time for awards season.

Look for Jennifer Lopez to be out there on the awards season trail, along with the new discovery in this pic, Tonatiuh, who wows as gay prisoner Molina during a 1980s Argentian dictatorship, an inmate who keeps his cellmate Valentín (Diego Luna) alive with stories about his favorite movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and its actress Ingrid Luna (Lopez). Molina’s stories are portrayed in colorful song and dance. An eight-figure P&a spend is in store to get the word out. Condon is...

Street Fighter reboot gets removed from Sony’s schedule
Image
It looks as if Warner Bros. isn’t the only schedule going through a schedule change with their movies. The new Street Fighter reboot was recently reported to have gone through some production changes as Sony was once in collaboration with Talk to Me directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, for re-adapting the famous fighting game before getting into a scheduling conflict and Kitao Sakurai, who had helmed episodes of Peacock’s Twisted Metal series, would step up for the task.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Street Fighter has now been taken off Sony’s release schedule after it recently secured a premiere date for March 20, 2026. No reason has yet to be given; however, the studio has also rearranged their schedule for Shiver, a shark thriller from the director of Violent Night, Tommy Wirkola, which was set to star Phoebe Dynevor.

After a couple of failed attempts to launch a film franchise,...

Sony Takes Legendary’s ‘Street Fighter’ Off the Calendar, Gives ‘Beneath the Storm’ New Title, Release Date
Image
Less than a month after the film landed director Kitao Sakurai, Sony has removed Legendary’s planned adaptation of the “Street Fighter” video game franchise from the release calendar.

The studio also shifted release of Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming shark thriller “Beneath the Storm,” moving it from August 2025 to July 3, 2026 to serve as a centerpiece of its blockbuster slate. That film also has a new name to go with the new release date, and is now called “Shiver.”

Emmy nominee Kitao Sakurai was announced as director for “Street Fighter” in February. The fate of that film is not known, but if it gets rescheduled, it will be co-developed and co-produced with Capcom, the video game developer and publisher behind the long-running franchise of fighting games.

“Street Figher” was last adapted for live-action in 1994, with a commercially successful and critically brutalized take starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming Na Wen and Raul Julia,...

'Street Fighter' Movie Pulled from Release Calendar
Image
Following the exit of the Philippou Brothers (Talk to Me) as directors in June 2024, despite Sony reserving Mar. 20, 2026 as a release date, news surrounding the film adaptation of Street Fighter went quiet. Then, in Feb. 2025, a new director was announced — Kitao Sakurai. It was a bold and exciting update and one which has now been trampled upon with the news that Sony Pictures has completely pulled Street Fighter from its release calendar for now, removing it from that 2026 release date. Sorry, Street Fighter fans. K.O. indeed.

It was back in April 2023 that Legendary announced they had acquired the film rights to Street Fighter, a series of games that has sold over 55 million copies globally. Soon after, twin Australian filmmakers, Danny and Michael Philippou, were in talks to direct, a move that was inspiring to say the least. In fact, the duo directed a funny sketch video called Real Life Street Fighter,...

‘Street Fighter’ Removed From Sony Release Calendar, ‘Beneath the Storm’ Shifts to July 2026 and Renamed ‘Shiver’
Image
In a series of changes to its slate of upcoming films, Sony has removed Legendary’s “Street Fighter” film adaptation, originally set for a March 20, 2026 debut, from its release calendar and shifted Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller “Beneath the Storm,” now titled “Shiver,” from August 2025 to July 2026.

“Street Fighter” will be co-produced and developed by Capcom, the Japanese videogame developer who launched the original franchise in 1987, and Legendary, who scooped up the TV and film rights for the prolific game series in 2023. Further details about the film, such as plot, cast, director and writer, are all currently unknown.

If eventually rescheduled, this wouldn’t be the first time “Street Fighter” made its way to theaters. Universal produced a big screen adaptation of the game in 1994, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia. In 2009, 20th Century Fox released its own spin on the franchise with “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li...

Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Nearing Deal With Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate
Image
The new adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman that stars Jennifer Lopez is close to a sale after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and Ld Entertainment are in final negotiations to acquire domestic distribution rights for the musical feature. Diego Luna, Tonatiuh and Tony Dovolani round out the cast for director Bill Condon’s film that hails from Artists Equity and Mohari Media.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is based on playwright Terrence McNally’s stage musical that debuted on Broadway in 1993 and adapted Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Condon penned the script, and the film features music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

The project centers on a political prisoner (Luna), whose cellmate (Tonatiuh) creates a fantasy Hollywood narrative involving his favorite star, Ingrid Luna (Lopez).

Producers include Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy and Greg Yolen. Among...

Selena Gomez can now count iconic auteur Francis Ford Coppola among her fans. The “Emilia Pérez” star recently received praise for her “Sunset Blvd” music video, which references Coppola’s 1982 musical “One from the Heart.” And Coppola himself took to social media to thank Gomez for revitalizing interest in his underrated feature.

William Hurt died on March 13, 2022, at age 71, just a week short of his 72nd birthday. The Oscar-winning actor starred in a variety of movies over the last four decades, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let's take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

He won the Oscar as Best Actor just four years later for Hector Babenco's "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985), playing a transgender inmate at a South American prison who forms a bond with his cellmate (Raul Julia), a political prisoner. The role brought him additional prizes at BAFTA and the Cannes Film Festival.

Hurt followed up his Oscar victory with two more consecutive Best Actor bids: first for Randa...

Image
After a couple of years in development, the film adaptation of Street Fighter, the hugely popular and influential video game, has finally found a new director. Kitao Sakurai has been hired to helm the movie, per Deadline, which Capcom and Legendary are co-producing together. Legendary Entertainment’s upcoming feature film adaptation of “Street Fighter,” the iconic video game franchise that has sold over 55 million units, will be directed by Emmy nominee Kitao Sakurai, the company announced on Wednesday.

The film is being co-developed and co-produced alongside Capcom, the video game developer and publisher behind the franchise. “Street Fighter” was previously adapted into a live-action film in 1994 with a cast that included Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming Na Wen and Raul Julia. It was a commercial success despite being a critical failure.

The History of “Street Fighter”

The first “Street Fighter” game was released in arcades in 1987 and has sold over 49 million units worldwide, becoming one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time. The actor’s son, Manoah Peter Tuiasosopo, shared the sad news on social media in a poignant post, which praised his father’s touching life (via Facebook):

"Dear family & friends, [it is] with a heavy heart, my family and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Our father, Peter N. ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Review: Bill Condon’s Surprisingly Apolitical Musical Adaptation
Image
For a musical so dedicated to celebrating and critiquing the transformative potential of cinematic fantasy, Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman brings relatively little of the kind of overwhelming star power that can truly transport audiences. This isn’t to say that the film is poorly acted or doesn’t understand how to deliver movie magic. In fact, there are few working directors who know better than Condon how to recreate the pizzazz of classic Technicolor musicals without it feeling like pastiche. But despite the material’s highly dramatic potential and handful of show-stopper moments, it too often feels like a well-meaning production that has many of the right elements but misses a cast that could bring it all to life.

Condon adapted Terrence McNally’s book for the Tony-winning 1992 stage musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, which was itself based on Hector Babenco’s Oscar-winning 1985 film of Manuel Puig’s novel.

Kiss Of The Spider Woman Review: A Heartfelt Queer Musical With A Breakout Performance [Sundance]
Image
As the films of 2024 alone have demonstrated, there's still a good amount of confusion about how a movie musical should function in our modern age. Even 2016's "La La Land," the film that ended up bringing back the popularity of the movie musical in a big way, wasn't interested in fully leaning into its ode to the movie musicals of classic Hollywood, using it instead as a jumping off point, a wry commentary on the subgenre and cinema itself. Since then, it's felt like each new movie musical has had to find some offbeat justification for its existence: this one is a multi-part blockbuster event ("Wicked"), this one is an anti-musical musical ("Emilia Pérez"), this one has a monkey in it ("Better Man"), and so on. Even "Chicago" director Rob Marshall, who for many years seemed to willfully bear the torch of keeping the more traditional movie musical alive, has...

Jennifer Lopez's New Musical Praised as the "Role She Was Born to Play"
Image
Jennifer Lopez has never gotten a lot of love from fans or critics when it comes to her acting career, but all that seems to be changing thanks to her most recent performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is getting rave reviews coming out of Sundance this past weekend. Lopez has been nominated for more Golden Raspberry Awards than she has Golden Globes in her 30-year career in Hollywood, but next year's Oscar buzz has already started thanks to director Bill Condon's musical thriller, in which Lopez stars as Ingrid Luna.

Fans and critics have been singing the praises of Lopez since Kiss of the Spider Woman's debut on Jan. 26, with Pete Hammond from Deadline calling it "the role she was born to play," while at the same time mentioning that the movie itself is "a master class in how to find the cinematic soul of...

A Teary Jennifer Lopez Wows Sundance with ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’: ‘I’ve Been Waiting for This Moment My Whole Life’
Image
Dreams do still come true, it seems. On Sunday night in Park City, Utah, the big “hot ticket” screening was the world premiere of Bill Condon’s much-anticipated “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a dazzling big screen adaptation of Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb’s 1992 Broadway musical of the same name (itself a take on Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name). While the story, about a pair of Argentinian prisoners who are brought together during the “Dirty War,” was previously made into a feature film in 1985 with stars William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga, Condon’s film marks the first big screen musical spin on the original material.

And, for star Jennifer Lopez, starring in a musical — her very first, if you can believe it — was the culmination of decades of dreaming. The film, which stars breakout star Tonatiuh as Luis Molina and Diego Luna...
