With the last full month of summer underway, Netflix has updated its film slate accordingly with several humorous films, some that do delve into back-to-school feelings and even a murder mystery.

In addition to the arrival of new seasons of Wednesday as well as My Life With the Walter Boys this month, two new Netflix originals will book-end August as well.

Yes, technically this one’s left over from July, but the return of Adam Sandler to the titular golfer role was much anticipated. Christopher McDonald also returned as Happy’s nemesis, and Julie Bowen’s Virginia Venit was back as well. New faces in the sequel film included musician Bad Bunny, football star Travis Kelce and Margaret Qualley as well as Ben Stiller.

William H. Macy has boarded Dan Fogelman’s Hulu NFL drama series, TheWrap has learned.

Macy will play Hank Durkin, the owner of the football team at the heart of the new show. He joins previously announced star Christopher Meloni, who will star as the head coach of the team.

Details and the official logline for the series are being kept under wraps, but the new series will take place within the world of the NFL and will involve a generational family component. No further details regarding the show’s plot are known at this time.

The series, which is currently still untitled, landed a series order at Hulu in October 2024, and Meloni’s casting was announced in July. Fogelman writes and executive produces the new series, which hails from 20th Television and Skydance Sports.

Exclusive: William H. Macy (Shameless) has been cast in Hulu’s as-yet-untitled Dan Fogelman drama series set inside the world of the NFL with a generational family component.

In a series regular role, Macy will play Hank Durkin. He joins the previously announced series lead Christopher Meloni, who will play Danny Roarke, the head coach of an NFL team.

The series, from 20th Television and Skydance Sports, is written and executive produced by This Is Us and Paradise creator Fogelman and executive produced by Jess Rosenthal with David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jason T. Reed for Skydance Sports.

Hank’s next-door nemesis Kahn is back in Hulu’s new King of the Hill revival — but you might notice he doesn’t exactly sound the same.

Kahn, an immigrant from Laos who loves to needle Hank for being a hillbilly, was voiced by a white actor, Toby Huss, during King of the Hill’s original Fox run, which ended in 2009. But for the revival, the role was recast, with The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng (who was born in Malaysia and grew up in Singapore) taking over as Kahn.

Joel Edgerton’s Train Dreams premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim — the film earned a 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event, we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to preview a new image of Edgerton in Train Dreams, and we also had the chance to ask director Clint Bentleya few questions about the film. Train Dreams is an adaptation of the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson. According to Netflix, the movie is about Robert Grainier, played by Joel Edgerton, a logger in the Pacific Northwest in the early 20th century, a time of rapid change and growth in the U.S.

Netflix describes the film as, “An ode to a vanishing way of life, an ever-evolving world, and to the extraordinary possibilities that exist within even the most simple of existences.”

Netflix has released the trailer for “Train Dreams,” a Joel Edgerton-led drama based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella that drew rave reviews out of Sundance.

The film is a portrait of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly changing America of the early 20th century. Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, Kerry Condon and William H. Macy also star, while Will Patton narrates.

Directed by Clint Bentley from a script he wrote with Greg Kwedar (the duo last worked together on the Oscar-nominated “Sing Sing”), the film is set to make its international premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It lands in select theaters on Nov. 7 and premieres on Netflix on Nov. 21.

Following its Sundance Film Festival premiere this year, the streamer on Thursday released the first teaser trailer for director Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams, giving audiences as glimpse at Joel Edgerton in the American epic.

Based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th century.

Narrated by Will Patton, the film also stars Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, Kerry Condon and William H. Macy. The film was financed and produced by Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler at Black Bear, and produced by Marissa McMahon, William Janowitz and Ashley Schlaifer.

Estrada will also co-write and executive-produce the series about a forklift driver who gets promoted to warehouse supervisor and “finds that upward mobility comes with a cost when his friends and co-workers go from viewing him as their brother to now being part of Big Brother.”

You’d think that once someone “makes it” in Hollywood, the hard part is over. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. If anything, for some stars, that’s when things start to unravel. It is wild how someone can be the face of a billion-dollar franchise while their personal life is falling apart behind the scenes.

They say that the threshold for success these days, especially for big-budget tent poles, is $400 million worldwide. A movie that crosses this milestone is more likely to get a sequel than one that doesn't. There have, however, been films that concluded their runs above this benchmark, but weren't rewarded with follow-ups. The biggest example, for the longest time, was Tron: Legacy, which made over $400 million in its theatrical run more than a decade ago. A follow-up to that film, titled Tron: Ares, will be released later this year. On the other hand, Duncan Jones' Warcraft has no chance of getting a sequel, despite making over $430 million worldwide. Both films cost around the same to produce, as did last year's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which made a hair under the $400 million mark worldwide. Kirk optioned the rights to author A.L. Jackson’s novel of the same name and has adapted for screen. She will also produce under her banner Primal Empire Studios.

Director is Travis Mills, who most recently directed the upcoming western, Frontier Crucible, starring Thomas Jane, Armie Hammer and William H. Macy. Producers are Kirk, Erica Steele (Don’t Kill It) and Karlos Ways (Mistletoe & Wine).

In the movie, Kirk will play Dakota Cooper, a single mother trying to rebuild her life in a small town when a mysterious figure from her past returns forcing her to confront old secrets, rekindled love and new danger. Kove plays Ryder Nash, an enigmatic ex-con whose return threatens to unravel and ultimately redefine Dakota’s carefully rebuilt life.
