The Real-Life, Ambiguously Sexy Feud Between Marcia and Jan Brady
Image
Now that the ubiquity of on-demand entertainment has meant no longer being forced to watch whatever TBS was rerunning when we’re bored, the kids these days mostly know The Brady Bunch in meme form, specifically the clip from 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel in which Marcia Brady responds to her sister Jan’s obvious lies about a new boyfriend with a pithy, “Sure, Jan.”

Thanks to that perfectly encapsulated dismissal, one of the most enduring legacies of the series is the fraught relationship between Marcia and Jan Brady, which was just as real off screen as on. It may not have taken the same form of middle child Jan’s resentment of being outshone by her older sister, but it did get a lot gayer.

We actually don’t know what it was that ignited the feud between Marcia Brady actress Maureen McCormick and Jan Brady actress Eve Plumb,...

A Brief History of the Behind-the-Scenes ‘Brady Bunch’ Dating Drama
Image
The Brady Bunch was groundbreaking in its depiction of divorce, blended families and shared beds, but there was one reality that the series resolutely ignored. In real life, if you throw an equally paired group of mixed-gender, heterosexual kids together in the same household and add puberty, what you get is less Brady Bunch and more Bang Bus. 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel spoofed this obvious blind spot by throwing some sexual tension into Greg and Marcia’s fight over the attic bedroom, but even that was pretty neutered by reality’s standards, because of course, in reality, “we all hooked up,” according to Greg Brady actor Barry Williams.

Possibly the most shocking behind-the-scenes Brady relationship drama was its most Freudian, if also a bit overblown. Maureen McCormick wrote in her memoir of having “a huge crush on Robert Reed,” her TV stepdad, to the point that she “really wanted to marry him,...

The Brady Bunch Had A Lot Of Spin-Offs You Didn't Realize Existed
Image
Sherwood Schwartz's 1969 sitcom "The Brady Bunch" was progressive and retrogressive at the same time. On the one hand, it vaunted the virtues of remarrying and finding new families, showing that step-siblings and second spouses could produce as harmonious a domestic unit as more traditional nuclear families. On the other hand, the characters were clean-cut and virtuous to a cartoonish degree, only expressing the blandest sorts of domestic turmoil. It's easy to be harmonious when every member of the family is scrupulous and clean. The show was more about mild, silly pet peeves than about legitimately hard-hitting clashes of character.

Of course, "hard-hitting" was not Schwartz's métier. He was a writer of high-concept, light-hearted comedies. This was, after all, the "Gilligan's Island" guy. He wasn't about to skew into Neil Labute family dramas with "The Brady Bunch."

And "The Brady Bunch" was huge. It lasted a gangbusters 117 episodes over its five seasons,...

MTV's First Original Series Was This Beloved Game Show
Image
MTV launched on August 1, 1981, famously charging out of the gate with The Buggles' hit song "Video Killed the Radio Star." It was pretty presumptuous and cheeky for the suits at MTV to assume that their new network was instantly ripping apart an old media landscape, but they were eventually proven somewhat right. MTV became, for a prolonged spell, a brand new cultural fulcrum for Gen-x youths. The network didn't just randomly showcase hip music videos — a medium that exploded in popularity thanks to MTV's machinations — but carefully curated them, allowing viewers to appreciate certain genres, labels, or artists they may not have known otherwise. Some early MTV explorers may recall 1983's "I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge." Hosts would introduce blocks of videos and even take requests. The term VJ entered the pop lexicon.

Also, to round out their programming blocks, MTV ran multiple news segments and documentary shows, updating...

Eve Plumb Ditched Her ‘Brady Bunch’ Image By Playing Teen Sex Worker
Image
While The Brady Bunch has become a nostalgic touchstone for multiple generations of sitcom lovers, it was never cool in real time, says Eve Plumb, the actress who played angsty middle-child Jan.

“You have to remember, The Brady Bunch was really not popular or considered interesting at the time,” she told Yahoo! Entertainment in 2023 while auctioning off some of her Brady memorabilia. “It’s only after the fact that all of these themes and digging into it and discussing and figuring it out has happened.”

The Brady Bunch “was not considered relevant. It was considered saccharine, and the concurrent shows were like Mod Squad and other hard-hitting TV shows, so we were seen as filler,” Plumb explained. “It was considered very safe, and I think that was our lane and we stayed in it.”

So what happened to teenage Plumb when her saccharine sitcom ended after a five-year run? She...

Dalene Young, ‘Little Darlings’ and ‘Cross Creek’ Screenwriter, Dies at 85
Image
Dalene Young, the screenwriter whose credits included the coming-of-age comedy-drama Little Darlings, featuring Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol, and the Mary Steenburgen-starring drama Cross Creek, has died. She was 85.

Young died May 9 in Portland, Oregon, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, her husband, director Robert Martin Carroll, announced.

Young received a Daytime Emmy nomination for co-writing the 1999 Showtime children’s special Locked in Silence and landed a Christopher Award and a Humanitas Prize nomination for her work on the 1992 NBC telefilm Jonathan: The Boy Nobody Wanted.

She also wrote the films The Baby-Sitters Club (1995) and Baby Luv (2000) and other telefilms, including 1983’s Will There Really Be a Morning? — based on actress Frances Farmer’s autobiography — 2000’s The Last Dance and 2002’s Miss Lettie and Me.

“In her heyday, she was arguably the top writer of made-for-television movies,” her husband noted.

Young had a long career on the stage as well,...

'Wow, I've Been Canceled': Brady Bunch Star Says Getting Political Killed a Planned Revival
Image
According to one star of the series, a revival of The Brady Bunch came close to happening, only to be squashed before getting to production. Allegedly, this was due in part to Susan Olsen publicly expressing her political opinions.

In the classic sitcom, Olsen played Cindy Brady, the youngest of Carol's (Florence Henderson) three girls. During a recent interview for the "Walk Away Campaign" podcast (per Vanity Fair), Olsen said that CBS Studios had a planned Brady Bunch revival series in the works. The show was said to have followed Cindy and her siblings, now as adults, with Olsen's character portrayed as a libertarian podcaster. However, it's alleged that the network wound up scrapping the project due to Olsen's conservative views, particularly about her support for Donald Trump and criticism of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Brady Bunch: Did Any of the Cast Members Date Each Other?
Image
The blended family from The Brady Bunch were not as popular during their original run on ABC as they are today. The ’70s sitcom became a favorite among children and teenagers, who loved to see the sibling dynamics between the three brothers and three sisters. However, they apparently shared more than sibling love off-screen.

The Brady Bunch saw Robert Reed’s Mike Brady and Florence Henderson’s Carol Martin marry each other, both having been married earlier with kids. Mike has three sons—Greg, Peter, and Bobby—and Carol has three daughters—Marcia, Jan, and Cindy. The couple adopts each other’s children and the sitcom explores this unconventional big family.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Brady Bunch
Image
Anyone who grew up in the 1970s can tell you the story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls, and a man named Brady, who was busy with three boys of his own. Of course, one day, the lady met this fellow, and the rest is TV history. When Carol Martin (Florence Henderson) married Mike Brady (Robert Reed), all six of their children came together, along with their trusty maid Alice (Ann B. Davis), to become the sitcom family known as "The Brady Bunch."

"The Brady Bunch" is one of the most beloved and memorable sitcoms of all time. The adolescent antics of Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher McKnight), Bobby (Mike Lookinland), Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb), and Cindy (Susan Olsen) made for plenty of comedy and drama as the bunch dealt with the trials and tribulations of a blended family, sibling rivalries, growing up,...

Renovated Brady Bunch House Sold for Far Below Asking Price by HGTV
Image
HGTV suffered a significant financial loss when the iconic Brady Bunch house sold for $2.3 million less than the original listing price of $5.5 million. The property was ultimately sold for $3.2 million, which the listing agent believed was a more accurate value for a house that is not suitable for living and subject to restrictive Airbnb rental laws. Despite the loss, HGTV invested $1.9 million in renovations to transform the house into a full replica of the famous show, preserving its iconic status in television history.

Back in May, one of television's most iconic homes was put on the market: The Brady Bunch house. It now has new owners, but not without certain financial repercussions for HGTV. According to reports, the house sold for a significant amount under the original listing price, ouch! The network originally listed the home at $5.5 million, and its new owners purchased it for $3.2 million. This is a full...

HGTV Sells ‘The Brady Bunch’ House At A Loss & Below $5.5M Asking Price
Image
HGTV has sold The Brady Bunch house and it did so at below the asking price and below the price they paid when they purchased it back in 2018.

The Los Angeles home served as the exterior shot of the popular 1970s sitcom. HGTV bought the home and renovated the interior to replicate the Hollywood sets of the comedy that starred Florence Henderson and Robert Reed.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the home sold for $3.2 million, which the cable network had listed at $5.5 million earlier this year. HGTV bought the home for $3.5 million at the time and documented the renovations with specials like A Very Brady Renovation and A Very Brady Renovation: Holiday Edition.

Tina Trahan, a self-proclaimed fan of the show and the 1995 parody film, bought the home and said she would use the house located in Studio City for charitable events.

Stephen Root Talks Praise Petey, Career Highlights, That Precious Red Stapler & Much More
Praise Petey (2023)
When Freeform's new animated series Praise Petey premieres this Friday, you won't recognize any of the faces, but you'll certainly recognize the supersized talent behind them.

Prolific actor Stephen Root is among the actors who will use their voices to bring a wide array of characters to life in the new series by creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Drezen, a former head writer on Saturday Night Live.

We had the chance to chat with Root during a recent press day, and the pleasure was all ours. The interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

There's no doubt that you are familiar with many of Root's roles over the years.

He's incredibly talented, and his acting chops tear apart roles in both comedies and dramas, but he leans heavily into the former, even when taking a dramatic turn.

Whether it's a no-pants-wearing judge in Justified, a continuously...

The Brady Bunch House Hits the Market After Interior Renovations to Match the TV Show
Image
If you've been fantasizing about living in the actual house from The Brady Bunch, as if you had just stepped straight into the sitcom from your living room, you are in luck... as long as you have $5.5 million to spend. The Los Angeles house used for the exterior shots of The Brady Bunch house is back on the market, but with some major changes. Located at 11222 Dilling St., the home was previously up for sale in 2018 when it was purchased by HGTV. The network then invited back the actors who played the Brady Bunch children to help renovate the home's interiors alongside HGTV stars, making the inside look just like the set that was used for the sitcom, complete with the familiar staircase.

The process was documented for the HGTV special A Very Brady Renovation, which drew 28 million viewers when it aired. The special notably brought back cast members Barry Williams...

10 Groups Who Should Do The Masked Singer
Image
The Masked Singer season 9's third place finisher was California Roll, who was revealed to be a capella singing group, Pentatonix, and there are several other groups who would also be perfect for the mystery singing competition. Pentatonix is a five-member act, which is the largest in Masked Singer history. They brought their signature harmonies to songs such as "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, "Creep" by Radiohead, and "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.

The Masked Singer season 9's California Roll was not the first group to compete. That distinction belongs to Hanson, who competed on The Masked Singer season 5 as the Russian Dolls. In season 7, En Vogue appeared as the Queen Cobras, while The Brady Bunch brothers, Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (Peter), and Mike Lookinland (Bobby) were revealed to be the Mummies in season 8. Wilson Phillips were the season 8 runner-up, impressing everyone with...

10 Best Sitcom Character Catchphrases Of All Time
Image
Decades after going off the air, the family sitcom, The Brady Bunch, is still remembered for middle sister Jan Brady (Eve Plumb) screaming "Marcia Marcia Marcia!" out of pure jealousy over her seemingly perfect older sister (Maureen McCormick). Even though the line was only said in one episode, over the years, it became known as Jan's catchphrase.

In the game of television shows, a catchphrase is something that sets some players apart from others. It can not only become synonymous with the original character, but it can also create recognizability for the show itself.

"Dy-no-mite!" James "J.J." Evans Jr., (Good Times)

A spinoff of Maude and All In The Family, Good Times brought just that with every episode. One of the most popular characters on the show was James "J.J." Evans Jr. (Jimmie Walker), the oldest child of the Evans family, known for his silly catchphrase, "Dyn-o-mite!".

How ‘Drag Race’ Cast Navigated ‘The Brady Bunch’ Crossover Episode Without a Set and Minimal Props
Image
Watching Paramount Plus’ “Dragging the Classics: The Brady Bunch” — a recreation of the 1971 season 2 episode, “Will the Real Jan Brady Please Stand Up?” – audiences could easily think the sets were also faithfully recreated for this “RuPaul’s Drag Race” meets “The Brady Bunch” crossover. But the production was put together with the aid of green screen and the magic of virtual production.

A Variety set visit to L.A Castle Studios in Burbank took place under strict Covid protocols. Masks and face shields were worn for cast press interviews and a negative Covid test was needed before one could even step on set. Additionally, temperatures were taken before being shuttled over to the set.

Crew sat working on laptops, in front of them a giant monitor projecting a scene between Kylie Sonique Love as Jan Brady and Kandy Muse as Cindy acting against a green screen.

Green screen has become an...

“I’ve gotta say, I love hearing everybody’s stories,” says Eve Plumb, who played Jan on The Brady Bunch, as she and her five fellow child actors-turned-legends from that classic ABC sitcom — Barry Williams, who played Greg; Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia; Christopher Knight, who played Peter; Mike Lookinland, who played Bobby; and Susan Olsen, who played Cindy — convene on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for a rare reunion. “You know, we’ve known each other our whole lives, but yet I’m finding out really interesting things!”

Review: Wonder Woman The Complete Collection
Image
In 1974, I was 16 and curious to see ABC try once again with super-heroes. One fine Tuesday night, I sat at and watched Wonder Woman, horrified at the liberties taken in the backdoor pilot. Cathy Lee Crosby didn’t have the looks or the costume and the most interesting thing about this was Ricardo Montalban as the heavy.

The network somehow still saw the potential in the character and commissioned a more faithful pilot, this time with a comics-accurate costume and perfect casting in Lynda Carter. In the hands of former Batman scribe Stanley Ralph Ross, the show felt right. ABC agreed and a series of Wonder Woman shows were filmed, set in World War II.

This was the beginning of the jiggle era of television, as prime time was filled with busty, often braless actors and they pandered to the women’s movement with female-led shows that didn’t fulfill their promise.

How Maureen McCormick and Eve Plumb Turned Brady Bunch Fame Into Dream Jobs Designing With Hgtv
Maureen McCormick in Teen Angel (1997)
Here's the story of two lovely ladies, both of them with hair of gold like their TV mother, who spent their childhood on and then parlayed that sitcom stardom into new careers as TV home décor experts. Maureen McCormick and Eve Plumb, known worldwide as The Brady Bunch's Marcia and Jan, respectively, joined the Hgtv family with A Very Brady Renovation in 2019. The TV siblings, along with Barry Williams, Susan Olsen, Christopher Knight and Mike Lookinland, teamed up with a variety of Hgtv stars to redo the inside of the home that provided the exterior shots of the Brady compound to look like the TV set. A pilot, Generation Renovation, followed for Plumb, as did a new gig for McCormick hosting...

Walmart Strikes Ad Pact to Place Goods in Hgtv’s New Quarantine Home Fix-It Show (Exclusive)
Image
Walmart has figured out a way to get its goods in front of shoppers – even if the effects of the coronavirus pandemic are keeping them from visiting its stores.

As part of an advertising agreement struck with Discovery, the large retailer will have products and ad messages woven into and around a new Hgtv series that has homeowners record themselves as they make over a room with the help of designers stationed remotely. The “self shot” series, “Design At Your Door,” debuts Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern.

Discovery has launched several so-called “quarantine” concepts featuring Guy Fieri or Amy Schumer with quick-turnaround deadlines to help fill its programming grid as the pandemic has forced normal production to cease. But the fast pivot has spurred the company’s ad-sales teams to work even faster to line up Madison Avenue support.

“Normally, we’d have 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 weeks, but not here,” says Greg Regis,...

“Maureen McCormick of ‘Brady Bunch’ fame returns to Hgtv to help overhaul homes that are stuck in a design time-warp in the new series ‘Frozen in Time,'” Hgtv president Jane Latman told reporters.

The series is set to debut in spring 2020.

Here is the official description from Hgtv:

“In Hgtv’s new home renovation series Frozen in Time, designer Dan Vickery and A Very Brady Renovation’s Maureen McCormick will overhaul homes that are stuck in a design time warp. In each episode, Dan will bring the structure up-to-date, while Maureen sources beautiful decade-specific pieces that will give the home a refreshed look and a wink to its original era.”

Facts of Life Cast Reunite in New Lifetime Christmas Movie Trailer
Lifetime's You Light Up My Christmas reunites Tootie, Natalie, Blair, and Jo from The Facts of Life. It's the first time that Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Lisa Whelchel, and Nancy McKeon have all been on screen together since 1988. The hit series started as a spin-off from Diff'rent Strokes in 1979 and ran until 1988, making it one of the longest-running sitcoms of the 1980s. Fans of the series have waited over 30 years to see the cast together on screen. You can see them together in the trailer below.

Kim Fields stars in You Light Up My Christmas and is also an executive producer on the project. It was her initial idea to reach out to The Facts of Life cast for a mini reunion and they were all interested in helping out and getting together again, though George Clooney did not take part in the festivities. All it took was few phone calls.

Everything Is Coming Up Brady at Hgtv
When we initially posted about A Very Brady Renovation on Hgtv, the article took off.

There are a few times when initial support for a series matches the ratings that result. This Is Us achieved that when their first trailer took off like it was a blockbuster movie.

Well, the Brady Bunch pays dividends, too, both in ratings and with digital performance.

The excitement about renovating such an iconic structure was the real deal.

A Very Brady Renovation on Hgtv Will Blast to the Past for Historic Makeover

With all of the adult Brady children returning and an all-star Hgtv cast of renovators and design artists, fans are ravenous to see the structure brought to life.

When the house went on the market for the first time in 50 years, it sparked a bidding war. Even Lance Bass was interested in buying the famed home.

But Hgtv won the bidding war,...

‘The Brady Bunch’ Stars Get Nostalgic at the ‘A Very Brady Renovation’ Premiere Party
A Very Brady Renovation (2019)
“And that’s the way we remade the Brady House…” chimes the theme song of “A Very Brady Renovation,” the upcoming Hgtv series that follows the recreation of the classic TV set inside the L.A. property which served as the home’s on-camera exterior.

It’s just the latest stop as the nostalgia train keeps on, keeps on, keeps on moving long after “The Brady Bunch” wrapped up its initial five-season run in 1974. The series has spawned spin-off shows, movies, albums, a variety hour and a cartoon, not to mention the millions of dollars of merchandise sold around the series. But this latest update proves far superior to any “Brady Bunch” lunch box.

“This has been a special one because we didn’t have to play Bobby and Cindy — we could be ourselves. And it’s the 50th anniversary [of the premiere],” “Brady Bunch” actor Mike Lookinland explained to reporters at the...

Here’s The Story: Discovery Plans Multi-Network Boost for ‘Brady’ Series
Starting Monday, viewers of cable outlets like TLC, the Food Network and Discovery Channel may experience the strange sensation of hearing snippets of the theme song from the 1970s sitcom, “The Brady Bunch.”

On TLC, “Long Island Medium” star Theresa Caputo will appear sporting a ‘do that looks much like the one Florence Henderson’s Carol Brady wore in the earlier series. On Food Network, Duff and Valerie Bertinelli will coo over a porkchops-and-applesauce cake from the children in “Kids Baking Championship” that plays off an old “Brady” plotline. And on Travel Channel, “Kindred Spirits” hosts Amy Bruni and Adam Berry will discover a treasure chest filled with 1970s flotsam and jetsam.

The idea is to make viewers from across the Discovery Inc. pantheon of cable networks more aware of the new series, “A Very Brady Renovation.” The program, which debuts on Discovery’s Hgtv Monday, September 9, shows the actors...

‘A Very Brady Renovation’: Here’s The Story Of A Brady Kids Reunion 15 Years In The Making – TCA
The beloved Brady 6 are back together after more than 15 years thanks to Hgtv’s four-part series, A Very Brady Renovation. During the show’s presentation at the TCA press tour at the Beverly Hilton, The Brady Bunch alums Barry Williams (Greg), Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) convened onstage to dish on the reunion.

Through the years, there have been a number of Brady revivals and reunions that have involved some of the original cast members, but for this one, it was important that everyone was involved.

“There are so many elements that had to come together to make this thing work. It’s almost unfathomable,” Williams said. “I love these people. We’ve had great relationships our entire lives but not all together at the same time. It was crucial to have every single person on this stage in that show.

Barry Williams Thinks Hgtv ‘Paid Way Too Much’ for the ‘Brady Bunch’ House
Eve Plumb, Florence Henderson, Susan Olsen, Robert Reed, Ann B. Davis, Christopher Knight, Mike Lookinland, Maureen McCormick, and Barry Williams in The Brady Bunch (1969)
All six former child actors from “The Brady Bunch” were on hand Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to talk about their new Hgtv show, “A Very Brady Renovation.”

“They paid way to much for this house,” Barry Williams, who played Greg on “The Brady Bunch,” joked.

He was joined by his former co-stars Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Eve Plumb (Jan), Susan Olsen (Cindy), Mike Lookinland (Bobby), and Christopher Knight (Peter), who all participated in renovating the famous “Brady Bunch House” in Studio City, California.

But the truth was, the actors never actually filmed a single scene in the famous Brady house — it was only used in establishing shots of the exterior, while the rest of the show was filmed on a set miles away.

The Brady Bunch is going home on Hgtv.  A Very Brady Renovation is coming to the network, and it's not just any old home renovation show. After the actual house used for exterior shots on The Brady Bunch went up for sale in early 2018, Hgtv managed to outbid Lance Bass for the house and got the actual remaining Brady siblings back together for a show about restoring the home to its former glory and also making the inside look like the set of the house actually did on the show.  Maureen McCormick, Eve Plumb, Susan Olsen, Mike Lookinland, Christopher Knight, and Barry Williams took the stage at the TV Critics Association 2019 summer press tour on Thursday to talk about the new series, which premieres...
