It's 2025 And I Just Watched Mission: Impossible For The First Time - These Are My Honest Thoughts
Image
People really, really love the "Mission: Impossible" movies. Inspired by the 1960s TV series of the same name, the films star Tom Cruise as super-spy Ethan Hunt, with Cruise performing wildly dangerous stunts on-camera as his character gets involved in all kinds of espionage. These things are global blockbusters, with even the "worst" of the franchise knocking it out of the park at the box office, and yet, I had never seen a single one until now. Spy movies have never really been my thing, while Cruise's ties to Scientology make him less than appealing. Be that as it may, in the name of art and criticism, I tried to set my hang-ups aside and see what the heck this "Mission: Impossible" thing was all about.

Years of exposure to commercials for the "Mission: Impossible" sequels and seeing clips on social media had led me to believe that 1996's "Mission: Impossible...

Chris Pratt’s Controversial $257M Blockbuster Is Quietly Climbing the Streaming Charts
Image
Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Pratt is a made man in the animated world, having attracted record-breaking billion-dollar success in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. His most recent foray into animation, The Garfield Movie, earned considerably weaker results, but is a strong Netflix hit following recent confirmation of its sequel.

Via Collider, The Garfield Movie is a global hit on Netflix, becoming popular among subscribers almost a year after it was first released on the streaming service. The film is garnering attention in various countries, particularly Singapore, where it recently landed in the Top 10.

After voicing the popular video game character, Mario, in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Pratt took on another beloved character, voicing the Monday-hating charismatic cat, Garfield. The Garfield Movie is the latest big-screen adaptation chronicling the title character, coming two decades after Bill Murray voiced the eponymous role in Garfield: The Movie. Directed by Disney veteran Mark Dindal,...

Liam Neeson's Zombie Thriller 'Cold Storage' Unleashes Gory First Trailer
Image
Imagine if there was a spin-off to The Last of Us that starred Liam Neeson as a retired bioterror operative who teams up with a couple of young kids to stop a zombie outbreak. Imagine even further if that spin-off was a horror comedy thriller filled with over-the-top gore, and you have yourself Cold Storage, the new flick by director Jonny Campbell that was written by the same person who's penned such hits as Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man.

Thankfully, you don't have to imagine it any longer, as the first trailer for Cold Storage just dropped (seen below), and if it's any indication of what the actual movie will be like, we're in for a real treat when it hits theaters next year. Seriously, this movie has everything from exploding heads and a military cover-up, to elevator-riding deer and infected felines. What's not to love?

Brian Tyree Henry Was Working Out His Relationship With His Real Father Through His ‘Dope Thief’ Character
Image
Brian Tyree Henry is three for three when it comes to Emmy nominations in the major acting categories, having nabbed his first for best guest actor in 2017 for his appearance as the long-lost cousin of Ron Cephas Jones’ William on the NBC drama This Is Us; his second a year later for his supporting actor role as Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles in the FX comedy Atlanta; and now a lead actor nod for his portrayal of Ray Driscoll in Apple TV+’s limited series Dope Thief.

“This is a sexy-ass category,” says Henry of being nominated alongside Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) and Stephen Graham (Adolescence), to whom he expects to take a graceful L.

“I hit up Stephen, because I love Stephen Graham — I truly, truly love him,” adds Henry, “and I keep telling him, ‘It’s...

The Naked Gun Targets A Tom Cruise Classic With One Of Its Best Gags
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Naked Gun."

In Nicole Kidman's version of the cinephile's pledge of allegiance, we come to movie theaters to laugh, to cry, and to care, yet we don't seem to be doing much of the first part. To be fair, there have been several great theatrical comedies released over the past five years like the screamingly funny slapstick epic "Hundreds of Beavers," but they've rarely come from major studios. There are, of course, exceptions like "Barbie" or the miniature success of "No Hard Feelings," but otherwise, recent studio comedies have gone underseen, been relegated to streaming, or simply not been made. A comedy like 2023's extremely funny "Joy Ride" simply isn't treated with the same fervor as a blockbuster action movie. But if there's one film this year that possesses the power to hopefully change that tide, it's "The Naked Gun."

August 1st Will Be A Sad Day For Quentin Tarantino's Highest-Rated Film On Rt
Image
August 1 will be a bad day for the highest-rated movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is a well-known director, writer, and actor who got his start in the late 1980s. While he has both written and performed in movies that he did not direct, including Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, Tarantino is best known for his directorial efforts.

Quentin Tarantino's first movie as a director was 1992's Reservoir Dogs, a cult classic that kickstarted a career that includes major titles such as the Kill Bill movies, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Altogether, Tarantino's directorial efforts, none of which have splats on Rotten Tomatoes, have earned him eight Oscar nominations and two wins.

Netflix Will Soon Lose the Absolute Best Horror Remake Ever; Don’t Miss Your Chance
Image
The ‘00s were a happening time for horror remakes. That decade produced its fair share of forgettable efforts but more importantly yielded a number of quality reimaginings of beloved classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, and several more. Though not all of the reboots from the era made their mark, a large number of them certainly did.

Most of the reimaginings of the ‘00s that successfully made their mark did so thanks in no small part to a screenplay that took inspiration from the original without trying to recreate the source material in its entirety. That approach allows the film in question to appeal to the uninducted without alienating fans of the IP on which it is based. It’s a delicate balance, but when done well, it’s something to behold.

No remake from the ‘00s walked that line...

So many Star Trek actors almost starred in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction -- and one did!
Image
The wildly diverse worlds of Star Trek and Quentin Tarantino’s arguably best film, Pulp Fiction, overlapped during the run of Star Trek: Picard. That’s when Amanda Plummer, who played Honey Bunny in Pulp Fiction, portrayed Picard’s season 3’s main antagonist, Vadic. Plummer, the daughter of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country co-star Christopher Plummer, appeared in six episodes as the changeling captain of the Shrike.

But a look at a casting memo written by Tarantino in advance of production on Pulp Fiction reveals that several future and past Star Trek figures were at least considered for roles in the writer-director’s film. Tim Roth ultimately starred as Pumpkin, but among those on Tarantino’s list of potential actors for the role was Christian Slater. A massive Star Trek fan and the son of Star Trek VI casting director Mary Jo Slater, Christian cameoed in VI as a...

Chris Pratt in The Garfield Movie (2024)
The Garfield Movie utilized Chris Pratt as the voice of its titular star after Pratt received criticism for his curious attachment to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, that won’t stop him from returning for more lasagnas, as Alcon Entertainment and Prime Focus Studios announce that there will be a sequel to the lazy feline film, and Pratt will once again voice Garfield.

This recent incarnation brought us an origin story of sorts. We got a look at how Garfield had ended up with his owner, Jon Arbuckle. Kitten Garfield works his way into Jon’s life while he is out dining one night. Garfield’s background is explored even further as the plot dealt with his estranged father, Vic, who was voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.

Why Mission: Impossible 8 Killed Off One Long-Running Character Explained By Director
Image
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie has explained why the movie's tragic death was so vital for Ethan Hunt's final impossible mission. As Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is slated to be the last Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible movie, the story had to pack a punch; not just action-wise but emotionally, too.

While many speculated that this meant Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt was destined to die while trying to contain the terrifyingly malevolent AI known as the Entity, viewers were forced to watch one of Ethan's most trusted friends, Luther (Ving Rhames), sacrifice himself instead, as he defused a bomb to save a vast underground tunnel system and the city above it.

Rhames' Luther has been a franchise mainstay since the original 1996 Mission: Impossible movie, making his death and the effect it has on Ethan all the more poignant. In a spoiler-filled interview with Empire,...

Why Mission: Impossible 8 Didn't Kill Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt Explained By Director
Image
Director Christopher McQuarrie has explained why Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt survived his last, seemingly impossible mission in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. When it was confirmed that The Final Reckoning was meant to be the concluding movie in the franchise (though anything is possible in Hollywood), audiences began speculating about Ethan Hunt's fate. Would defeating the malicious AI known as the Entity prove to be his undoing?

Speaking to Empire, McQuarrie revealed that there had been a moment when he considered how Hunt's death might narratively impact Cruise's final, death-defying stunt and the film's ending. In a battle between two tiny biplanes high above South Africa's stunning natural landscape, it's ultimately Ethan's nemesis, Gabriel (Esai Morales), who dies during that fight, his head unceremoniously smashed against his plane's rudder when he tries to escape.

When did McQuarrie feel the temptation to make that scene Ethan Hunt's last one,...

Why Ving Rhames' Luther Died In Mission: Impossible 8, According To The Director
Image
Ving Rhames has played the super hacker Luther Stickell in all eight of the modern "Mission: Impossible" movies (although he only appeared in a cameo for 2011's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"). He was always a loyal friend to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), and was always capable at a keyboard. In the eighth and final film in the series, 2025's "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," Luther was capable and inventive enough to create a widget that could — when used juuuust correctly — defeat the evil AI monster known as the Entity. Luther invented the widget from essentially his deathbed, spending most of his time on a hospital gurney, located in a remote, stony basement room.

The villain of "Final Reckoning," Gabriel (Esai Morales), is so evil, he has no issues with planting a time bomb in Luther's cell, even though poor Luther was wasted away from cancer. In a climactic scene,...

'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' Director Talks Major Character Death: "The Story Was About Sacrifice"
Image
Arguably, no death in the Mission: Impossible franchise weighed more heavily on Imf agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) than that of Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in 2023’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning. However, it turns out that director Christopher McQuarrie, a.k.a. McQ, as Tom Cruise likes to call him, had been contemplating a way to kill off another fan-favorite, Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), since before the filmmaker celebrated with Cruise and Henry Cavill over Mission: Impossible — Fallout’s enormous success back in 2018. Fast-forward seven years, and that's exactly what McQ did in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, which has now been playing in theaters since May 23 — and only now is McQuarrie finally sharing his thoughts on why Luther died. McQ said in an interview during Empire’s Spoiler Special Podcast:

"The story was about sacrifice. The sacrifice in the movie had no teeth without it, without some loss.

‘Lilo & Stitch’: THR’s 2002 Review
Image
On June 21, 2002, Disney unveiled Lilo & Stitch in theaters, where it would go on to gross $275 million worldwide, create a hit character for merchandise sales and spark a live-action remake two decades later. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the animated feature is below:

With traditional, hand-drawn animation, Lilo & Stitch might not pack the higher-profile oomph of some of the Walt Disney Co.’s more cutting-edge efforts, but what it lacks in big-budget technology it more than compensates for with the kind of inspired humor and jet powered energy usually associated with Warner Bros.’ classic Looney Tunes than with traditional Uncle Walt output.

Add in a dazzling, luminous color scheme, an irresistible Hawaiian backdrop that doesn’t stint on local flavors, a refreshingly “real” sibling relationship and an emotional undercurrent that plucks ever so gently on the heart strings, and the result is something quite fresh and delightful.

Neatly covering...

“Good Luck”: Christopher McQuarrie Reveals Why Making a 'Mission: Impossible' Spin-Off Is So Difficult
Image
While the jury is still out on whether Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is Ethan Hunt’s final assignment, the movie is making waves around the world, entertaining fans with death-defying stunts and a very emotional core. Directed by Tom Cruise’s frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, the feature is making and breaking box-office records. With the eighth and purportedly final chapter in the long-running franchise out now, fans are wondering about possible spin-offs with their favorite characters, but McQuarrie doubts those will be easy to make for very substantial reasons.

In a new interview with the New York Times, the director was asked about any possible plans for Mission: Impossible spin-offs and McQuarrie pointed out notable challenges that’ll any future filmmaker will face, he revealed, "One of the things I love about [Ethan and his friends] is that they are a team. Mission: Impossible Movie Director Reveals His Major Issue With Spinoffs
Image
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning could finish the titular Tom Cruise-led action franchise after three decades, wrapping up the film series after eight movies. But despite Mission: Impossible's undeniable success at the box office, there hasn't been a spinoff -- and franchise director Christopher McQuarrie is explaining why one will likely never materialize.

Speaking with the New York Times, McQuarrie expounded on the significant issues that possible Mission: Impossible spinoffs would face, suggesting major changes will need to happen for them to work. Along with the film series requiring a "very specific type of filmmaking" to make each installment believable, McQuarrie believes movies wouldn't work without Cruise's character Ethan Hunt or his current Imf team.

"One of the things I love about [Ethan and his friends] is that they are a team. They’re all great characters, but if you spin them off, you would lose two things entirely... You...

Why Ving Rhames Was Barely In Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Image
In the first act of Brian De Palma's "Mission: Impossible," Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) watches most of his Imf team die before his very eyes. The core memory would inform his personal drive to save any future field partners at all costs through the entire series — even if they turn out to be villains in the end. Ethan may be the living manifestation of destiny, but he's almost ineffective without a team by his side. Lucky for the daredevil Imf agent, he acquired one of his most valuable assets (and friends) in the first film with computer hacker extraordinaire Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames).

It's difficult to imagine what these movies would look like had Ethan not recruited the formerly avowed Imf agent for a job that ultimately brought Phineas Freak back into the fold. The "Mission: Impossible" movies have made it a sticking point ever since that Luther is Ethan's closest confidant.

Tom Cruise’s Franchise-Killing Jack Reacher Movie Gets Out-Grossed Twice Over By ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’
Image
It's difficult to imagine anybody other than Alan Ritchson in the role of Jack Reacher, but, not too long ago, the character was played in two theatrical movies by none other than Tom Cruise. Reacher creator Lee Child wasn't exactly a fan of Cruise's casting as the famously towering character, and the series fizzled out after just two installments. The second movie, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, grossed just around $160 million at the worldwide box office, against a budget reported to be as high as $96 million. The movie has been overtaken twice by Cruise's latest release, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

Although it cost over four times as much as Never Go Back — The Final Reckoning has a reported budget of $400 million — the movie has grossed over $350 million worldwide in less than two weeks of release. It has also out-grossed Cruise's first Jack Reacher movie, which made over $215 million globally.

‘Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning’ Passes Jason Statham’s Highest-Rated Movie at the All-Time Box Office in 10 Days
Image
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning recently wrapped up its second weekend in theaters, and the film claimed another slew of victims after grossing $27 million. At the time of writing, Mission: Impossible 8 has earned $122 million domestically and $231 million in international markets for a cumulative haul of $353 million. Tom Cruise’s latest action epic has now out-grossed Spy, the highest-rated movie of Jason Statham’s career, by every metric. The Final Reckoning just recently passed Spy’s $110 million at the domestic box office, but it had no trouble overtaking the film’s $123 million international total or $233 million global total much earlier. Spy earned a “certified fresh” 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter landed at a 78%. The film also stars Jude Law.

Spy isn’t the first Jason Statham film to fold under the might of The Final Reckoning, and it likely won’t be the final one either.
