Don’t Miss This Mindmelting Michael Douglas Thriller on Prime Video: “An absolute masterpiece”
Image
Do you need more Michael Douglas in your life? I’m sure you do. His films are endlessly watchable and he’s got a perpetual charm that transcends time and space. Douglas has played more iconic characters than I have time or space (see what I did?) to list here. Gordon Gekko from Wall Street, Hank Pym from the MCU, Dan Gallagher from Fatal Attraction, and many, many more. One of my favorite pictures from Douglas’ storied filmography is currently streaming on Prime Video. And that’s all the more encouragement I need to gush about my undying appreciation for the title in question. What is the title in question? Well, I’m glad you asked, dear reader. I’m talking about David Fincher’s The Game.

Few films have blown my mind like The Game. The winding narrative, the show-stopping performances from a gifted cast, and the insane twist...

'Silent Hill' Will Join Shudder's Streaming Library on March 1
Image
Many people have forgotten that Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings’Sean Bean once ventured into the fog-laden world of Silent Hill—and lived to tell the tale. Making his first appearance in the 2006 movie based on Konami’s creepy and atmospheric video game, the film became one of the movies most likely to see Bean succumbing to one of his frequent on-screen deaths, but somehow he lived on to appear in the 2012 sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation. Fans of the Silent Hill franchise will now be able to catch up on the first movie as it finds a new home on Shudder after being absent from streaming for a while.

Opinions on the adaptation of Silent Hill differ greatly, from those who love the creepy visuals and many references to the misty, murky world of survival horror that made tinkling bell sounds set gamers' nerves on edge, to...

Denzel Washington Bluntly Responds to Tyson & Paul Fight
Image
Denzel Washington has been having a fun and intelligent press tour for Gladiator II. He's among the wisest and most accomplished actors of the film's mostly young cast, so it makes sense that the soon-to-be 70-year-old star has been front and center with many of the bigger interviews for the film. Along the way, Washington has lamented the hopeless political system, gave a harsh appraisal to a period when he made a lot of bad movies (or "clunkers" as he called them), and has now even weighed in on the recent fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Streamed on Netflix, the fight disappointed many people, and the glitches and buffering of Netflix downright pissed them off.

Related Mike Tyson Loses to Jake Paul but Netflix Users Were the Real Losers

Glitching, slow loading, and not even being able to find the fight are just some problems Netflix users are reporting on social media.

The Best Denzel Washington Movies, Ranked
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

In modern Hollywood, few names are as sure a sign of quality as Denzel Washington. Known for his impressive range of characters in genres as diverse as sports movies and hard-boiled revenge thrillers, Washington has one of the best careers in the business. He rarely appears in a bad movie. Since his career took off in the 1990s, the actor has been one of the industry's leading figures and shows as much class off-screen as in his performances.

Denzel Washington's uniquely strong career has landed him in some of cinema's most powerful roles, notably as a historical figure or a one-man army action hero. His versatility stems from him being a famously selective actor, something that has more than paid off for him. He's appeared in just about every genre of film and often projects a relatable, affable, and instantly likable persona...

‘One-Way Ticket to the Other Side’: Pornographie Exclusive Music Inspires Oldenburg Anthology Film
Image
“A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction,” Stanley Kubrick once said. “It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.”

The Oldenburg Film Festival and Brussels-based Cold Wave/Electro-Rock musical duo Pornographie Exclusive have taken this to heart. On Friday evening, they will put on a special show in the form of the world premiere of an anthology film called One-Way Ticket to the Other Side, accompanied by a live gig by Pornographie Exclusive (Pe), at Oldenburg’s State Theater.

The organizers promise to take audiences on a “road trip through the labyrinths of the human psyche.”

Pe consists of actress and dubbing specialist Séverine Cayron (The Belgian Wave) and writer, director and cinematographer Jérôme Vandewattyne (Spit’n’Split, The Belgian Wave) who was honored with last year’s Audacity Award in Oldenburg,...

10 Most Disturbing Psychological Thrillers Of All Time
Image
The most disturbing psychological thrillers dive into the darkest recesses of human nature and challenge viewers to confront uncomfortable themes. Filmmakers like David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky excel in creating thought-provoking and psychologically intense narratives in the thriller genre. Movies like The Game, Vertigo, and Requiem for a Dream leave a lasting impact on viewers by pushing boundaries and exploring themes of identity and trauma.

While thrillers can leave viewers on the edge of their seats with excitement, the most disturbing psychological thrillers get to the very heart of human nature and make audiences confront the darkest recesses of mankind. From heart-racing crime stories of sinister serial killers to surreal dreamscapes that shake the very foundations of perceived reality, the psychological thriller genre goes to extremes seldom seen in other types of movies. These tense and shocking stories can often be too much for viewers to bear, as the uncomfortable...

8 Movie Plot Twists I Wish I Could Forget To Experience Them Again
Image
The plot twists in these films were mind-blowing and changed the viewing experience forever. Uncovering clues and unraveling the mysteries behind each twist was a thrilling journey. While rewatching brings new insights, nothing compares to the excitement of experiencing the twists for the first time.

Theres nothing more exciting than a well-executed plot twist, but sadly, once its been revealed, it's impossible to experience the film the same way ever again. While I agree that rewatching a movie with knowledge of its twist can also be very enjoyable, the experience has been irreparably changed because I cant help but constantly try to spot clues to its twist the whole way through. If only there was a way to erase these films from my memory, then I would love to go back and experience them again, like it was the very first time.

The best movie twists often come as total surprises in the moment,...

Screambox Hidden Gems: 5 Movies to Stream This Week Including ‘Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary

If bustin’ makes you feel good, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary should be at the top of your queue. Imagine Sam Raimi remaking Ghostbusters from a Kevin Williamson script, and you have a pretty good idea of what this Brazilian horror-comedy is like: gory, self-aware, irreverent, and wildly entertaining.

When a local high school summons Bloody Mary, the Ghoulbusters — a team of local YouTubers with a cheesy ghost hunting show — are called in to take out the vengeful spirit. In addition to possessing people to the point of cranial combustion, the ghost exploits the high school setting by haunting inanimate objects,...

David Fincher Thriller The Game to Be Adapted Into a TV Series
Image
The Game, a cult classic thriller from the 80s directed by David Fincher, will be adapted into a television series by Kevin Williamson, known for the Scream saga. The movie, despite being overshadowed by Fincher's other films, is still captivating and intriguing, which is why it was chosen for the television adaptation. This deal with Universal Television also includes a series adaptation of Rear Window and The It Girl, showcasing Williamson's creativity and success as a producer.

80s cult classic thriller directed by David Fincher, The Game, will become a television series thanks to the writer and producer of the Scream saga, Kevin Williamson.

The movie, which stars Michael Douglas, Sean Penn and Deborah Kara Unger, was the third project in Fincher's career as a director, after Alien 3 and Se7en, and just before Fight Club, which may have caused it to also be forgotten among his filmography. But...

David Fincher Cult Classic Thriller Getting TV Remake From Scream Creator
Image
David Fincher's The Game is getting a TV remake after nearly 30 years, and it could be even more terrifying in a modern context. Fincher has been critical of his work on the original movie, particularly the third act, but the themes of isolation and technology are perfect for a modern retelling. The updated version of The Game could explore how technology can be used against the central character, raising the stakes and capitalizing on suspenseful potential.

Nearly 30 years after the original movie hit theaters, David Fincher's The Game is getting a TV remake. The 1997 thriller revolved around Michael Douglas' Nicholas Van Orton, a wealthy investment banker who is invited by his estranged brother to take part in a mysterious game, resulting in a deadly web of paranoia and dark secrets being unearthed. Also starring Sean Penn and Deborah Kara Unger, the movie was considered a box office disappointment in...

Crash (Nc-17 Cut) Review | A Forgotten Masterpiece Proving Cronenberg Was Ahead of His Time
Image
If you're like me, you often wonder why there aren't more erotic thrillers about car crashes. Ok, maybe I don't ever wonder that, but after David Cronenberg's largely forgotten 1996 masterpiece Crash just screened at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles County, it's hard to shake the turnt-up feeling you get after watching the original Nc-17 version. Wait, did it get the new MPAA rating because new scenes were since added? No, they were there in the first place, but the producers at the time held the key to the nude scenes that were removed from the finished product in order to get a more audience-suited R-rating — for the sake of box-office success, of course.

Mission accomplished? No. Cronenberg was ahead of his time, and if Crash were released today to theaters everywhere with the sexy Nc-17 rating slapped on, who knows how many dollars it'd rake in? Makes you think.

The Game Ending, Explained
Image
David Fincher's impressive thriller The Game was responsible for consolidating the director's situation in Hollywood. Even if the box-office results were meek, no one had been able to replicate the quality of the genre since Jonathan Demme did what he did in Silence of the Lambs.

But Fincher had blown Hollywood's vanilla model with his 1995 feature Se7en, and now with more confidence, he had attempted to do the same with another clever script. The result was a film that spoke highly of his storytelling abilities, and his masterful vision of using twists as selling points. With the help of a cinema megastar, The Game presented audiences with a complex plot, unlike other films of this nature, and forced them to see beyond the usual storyline resolution.

The Game ended up being a high-concept genre film that proved Hollywood wasn't entirely afraid of experimenting with harder-to-process plots with the lead Michael Douglas.

David Cronenberg’s ‘Crash’ – An Unconventional Erotic Thriller/Slasher
Image
On the surface, David Cronenberg’s 1996 adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s 1973 novel Crash is a drama about an unlikely group of people who come together over their shared fascination with car crashes.

The novel is written in the first person from the point of view of Ballard’s proxy, James Ballard. He’s a successful film producer in an open marriage to wife Catherine; both partners routinely engage in casual sex with co-workers and strangers alike, seemingly in pursuit of upending their relationship ennui.

The sex, which is captured by Ballard in incredibly specific and laborious prose, is cold, dispassionate, and almost clinical. The novel is often described as a work of science-fiction; despite containing virtually none of the tropes of the genre, Crash reads like a warning of a dystopian future in which citizens have become so desensitized that they will be pushed to pursue more and more extreme...

The Game Cast & Character Guide
Image
David Fincher’s The Game is a fascinating thriller, and its all-star cast makes the movie one of the most memorable and powerful entries in the director’s filmography. Released in 1997, The Game chronicles the complex relationship between two wealthy brothers who find themselves caught up in a game of secrets and deception. The Game is among David Fincher's most rewatchable movies because it features plenty of twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats and withhold the truth right until the very end of the story, warranting multiple viewings to really see how it all comes together.

David Fincher's best movies are known for their celebrity casts and powerful performances, several of which have received Academy Award nominations over the years. From Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield in The Social Network to Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, the director clearly knows how to draw...

Emilio Estevez On Long Trip To Recapture ‘The Way’ Rights, Fathom Re-Release & Plans For Another One
Image
Exclusive: After a two-year journey to gain back the rights to The Way, Emilio Estevez has arranged with Fathom Events to re-release the film nationwide on May 16 on about 800 screens or more. The effort has led to not only a chance to dust off a 12-year old film, but also to start progress on a sequel.

The film was scripted and directed by Estevez, partly inspired by the Jack Hitt book Off The Road: A Modern Day Walk Down the Pilgrim’s Route Into Spain. The film starred Estevez’s dad, Martin Sheen, and the director played the small role of a man who died while making the pilgrimage called El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. This is where the Apostle James was buried. His dad takes over the effort, his son’s ashes in tow, and is about the people he meets along...

Nicolas Winding Refn on Making Dark Danish Fairy Tale ‘Copenhagen Cowboy’
Image
The first time Nicolas Winding Refn returned home to Denmark from L.A., it was out of financial necessity.

After the barnstorming success of his first two films, Pusher (1996) and Bleeder (1999), Copenhagen-set crime dramas starring a then-unknown actor by the name of Mads Mikkelsen, Refn went Hollywood with the ambitious psychological thriller Fear X (2003) starring John Turturro and Deborah Kara Unger. But Fear X bombed so badly, it forced Refn’s film company Jang Go Star into bankruptcy and sent the director home to try to repay a 5.5 million, in Danish currency, debt with a pair of Pusher sequels.

Late-career redemption came with Drive (2011), starring Ryan Gosling, which won Refn the best director honor in Cannes (and picked up an Oscar nomination for best sound editing), and The Neon Demon (2016), another LA-set film, which established Refn’s trippy, neon-tinged aesthetic among a growing based of art-house fans.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit,...

The Long Night Review: Supernatural Demon Cult Brings Terror in Arduous Horror Feature
Grace Covington (Scout Taylor-Compton) wants nothing more than to find her birth parents. We’re told her former foster child has been looking for quite some time, perhaps helped in part by her Princeton-graduate, Hamptons-vacationing jock of a boyfriend’s (Nolan Gerard Funk’s Jack) money. Well, she finally has a lead thanks to the owner (King Orba’s Frank) of an old plantation down in Charleston—apparently near where she was born. He’s invited her to come stay and hear what he knows to point her in the right direction. Jack agrees to accompany her despite seeming like the kind of guy who’s never gone below the Mason-Dixon line in his life, declaring his undying love before throwing her to the wolves that are his parents on the way down.

It’s the usual introduction for this type of film: urban comfort making way towards backwoods anxiety.

The Crash Controversy Explained
David Cronenberg
Is it a sexually depraved nightmare or artistic triumph? Critics and audiences were divided on David Cronenberg's "Crash." Based on J.G. Ballard's equally controversial novel, "Crash" follows film producer James Ballard (James Spader), who has a detached relationship with his wife Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger). They have an open marriage and eagerly share the details of their trysts with one another, but James feels unenthusiastic about sex in general. Everything changes when he gets into a serious car accident that leads him to discover an underground subculture of car-crash sexual fetishism. Both James and Catherine find sexual euphoria in the perverse fusion of flesh and metal.

Despite the highly sexual content, "Crash" is anything but titillating. Cronenberg's clinical direction, the...

The ‘Succession’ Opening Credits You Love So Much Owe a Lot to David Fincher — Watch
Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, and Sarah Snook in Succession (2018)
“Succession” is one of HBO’s most acclaimed drama series and an Emmy frontrunner in 2020, and its popularity has been bolstered in part by its addicting opening credits sequence. The 90-second sequence is set to Nicholas Britell’s Emmy-winning original theme music and cuts together footage of the New York City skyline with home video footage of the Roy family. The grainy home videos remind viewers about the privilege and isolation of the Roy family at the start of each episode. It turns out this now-classic opening credits sequence owes a lot of credit David Fincher, who crafted virtually the same sequence to open his 1997 mystery thriller “The Game.” Both openings have been embedded in videos below.

An eagle-eyed Reddit user recently noticed the similarities between the “Succession” and “The Game” opening credits and brought it to the attention of viewers. Fincher’s 1997 movie begins with grainy home video footage...

Original, Daring And Audacious: The Cult Of David Cronenberg's "Crash" (1996)
By Steve Jankowiak

The term "cult" as it refers to film today has become little more than a marketing cliché. So very few films truly merit the designation. The defining attribute of any true cult film is the quality of transgression: visions and/or portrayals that defy established modes of discourse and/or codes of conduct. Crash achieves multiple transgressions in its 100-minute running time. Cronenberg's Crash is a faithful adaptation of the psychosexual novel by "New Wave" science-fiction author J. G. Ballard (1930-2009). It involves a cult whose members seek sexual gratification from being in car crashes. The transgressive subject matter of the source novel was leveraged by Cronenberg, who was philosophically predisposed to undertake the adaptation to film. In a subsequent introduction to his novel Ballard wrote that the modern world is ruled by fiction, a sentiment expressed by Cronenberg through the medium of Professor Brian O'Blivion and...

Silent Hill 3 Is Coming from Original Director
Christophe Gans at an event for Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
French filmmaker Christophe Gans has revealed his plans to develop two new horror movies based on video games, including another Silent Hill sequel and a Fatal Frame adaptation. Though Gans wrote and directed the original Silent Hill movie from 2006, he had no part in the 2012 sequel, passing the torch to new writer and director Michael J. Bassett.

Now, speaking with the French publication Allocine, Gans teases his return to the horror franchise by claiming he's already begun developing Silent Hill 3. Translated, here are Gans' comments from the interview.

"I have two horror film projects with Victor Hadida. I am working on the adaptation of the video game Project Zero (Fatal Frame). The film will take place in Japan. I certainly don't want to uproot the game from its Japanese haunted house setting. And we're also working on a new Silent Hill. The project will always be anchored in this atmosphere of a small American town,...

For the Man Who Has Everything: Close-Up on "The Game"
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. David Fincher's The Game (1997) is showing March 23 – April 22, 2019 in many countries around the world.“...from any given body of fictional text, nothing necessarily follows, and anything plausibly may.”—William H. Gass, “The Concept of Character in Fiction”What is The Game? “The eternal question,” an unnamed character intones, when he is asked this by its newest player, Nicholas van Orton (Michael Douglas), a middle-aged millionaire unaccustomed to befuddlement. Mainstream critics, who similarly dislike being perplexed, didn’t quite know what to make of the film when it premiered in 1997: responses were tepid and noncommittal, and, despite its $100 million box office draw, it has long been considered a minor work in David Fincher’s oeuvre, ensconced between the seminal Se7en (1995) and the belatedly-loved Fight Club (1999). It is a film that is at once subtle and silly, whose perfunctory...

‘Jackals’ DVD Review
Stars: Stephen Dorff, Deborah Kara Unger, Jonathon Schaech, Nick Roux, Chelsea Ricketts | Written by Jared Rivet | Directed by Kevin Greutert

n estranged family hires a cult deprogrammer to free their teenage son from the brainwashing he’s undergone at the hands of a vicious cult, but find themselves under siege when the cultists surround their cabin, demanding the boy back. A vicious battle unfolds, testing familial loyalties and unleashing a bloodbath in this suspense shocker, which is apparently based on a true 1980s story…

A riff on the Assault on Precinct 13 template of a building under siege, Kevin Greutert and co. try to bring something new to the all-too-familiar story, giving Jackals an extra depth with the cult deprogrammer angle. However the idea of a cult going to such lengths to retrieve a lost member basically seems like a throwaway storyline: an excuse for the “bad men” to attack our protagonists,...

First Trailer for Action Film 'Vengeance: A Love Story' with Nicolas Cage
"Leave us alone!" FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for a new action film titled Vengeance: A Love Story, adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel titled Rape: A Love Story. The story is about a local police officer who goes for vengeance when a local gang rapes a woman. The criminals find a way to walk away free thanks to a hot shot lawyer, and so the detective takes matters into his own hands. Nicolas Cage stars as John Dromoor, with a cast including Anna Hutchison, Talitha Bateman, Deborah Kara Unger, Don Johnson, Joshua Mikel, Rocco Nugent, Joe Ochterbeck, Carter Burch, and Charlene Tilton. This looks like a generic vengeance movie, especially with Nicolas Cage, but who knows. It's also interesting they removed the word "rape" from any description of this film, but it's definitely a major part of the plot. Here's the first trailer (+ new poster) for Johnny Martin...

Once You Enter the Cult You Can Never Leave in this Preview for Jackals
Kevin Greutert (The Strangers) and Jared Rivet are the filmmakers behind the horror film Jackals. This title, slated for a September, release involves a cult and a young boy. As well, Jackals stars: Jonathon Schaech, Deborah Kara Unger and Stephen Dorff. The film's first trailer and poster are hosted here. The poster for the film was developed from an early still. The still and graphic show frozen characters, masked in fog. That axe is not for chopping wood. And, the tagline: "sacrifices must be made" reminds viewers of the blood to be spilled. Director Greutert also helmed Saw: The Final Chapter. Jackals is slated for a September 1st release. This title will show through Video-on-demand and in theatres, on this date. The Definitive ‘What the F**k?’ Movies: 20-11
20. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Directed by: Terry Gilliam

So…drugs, right? Based on Hunter S. Thompson’s 1971 novel of the same title, Fear and Loathing stars Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, respectively. The pair is heading to Sin City, speeding through the Nevada desert, under the influence of mescaline. From there, the film is series a bizarre hallucinations seen through the eyes of Duke. So, we jump from hotel room to hotel room, all of the action a blur of what is happening and what really isn’t. Throughout the course of the film, Duke and/or Gonzo ingest the following drugs: mescaline, sunshine acid, diethyl ether, LSD, cocaine, and adenochrome (probably more). Duke – who is a Thompson stand-in – is supposed to be writing an article before heading back to Los Angeles, but tends to get sidetracked quite a bit. In...

Six Female Lead Choices Who Would’ve Made ‘Gravity’ a Better Film
As Alfonso Cuaron’s mega-hit Gravity continues to rack up praise and big box office dollars, it’s a good time to take a critical look at the weakest aspect of the film, which is the lead acting performance of Sandra Bullock.

It’s widely known that Cuaron’s first choice, Angelina Jolie, fell through and there were reported meetings with Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively, and Natalie Portman among other candidates, before Bullock was ultimately chosen.

These other contenders are clearly talented but they are still part of a group that could easily be called Hollywood Casting 101.

While the film’s financiers would disagree, Gravity is not a film that needed big stars, as the presence of George Clooney and Sandra Bullock is far less a contributor to its enormous success than the film’s suspense thriller concept and visually striking execution.

Obviously, a director on a big-budget...

Watch: David Lynch's Complete 1993 HBO Miniseries 'Hotel Room'
While David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" will always stand proudly as the moment the distinct filmmaker freaked out America on national network TV, once the show was done, he was finished working on the small screen format. Less known among his filmography is a detour to HBO in 1993 for the three part miniseries "Hotel Room." Well, thanks to the glory of the interwebs, you can now spend the rest of the day hiding out from your boss and watching it in full. Penned by Barry Gifford ("Wild At Heart" author, "Lost Highway") and Jay McInerney (“Bright Lights, Big City”), the miniseries chronicles the lives of folks passing through a hotel in 1969, 1992 and 1936 (in that order). It's apparently more straightforward than the kind of stuff Lynch is usually known for, but it's also touched by the director's unique sensibility. And the cast? As usual, a fantastic array of support with Harry Dean Stanton,...
