As far as iconic cinematic characters from the early 2000s go, Patrick Bateman from "American Psycho" is certainly up there. The film was adapted from the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name and became an early hit for Lionsgate. Christian Bale portrayed Patrick Bateman with great dedication, and it greatly helped his career. What lovers of the film and character may not know is that another actor played the role just two years later.
Casper Van Dien, known best as Johnny Rico from "Starship Troopers," got to put his stamp on Patrick Bateman in director Roger Avary's "The Rules of Attraction" in 2002, a movie also based on an Ellis novel. So, why is it that so many people are unaware of this other Bateman portrayal? That probably has more than a little something to do with the...

Tom DeLonge’s directorial debut, Monsters of California, emerges as a distinct cultural artifact, a film imaginable only from the mind of the Blink-182 musician and noted ufologist. It actively channels a specific American sensibility, one steeped in the sun-drenched skate parks, suburban anxieties, and anti-establishment posture of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The film is a direct dialogue with that era’s youth culture. Its story follows Dallas Edwards, a teenager living under the shadow of his government-agent father’s mysterious disappearance. When Dallas uncovers his father’s hidden research notebooks and technology, he, along with his perpetually high friend Toe and the more reserved Riley, embarks on a decidedly Californian quest.
Their search for answers about paranormal events feels less like a structured investigation and more like a rebellious, aimless road trip fueled by cheap beer and a deep-seated distrust of authority. The introduction deliberately aims for...

From Blink–182 frontman to filmmaker, Tom DeLonge continues his long-standing obsession with the paranormal in Monsters of California, a coming-of-age sci-fi adventure that lands on UK digital platforms from 7 July 2025. Co-written and directed by DeLonge alongside Ian Miller, the film is an unabashed homage to classic teen-driven genre fare, blending conspiracy theories, alien sightings and teenage recklessness into a fast-paced story with supernatural overtones.
Set under the sun-drenched skies of Southern California, the film follows Dallas Edwards, played by Jack Samson, whose adolescence is punctuated by grief, mischief and a consuming belief that extraterrestrial life is not only real but lurking dangerously close. Along with his closest friends Riley (Jared Scott) and Toe (Jack Lancaster), Dallas digs into a string of strange phenomena, convinced they’re connected to the disappearance of his fighter pilot father years earlier.
Their amateur investigations take a sudden turn when they discover remnants of their father’s work,...

"If this works, Satoshi, nothing will be the same." And it did work and now we're here. Anarchy Pictures has revealed an official trailer for Satoshi: The Movie, a new Bitcoin-inspired movie about the creation of the (in)famous cryptocurrency and its anonymous Japanese inventor Satoshi Nakamoto. Yes this is so cheesy because it's meant to be a first look teaser & pitch video for this movie which is pretty much made by Bitcoin fans for Bitcoin fans. "Freedom comes with a price" is the tagline which is a standard way of claiming that cryptocurrency is "free" from all government currency. Whatever. Satoshi is a scripted mystery-thriller from Anarchy Pictures exploring Bitcoin’s untold origin — not through speculation, but through story. Starring Casper Van Dien as Hal Finney, and Peter Shinkoda as Satoshi Nakamoto, directed by indie filmmaker Shaun Piccinino. "Satoshi reframes the question from who is Satoshi to why was...

Let’s go back to 1997. Titanic was sailing into box office history, Batman had nipples, and the internet was still something you had to yell at your mom to get off the phone to use. Kids like me were burning out their family’s VHS players with tapes of The Lost World, Liar Liar and Space Jam. It was a glorious stew of blockbusters, pop music, and dial-up tones. But nestled among the chaos was a movie so perfectly outrageous, so gleefully violent, and so misunderstood that it didn’t just fly over audiences’ heads—it practically dive-bombed them like a fleet of Arachnid kamikazes. That movie was Starship Troopers, baby. For kids who grew up in the late 90s, this was our RoboCop. Funny enough—it’s by the same exact madman director, Paul Verhoeven. If you were lucky enough to see this film on HBO or even in...

When Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" was released in 1997, people were baffled. It's about a futuristic society where humanity battles "bugs" -- an alien race from a far-off planet. It's about the thrill of signing on to the military, and then it's about the absolute horror of war. "Starship Troopers" is a vicious satire, meant to make visible the way that blind patriotism, propaganda-induced xenophobia, and unchecked military power lead to fascism and genocide.
Critics and audiences rejected the film, missing that the movie does not support the fervor with which its characters celebrate the destruction of an alien race. "I was using [Leni] Riefenstahl to point out, or so I thought, that these heroes and heroines were straight out of Nazi propaganda," Verhoeven later told The Guardian. "No one saw it at the time ... I thought Neil Patrick Harris arriving on the set in an SS uniform might clear it up.

Sony’s surprise CES announcement in January left the Helldivers community picking their jaws off the floor. The gaming giant confirmed what many had speculated: Super Earth’s finest would be making the jump from consoles to the silver screen.
But what exactly do we know about the Helldivers 2 movie adaptation? Between official statements, developer insights, and community speculation, the picture remains frustratingly incomplete.
Like a Helldiver waiting for extraction in squid territory, fans are left scanning the horizon for any sign of what’s to come.
The announcement that launched a thousand hellpods
The news broke during Sony’s CES 2025 presentation when PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash casually dropped what might be the most anticipated gaming adaptation since The Last of Us:

Harmony Korine's 2013 film "Spring Breakers" is a time capsule of the early 2010s -- a time when James Franco was still a big-name movie star and Skrillex's brostep bass wobbles soundtracked all of the cool parties in town. Starring Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, the film follows four college students who turn to a life of crime after meeting Alien (Franco), a drug dealer who convinces them to wear pink balaclavas, carry machine guns, and dance to Britney Spears power ballads.
Considering that Harmony Korine was banned from "The David Letterman Show" for causing mischief, it makes sense that he'd create a movie about renegades wreaking havoc. That said, "Spring Breakers" also taps into the universal feeling of being young, carefree, and wanting the party to last forever -- themes most of us can relate to, even if we didn't grow up listening to...

When Arrowhead’s co-op shooter exploded onto the scene last year, gamers immediately recognized its spiritual connection to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 cult classic. The gray-and-black armor, the rounded helmets, the endless waves of insectoid enemies—the visual parallels between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers are undeniable.
But Super Earth’s war against the Terminids runs deeper than mere aesthetic homage. The connections between these two franchises extend far beyond power armor and bug guts, reaching into the realm of biting social commentary that both properties execute with gleeful abandon.
More than just bugs and guns: the shared DNA of managed democracy
The most fascinating parallel between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers isn’t the combat—it’s the mockery of ultra-nationalism that permeates both worlds.
While Verhoeven’s film was initially misunderstood as endorsing fascism, time revealed its brilliant satire of militaristic propaganda. Helldivers 2 cranks this satire to eleven, with its “Managed Democracy” and comically over-the-top patriotism.

Writer-director Brian Skiba’s Gunslingers is the filmmaker’s second western to reach theaters this year, following Guns of Redemption just last month, and it feels no less hastily assembled. While the cast of Stephen Dorff, Nicolas Cage, and Heather Graham alone is an upgrade over that of the earlier film’s, there’s little else to keep Gunslingers from blurring together with Guns of Redemption, or any other modern western of its ilk that was always destined to disappear into the limbo of VOD.
Thomas Keller (Dorff) is a wanted man on the run in the Kentucky wilderness. Looking to put his violent past behind him, he arrives at the town of Redemption, which, as its name bluntly suggests, is a haven for outlaws wanting to start their lives over. With the help of the town’s reformed criminal populace, Thomas fakes his own capture and execution, in order...

Since the late 70s, the mecha genre of the anime industry has been ruled by only one franchise, and that is none other than Mobile Suit Gundam, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The series initially entertained Japan and then became world-class franchise that to this day is considered to be one of the greatest anime series focusing on topics like military and science fiction.
Over the years, the franchise has introduced many new spin-offs and sequel stories that varied from the previous one in more than one aspect. However, the one thing that has stayed constant within every Mobile Suit Gundam story is the iconic Mobile Suits, which worked as the humanoid combat vehicles for the different characters within the series.

“Starship Troopers” are back. And they’ve found the man to lead them into battle.
Neill Blomkamp has been hired by Columbia Pictures to write and direct a new version of the story, this time going back to the original story by Robert A. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.
The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.
“Starship Troopers” had been adapted once before, in 1997, by “RoboCop” director Paul Verhoeven and writer Edward Neumeier for TriStar Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. That version leaned into the political satire, full of fascistic imagery and jingoistic propagandizing. That hard R-rated film starred Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico,...

In the winter of 1997, Dutch auteur Paul Verhoeven somehow managed to sneak Starship Troopers, an eye-popping satirisation of Robert A. Heinlein's eponymous 1959 man-vs-alien-bug book, through the studio system. Like much of Verhoeven's oeuvre, Starship Troopers — the third part of the Dutchman's 'sci-fi trilogy', also comprising Robocop and Total Recall— was widely misunderstood upon release (despite a healthy $121 million box office showing), only going on to be critically reappraised after garnering a cult following in the years that followed. Now, THR is reporting that 28 years after Verhoeven did his part, Chappie and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is gearing up to do his with a brand new adaptation of Heinlein's hugely influential novel for Sony. Would you like to know more?
Genre aficionado Blomkamp will be directing this new take on the conflict between humanity and alien 'Arachnids'/'Bugs' from a self-penned script, and will produce the film alongside longtime collaborator and wife Terri Tatchell.

Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the guy who gave us ‘District 9,’ a movie that mixed aliens and real-world grit in a way that stuck with people. Now he’s diving into Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I’m already curious about what he’ll do with it.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie Starship Troopers pit a futuristic military unit up against insectoid creatures, with two live action sequels, two animated movies, and various video games following in its wake. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a new movie for several years now, and The Hollywood Reporter brings us an exciting update on that today.
According to the site, Columbia Pictures has hired Neill Blomkamp to write and direct the new Starship Troopers movie, which will re-adapt Robert A. Johnny Rico is coming back to kill some more bugs.
Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, setting District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein.
Blomkamp will also produce the feature alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote the South African filmmaker’s District 9 and 2015 outing, Chappie.
Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.
While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

Prolific filmmaker Brian Skiba, who went from directing the slick action/thriller Pursuit, starring John Cusack, to the upcoming twisted Nicolas Cage western, Gunslingers, is ready to call it: Hollywood is in the midst of a Western resurgence. In a recent interview with MovieWeb to discuss the other western he recently directed, Guns of Redemption, Skiba said:
“Absolutely… there's a resurgence going on. You know, obviously all of Taylor Sheridan's stuff [Yellowstone, 1923, 1883, Landman] is really resurging. American Primeval on Netflix surged. I think people enjoyed Kevin Costner's film [Horizon]. Unfortunately, the format wasn't working. He should have probably just told the whole story all at once instead of trying to spread it out over three movies. But it was still a beautiful film and a lot of people responded to it.”

Revenge, reclamation, and resurrection fuel Guns of Redemption, a sharply focused post-Civil War tale about a weary soldier hoping for solace yet destined for struggle. Director Brian Skiba’s (The Gunslinger) intentionally straightforward storytelling hones in on four key characters, reigning in any excess. Between its solid cast, gritty action sequences, and alluring American West backdrop, the film intrigues but is several bullets short of being an epic Western.
The film centers around a Civil War veteran named Luke (Casper Van Dien of Starship Troopers and Sleepy Hollow) who hopes to fade away in a small town. Fate has other plans as he’s soon drawn back into chaos when he tries to rescue two women from a traveling brothel run by a sinister fellow named General Bork (Jeff Fahey). That doesn’t end well, and the aftermath becomes the main focus of the film, along with Luke's determination to get revenge.

That doesn’t end well, and the aftermath becomes the main focus of the film, along with Luke's determination to get revenge.

"Power Rangers" was not just one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the 1990s, but it was also part of a wave of shows that made Japanese pop culture huge in the U.S. together with "Pokémon," "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z." The show, created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy in collaboration with Shotaro Ishinomori, was mostly composed of reused footage from Ishinomori's hugely influential and long-running tokusatsu series "Super Sentai." The series revolves around a team of youths trained to morph into superheroes known as Rangers, who fight evildoers and occasionally pilot giant mecha called Zords (which can combine to form even bigger mecha). As /Film decided in our previous reassessment, "Power Rangers" is good, actually, even setting our nostalgia aside.
Part of what made the show interesting in its early years was that the first six seasons of "Power Rangers" told a serialized story. This started...

Starship Troopers (1997), directed by Paul Verhoeven, is a sci-fi movie about Earth fighting a war against giant alien bugs. The film uses extreme violence and nudity to satirize military propaganda, fascism, and nationalism.
Although it received mixed reviews when it first came out, it has since become a cult classic and is seen as a sharp commentary on war and society.
The cast includes Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico, a star athlete turned soldier, Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores, Rico’s fellow infantryman, Denise Richards as Carmen, Jake Busey as Ace Levy, Neil Patrick Harris as Carl Jenkins, Clancy Brown as Sergeant Zim, and Michael Ironside as Jean Rasczak, a teacher-turned-squad leader.
Denise Richards played Carmen, an aspiring starship pilot and Johnny Rico’s girlfriend in Starship Troopers. Despite the movie’s focus on gender equality, Richards was asked to do a topless scene, which she quickly turned down.

25 years ago, Tim Burton released Sleepy Hollow, his eighth feature, and by far his scariest. A retelling of Washington Irving's classic early American ghost story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" starring Burton's frequent leading man Johnny Depp, it marked a significant shift in the director's evolution, pushing the envelope of onscreen violence both in his movies, and mainstream movies in general. While the beloved director has always used plenty of grotesque and dark imagery in his films, Sleepy Hollow is the closest he's come to making a true horror movie.
Since making his feature debut with Pee Wee's Big Adventure in 1985, Burton has consistently found ways to remake the Hollywood blockbuster in his own image. His third feature, 1989's Batman, was a huge success that helped pave the way for superheroes in the multiplex, while still bearing the recognizable hallmarks of its young director. He cashed in...

Starship Troopers is the perfect definition of an originally misunderstood cult classic that has gone on to build a dedicated fanbase since its release in 1997. Now actor Casper Van Dien, who played Johnny Rico in the movie, is desperate to see the franchise get a revival as a streaming TV series. Van Dien recently shared his enthusiasm for returning to the action franchise, suggesting, not for the first time, that it holds untapped potential for further exploration that would be perfect for a long-form series.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Van Dien explained that he believes that a modern series could explore the universe in ways that the original film couldnt due to its format. After noting that there is a lot of commentary in the movie that is still very relevant today, he said:

Whether media fans know it or not, they have been enjoying the timbre of Clancy Brown's trademark voice for decades. From live-action movies and television to animated classics and even video game voice-overs, viewers would be hard-pressed not to have consumed some sort of content with the performer.
In many ways, all of Brown's performances are iconic. Each demonstrated the talent and prowess the actor brings to his roles. But there are a few, of course, that stick out the most. Whether it be due to the waves his works made in pop culture or the performances themselves, there are some of Brown's roles that stand out from the rest.

Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi action cult classic Starship Troopers is now streaming for free on Pluto TV. The iconic film, based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name, debuted exactly twenty-seven years ago.
Written by Edward Neumeier and set in the 23rd century, Starship Troopers follows teenager Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside also star in the movie. Starship Troopers' development started in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After noticing story similarities with Heinlein's novel, producer Jon Davison suggested converting the script into a version of Starship Troopers to garner greater interest from studio executives.

The moniker of 'icon' is bandied about pretty readily in Hollywood these days, but when it comes to James Dean, the star of Giant, East Of Eden, and Rebel Without A Cause who tragically died at just 24 years of age in 1955, it's one that's well deserved. And as our cultural fascination with the actor continues to endure, so too do new works based on his life. Now, per THR's reporting, it looks like the latest is set to be Surviving James Dean, a movie from writer-director Guy Guido based on William Bast's eponymous 2006 memoir.
Bast's second book about Dean having already been his close friend's first biographer way back in 1956, Surviving James Dean offers a more personal insight into the duo's relationship. Bast's book chronicles the two men's evolving bond as they went from UCLA roommates to close friends to lovers, their romantic ties kept quiet at the...

Guilty pleasure movies are often misunderstood gems that deserve more appreciation and respect. Starship Troopers, Batman Forever, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are underrated classics. John Carter, Cars 2, and The Lone Ranger offer unique stories and themes that challenge the conventions of their genres.
The term "guilty pleasure" is often used to describe a movie that someone can only enjoy in secret, for fear of what the wider public thinks of the movie. Often, this means that a guilty pleasure movie is one that is typically looked down upon. However, I would argue that guilty pleasure is a term that is thrown around far too often when discussing unloved movies. But what if these guilty pleasures aren't actually guilty? What if they're just actually good movies?
From the vastness of space to the dust of the Wild West, some of these so-called "guilty pleasures" are actually truly great movies.
