Matthew McConaughey once lost out on a career-defining role in James Cameron’s Titanic, and the reason why has now been revealed. 1997’s Titanic is still a masterpiece over 25 years later, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet playing two lovers of different social classes, Jack and Rose, as they are caught in the disaster of the ship’s maiden voyage.

Titanic became a cultural phenomenon, generating $2.264 billion at the worldwide box office and an impressive legacy for DiCaprio and Winslet. However, there were plenty of other actors who were considered for Titanic’s cast. Matthew McConaughey and other A-listers, like Paul Rudd, Ethan Hawke, and Christian Bale, were all rumored for the lead role, but ultimately lost out.

According to Puck, which provides an excerpt from Titanic producer Jon Landau’s memoir The Bigger Picture, Matthew McConaughey lost the lead role in Titanic because he didn’t want to drop his Southern drawl.

According to a newly revealed excerpt from late producer Jon Landau’s upcoming memoir, McConaughey gave an incredible audition and even won over Kate Winslet with “his presence and charm”, who had already been cast as Rose (via People). But things didn’t go so smoothly with director James Cameron.

When Cameron asked Matthew McConaughey to “try it a different way”, without the accent, the actor reportedly declined, saying, “No. That was pretty good. Thanks.” And just like that, McConaughey came inches close to playing Jack in Titanic, until losing the billion-dollar role over his accent.

The 75-year-old filmmaker wrote, directed and produced the 2006 rom-com, which starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black.
