The Amazing Spider-Man gave him his first blockbuster lead, and fans were eager to embrace his version of the web-slinger. The sequel dropped in 2014, setting up what seemed like a promising trilogy.

Things Weren’t As Heroic For Andrew Garfield Behind The Scenes

Andrew Garfield admitted the experience hit him hard, saying, “How could I ever imagine that it was going to be a pure experience? There are millions of dollars at stake, and that’s what guides the ship. It was a big awakening, and it hurt.”

But behind the scenes, the casting could have taken a very different turn. Kate Winslet’s Chemistry Test: The Actor with the Southern Drawl

A post shared by Matthew McConaughey (@officiallymcconaughey)

Back in the casting days of James Cameron’s 1997 masterpiece, the search for the perfect Jack Dawson was intense. With Kate Winslet already cast as Rose, the director and producers invited several promising actors to read with her. AI Is Replacing Voice Artists in India — and There Are No Local Laws to Stop It
Image
In 2023, when the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes shut down Hollywood for four months, seeking protection from, among other things, artificial intelligence (AI), many in India wondered why nothing of the sort was happening there. One of the concerns of the movement was how big studios were going to use AI to replicate likenesses of artists in ways that could be exploitative. The strike ended in a three-year agreement that guaranteed fair pay and included provisions that required performers to approve how their voices were used.

Nothing of the sort has happened in India since. But there’s a small, niche section of the entertainment industry where the effects of AI are being intensely felt: the dubbing and voiceover sector. Gigs have already started to disappear. As for the nature of work, these are strange times in the Indian industry. If you are a dubbing artist,...

Matthew McConaughey Lost Titanic Role Due to Southern Drawl
Image
Matthew McConaughey once lost out on a career-defining role in James Cameron’s Titanic, and the reason why has now been revealed. 1997’s Titanic is still a masterpiece over 25 years later, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet playing two lovers of different social classes, Jack and Rose, as they are caught in the disaster of the ship’s maiden voyage.

Titanic became a cultural phenomenon, generating $2.264 billion at the worldwide box office and an impressive legacy for DiCaprio and Winslet. However, there were plenty of other actors who were considered for Titanic’s cast. Matthew McConaughey and other A-listers, like Paul Rudd, Ethan Hawke, and Christian Bale, were all rumored for the lead role, but ultimately lost out.

According to Puck, which provides an excerpt from Titanic producer Jon Landau’s memoir The Bigger Picture, Matthew McConaughey lost the lead role in Titanic because he didn’t want to drop his Southern drawl.

Julianne Nicholson on being nominated for comedy and drama: ‘It’s fun sometimes to go to work and laugh and not be tearing your heart out’
Image
If there were an award for the best character names on television, Julianne Nicholson should make room on her mantel. As Sinatra on Paradise and Dance Mom on Hacks, Nicholson simultaneously thrilled and terrified us this season.

And Television Academy voters took notice — recognizing her with that rare feat of twin nominations for both drama (supporting actress) and comedy (guest actress) in the same season.

“It’s still a pinch me moment,” says Nicholson. “When it does cross my mind, it makes me very happy.” The actress, who won an Emmy back in 2021 for her work on Mare of Easttown opposite Kate Winslet, stopped by our Gold Derby studio to talk about getting to play a villain, learning those dance moves, and what to expect in Season 2 of Paradise.

You had both the scariest and probably the funniest roles on TV at the same time.

Matthew McConaughey ‘lost role of Jack Dawson in Titanic after refusing to take direction during his audition’
Matthew McConaughey is said to have lost the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic after refusing to take direction during his audition with director James Cameron. The 55-year-old actor, known for his Texan drawl and easy charm, auditioned opposite Kate Winslet during early casting sessions for the 1997 blockbuster, and the claim he botched his try-out for the hit movie comes from producer Jon Landau’s posthumous memoir, The Bigger Picture, which was excerpted in journalist Matthew Belloni’s newsletter What I’m Hearing.Jon is said to have written: “We brought (Matthew) in to do a scene with Kat“You want to check for chemistry, not just how people look on film but how they interact. Kate was taken with Matthew, his presence and charm. Matthew did the scene with the (Southern) drawl.”According to Jon, after Matthew’s initial reading, filmmaker James, now 70, asked him to perform the scene again without the Southern accent.

James Cameron
Why Matthew McConaughey lost out on starring in James Cameron’s Titanic
James Cameron
It’s hard to imagine James Cameron’s Titanic without the iconic pairing of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as Rose and Jack, but in another world, the role of Jack could have been played by Matthew McConaughey.

In his upcoming memoir, The Bigger Picture, the late Jon Landau recalled McConaughey’s audition for the part of Jack. Although the actor was well-liked, with Winslet said to be “taken” with his “presence and charm,” he refused to drop his signature Texas drawl.

“We brought him in to do a scene with Kate [Winslet],” Landau wrote. “You want to check for chemistry — not just how people look on film, but how they interact. Matthew did the scene with the drawl. ‘That’s great,’ said Jim [Cameron]. ‘Now let’s try it a different way.’ Matthew said, ‘No. That was pretty good. Thanks.’ Let’s just say, that was it for McConaughey.“

‘Peaky Blinders’ Fans Shouldn’t Miss This Gritty “Spiritual Successor” With 90% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The world of crime and politics during the early 20th century was brought to the fore in an exceptionally gifted way in Peaky Blinders, as the street based gang led by Tommy Shelby, rose to prominence. The series based on the street gang which dominated Birmingham after World War I already has a successor show set in nearby London. The BBC One series, Dope Girls, follows the same pattern as its Cillian Murphy-led predecessor, focusing on crime, politics, and gangs. The series which only premiered in February 2025, is a beloved of critics, holding a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% from 10 reviews.

While Dope Girls explores the same gritty underbelly of urban life in England in the aftermath of World War I just like Peaky Blinders, the successor goes a step further as it approaches the world from the lens of women and the underprivileged, giving an entirely different perspective from...

Matthew McConaughey Lost Titanic’s Jack Role Over One Very Specific Refusal
Image
Did you know, James Cameron‘s 1997 blockbuster, Titanic, almost starred Matthew McConaughey, until he allegedly lost out on the role of Jack Dawson? Well, turns out, the Interstellar actor was replaced with Leonardo DiCaprio after he refused to drop his Southern accent.

According to a newly revealed excerpt from late producer Jon Landau’s upcoming memoir, McConaughey gave an incredible audition and even won over Kate Winslet with “his presence and charm”, who had already been cast as Rose (via People). But things didn’t go so smoothly with director James Cameron.

When Cameron asked Matthew McConaughey to “try it a different way”, without the accent, the actor reportedly declined, saying, “No. That was pretty good. Thanks.” And just like that, McConaughey came inches close to playing Jack in Titanic, until losing the billion-dollar role over his accent.

4 Years After HBO's Best Small Town Crime Drama Ended, a Potential Season 2 Is Finally Being Addressed
Image
It has become a common feat for miniseries to be released, telling stories which are slightly too large for a feature film and too short for a full blown multi-season series. Over the past decade or so, a number of these shows which one could arguably call masterpieces, have premiered. One of them is HBO's crime series, Mare of Easttown. The miniseries premiered in April 2021 to critical reception holding an impressive critic score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is not surprising that there has been somewhat of a clamor for a second season since then. However, one of the stars of the show, that served arguably as a replacement for True Detective, has offered a disappointing update regarding a potential second season.

Over the course of its run, Julianne Nicholson played Lori Ross, the childhood bestfriend of the series protagonist, Mare. Since her time on Mare of Easttown, Nicholson has...

Kate Winslet in The Orange British Academy Film Awards: Red Carpet (2010)
Sense and Sensibility review – blue-chip cast decorates Emma Thompson’s pleasurable Austen adaptation
Kate Winslet in The Orange British Academy Film Awards: Red Carpet (2010)
Thirty years later, this richly enjoyable film is back with its quality lineup including Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant alongside Thompson herself

Emma Thompson won a screenplay Oscar for this buoyant, vibrant, richly enjoyable adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Released in 1995, it was directed by Ang Lee and is a movie with the pleasures of a golden age studio picture of the kind made by William Wyler. It was the second half of Thompson’s Oscar double – she won her first one in 1993 for acting in Howards End – and she is still the only person in Academy Award history to win for acting and writing.

With marvellous lightness and gaiety, Thompson found a response to Austen’s comic register, expertly marrying it up to the romance, and 1995 now looks like the golden age of Austen adaptation, having also seen the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice on television...

Ghosts of Hiroshima: James Cameron Is Afraid of His Next Movie After Avatar: Fire and Ash
Image
James Cameron, the man who dove into the wreck of the Titanic and waged war in Pandora, now confesses he’s afraid. Not of failure. Not of scale. But of the terrifying truth at the heart of his next film, Ghosts of Hiroshima. The acclaimed director revealed in an exclusive conversation with DiscussingFilm that adapting Charles Pellegrino’s harrowing new book might be the single most daunting creative endeavor of his storied career.

This might be the most challenging film I ever make. I don’t 100% have my strategy fully in place [right now] for how I want to see it, for how I want to shield people from the horror, but still be honest.

With Ghosts of Hiroshima, Cameron steps outside the safety of fantasy and science fiction. Gone are the blue-skinned heroes and immersive worlds of Avatar. In their place: human ashes, melted shadows, and the searing screams of survivors.

Here’s What Happened to the Insane, Non-‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ FX Sitcom That Premiered 20 Years Ago Today
Image
When people say things like “they could never make something like that today,” they’re usually talking about an early aughts movie that did more overt racism than it did comedy, with a sort of nostalgia that implies they miss laughing at things that were more offensive than they were clever. But sometimes, “they could never make something like that today,” applies to the kind of dark humor that most executives are genuinely afraid of in an era when everyone equates “criticism” to “cancellation.” That’s definitely the case with Starved, an FX original sitcom that only survived seven episodes 20 years ago.

It premiered on August 4, 2005, right before It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It was supposed to be FX’s comedy hour, but the network only renewed Sunny, not Starved. And while Sunny has certainly excelled in pushing the boundaries and even offended people sometimes with the downright despicable behavior of the gang,...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet's post-Titanic reunion is now streaming for free. Their original collaboration was written and directed by James Cameron, blending real-life events with fictional drama. Titanic was a landmark movie in many ways. It was the most expensive movie ever made at the time, with a production budget of $200 million, but wholly paid off by making $2.264 billion at the box office, the first film to ever surpass the billion-dollar mark, and was the highest-grossing movie of all time until Cameron's own Avatar took the title in 2010.

Critically acclaimed, Titanic received 14 Academy Award nominations and took home 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, tying the record set by Ben-Hur (1959). Among its many accomplishments, Titanic also propelled DiCaprio and Winslet to stardom, and the duo shared the...

I Still Can’t Get Over Matthew McConaughey’s Hilarious ‘King of the Hill’ Cameo
Image
Matthew McConaughey‘s hysterical role in the animated drama King of the Hill is still remembered by fans. No one can ever get over the actor’s charm and Texas drawl vocals that he brought to life in Rad Thibodeaux in the show’s Season 3, Episode 14, ‘The Wedding of Bobby Hill.’

The role fit the actor perfectly as Rad is shown as a smooth-talking but ultimately self-centred concert promoter, much like the actor himself. In an interview (via Interview Magazine) alongside actor Glenn Powell, Matthew McConaughey once reflected on his career about saying yes or not to certain roles, quoting,

“I’ve said no to things, where I’m like, “Am I being too safe, or am I ferociously chasing what I want?” Because sometimes you can get paralyzed in the noes.”

He further stated,

“I’ve had plenty of times in my career where I’m like, “I don...

Nancy Meyers Says Apple’s Holiday Series Is “News to Me”
Nancy Meyers
Nancy Meyers woke up on August 1 to find social media alive with headlines claiming Apple TV+ is turning her 2006 rom-com The Holiday into a six-episode limited series—and that she is not involved. She answered in an Instagram Story: “News to me. Imagine my surprise,” attaching a screenshot of the report first carried by Deadline.

According to the trade item and follow-up coverage, the streamer has tapped Sweetpea creator Krissie Ducker to write and executive-produce the project, with actor-writer Rob Delaney on the script team. Early notes indicate the show will keep the film’s house-swap premise but introduce new characters and settings rather than revisit Iris and Amanda. Apple is negotiating with Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner to board as producer, though no deal has closed.

Meyers’ public distance from the project echoes her 2022 dismissal of sequel rumours and underscores continuing questions about creative rights when studios revive...

'Avatar' Creator, 70, Shares an Update on Whether He Will Direct Future Movies
Image
As another installment of the global hit sci-fi film series Avatar bows into theaters this December, director James Cameron has reflected on his place in the future of the franchise. He still has two more movies in the Avatar universe to make, and given the significant time it takes to make each movie, there have been concerns that he might not be physically capable of seeing all the films to the end. Cameron turns 71 soon, but that won't slow him down — at least that's the plan. He plans to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I’m healthy, I'm good to go," he told Empire when they asked if there was a possibility he could hand over the day-to-day duties of making the remaining films to another director.

Still, the future is unpredictable, and Cameron has thought about it. "I’m not going to rule it out,...

James Cameron's $5.2B Sci-Fi Blockbuster Franchise Is Resurrected Thanks To A Major Trailer Drop
Image
An epic James Cameron franchise is dominating on streaming after a new trailer dropped online. Cameron announced himself as a major force in the world of Hollywood with the release of 1984's The Terminator. He then reaffirmed his status with Aliens in 1986.

Since this acclaimed Alien sequel, Cameron has continued to excel as a filmmaker, often working in the realm of sci-fi. After releasing The Abyss in 1989, a movie that has since become a cult classic of sorts, he returned to helm Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, which is widely considered one of the best sequels of all time.

It was in 1997, however, that Cameron reached new heights, with Titanic becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. The hit film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, held onto this title for 12 years.

The filmmaker that eventually beat Titanic's record-breaking box office was, of course, Cameron himself. In 2009, the director released a groundbreaking sci-fi,...
