Before landing her first Emmy nomination for Nobody Wants This, Kristen Bell earned out-of-this-world praise for her breakout role on Veronica Mars.
Rob Thomas created the Upn mystery series that starred Bell as the titular high school student who works at her dad’s private investigation agency after her best friend, Lilly, is murdered. The cast included Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III and Enrico Colantoni, with Amanda Seyfried recurring as Lilly.
In an interview last year timed to Veronica Mars’ 20th anniversary, Bell said that the show “allowed me to discover who I am and what I’m good at.” She also deemed it “the hardest job I have had to date” and explained, “That was before the union was enforcing any real rules, and we were there for 17 hours a day. … It was just such a physically demanding shoot.”

One of the biggest shadows cast over the original trilogy of Naked Gun movies is the Zucker brothers casting of O.J. Simpson in the role of Nordberg. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for the Zuckers to put sports figures in some supporting roles, as they also used athletes like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a classic role in Airplane. However, Simpson played somewhat of a prominent character, and with the new incarnation of the spoof film addressing how the characters are the offspring of the originals, this left the writers with something hanging.
Director Akiva Schaffer wrote the film with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Gregor and Mand have recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter, where they talk about addressing the elephant in the room. THR asks what their discussion was like in approaching the issue and Mand explains,

More than 2,300 members of the Writers Guild of America West and East, including no shortage of heavy hitters, have signed the union’s open letter decrying the Trump administration’s “recent threats to the free press.”
“We are members of the Writers Guild of America who speak with one voice to decry the dangerous and escalating attacks on the First Amendment, independent media, and the free press,” the letter reads in part. “[Trump] regularly calls for the cancellation of news and entertainment television shows that criticize him in late-night and, most recently, The View.”
It ends with the ominous line, “This period in American life will not last forever, and when it’s over the world will remember who had the courage to speak out.” Read the letter and list of signatories in full below.

If you like your coffee black, like your men. If you speak jive. If you know a hospital is a building with patients in it. Then it sounds, to us, like you know exactly what kind of movie you like, and you'reready for the absurd genius that is Airplane!, now streaming on Pluto TV. Released in 1980, Airplane! is more than just a spoof — it’s one of the sharpest, silliest, and most relentlessly quotable comedies ever made. Written and directed by the iconic trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (collectively known as Zaz), the film is a near shot-for-shot remake of the 1957 drama Zero Hour!, only reimagined as pure comedy. And not just a comedy — it's the comedy, the one that redefined what cinematic parody could be.
The genius of Airplane! isn’t just in its jokes (though there are thousands) — it’s in how straight they’re delivered.

It’s very tough to pick out the most accomplished member of MTV’s vast Real World/Road Rules/Challenge universe, considering Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, podcast giant Theo Von, and WWE icon Mike “The Miz” Mizanin all got their start there. Nobody fit the role better than André the Giant as Fezzik in The Princess Bride. Known for being one of the premiere superstars in professional wrestling, André was recruited to play the oversized sidekick to Wallace Shawn’s Vizzini in what seems like a no-brainer choice. After all, at 7’4”, André was basically a real-life giant. But a certain Hollywood star was also vying for the role: Liam Neeson. It’s just too bad he’s so short…
When it came time to casting Fezzik in The Princess Bride, Rob Reiner and his casting director, Jane Jenkins, were tasked with finding someone who could actually come across as a giant. So when Liam Neeson entered the room, he – who stands well over six feet, a desirable height by many measures – just wasn’t tall enough. As Neeson recently recalled, “It’s very true. The athlete that will be center stage on the cover of NBA 2K26 has finally been revealed. This year, for the standard edition cover, one of the best players in recent memory will be gracing the cover.
According to a press release, three-time NBA all-star and the 2024-2025 season Mvp, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, will be this year's cover athlete. In a stunning move, the Buss family has agreed to sell a majority of the Los Angeles Lakers to Twg Global CEO Mark Walter in a deal that values the team at $10 billion.
ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, who broke the news, reports that Jeanie Buss will continue to serve as governor of the team after the sale. The governor serves as the representative for the team on the NBA’s league of governors.
Walter also owns significant stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB team, the Sparks WNBA team and Cadillac’s F1 team, among other assets. The $10 billion value is a record for an NBA team (the Boston Celtics sold earlier this year for more than $6 billion), and substantially above what most private estimates valued the team at.

The NBC jury has reached a verdict, your honor, and it is bad news for Night Court fans. The reboot of the classic Reinhold Weege sitcom was firmly on the bubble for the network after drawing a more modest audience than its first two seasons under Dan Rubin. In the end, Melissa Rauch will not be returning to the bench as Judge Abby Stone for Season 4, as the series has been cancelled per Deadline. The news comes just days after Season 3 served out the final two episodes of its 18-episode sentence with a bombshell reveal that changed everything for Judge Stone.
Night Court kicked off on a white-hot note when it debuted in 2023. According to Nielsen ratings at the time, the reboot had been NBC's biggest comedy premiere since 2017, only being surpassed by the reboot of Will & Grace. Since then, the series settled into a groove, bringing zany courtroom...

While most legacy sequels to beloved movies find a way to incorporate original cast members, that was unlikely to happen in Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun.
Leslie Nielsen, who played Lt. Frank Drebin, passed away in 2010. George Kennedy, aka Captain Ed Hocken, died in 2016. And since Priscilla Presley has publicly claimed that she would turn down any invitations to return to the franchise, that really only left O.J. Simpson.
Although he died shortly before filming began, there was seemingly no attempt to involve Simpson in the project, for obvious reasons. But that doesn’t mean that the movie won’t include some references to the notorious accused murderer.
The first teaser trailer for 2025’s The Naked Gun just dropped. It finds Liam Neeson’s Frank Drebin (the son of Nielson’s character) brutalizing a gang of bank robbers while improbably dressed as a schoolgirl, complete with a Mission: Impossible-style rubber mask.

It's considered something of a footnote now, but Robin Williams' last TV credit before his death was for "The Crazy Ones," a David E. Kelley-created single-camera sitcom that aired from September 2013 to April 2014. "The Crazy Ones" was notable in that it was Williams' first time headlining a TV series since the broadcast of "Mork and Mindy" (with Pam Dawber) over three decades earlier. Williams had spent the bulk of his career working in standup or starring in movies, often gaining a great deal of acclaim for his performances. He was nominated for Oscars for "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society," and "The Fisher King" before finally winning for his very generous turn in "Good Will Hunting." His comedy albums also won him multiple Grammys, while his standup specials netted him two Emmys.
Williams would happily have made a joke about how he is not an Egot, but a mere Ego.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.
“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

However, despite the buzz surrounding the venture, Netflix has officially squashed any hope for the documentary to air, instead announcing an entirely new direction for Prince content.

Although Jeopardy! assembles three of the brightest and most intelligent people in America on one stage, there is still room for awkward gaffes during game time. The beloved trivia game show asks a lot out of its contestants, such as tapping the buzzer within a fraction of a second, phrasing their answers in the form of a question, and making wagers on their earnings. The intensity of the competition and the limelight of the Alex Trebek Stage are sure to cause blunders, including awkwardly amusing blunders that are as funny as anything on television. There's enough pressure to make anyone crack, including six-time NBA champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in one episode of Celebrity Jeopardy! Abdul-Jabbar's hilarious slip-up involving a clue about the MPAA ratings for movies is a cringe-inducing moment that veered the family-friendly show into obscene territory.

Jim Abrahams, one of the creative minds behind such comedies as Airplane!, three Naked Gun movies, and the TV series Police Squad!, died November 26, 2024, at his Santa Monica, California home, Deadline reports. He was 80 years old.
Abrahams was born May 10, 1944, in Shorewood, Wi. He grew up with the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and the trio often referred to as "Zaz" got their start in Hollywood with The Kentucky Fried Movie. Written by Zaz and directed by John Landis, the film consists of a series of crude, sometimes offensive vignettes something which, by modern standards, could never be made today. Abrahams and the Zucker brothers appeared in the movie alongside James Bond actor George Lazenby, Donald Sutherland, and The Incredible Hulk star Bill Bixby, among others.
The trio got their big break in 1980 with Airplane!, a send-up of '70s disaster flicks like Airport and The Poseidon Adventure. Starring Leslie Nielsen,...

Jim Abrahams, part of the writing-directing-producing team behind such comedy touchstones as Airplane!, the Naked Gun films, and Police Squad!, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 80.
His son, Joseph Abrahams, confirmed the news to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter.
Along with brothers David and Jerry Zucker, Abrahams also was behind laugh-inducing — and often intentionally groan-inducing — comedy films including Top Secret! and the Top Gun spoofs Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux. Students of the Mel Brooks School of Anything for a Laugh, the trio paired absurd situations with deadpan lines and fueled Leslie Nielsen’s unlikely rise to leading man after 30 years in the business.
The trio got their big-screen start writing The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), a series of decidedly un-pc vignettes directed by John Landis that ranged from silly to uproarious to “what the hell?!” and back. Sample: A TV news anchor deadpans from...

If you're even a little bit familiar with "The Big Bang Theory," you know that it's always been sold as a "show about nerds" — so it makes sense that it featured a whole bunch of actors who also appeared in the "Star Trek" franchise.
Chuck Lorre's hit sitcom, which ran for 12 seasons and stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik — who play Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, Penny Hofstadter, Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, and Amy Farrah Fowler, respectively — featured many, many cameos from pop culture icons, including the late James Earl Jones, Stephen Hawking, and even Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Throughout those 12 seasons, a lot of "Star Trek" veterans also showed up in cameo roles. So, who were they, and what did these "Star Trek" actors do during their appearances on "The Big Bang Theory?"

Bel-Air season 3 featured a cameo from Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Dk Metcalf, which continues one of the most iconic traditions from Will Smiths original Fresh Prince show. Dk Metcalf appeared in the Bel-Air season 3 finale, which had some shocking cliffhanger endings that set up a dramatic and thrilling potential season 4. The series has taken some inspiration from the show that inspired it but has set itself apart through original characterization and storylines.
The Fresh Prince cameos in Bel-Air are nice reminders of not just the show that came before, but the actors who made it so great. Bel-Airs individuality is part of the reason it has become such a big success for Peacock. The series of murder mysteries that began with the 2019 film Knives Out and continued with the 2022 film Glass Onion is set to keep on going with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which has writer/director Rian Johnson back at the helm. Johnson and his collaborators are being very secretive about this project right now, but there’s a lot of hype for it – so we figured this would be a good time to start assembling a list of Everything We Know About Wake Up Dead Man. Title
Johnson got the title Knives Out from a Radiohead song. When it came time to make the sequel Glass Onion, he got the title from a song by The Beatles. “We’re going to be doing Foxy Brown also as a musical,” Grier announced, but didn’t provide many details. She also shared that a studio is producing a seven-episode limited series based on her 2010 memoir, Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.

Many people have dreams of being an actor, sometimes in film and sometimes in television roles.
Some actors fall into the opportunity through lots of auditions, training, and from knowing the right people. But others get their start by becoming a famous name first.
Athletes are often in the public eye, gaining a following for being good at their chosen sport. Once they retire from their profession, some continue to grow their popularity through other ventures.
Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.
Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.
Some celebrities do one-shot cameos, like Michael Jordan and LeBron James in Space Jam, Uncle Drew starring NBA star Kyrie Irving, Airplane! with Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Blue Chips...

Think about how competitive the Emmy race is: There are so many excellent shows that deserve attention yet fail to make the nomination cut because they’re either not considered one of the frontrunners or they air on a broadcast network. That’s rough.
Now, imagine being a critically acclaimed drama on a premium network/streaming hybrid in a season where the drama race is pretty wide open. You’ve got big stars, high production values and well-known source material. Shoo-in, right?
Not if you’ve been canceled. (Cue sad trombone sound effect.) That’s the unfortunate fate of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the HBO series executive produced by Adam McKay that continued to earn raves in Season 2 for its heightened, not-quite-accurate-but-entertainingly-close-enough take on the 1980s rise of the “Showtime”-era Los Angeles Lakers. “Winning Time” should be in the awards conversation … but wound up getting canceled in September.

One of America's strangest celebrity sagas came to an abrupt, anticlimactic close when O.J. Simpson died at the age of 76 on April 10, 2024. The Heisman Trophy-winning running back from the University of Southern California became a professional football phenomenon during his 11-season tenure with the Buffalo Bills. He was blindingly handsome and charismatic, as comfortable in front of a camera as he was breaking tackles on the gridiron. Unlike Jim Brown, Simpson chose to keep playing football when he embarked on his acting career; and though Simpson was typically cast in supporting roles, they were often high-profile productions (namely the Best Picture-nominated "The Towering Inferno" and the Emmy-winning miniseries "Roots").
When Simpson retired, he continued to act while staying close to football as an on-field reporter for NBC. You never knew where The Juice was going to turn up, but you were never unhappy to see him. This was especially true...

Following the news of O.J. Simpson dying of cancer, celebrity reactions to the controversial figure’s death began pouring in.
In a statement shared by the Simpson family on Thursday morning, it was announced that on Wednesday, the former football player, who became better known for being accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman amid an infamous televised car chase and trial, “succumbed to his battle with cancer” while surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Caitlyn Jenner, who married Kris Jenner shortly after the Kardashian matriarch’s divorce from Robert Kardashian, who was Simpson’s defense attorney during the murder trial, was among the first to react on social media. “Good Riddance #OJSimpson,” she tweeted.
Mia Farrow also took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Thinking of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman – and their families.”
