The Phoenician Scheme
Director: Wes Anderson
Starring: Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, F. Murray Abraham, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Murray
Rating: Can’t Be Rated
I don’t like the cinema of Wes Anderson. It reminds me of those disjointed incoherent self consciously capricious film-school projects where the student wants to let the world he doesn’t care a fig about the rules.
Continuing his flabbergasting quest for the crest of quirkiness, Wes Anderson has now come up with The Phoenician Scheme a film that rattles all rationale and stirs up a storm in a teacup. Like other Anderson oddities this one too is visualized in cartoonstrip colours, mostly pale green, and a mood of mythologized satire , which itself is problematic for any serious viewing.

Abraham’s gorgeous villainy as the bland court composer eclipsed by Tom Hulce’s nitrogen-voiced genius Mozart is a treat
The pure gorgeous villainy of F Murray Abraham once again floods the screen, as saturnine and sulphurous as ever, in this new rerelease of Amadeus in its original 1984 theatrical cut. It was adapted by Peter Shaffer from his stage-play about the two real-life composers, one a genius, one a nonentity (itself a theme-variation from Pushkin’s 1830 drama Mozart and Salieri), and directed by the great Czech film-maker Miloš Forman – his English-language masterpiece, or maybe his masterpiece full stop. Abraham was in his mid-40s when he played this Oscar-winning role; when I first saw it, I thought he would surely dominate the movies for decades to come, no doubt in classical adaptations in which he would be a superlative Iago or Faustus. For some reason, he never again got a starring role to match this,...

While The White Lotus didn’t sweep the Supporting Actor/Actresses in a Drama Series category, as was at times predicted, the HBO powerhouse did match its Season 2 Emmy nomination tally with 23 this year, bringing its to-date total to 66 with 15 overall wins — with more potentially in store at the ceremony to be held Sept. 14.
Once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, performers Jason Isaacs, Scott Glenn and Aimee Lou Wood scored their first-ever Emmy nominations this year.
For Supporting Actress in a Drama, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Natasha Rothwell were also honored, with the latter seeing a repeat nomination for her role as Belinda, which she originated back in Season 1. They, along with Wood, face one performer each from Paradise, The Pitt and Severance (Patricia Arquette).

Miloš Forman's critically acclaimed biographical film Amadeus has found a new streaming home. The 1984 Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards starts streaming for free this month on Tubi. Other titles set to be added to Tubi's library include Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, and Thelma & Louise.
The musical biopic was adapted by writer Peter Shaffer, who had already tackled the subject for his stage play in the late '70s. He was inspired by the 1830 stage play Mozart and Salieri by Russian playwright Alexander Pushkin. Amadeus follows Antonio Salieri's frequently debated contempt for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the young musical prodigy revolutionized the musical scene in Vienna in the mid-1700s. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of the film:

When Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country hit theaters in 1991, fans of George Takei and his character, the venerable Hikaru Sulu, thrilled to the sight of him with a captain’s rank and command of the USS Excelsior.
As events of the film unfold, Uhura and Chekov refuse to leave the imprisoned Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy on Rura Penthe and send a false report to Starfleet that Enterprise’s backup systems have failed. Starfleet sends a message to Captain Sulu, and the appearance of the communications officer who delivers this message probably made more than one moviegoer blink in surprise! Was that...?
Yes! The unnamed officer was, in fact, Christian Slater!
How Slater got his cameo
Slater, of course, was no stranger to the big screen by the time he received his much-coveted Star Trek cameo. He’d starred in a variety of movies like Gleaming the Cube, Heathers,...

It’s unclear whether or not Marvel Studios' Moon Knight was well-received or not. The show had some issues, and they were noticeable. However, Oscar Isaac (Marc Spector and all his personalities), Ethan Hawke (Arthur Harrow), F. Murray Abraham (Khonshu), and May Calamawy's (Layla El-Faouly) amazing performances can’t be denied. The initial response was positive, but fans have since pointed out issues with it in the years since its debut on Disney Plus.
However, it sounds like there some ideas planned for the show that never came to fruition in the finished product - that includes a certain Moon Knight villain who was pitched, but sadly didn't make the cut thanks to their similarity to Black Panther's Erik Killmonger. And, if this writer is being honest, it could have changed the trajectory of the show and its characters.

Last week, Focus Features extended the incredibly kind invite to cover the latest from Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme. And frankly, as someone who adored this wonderfully weird flick, I couldn’t wait. In the new feature, Benicio Del Toro plays the ruthless businessman Zsa-Zsa Korda. In hopes to keep his name and himself alive – for this guy, it’s a struggle – he decides to appoint his estranged daughter, a nun brilliantly played by Mia Threaplton. If you love Wes Anderson films, you’re going to be delighted by the dark humor and its wildly engaging satire. The feature also stars Willem Dafoe, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hanks, and Bryan Cranston in brief but memorable roles.
It was a quick trip to New York, and the brief change of scenery was a treat. Once I arrived, I checked out the sites, and I wandered around Central Park and Columbus Circle.

Actor Michael Cera has appeared in a number of films throughout his career, including Superbad, Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. Cera’s breakout role came in 2003 when he began playing the son of Jason Bateman’s Michael Bluth, George-Michael Bluth, on the critically acclaimed hit series Arrested Development. However, it seems as though iconic actor and martial artist Jackie Chan hasn’t seen much of Cera’s work.
Cera, who is starring in the latest film by Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme, was promoting the movie in London recently and, per NME, had an interesting albeit awkward encounter with Chan. Chan was also in London to promote his latest film, Karate Kid: Legends, and he and Cera were both promoting their respective projects in the same building.

Wes Anderson, one of Hollywood’s most revered and identifiable contemporary filmmakers, is back with “The Phoenician Scheme.” The writer-director’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2023 sci-fi dramedy, “Asteroid City,” is another high-concept, highly stylized ensemble film bursting with more vibrant pastels and deadpan gags than you can count. But will it be able to live up to the standard of Anderson’s past films? There is only one way to find out.
Here is how, when and where you can watch “The Phoenician Scheme.”
When does “The Phoenician Scheme” come out?
“The Phoenician Scheme” is set to be released in limited theaters on Friday, May 30. It will expand nationwide on Friday, June 6.
Is “The Phoenician Scheme” streaming?

Kathy Bates is looking back at her career and recalling why director Garry Marshall didn’t cast her in the film adaptation of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, a stage role she originated.
In a new interview, Bates opened up about getting passed over for the lead role in 1991’s Frankie and Johnny, which ultimately went to Michelle Pfeiffer, opposite Al Pacino.
“He couldn’t make the leap that people would see me onscreen kissing someone,” Bates said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Me actually kissing a man onscreen—that would not be romantic.”
Bates said she has “always had that,” recalling that her father told her hometown acting teacher, “You know, she’s not conventionally attractive.”
Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune was a 1987 Off-Broadway love story starring Bates as waitress Frankie and F. Murray Abraham as a short-order cook.

Disney family title Lilo & Stitch and Paramount action film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning square off at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, in what exhibitors will hope is one of the highest-grossing weekends of the year.
Both titles are opening wide, and have built interest with extensive marketing campaigns and two days of previews, from Wednesday 21.
Box office takings are not expected to crack the weekend of July 21-23, 2023, when the Barbenheimer phenomenon brought in £29.4m from Barbie and Oppenheimer alone – the only occasion when two films have taken more than £10m on the same weekend in the territory.

Kicking things off with a small but enticing update, following last year’s incredible cine-memoir It’s Not Me, Leos Carax is finally prepping a 2026 shoot for his first narrative feature since Annette. While not much is known about the project, a casting call confirms Léa Seydoux and Adam Driver will star in the Paris-set feature. “I have no shame in my game,” Ballerini told People. “I auditioned for the second season of The White Lotus for the role [of] Jennifer Coolidge’s assistant that Haley did.”
She said Richardson played the part “so brilliantly and beautifully,” adding: “But yeah, I did audition for that. Fun fact.”
Set in Sicily, Season 2 of Mike White’s anthology series saw Portia accompany her heiress boss on vacation, where she meets the mysterious Jack (Leo Woodall), while Tanya is swept off her feet by a group of jet-setting gay men with ulterior motives.

Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

In another attempt to make a casual comeback, Kevin Spacey brings out his character Frank Underwood to help promote Tim Dillon’s comedy special on Netflix. Spacey appears as his House of Cards character in a promo video, and fans are furious over it. They bashed Spacey, Dillon, and Netflix for pulling such a stunt, claiming that it came out in poor taste.
Spacey was earlier fired from his hit Netflix show when he was accused of s*xual misconduct. Actor Anthony Rapp claimed that Spacey made unwanted advances towards him when he was 14 years old and the Usual Suspects actor was 26.
Spacey was found not liable in the s*xual harassment lawsuit filed against him in New York. He was also acquitted of all charges in a separate case in London. However, many people are still not ready to let him off the hook.

Mythic Quest, the Apple TV+ series partly created by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, is officially ending its journey, as the show will end after its fourth season. However, even though the series itself will done, the creators are going to ensure that the loyal fans will get a nice surprise that will give the show the send-off they deserve.
The fourth season of Mythic Quest just concluded last month. Yet, the finale, “Heaven and Hell” wasn’t meant to be a series finale. Thus, a revised version set to air this week will serve as a true conclusion.
A joint statement was issued by McElhenney, Mythic Quest co-creator Megan Ganz and EP/co-star David Hornsby. “Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got...

The White Lotus, created by Mike White, is the hottest show in the world right now! The third season of the hit HBO series just came to an end in April 2025, four years after the series premiered in the summer of 2021.
The White Lotus is already coming back for season 4, and probably more seasons, honestly. There doesn't seem to be anything stopping this show from becoming an all-time great drama-comedy series.
To celebrate the greatness of this show, I ranked all three seasons of The White Lotus so far. Honestly, there is no "worst" season of this show. They are all good, but there's definitely one show that stands apart from the rest.

It's always a little awkward when you tell someone about a celebrity's death and that person has never heard of them to begin with. It's the same way with TV shows. "Have you heard that Swagger was canceled? "No, I haven't heard of Swagger to begin with." That's often the case with Apple TV+ shows, which are some of the most wonderfully produced and star-studded series since the days of streaming began. The problem is, most people have never heard of them, give or take Ted Lasso and Severance. Well, if you haven't heard of Mythic Quest, it's a delightful show, and you should watch it, though it's a little too late now. The series, which recently ended its fourth season (and a brief anthologized spin-off), has been canceled.
Created by three of the very funny minds behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest had a lot of people rooting for it.

Apple TV+ has ended Mythic Quest after four seasons. The final episode of the workplace comedy aired on March 26 but will now be re-released with an updated ending. The revised version will be available next week on the platform.

Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest has come to an end. The streamer has opted not to renew the gaming workplace comedy series for a fifth season. The decision comes days after the Season 4 finale dropped March 26.
Since it had not been conceived as a series finale, the Season 4 finale will now get a new ending to give fans closure. The updated episode will be made available next week.

Let’s be honest: The White Lotus isn’t just a TV show. It’s a wild, sun-soaked safari through the land of the morally bankrupt, where every smile hides a secret, and every resort check-in comes with complimentary emotional baggage. Creator Mike White has somehow turned luxury vacation drama into a spectator sport, and we are so here for it.
From the lush beaches of Maui to the scandal-soaked villas of Sicily and now the chaotic calm of Thailand, each season serves up a fresh platter of rich people misbehaving, with a side of murder and a bottomless mimosa of dysfunction.

And the characters? Oh boy. They range from mildly annoying to full-blown nightmare fuel. One moment you’re thinking, ‘Maybe they’re misunderstood,’ and the next you’re screaming, ‘Push him off the balcony already!

Fans of “The White Lotus” are looking forward to the season finale of Mike White’s twisted HBO series on Sunday night – but for actors from other series hoping to be recognized in the supporting categories at this year’s Emmy Awards, it could be a sobering night.
That’s because Season 3 of the series has already spent seven hours spinning out juicy storylines for a wide array of actors, including Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Carrie Coon, Natasha Rothwell and Sam Rockwell. If the finale does justice to the craziness that filled the first seven episodes, it’s going to be very hard to keep Emmy voters from doing what they did after Season 1 and Season 2 of the series, when the supporting categories were clogged with “White Lotus” performers to the exclusion of almost everybody else.

Surely, you must be kidding. Leslie Nielsen was the best man at James Doohan's second wedding? Yes, he was, and don’t call us Shirley! It happened in 1967, when Doohan married Anita Yagel. Also in attendance that day: Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Doohan and Yagel divorced in 1972.
For those wondering about the connection between Doohan, who co-starred as Montgomery Scott, the intrepid engineer aboard the USS Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series, and Nielsen, the star of Forbidden Planet, Police Squad!, Airplane!, Creepshow, and the Naked Gun movies, they became friends while studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Another of their classmates was Tony Randall, who’d later find success with Pillow Talk, 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, The Odd Couple, and Down with Love, a Ewan McGregor-Renee Zellweger romantic comedy that co-starred Star Trek: Voyager’s Seven of Nine, Jeri Ryan.

An episodic anthology series…. that’s a spinoff… of an Apple show… with no relation to “Ted Lasso” or “Severance” — in this economy?! Not a single word of that pitch should inspire confidence in anyone, let alone professional TV programmers, yet Rob McElhenney & Co. successfully sold Apple TV+ on the new “Mythic Quest” spinoff, “Side Quest.”
Developed and executive produced by Ashly Burch, John Howell Harris, and Katie McElhenney (Rob’s sister), “Side Quest” is inspired by the original series’ well-received departure episodes, the first of which was written by Katie and directed by Rob. “A Dark Quiet Death” is the fifth episode of “Mythic Quest’s” first season, and rather than continue the chronological story following Ian (McElhenney) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) as they to build on the success of their hit Mmorpg, the episode jumps back a few decades, introduces two brand-new characters, and doesn’t connect to...

At the iconic destination resort for the upper class, Murray Bartlett’s addiction relapse and Jennifer Coolidge’s desperation to find love doom them both in Season 1 of The White Lotus. Their characters are complete messes, and their imperfections make for damn good TV. However, these are far from the only performances in the show that are worthy of mentioning. Creator Mike White brings disorder to each season that is as uncomfortable as it is hilarious to watch unfold, unleashed by the exceptional acting talent. There are Oscar-winners on and off the screen throughout the series, from Laura Dern and Ke Huy Quan letting loose f-bombs over the phone, to F. Murray Abraham playing a horny grandpa whose sexism infects his son and grandson.

Not only is she serving on the International Competition jury – alongside Greek filmmaker Dimitris Athiridis and four-time Oscar-nominated producer Signe Byrge Sørensen – but she’s being honored by the festival with a retrospective of her work. On Thursday, she gave a master class at TiDF, “Social Studies: The Artist’s Journey” — the title referencing her most recent documentary, the widely praised docuseries Social Studies about the impact of social media on American kids.
Greenfield says of the career tribute, “It’s really exciting. It’s a huge honor… I’m really thrilled to get to be here.”

Blumhouse's latest thriller starring 1923's Brandon Sklenar and The White Lotus' Meghann Fahy has debuted with strong reviews from critics. Skelnar plays a prominent role in the cast of 1923, Taylor Sheridan's popular Yellowstone prequel, as Spencer Dutton, the nephew of Harrison Ford's Jacob Dutton. The hit Paramount+ series returned for season 2 last month, with Skelnar reprising his role in an impressive cast that includes Helen Mirren, Jerome Flynn, Timothy Dalton, and Robert Patrick.
Fahy, on the other hand, will be best known to many audiences for her role as Daphne Sullivan in The White Lotus season 2. Murray Abraham, Adam Dimarco, Beatrice Grannò, Theo James, Tom Hollander, Aubrey Plaza, and Michael Imperioli.
