Biography

    • Christina Applegate was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, to record producer/executive Robert Applegate and singer-actress Nancy Priddy. Her parents split-up shortly after her birth. She has two half-siblings from her father's re-marriage - Alisa (b. October 10, 1977) and Kyle (b. July 15, 1981). Alisa and Christina are best friends and even lived together while Alisa was going to college. Christina's mother took her along on all of her auditions and acting jobs. She made her acting debut at age five months, when her mother got her in a commercial for Playtex nursers. Her mother never remarried, but kept company with Stephen Stills. Christina still cherishes a guitar Stephen gave her when she was young. She played in a number of TV series before landing her breakout role in Married... with Children (1987). Christina still studies jazz dance.

Trivia

  • Told that the script for Legally Blonde (2001) initially came her way but she was leery about taking on another "dumb blonde" role since Married... with Children (1987) had just wrapped. The role eventually went to Reese Witherspoon and she was nominated for the Golden Globe for portraying Elle Woods. Applegate is happy with the way things turned out and said that Witherspoon had done a much better job than she ever could.
  • Her garage was the birthplace of The Pussycat Dolls.
  • In contrast to her character on Married... with Children (1987), she has been described by her co-stars on the sitcom as an intelligent, versatile and talented actress. In multiple interviews, Ed O'Neill stated that only someone of her caliber and intelligence could pull off the "dumb blonde" character on the sitcom so convincingly, and that she would often nail her performance on the first or second take.
  • Last year, Applegate discussed how her life had been impacted since her MS diagnosis, explaining she had seen a 40-lb. weight gain and now struggles to walk without the support of a cane.
  • People magazine reported that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor-ordered MRI, the cancer was not life-threatening. She is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. On 19 August 2008, it was announced that she was cancer-free after a double mastectomy, though cancer was found in only one breast.

Quotes

  • [on accepting her role in the sitcom Jesse (1998)] This was a major commitment. I really had to sit and think about it. I eventually came to the conclusion that it came into my life for a reason.
  • There are a lot of sacrifices a mother makes when she's raising a child by herself. I saw it when I was growing up, watching all my mother did for me. But it wasn't until recently that I fully understood the price she paid because of how we had to struggle.
  • The person who I have my child with is going to be the right person. I don't want to raise a child by myself. I could do it. But I definitely don't want to. I want to be a mother who has the original father there. And I want to be with that person until I'm 80 years old, sitting out on the porch with our glasses of lemonade, laughing about our lives.
  • [on her sitcom Married... with Children (1987)] The show definitely shocked and disgusted people. But privately, they enjoyed laughing at it. I think all too often people look at the perfect families on television and think, "Why can't my family be like that?" In the case of "Married with Children", people were able to say, "Thank God my family's not like that!"
  • I've always been shy and sort of vulnerable. My mom says that when she would drop me off at school, I'd stand back and check out the situation--see if it was safe before I'd join the other kids.
