Jonny Fairplay's Survivor Return Was Doomed By Danny Bonaduce And The Show's Producers
Image
Since the first scene of Survivor premiered, the fans of Jeff's Probst's beloved reality show have seen hundreds of people play the game. Fortunately for fans who are no longer figuring out which seasons to watch first, Survivor has had some truly great players throughout its many seasons. On the other hand, some players are remembered for things like becoming one of the show's worst winners, being medically evacuated, or being one of the most notorious villains.

Since even Jeff Probst once hated him, he faced really strange criminal charges, and he faked his grandmother's death, Jonny Fairplay is one of Survivor's biggest villains. As a result, fans were excited when Jonny was going to make his Survivor return after becoming notorious. Sadly, however, Jonny's return was ruined by Survivor's producers and Danny Bonaduce.

10 Actors Who Were Surprisingly Good In Rom-Coms
Image
Romcoms benefit from unexpected casting choices, adding a fresh twist to the genre and attracting new audiences. Actors like Adam Sandler, Kristen Stewart, and Emilia Clarke have all successfully challenged their usual roles in romcoms. A good performance in a romcom can change the way audiences see an actor.

Romcoms tend to go for the same kinds of actors, so it's refreshing to see a new face in the genre, especially one which fans would never have expected. This could either be when a dramatic actor tries out their comedy skills, or when a different type of comedian fancies themselves as a romantic lead. The humor of romcoms is a peculiar genre, so cynical or overly crude comedians don't often fit in.

Because of all the tropes which define the genre, it's a pleasant surprise to see romcoms which shake things up. One of the easiest ways to do this...

All 7 Deaths In Pulp Fiction, Ranked
Image
Mentions of sexual assault

Pulp Fiction has all the characteristics of a Quentin Tarantino movie, including various deaths, some more graphic and shocking than others. Following his debut movie Reservoir Dogs in 1992, Tarantino moved on with another crime movie that ended up becoming his big break as a filmmaker: Pulp Fiction. Told in a non-linear style, Pulp Fiction tells four intertwining stories of crime and violence set in Los Angeles, all of them linked thanks to Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), a crime boss and employer of the movie’s biggest characters: Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson).

Pulp Fiction is packed with action and a couple of twists and turns, with some truly shocking moments, like one involving Marsellus and boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Williams), and various deaths. Surely, the latter are not all that surprising given the theme of Pulp Fiction and the fact that...

"I Was So Bad": Ben Affleck's Only Buffy The Vampire Slayer Line Was Voiced Over
Image
Ben Affleck shares a funny story about one of his first roles in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. Released in 1992, the film debuted to mixed reception but performed modestly well at the box office. Still, Buffy the Vampire Slayer became far more well-known for the hit TV series it inspired five years later, created by the movie's writer Joss Whedon.

Appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Affleck was asked if he's ever been cut from a project. After joking he was fired from some construction jobs as a teenager due to a "tardiness problem," Affleck discussed having his only line dubbed in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie:

The most humiliating thing was one of my early parts. I got one line. I'd just moved out to L.A...It was a small film called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not the television version, but the movie,...

‘The Wedding Singer’: THR’s 1998 Review
Image
On Feb. 13, 1998, New Line unveiled The Wedding Singer in theaters in time for Valentine’s Day audiences. The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rom-com went on to earn 123 million globally at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below.

We’ve all heard him, usually at weddings and bar mitzvahs where alcohol often blurs true appreciation of his talents. Song stylist extraordinaire, he has the uncanny ability to make virtually any song, even “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida,” sound like “Hot Hot Hot.”

Now, thanks to Adam Sandler, he has been finally given his due in The Wedding Singer, a (for the most part) winning romantic comedy that plays off the per former’s sweet, loopy personality. Despite a saggy middle stymied by sappy good intentions, the picture stands as Sandler’s best effort.

Demographically, expect some thing of a trade-off. While all the lovey-dovey stuff might turn off some of his partying young male fans,...

Altered Innocence to Bow Classic LGBTQ Pics, Such as ’The Wounded Man,’ as ‘Arrebato’ Plays Lumière’s Mifc (Exclusive)
Image
A restored version of Iván Zulueta’s ground-breaking 1979 film “Arrebato” (“Rapture”) is screening at the Lumière Festival’s International Classic Film Market (Mifc) in Lyon, France, thanks to Los Angeles distributor Altered Innocence and Madrid’s Mercury Films.

The cult film, considered a milestone in Spanish cinema from the post-Franco years, is seen as metaphor for how directors can be consumed by filmmaking. It centers on José, a frustrated low-budget horror movie director trying to complete a film while struggling with drug addiction. When he receives a package from past acquaintance Pedro — a Super-8 film reel and audiotape – José soon finds himself sucked back into the eccentric young man’s vampiric orbit.

“‘Arrebato’ has such a rich mix of horror influences, punk aesthetics, arthouse vibes, and queer cinema history that audiences can’t help being enraptured by this total gem of a film,” says Frank Jaffe, founder and head of Altered Innocence.

Patricia Arquette on Ricky Gervais Transphobia Controversy: ‘I Don’t Think It’s Funny’
Patricia Arquette at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
Golden Globe nominee Patricia Arquette is wondering whether Ricky Gervais has apologized yet for some of his recent tweets that have been deemed transphobic.

“I think it’s a really important conversation for everybody to have. Obviously, I have very strong feelings about protecting the trans community,” Arquette told Variety‘s Marc Malkin on the red carpet of BAFTA’s annual tea party in Los Angeles, Calif. on Saturday. “I just don’t think anything’s funny about making fun of the trans community. They’re really persecuted, so I don’t think it’s funny.”

This is far from the first time Arquette has spoken out for transgender rights. When she won the limited series/TV movie supporting actress Emmy in September 2019, Arquette used her time on stage during her acceptance speech to remember her sister, actor and transgender rights activist Alexis Arquette, who passed away three years prior.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Five Key Takeaways From the 2019 Emmy Awards
Phoebe Waller-Bridge
The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards offered up several pleasant surprises — wins for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Billy Porter, to name two — as well as a few less well-received moments. Here are the top five takeaways from the night.

A Long, Host-Free Affair

Fox followed in the Oscars’ footsteps and opted for a host-less Emmys this year. However, while the film awards show saw a spectacular bump of almost 30% in the ratings after ditching an emcee, there was no such luck for Fox on Sunday night.

Instead, the ceremony opened with a piano falling on Homer Simpson — a fitting image as the ratings also came crashing down. The show slipped to an all-time low of 6.9 million total viewers and a less-than-stellar 1.6 rating among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The Oscars achieved a tighter show by cutting out superfluous host bits, whereas the Emmys somehow seemed to drag on forever.

How Powerful Winners’ Speeches Elevated a Flawed Emmys Telecast (Column)
Rachel Brosnahan in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
Say what you will about Sunday’s flawed, lowest-rated Emmy show in history — yes it dragged, the host-less strategy backfired and it had its share of embarrassing bits — but boy, were there some powerful moments that I still can’t shake.

There was that show-stopping acceptance speech by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” supporting actress winner Alex Borstein, who implored all women to “step out of line!” as her grandmother so boldly did when she was about to be “shot into a pit” at a concentration camp and saved her own life.

I don’t know how it played at home, but I can tell you how moving it was to be in the room when limited series lead actor winner Jharrel Jerome paid tribute to the five real-life exonerated men portrayed in Ava DuVernay’s drama “When They See Us,” and we all leaped to our feet.

Another deserving standing...

2019 Emmys telecast review: Surprising winners and emotional speeches didn’t make up for an awkward ceremony
Stephen Colbert
The Emmys followed in the Oscars’ footsteps this year by going without a host, the first time the Emmys has done so since 2003. Early in the telecast it was hard to tell whether the change was an improvement, and by ceremony’s end the jury was still out. Past Emmy hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel joked that the lack of a host could lead to unexpected consequences, like abolishing presenters next. Whatever the future holds, it’s safe to say that this year’s ceremony proved that a hostless ceremony doesn’t necessarily equal a great ceremony.

Emmys 2019: The night’s 5 best acceptance speeches include Jharrel Jerome, Michelle Williams…
Alex Borstein
Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards was an evening of exciting wins, great fashion and, of course, great speeches. The speeches spanned the emotional spectrum from being genuinely heartfelt and touching to absolutely hilarious and full of wit. With the ceremony now in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at the five best acceptance speeches we heard during the show.

Comedy Supporting Actress: Alex Borstein, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”

Borstein gave one of the best speeches last year and she followed it up with another knockout this year. She started by taking a swig from a minibar bottle with her “Family Guy” co-star Seth MacFarlane and then built on her material from last year by saying that she wasn’t wearing underwear and that her seat should be destroyed. She then brought up her mother and grandmother, both immigrants, and her grandmother who escaped being shot by a guard...

And it seems like they were a strong foursome, because that's where the spirits are placing Tyler's focus. "There's really a priority about wanting to refer to the siblings and talking about...

Gomez credits her mother, Mandy Teefey, for raising her in an environment that was "incredibly open-minded and non-judgmental." The "It Ain't Me" singer recalls hanging out with a few of her mother's friends, who just so happen to be gay.

Newswire: Patricia Arquette criticizes Oscars for leaving sister Alexis out of In Memoriam reel
Moonlight’s big win at the Academy Awards last night stunned (as well as gratified) many viewers, including Patricia Arquette. The Oscar winner tells Vanity Fair that the film’s victory is heartening to see, especially in light of the bigotry that still exists in the world: “This beautiful story about a gay kid in America in a world that doesn’t accept gay people.” But Arquette also wondered why, when recognizing this stunning achievement of queer cinema—scratch that, of filmmaking, period—the Oscars chose to leave her sister out of the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment.

The late Alexis Arquette was a trans woman and activist, with 70 acting credits to her name. Her sister Patricia admitted she was “really bummed” not to see Alexis’ photo included in the broadcast of the In Memoriam reel, considering her artistic output and advocacy work: ”Her career was cut short, not ...
