The Naked Gun Uses Pamela Anderson To Parody A Trashy '90s Classic
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Naked Gun."

This month's reboot of "The Naked Gun" may be a parody of the action film in general, but that doesn't mean its satiric targets are all that broad. The movie recognizably spoofs at least a handful of films, though not in a fashion that would allow the film to become quickly dated, something that /Film's Ethan Anderton observes in his review. In other words, there's nothing like the moment from "Hot Shots: Part Deux," in which Saddam Hussein is shot to pieces and then reforms a la the T-1000 in "Terminator 2," happening here. Instead, "The Naked Gun," as directed by co-writer (and "The Lonely Island" member) Akiva Schaffer, is more concerned with stuffing its brief runtime with jokes-a-plenty. In a similar fashion to Schaffer's prior comedy movies like "Hot Rod" and "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," "The Naked Gun" is all about the yuks.

Eddie Murphy at an event for Good Luck Chuck (2007)
Eddie Murphy confirms he’s playing Inspector Clouseau in the upcoming Pink Panther movie
Eddie Murphy at an event for Good Luck Chuck (2007)
A couple of years ago, we reported on Eddie Murphy engaging in negotiations to star in a new continuity of Pink Panther films. The original movie starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau as he tracks down a notorious jewel thief known as “The Phantom” before he is able to steal a priceless diamond known as “The Pink Panther”. The opening credits included the cartoon panther that audiences have come to associate with the franchise, and sources said that this new project will attempt to meld both worlds. The live-action/CG hybrid movie is said to see “the Pink Panther’s live-action crew break him out of his animated prison to do a heist job.“

Since the news broke, Murphy has starred in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and soon, he will be starring in Amazon MGM’s The Pickup. Murphy recently spoke with NBC‘s Al Roker on Today in...

Sylvester Stallone's Directorial Debut Was A Flop With Rocky Vibes
Image
There are so many reasons why "Rocky" became such a massive hit in 1976, even if nobody besides writer and star Sylvester Stallone could see it from the outset. Sly was the only one who believed in the movie and, more importantly, in himself as its main character. Early on, after he enlisted producers Irvin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, and even after United Artists agreed to finance the film, Stallone faced intense pressure to give up the lead role to other more well-established performers. In fact, he almost lost the part of Rocky Balboa to Burt Reynolds, but stayed strong, resisting the pressure to step aside and essentially turning himself into an A-lister in the process.

Arguably, "Rocky" wouldn't have worked without Stallone's lead performance — at least, it would have been a very different movie. But it wasn't just this star turn that made the sports drama into a hit. Sly...

Matthew McConaughey, Nic Pizzolatto Reunite For 'Mike Hammer' Movie
Image
Mike Hammeris about to look a lot like Rust Cohle — or maybe it's the other way around. The point is: Matthew McConaughey is reuniting with his True Detective creator, Nic Pizzolatto, to bring one of the most iconic, and aggressive, detectives to the big screen, with everyone's favorite Texan taking on the titular role. That's right, the prolifically-penned, pulp-y private eye, Mike Hammer, will be the focus of Pizzolatto's next scripted project.

The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes on the heels of McConaughey's return to the screen in The Rivals of Amziah King after a six-year absence (if you don't count all the cartoon voice work he's done in the intervening years). And while the film's production house, Skydance, has yet to secure a director, with talents like McConaughey and Pizzolatto on board, it will probably only be a matter of days — rather than months — before a name is announced.

The Phantom X introduces a new protagonist and story, but follows the same general gameplay loop as the mainline Persona games. Persona5: The Phantom X still features a combination of social simulation as a student and dungeon crawling as a member of a new party of Phantom Thieves.

Slam evil! The Phantom appears on 4K Blu-ray later this year
Image
In the wake of Batman and its hit sequels, interestingly, movie studios wouldn’t necessarily snatch up more DC properties to adapt, but they did attempt to bring more classic pulp heroes to the screen with The Rocketeer, The Shadow and 1996’s The Phantom. While there was an animated series just two years prior with the purple-clad character trying to save our dying planet in the future with The Phantom 2040, the feature film with Billy Zane takes its cue more from Indiana Jones-esque action with its 1930s setting and globe-trotting adventure.

Blu-ray.com has reported that the Paramount adaptation of the Lee Falk comic strip is now set to grace your TV screens in crisp ultra-high def 4K with a new Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. The new physical release of the Simon Wincer film, which stars Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and James Remar, is scheduled to...

Director Ridley Scott's historical feature "1492: Conquest of Paradise" (1992) dramatizes Italian explorer 'Christopher Columbus' and his travels to the 'New World', starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante and Sigourney Weaver:

"'Queen Isabella I' (Weaver) owes money to Santángel. Columbus meets with the queen, who grants him his journey in exchange for his promise to bring back sufficient amounts of riches in gold.

Judge Dredd (1995) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
Imagine if, in modern times, the role of let’s say, DC’s Sgt. Rock went to the literal Rock, Dwayne Johnson. Imagine that he was given creative control over the high budget state of the art project despite having no idea who Sgt. Rock even was initially. Finally, imagine he decided to make it in the vein of all of his films, hiring Kevin Hart to be his sidekick, and royally pissing off fans of the source material along the way. That’s the best modern analogy I can come up with for what happened to 1995’s Judge Dredd. A film that had crew members allegedly taking bets on their director’s life expectancy, an NC17 rating, and Sylvester Stallone screaming I Am The Law!!! This is what happened to Judge Dredd.

Judge Dredd debuted in 1995; a year packed with iconic films. At the time, the superhero craze hadn’t fully kicked in,...

Image
After a heartbreaking loss to Mikey Madison (Anora) for the Best Actress Oscar, The Substance's Demi Moore's 1996 box office bomb, Striptease, is climbing the global Max top 10 chart. Released during the prime summer season, the film was supposed to be a high-profile box office hit, but ended up being a massive financial failure in North America. It is widely considered one of the worst films of all time.

Striptease was based on Carl Hiassen's 1993 novel and follows Erin Grant, who lost her FBI job after her loser ex-husband, Darrell (Robert Patrick), was arrested for drugs. And soon after, she loses custody of her daughter, Angela to said loser ex-husband. Grant becomes a stripper at the Eager Beaver strip club in Miami, Florida, to get the $15,000 needed to file an appeal for reprieve. Soon, she catches the eye of a creepy Congressman named David Dilbeck (Burt Reynolds).

Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd Features An Easter Egg Only Diehard Fans Caught
Image
The 1995 Sylvester Stallone sci-fi action movie "Judge Dredd" is kind of a hot mess. Based on the "Judge Dredd" stories in the British comic anthology series "2000 A.D.," the movie follows Stallone as the eponymous Judge Dredd, one of a number of "judges" who serve as judge, jury, and executioner in an attempt to stop rampant crime in an overpopulated city. With his iconic red and black helmet and massive golden epaulets on his shoulders, Stallone's Dredd is a pretty direct rendition of his comic book counterpart. While fans of the comics didn't get exactly what they wanted out of a "Judge Dredd" film until Pete Travis's "Dredd" came along in 2012, starring Karl Urban as the grimacing super-cop, there were at least a few nods to the source material in the Stallone version, including one seriously deep cut reference.

Towards the end of "Judge Dredd," which might just be...

How to Train Your Dragon ~ To Be Released June 13,, 2025
“How to Train Your Dragon” will be released in theaters on June 13, 2025. It is a remake of the animated film series that began with a 2010 animated film, produced by DreamWorks Animation. It is based on the book series by Cressida Cowell and, hopefully, it will continue the original movie’s legacy.

“How to Train Your Dragon“ Storyline:

Everyone knows that Vikings and dragons have been enemies ever since they realized they live on the same planet, on the same isle. This is why the story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is so horrendous! He befriended a dragon. No Viking has even done that! It’s unheard of. It’s unacceptable. It’s impossible! Isn’t it?

Not impossible for Hiccup. Not only does he befriend the scary Night Fury dragon named Toothless, but he trains the creature! Who does that? Certainly not a Viking! It’s against all the rules of Viking society!

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
The Odyssey | Christopher Nolan adapts epic poem for next film
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan is adapting classic Greek poem The Odyssey by Homer for his next film, it’s been confirmed.

We’re catching up on a few stories following the festive break, so let’s start here.

Nobody can accuse Christopher Nolan of being complacent. After beginning his career with films like the low-budget Following, the mind bending Memento and thriller Insomnia, Nolan created arguably one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all time with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Since then, Nolan has been ever more ambitious in his cinematic storytelling, from the epic beach scenes of Dunkirk to the innovative narrative of Tenet and the craftsmanship behind the build up of tension before the explosion in Oppenheimer.

His next film is somewhat surprising, and certainly not an easy text to adapt. According to Deadline, Nolan is turning Homer’s epic 8th century Greek poem The Odyssey into a film.

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Wonderful news! Universal Pictures said that Christopher Nolan will make a movie version of Homer’s famous poem, “The Odyssey.” The film will be released on July 17, 2026. Following the success of his Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, this project marks Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal.

The movie version will feature stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Universal says the movie is a “mythic action epic” that will be shot in beautiful places worldwide using cutting-edge IMAX film technology.

Among the most important works of Western writing is Homer’s The Odyssey, written around the 8th century Bce. The Odyssey: Nearly 27 Years Ago Armand Assante Gave us a Masterpiece and Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Will Have a Tough Time Beating the Greek Epic
Image
After months of speculation, Christopher Nolan’s next film was finally announced to be The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. The film is set to release in July 2026 and currently stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. There have been no details regarding the crew.

Several writers and artists have adapted the Greek epic numerous times. From James Joyce’s Ulysses to Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopaid, several works have been inspired by the epic. While Nolan’s film would probably be the biggest adaptation yet, many consider Andrei Konchalovsky’s miniseries starring Armand Asante to be the best one.

10 Best Comic Book Movies Inspired by Pulp Classics
Image
The most influential movies today are based on superhero comics. However, before the era of caped and costumed heroes, there was the age of pulp magazines. Popular until the 1950s, these magazines featured a wide range of heroes, from adventurers to noir detectives to horror protagonists. Pulp heroes were, in many ways, the precursors to modern superheroes.

After the success of Tim Burton’s Batman, an influx of pulp-inspired movies emerged in the 1990s. This era appealed to an older generation nostalgic for simpler heroes, while also embracing the stylish aesthetics of the 1930s and 1940s. Pulp-inspired movies were simpler, less flashy, and often cheesier than today’s superhero blockbusters, yet they retained a unique charm.

It’s a Wonderful Life: the streaming version on free apps is an abomination
Image
Jump back to Christmas Eve, 2023. I was feeling a bit of a case of the old “Bah Humbugs”, and while flipping through my various streaming services, I was thrilled to see that PlutoTV has a 24 hour channel dedicated to perhaps the greatest Christmas movie of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life. Within seconds of tuning in, I realized that something very, very wrong was happening with this version of the movie.

Indeed, not since old man Potter stole $8000 from Uncle Billy and the Savings & Loan has poor George Bailey had to deal with so much misfortune on Christmas Eve. What was wrong with it? Simple – the version of It’s a Wonderful Life streaming on the service has an alternate score. Indeed, Dimitri Tiomkin’s classic score has been replaced by a new score that sounds like it was lifted out of a Hallmark holiday movie. No, scratch that. That...

Josh Brolin Recalls Tense Moment With Denzel Washington on 'American Gangster' Set
Image
Denzel Washingtons impeccable Method acting nearly led to a fight between himself and Josh Brolin on the set of American Gangster. Washington is well-known for using The Method, which was developed by Stanislavski, but Brolin was unaware his co-star was in character while they ran lines on set. Brolin prefaced his story by explaining, Denzel and I, by the way, get along very well now, and then the actor said (per In Depth With Graham Bensinger):

Yeah, we almost got into a fight [] Denzel was a little late to set, and there was a whole thing there [] I was trying to remember the structure, and then we rehearsed. It wasnt that many lines, mostly mine. And Im supposed to be Super confident. Its Denzel Washington, man. Its, like, not easy. Youre just some actor who theyre trying out, seeing if hes the real thing or not, and I forgot a line.
