'Happy V Day!': Robert Englund Reflects on His Alien Invasion Series 41 Years Later
Image
Shortly before changing the horror genre forever with his role as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert Englund appeared in V, a sci-fi series that originally debuted in 1983. 41 years later, Englund reflected on the series with a post shared on social media.

"Happy V day! Original miniseries was released in 83," Englund said in a Facebook post, going on to share how the show wasn't initially envisioned as sci-fi. "The series was originally intended to be a political thriller about a fascist movement in the United States, inspired by Sinclair Lewiss 1935 novel It Cant Happen Here. However, network executives changed the series to science fiction to capitalize on the success of other science fiction hits."

Trim Season (2023)
In uncharted territory by Paul Risker
Trim Season (2023)
Trim Season

Production designer Ariel Vida's sophomore directorial feature, Trim Season, follows a group of young people who isolate themselves on a secluded farm in Northern California, making easy money trimming marijuana. When Emma (Bethlehem Million), Julia (Alex Essoe), and Dusty (Bex Taylor-Klaus), begin to suspect the farm and its matriarch Mona (Jane Badler) are shrouded in dark practices, they realise they might not escape with their lives.

When I connected with Essoe virtually, she was full of enthusiastic energy. The Canadian actress has long been a personal favourite genre performer after first seeing her in Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Starry Eyes. The visceral character she played in Marcus Dunstan's The Neighbour, opposite Josh Stewart, remains one of her most seductive and captivating performances. Together they show her emotional range, moving effortlessly between vulnerability and a cold, distant and rawer presence, that she has built upon throughout her career,...

Trim Season – Review
Image
(L-r) Julia (Alexandra Essoe) and Emma (Bethlehem Million) work in the cannabis factory, in Trim Season. Courtesy of Blue Harbor Entertainment

If you’re in the mood for a splatter flick with more gore than logic, Trim Season might be your ticket. We first see a woman in the woods killing herself as if driven by an unseen force. Cut to a city, where we meet a couple of twenty-somethings, Emma (Bethlehem Million), who is strapped for cash; and her big-sisterly pal Julia (Alexandra Essoe). At a bar, they’re introduced to a guy who offers them temp jobs trimming marijuana plants. It’s quite lucrative, paying $5,000 for two weeks of seasonal work. The recruiter drives them along with a few others to a remote forested region miles from the nearest paved road. Though the year isn’t specified, it seems to be set shortly before weed growing was legalized.

‘Trim Season’ Review – A Bewitching Exploration of Gender, Magic, and Marijuana
Image
Cannabis is known to have many medical benefits and can be helpful with conditions like cancer, chronic pain, and Ptsd. There is also evidence of marijuana being connected to spirituality and being used for ritualistic purposes throughout history. Trim Season is a fantastical and thought-provoking commentary on gender and the magical benefits of cannabis.

Trim Season was written by David Blair (The Triangle), Sean E. DeMott (American Satan), and Cullen Poythress, directed by Ariel Vida (Vide Noir), and produced by Paper Street Pictures. Vida was the production designer for Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s mind-bending films Something in the Dirt and The Endless, and if you’re familiar with the universe Benson and Moorhead have created, you will appreciate the imaginative and almost mythical Easter Eggs Vida incorporates into Trim Season.

Trim Season follows the twentysomething Emma (Bethlehem Million), who is struggling to pay her rent when she loses...

Reese Witherspoon, Paul Feig, Christopher Meloni Remember Raquel Welch: “A True Icon”
Image
Reese Witherspoon, Paul Feig, Jackie Hoffman and Christopher Meloni are among the Hollywood notables paying tribute to Raquel Welch, who died at age 82.

Welch’s management confirmed her death to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. The star was known for such film roles in the 1960s and ’70s as Fantastic Voyage, One Million Years B.C., Bedazzled, Kansas City Bomber and The Three Musketeers.

More recent credits included Chairman of the Board, Spin City, Welcome to the Captain, Date My Dad and How to Be a Latin Lover. She also memorably played herself on a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.

Reese Witherspoon took to social media to remember working with Welch on the hit 2001 film Legally Blonde. “So sad to hear about Raquel Welch’s passing,” Witherspoon tweeted Wednesday. “I loved working with her on Legally Blonde. She was elegant, professional and glamorous beyond belief. Simply stunning. May all her angels carry her home.

12 Underrated Sci-Fi Shows That You Need To See
Image
Science fiction allows us to explore worlds of imagination and possibility, the bigger and the wilder the better. However, the line between smash hit and cult darling is hard to pinpoint, much less cross. The show that doesn't win this blindfolded coin toss is often doomed to go forgotten, its episode order cut short, and its effects budget cruelly slashed just in time to limp to a half-baked finale or worse, a cliffhanger.

It's a fate that often hits this genre harder than others because big concept science fiction shows can look like money pits to studios worried about their bottom line. Money makes it difficult for showrunners to realize their full vision, much less attract strong writers to help them on the way. Despite these hurdles, there are years of great science fiction lurking under an ocean filled with "Star Trek" yachts and waves of reality TV. Of course,...

‘Surrogate’ Review
Image
Stars: Taysha Farrugia, Kestie Morassi, Darcy Kent, Jennifer Vuletic, Jane Badler, Brett Cousins, Matthew Crosby, Ellie Stewart | Written by David Willing, Beth King | Directed by David Willing

Surrogate begins with Rose (Taysha Farrugia) celebrating her ninth birthday before going to bed. She asks her mother Natalie if they can check for monsters. Natalie tells her there are no such things, which of course means the girl has more to worry about than a jump scare from her Uncle Will.

As she’s leaving the now-closed clinic she has an encounter with a woman who seems to be mentally ill. She encounters the woman again when she stops for gas, this time having to try and save her after she drinks bleach. After this she suddenly develops symptoms that resemble a pregnancy, even waking up bloody from the waist down as though she had given birth, but there’s no baby to be found.

Review: V the Final Battle
Lou Ferrigno in The Incredible Hulk (1996)
Once upon a time, when there were just three major networks, the schedules would be filled with glossy, interesting, high-concept miniseries, usually aired during the vital November, February, and May sweeps periods when the ratings were used to set advertising rates. This is what gave us great concepts like ABC’s Roots or, in 1983, V.

Metro subways and bus stations were plastered that spring with red-suited people, wearing sunglasses and big smiles, wrapping their arms around ordinary folk and we were assured: “The Visitors are our Friends”. A few weeks later, they were replaced with replicas but now a spray-painted V covered them and we got a hint of the Visitors’ true, reptilian nature.

The V miniseries, wonderfully written and directed by Ken Johnson (he of Incredible Hulk fame) was a taut two-night affair that presented the aliens coming to Earth and befriending us before their true intentions were revealed and a resistance movement began.
