Sneider’s sources inform him that The Pope’s Exorcist producers Sophie Cassidy and Jeff Katz are joining forces with Stephen J. Cannell Productions to bring the Wiseguy movie to the screen. In case you need a refresher, the...

Image

Why Brian de Palma Had to Kick Oliver Stone off the Set of Scarface
Image
Widely regarded as one of the greatest gangster movies of the '80s, Scarface has been celebrated for years and constantly referenced in pop culture, thanks to its stylish violence, characterization, and skin-crawling immediacy. The original film was inspired by Al Capone, who had a scar on his face, hence the title. But rather than chart the same path, the remake took a different path by focusing on a Cuban immigrant who becomes Miamis top gangster.

Spangled by stars – Steven Bauer in “My Uncle’s Movie,” Alba Flores in “The Shepherdess,” Larraín regular Alfredo Castro in “Dog Legs,” – the projects brought to Locarno’s networking confab Match Me! underscores the wealth of riches offered by emerging non-English language filmmakers from around the world.

Featuring slates from 36 producers, this year’s lineup also takes in next titles from Matīss Kaža, co-writer of Gints Zilbalodis’ Cannes hit and Annecy multiple winner “Flow,” and Chile’s Oro Films, France’s Wrong Films and the Dominican Republic’s Mentes Fritas Film Production, who backed respectively Argentine genre auteur standout “To Kill the Beast,” Sundance Sundance Jury Prize winner “Animalia” and SXSW Audience Award laureate “Bionico’s Bachata.”

A quick take on 2024’s Match Me! also underscores how how a global arthouse sector is increasingly – and excitingly – ever more mixing it up.

That cuts multiple ways. Doc/fiction titles and genre tropes and blending abound.

Richard Gere at an event for I'm Not There (2007)
Richard Gere and Edward Norton headline the 1996 thriller Primal Fear, which is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK.

Cast your mind back to 1996, assuming you were alive at that time, and not a toddler. This was a time when movie studios – Paramount in particular – were seeking mid-budget thrillers, which had a habit of delivering a very pleasant profit.

In the case of 1996’s Primal Fear, headlined by Richard Gere, the film also unearthed a brand new talent. That’d be Edward Norton, in his first high profile Hollywood role. For taking on the support in what could have been a disposable potboiler, he ended up scoring his first Oscar nomination for the role, and deservedly so.

There’s a lot else to like in the film, too. Gregory Hoblit was directing a bunch of mid-priced films at the time, and we’ve chatted about them and his work,...

Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul's Giancarlo Esposito Still Has Hope for Gus Fring Spinoff
Image
Better Call Saul won't the the final story told in the Breaking Bad universe if one star of both shows gets his way.

Originally introduced in the second season of Breaking Bad in 2009, Giancarlo Esposito's Gus Fring quickly became one of television history's most iconic villains. The character met his grisly end in a Season 4 episode that aired in 2011, but this would not be the last fans saw of Gus. The owner of Los Pollos Hermanos, who was secretly a powerful drug kingpin, returned for the prequel series Better Call Saul. While on the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards, Esposito spoke with Variety about the possibility of another spinoff series, and the actor made it clear he still really hopes to see a Gus Fring prequel series.

There were many unhappy fans when CBS canceled S.W.A.T. earlier this year after six seasons.

The series ended with plenty of cliffhangers, destined to remain unresolved.

Thankfully, the outpouring from fans paved the way for negotiations to get back underway, and the series secured a seventh -- and final -- season.

Below, TV Fanatic has rounded up everything we know about S.W.A.T. Season 7.

S.W.A.T. Season 7 Renewal Status

Fans of S.W.A.T. were left in shock when CBS canceled the series after six seasons in early May.

At the time, the show was a slam dunk for renewal, but the cancellation likely came down to the constrained economics of broadcast TV.

Scarface Remake: Here's What the Movie Needs to Live Up to the Original
Image
By the late 1970s, Brian de Palma had already proven himself to be a talented genre director with his classic films Carrie and Blow Out. But, in 1983, the New Jersey-born filmmaker showed his worth as a more mainstream, world-building talent when he brought the stylish and gritty crime drama Scarface to the big screen.

Written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino as driven-yet-sinister drug lord Tony Montana, Scarface not only left an indelible mark on the film industry, but also made a powerful impact on pop culture as a whole. For nearly 15 years, we've heard murmurings of a potential remake being in the works, with all sorts of Hollywood heavy-hitters from David Yates to the Coen brothers being attached at one point or another.

In late August 2023, Giant Freakin Robot reported that The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal is rumored to be attached as the lead of a Los Angeles-based Scarface movie,...

40 Years Later — The Cultural Impact of Scarface
Image
Directed by Brian De Palma from a screenplay by Oliver Stone, this is among the most famous gangster movies ever made. Of course, Scarface (1983) stars Al Pacino as Tony Montana, with the film chronicling his infamous rise and sudden fall as a drug lord out of Miami. A film of the same name was released several decades before, with Scarface (1932) seeing direction under Howard Hawkes. Despite holding far less name value in today's landscape, the original adaptation his actually held in higher regard. At least, in the eyes of industry pundits.

But nowadays, De Palma's iteration boasts one of the strongest cult statuses out of any film from the 1980s. It's a widely recognized piece, and it remains an essential film in the respective careers of everyone involved. Forty years down the line, even. Its release by De Palma is almost as popular as the plot itself, and the characters that lie within.

Mark Margolis, Actor on ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul,’ Dies at 83
Image
Mark Margolis, the journeyman actor who turned in a commanding performance as the vindictive drug runner Hector Salamanca, a man of few words and a bell, on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, has died. He was 83.

Margolis died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness, his son, actor and Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis, announced.

A protégé of Stella Adler who did double duty as the legendary acting teacher’s personal assistant, Margolis also stood out as the Bolivian henchman Alberto the Shadow in Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983); as the gravelly voiced landlord Mr. Shickadance looking for the rent in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994); and, from 1998-2003, as the HIV-infected mob boss Antonio Nappa on HBO’s Oz.

The Philadelphia native played an aging math teacher for Darren Aronofsky in Pi (1998), then showed up in the filmmaker’s next five movies:...

Ray Liotta Wasn't Exactly Blown Away By The Script For Field Of Dreams
Image
Kevin Costner has starred in several films about baseball, and they're all remarkably different. Both "Bull Durham" and "For Love of the Game" combine romance with America's National Pastime, yet the former is a funny, flirtatious romp that parallels the mechanics of the sport with the rituals of human courtship. The latter, on the other hand, is an elegiac melodrama about the things we prioritize in life and just how hard it is to bid farewell to the life you used to have upon reaching a crossroads.

Phil Alden Robinson's classic "Field of Dreams" exists somewhere at the nexus of those two films, merging a baseball fable with a poignant story about regret but with a fantasy twist. The film, which adapts W. P. Kinsella's 1982 book "Shoeless Joe," casts Costner as Ray Kinsella, an everyman who, like other Boomers, was once a child of '60s counter-culturalism. He's...

Better Call Saul: Zafiro Añejo Tequila is Breaking Bad’s Rosebud
Image
This article contains light spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6.

One of the most artistic scenes in either Better Call Saul or its parent show, Breaking Bad, is the cold open to the sixth season premiere episode. The audience is taken through Saul Goodman’s house in a first person point of view camera angle. A variety of items belonging to Saul throughout his adult life that have been previously seen in the two shows reappear here. From shoes Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) wore when walking at the mall with old ladies during a scheme, to his exotic tie collection, the scene indicates that Saul’s entire life is being escorted out of his house by movers.

The most important item that the camera focuses on is a bottle topper that falls out of a dresser drawer as it’s being lifted onto the moving van. This isn’t any ordinary cap,...

Scarface Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of Brian De Palma's Scarface is as iconic as the movie itself. The 1983 classic tells the rags-to-riches story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana as he builds his drug empire in Miami. Even though the Oliver Stone-written feature takes inspiration from a 1930 novel and Howard Hawks's briefly-banned original 1932 film also called Scarface, De Palma's movie is more than just a crime drama. Tony's aggressive desire to get to the top stands for many immigrants' wishes to achieve their very own American Dream. The larger social context aside, Scarface is also a cult classic for its stylized violence and vibrant costume design.

Scarface also features some iconic quotes like "Say hello to my little friend" and "The eyes, chico. They never lie," which have become pop culture canon. Electronic music veteran Giorgio Moroder's score also continues to be a highlight. Some of the movie's elements haven't aged well,...

Better Call Saul: Who Is Max? Gus Fring's Memorial Explained
Image
The "Dedicated to Max" Better Call Saul Easter egg is a dedication to a character previously introduced on Breaking Bad who holds special significance for Gus Fring. Situated at the center of a small and peaceful Mexican village is a luxuriously out-of-place yet tastefully designed memorial fountain with an inscription that reads “Dedicado A Max” or "Dedicated to Max." Though Better Call Saul gives no explanation as to what this means, clues are laid out in Breaking Bad that reveal more about the character of Gus Fring.

Gus Fring is introduced in Breaking Bad as a brilliant and ruthless drug kingpin who hides in plain sight thanks to his public persona as a successful and charitable business owner. However, Better Call Saul humanizes Gus Fring as the spinoff series dives deeper into his character and shows new aspects of her personality and motivations. This includes the tribute he has given to the character of Max,...

Ray Donovan Revival Show Teased By Paramount+ Exec
Image
Ray Donovan may return to screens via Paramount+ once it merges with Showtime. The series, which premiered on Showtime in 2013, ran for seven seasons and 82 total episodes, eventually going off the air in January 2020. The series followed Liev Schreiber as the title character, a fixer who works with many high-profile clients. The ensemble cast of the series, which was created by Ann Biderman, also included Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, Steven Bauer, Katherine Moennig, Pooch Hall, Jon Voight, and Susan Sarandon.

Per Variety, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish recently spoke about the future of Paramount+ - and potentially a Ray Donovan revival - at an investor meeting. The streaming service is reducing the amount of originals they produce, but as part of their impending merger with Showtime, they are focusing on continuing to bring fans some of the most popular series from both platforms. According to Bakish, this could...

Major Questions A Gus Fring Breaking Bad Spinoff Could Answer
Image
Although Better Call Saul brought the story of the Breaking Bad universe to a close, there's still dramatic mileage in a spinoff focused on the early life of Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) that could answer some important questions. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has stated that he's moving on to other projects, but would "never say never" to a return to the rich fictional world he and Saul co-creator Peter Gould created (per Variety). Given that both shows are held up as masterpieces of the crime genre, a second Breaking Bad spinoff series would need careful handling.

The stories of Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), Walter White (Bryan Cranston), and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) may have ended, but there's still one enigma that neither Breaking Bad nor Better Call Saul ever resolved. The pre-Breaking Bad life of Gustavo Fring is an unsolved mystery that would provide enough fresh...

Better Call Saul: David The Sommelier, Explained
Image
The final episodes of Better Call Saul contained shocking conclusions for many of the show's longest-running characters while also introducing new faces, with David the sommelier (Reed Diamond) being one of the most compelling. While David only appears in one scene of the show, he adds a significant level of detail to one of the most mysterious characters from both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, aloof crime boss Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Through a short conversation between the two, viewers were given a rare glimpse inside Fring's mind.

Deception is one of the biggest themes in Better Call Saul, so while it was unsurprising to see Fring have yet another secret, the rapport that he shared with David demanded a deep level of analysis. David is one of many memorable side characters from Better Call Saul who exude the energy of a main character, but the fact that he...

Al Pacino
Why Filmmakers Thought Al Pacino’s Scarface Should Never Be Made
Al Pacino
Al Pacino created an urban legend with Tony Montana, and Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983) is an icon of the gangster film genre; one of an unholy trinity alongside The Godfather (1972) and Goodfellas (1990). But when it premiered in New York, Steven Bauer, who played Manny Ribera in the film, remembers Martin Scorsese turning around halfway through the movie to warn: “You guys are great, but be prepared, because they’re going to hate it in Hollywood. Because it’s about them.”

The same could be said about the original Scarface. Studio filmmakers saw producer Howard Hughes as a rich interloper, bullying his way onto the lot with too many guns blazing. Conversely, Brian De Palma’s Scarface is about excess, and how success depends on it. Oliver Stone’s screenplay for the ‘80s movie used a gangster as an allegory for the Reagan administration’s war on drugs and the capitalistic greed of the era.

‘Better Call Saul’: Tony Dalton Explains Lalo’s Major Scene and Showdown With Gus
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the eighth episode of “Better Call Saul” Season 6, titled “Point and Shoot.”

After shooting Howard (Patrick Fabian) in the head and holding Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) hostage in their own home, Tony Dalton’s terrifying-yet-suave villain Lalo Salamanca has finally died, and at the hands of Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), no less. And in a twisted cherry on top of “Better Call Saul’s” suspenseful Season 6 Part 2 return, it’s revealed that Lalo is buried beneath Gus’ meth super-lab.

Lalo came so close to exposing Gus to the rest of the Salamanca cartel. Very calmly and thoroughly, he explained his plan for Saul to drive to Gus’ house, ring his doorbell and shoot him — all while Lalo is standing over Howard’s dead body. However, Saul convinced him to send Kim instead, saying that she’d be...
