The Richest Woman in the World | 2025 Cannes Film Festival Review
Image
The Biggest Camel: Klifa Recruits Huppert to Spoof the Bettencourt Affair

Thierry Klifa, who continues to work some of the most notable grand dames of contemporary French cinema, including Nathalie Baye and Catherine Deneuve, courts Isabelle Huppert as the headliner of his latest feature, The Richest Woman in the World (La femme la plus riche du monde). The film is a fictionalized account of Liliane Bettencourt, the L’Oréal heiress who lost control over her fortune when she was deemed unfit to manage it thanks to being swindled by Francois-Marie Banier, a photographer convicted of abuse of weakness in his relationship to Bettencourt (she gifted him nearly one billion dollars).…...

‘Leave One Day’ Review: Cannes Opens With a French Musical Confection About a Celebrity Chef in Midlife Crisis. But It’s a Less Than Rich Dessert
Image
With America not only spinning out of control but threatening to take the rest of the world with it, the Cannes Film Festival can be a place to play out that tumult, to see it writ large — on the big screen, where over the next two weeks it inevitably will be. It hardly matters that the films showing at Cannes were made before Trump took office. Movies are psychic, and always have been. It’s all but assured that a number of Cannes offerings this year — and, indeed, the very vibe of the festival — will channel the new world disorder.

But there’s another side to Cannes. Each year, the festival presents itself as a sanctuary, a ritzy oasis, a cinematic shelter from the storm. That’s the cozy bourgeois side of Cannes. Just look at the official poster for this year’s festival. You might have expected it to...

Gérard Depardieu Divides French Entertainment World As Counter-Petition Launched
Image
Some 600 French art and entertainment world figures have signed a “counter-petition” decrying moves to defend iconic actor Gérard Depardieu in the face of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.

The petition described a recent open letter in support of Depardieu, signed by 56 cinema world celebrities, and French President Emmanuel Macron’s public defense of the actor on a talkshow before Christmas as a slap in the face for all victims of sexual violence.

“It is the sinister and perfect illustration of the world which refuses to let things change,” read the letter posted on the site of investigative news website Mediapart on Friday.

“It is the reversal of roles where the executioner places himself as a victim, with the help of his friends. As always in cases of gender-based and sexual violence against women, the ‘presumption...

Dozens of French Stars Defend Gerard Depardieu, Denounce ‘Lynching’ of Actor Charged With Rape
Image
Fifty-six French stars, including Carla Bruni, Charlotte Rampling and Carole Bouquet, signed an open letter defending Gerard Depardieu, the Oscar-nominated actor who has been charged with rape and accused by more than a dozen other women of sexual assault, harassment or groping.

The essay, published in the conservative-leaning French newspaper Le Figaro, reads, in part: “We cannot remain silent in the face of the lynching targeting him, the torrent of hate being dumped on his personality” (via AP). “When Gerard Depardieu is targeted this way, it is the art [of cinema] that is being attacked. … Depriving ourselves of this immense actor would be a drama, a defeat. The death of the art. Our art.”

Other signatories included actors Pierre Richard, Victoria Abril and Nathalie Baye, and directors Bertrand Blier and Francis Veber.

Depardieu has not been convicted in connection with any of the allegations and denies wrongdoing. He called the open letter “beautiful” and its signatories “courageous,...

Carla Bruni, Charlotte Rampling Denounce ‘Lynching’ of Gerard Depardieu
Image
Nearly 60 actors and public figures, including British actress Charlotte Rampling and former French first lady Carla Bruni, have signed an open letter claiming that French actor Gerard Depardieu is the victim of a “torrent of hatred.”

Depardieu, who was previously charged with rape in 2021, is currently facing a new sexual assault allegation after a French actress, Hélène Darras, filed a police complaint claiming he groped her in 2007. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron defended the actor in an interview, saying he “makes France proud.”

Image
Some 50 French entertainment personalities have signed an open letter speaking out against the public “lynching” and cancelling of Gérard Depardieu in the wake of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.

The signatories include former first lady, top model and musician Carla Bruni as well as popular actors Charlotte Rampling, Carole Bouquet, Nathalie Baye and Pierre Richard.

The signatories said they did not want to pass comment on the accusations against Depardieu but could not remain silent in the face of the backlash against the actor in recent weeks.

“We are artists, writers and cinema producers. It’s in this capacity that we’re expressing ourselves here,” read the letter, published in Le Figaro newspaper on Christmas Day.

“We don’t want to enter into debate, and we leave the judiciary to do its job. Gérard Depardieu is probably one the greatest actors. One of the last sacred icons of cinema.

Jean-Luc Godard: Reckoning with the Cinematic Corpus of a Medium-Defining Artist
Cyril Leuthy
With a title that invokes both the specific (cinema of Godard) and the universal (cinema is Godard), Cyril Leuthy’s Godard Cinema finds itself in conversation with another formulation: Everything is Cinema. Richard Brody’s 2008 study of the filmmaker, is beautifully sentenced, dare-ing criticism; one wonders, sometimes, if his honest contrarianism is the result of a theoretical attempt to widen the possibilities for transmission and reception of image and narrative. Such an attempt finds a natural bedfellow in the mercurial cinema of Jean-Luc Godard. Leuthy’s hagiographic documentary, on the other hand, is an awkward fit for Godard’s polyrhythmic image collisions.

That Brody will be on hand to introduce Leuthy’s film to kick off its New York run at Film Forum speaks, perhaps, to the heart and head-felt intentions of Leuthy, a documentary filmmaker who’s worked as a director and editor of several film histories, including a...

9 Best Christmas Movies That Aren't Really Christmas Movies
Image
Many non-traditional Christmas movies are set during the holiday season or feature Christmas elements, such as Christmas trees or even Santa Claus. These movies often touch upon familiar themes of hope, community, and belief that are common in traditional Christmas movies. Some non-Christmas movies, like Die Hard, use the Christmas setting to add an extra layer of excitement and intensity to the action-packed storyline.

There are quite a few movies that are staples for the holiday season, but may not entirely conform to the expectations, tropes, or themes of a traditional Christmas movie. While classic Christmas movies like It's a Wonderful Life, Elf, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and A Christmas Story easily earn the distinction by revolving their plots around the holiday and featuring the celebratory trademarks, other films have earned the status by divisive or unconventional means. The story itself might not be about presents, holiday spirit, or renewing one's belief in Santa Claus,...

The Green Room
Image
François Truffaut goes deep and morbid adapting a Henry James story about a man who chooses to ‘devote himself to his beloved dead.’ He builds an altar-shrine to a departed bride and comrades that didn’t survive the Great War. A sympathetic woman considers aiding him, but his obsession keeps choosing life-negating directions. It’s a weird, morbid but highly understandable tale from the edge of the fantastic. The cinematographer is Néstor Almendros; the film is part of a 4-title François Truffaut Collection.

This article was originally published as "Life Is Nothing But Glances" in the Spring 2021 issue of Trafic. It is being presented here through the generosity of the author, newly retitled at his request, and in a new translation by Ted Fendt. It is preceded by a short note shared by Moullet after the death of Jean-Luc Godard:Godard represents, first of all, a search for novelty, one defined by risk and an openness to the possibility of making mistakes over the course of many experiments (over 100 films). For him, a failed film was not a serious matter.Godard made films against: against the milieu from which he came, against dominant rules, and also against himself and his previous films.Godard’s thinking can only be defined by seeing his films, and not through his statements which are often not worthwhile for what they say but for his desire to provoke.

Celebrate Godard’s Best Films on Criterion
Image
Jean Luc-Godard, who died Tuesday at the age of 91, was widely known as the King of the French New Wave. Since coming onto the scene in the 1960s, his seminal films such as “Breathless,” “Masculin, Feminin” and “Pierrot Le Fou,” introduced avante-garde techniques that have been since been replicated by innumerable filmmakers in the following decades.

In addition to a scathing intellectualism and stubborn stance against “the establishment”, the Franco-Swiss director was best known for changing the rules of cinema — his use of long-takes, jump-cuts and actor asides are just a few of the innovative practices he employed in his films that are still used to this day.

Thankfully, Godard left behind dozens of unforgettable films, many of which have been restored on Criterion. Below, check out some of Godard’s best films to celebrate the late director:

Downton Abbey A New Era 4K
Image
It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Hugh Bonneville on Future of ‘Downton Abbey’: “It Might Be the Right Time to Stop”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Downton Abbey: A New Era, Focus Features’ second feature spin-off from the phenomenally successful TV series, jitterbugged its way into cinemas earlier this year.

Bringing back the original ensemble of regulars, plus a few new additions in Dominic West, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock and Nathalie Baye, the film — directed by Simon Curtis — ramped up the high-society hi-jinx, with sumptuous weddings, luxurious trips to the south of France and the rather meta inclusion of a silent era Hollywood film being shot in Downton itself.

To celebrate the launch of A New Era on home entertainment (it is being released on Blu-Ray and a collector’s edition DVD on July 5), The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the lord of the manor himself, Hugh Bonneville, who discussed rumors of Downton Abbey returning to TV and why he thought that the latest film was a “good note...

Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Lily James, Fifi Hart, and Oliver Barker in Downton Abbey (2010)
The “Downton Abbey” saga continues in the sequel film “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” which finds the cadre of characters coming up against Hollywood itself when a film production sets up shop at Downton.

After six series on television, creator Julian Fellowes took his upstairs/downstairs story of the goings-on at a sprawling English estate to the big screen with the aptly titled 2019 film “Downton Abbey.” The story continues to unfold in the sequel, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” which takes place in 1928 – nearly two decades after the series first began.

Given the popularity of the show and now film franchise, many may be wondering what kinds of viewing options are available for “Downton Abbey 2” and when or if it might be streaming. Everything you need to know about the new film is outlined below.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.

There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.

Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ Film Review: Plenty of Cozy but Not Much Drama in This For-Fans-Only Sequel
Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Hugh Dancy, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Nicol, Douglas Reith, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Robert James-Collier, Michelle Dockery, Harry Hadden-Paton, Laura Haddock, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Laura Carmichael, and Michael Fox in Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)
This review of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” was first published April 25, 2022.

The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, was an all-subplots-no-plot affair in which the most troubling dramatic question was who would peel the potatoes when the King and Queen came to dinner. It must have been difficult to make a sequel that was even more trivial, and yet the team behind “Downton Abbey: A New Era” has managed it.

Written once again by Julian Fellowes, the creator of the escapist toffs-and-staff television series, the film opens with a wedding and goes on to feature a death, a birth and a proposal (not in that order), and yet it leaves the impression that nothing whatsoever has happened.

The film hops back and forth between two storylines, if that’s not stretching the definition of “storyline.” In one of these, the aged Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) announces that she has...

‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ Review: It’s Time to Say Goodbye, but Not to Everyone
Image
“Downton Abbey: A New Era” is bookended by a wedding and a funeral. In between, a good deal happens: Babies are born and paternities questioned, long-simmering romances clinched and fresh ones set to bloom; an excursion takes a fraction of the family to France while a film crew keeps the rest of them busy back home. It all adds up to rather more than audiences of 2019’s standalone “Downton Abbey” feature must have expected, if only because the earlier film seemed conspicuously uninterested in starting anything new.

That’s the trouble with television — from a film critic’s perspective, at least. Movies are by their nature story-obsessed — plot-driven locomotives, compelled by conflict, engineered to reach a tidy resolution of some kind within two hours or so. On TV, on the other hand, once a small-screen world has been established, it’s designed to remain open-ended from episode to episode and season to season,...

‘The World of Tomorrow’ Wins at Series Mania, ‘The Baby,’ ‘Fire Dance’ Nab Acting Awards
Image
Netflix and Arte’s musical show “Le Monde de Demain” (“The World of Tomorrow”) took the top prize in the International Competition of television festival Series Mania at the event’s awards ceremony Friday.

The series, created by Katell Quillévéré, Hélier Cisterne – both also directing – Vincent Poymiro and David Elkaïm, takes a look at the birth of the French hip-hop movement in the 1980s. Made with the collaboration of Laurent Rigoulet and the participation of Kool Shen, JoeyStarr and DJ Détonateur S, it was described by the organizers as “a personal chronicle about a Parisian suburban youth reaching adulthood, claiming its own space in a new France, a country to reinvent.”

In the acting categories, Michelle De Swarte was noticed for her role in the U.K.’s “The Baby,” produced by Sky, HBO and Ocs, while Israeli actor Yehuda Levi impressed the jurors with his performance in “Fire Dance,...

‘My Best Part’ Review: An All Too Twee Character Study Tug-of-War Between Melancholy and Jealousy
Image
To say “My Best Part,” the directorial debut of “Call My Agent” assistant Nicolas Maury, revels in cringe-worthy moments is, perhaps, an understatement. The opening moments alone find a bowl-cut-sporting Jérémie (Maury) flummoxed by the very straightforward Gps directions spouted at him by his phone. Jérémie, you see, is a bit of a mess. A lot of a mess, actually. And, faced with the prospect of going left, the camera swivels alongside him, letting us take this frail waif of an adult man head on.

It’s such a laughable, nothing of a crisis — especially for someone on his way to group therapy, where he hopes to curb the gnawing jealousy that’s eroding the relationship with his dashing boyfriend — that you instantly know what Maury is grappling with. Here’s the kind of melancholy young man who might find himself at home in a late-19th-century sentimental German tale,...

Peter Dinklage’s Singing ‘Cyrano,’ ‘The Godfather’ 50th Anniversary & Oscar Shorts Enter Parched Market For New Releases – Specialty Preview
Image
Joe Wright’s Cyrano twirls onto 797 screens, the highest-profile specialty release in weeks (as the market awaits Focus Features The Outfit with Mark Rylance and Sony Pictures Classics Mothering Sunday). But the well reviewed period musical romance from Uar starring Peter Dinklage is landing in a tough place. Industry estimates anticipate a low single digit opening given the inconsistent reception for movie musicals and the fact that its key older demos, especially women, have been the slowest to return to theaters.

Cyrano is based on Edmond Ronstand’s late 19th century drama Cyrano de Bergerac – itself loosely based on a French nobleman known for bold adventures and a large nose. It premiered at Telluride last year, had a weeklong LA theatrical run in Dec. and garnered an Oscar nomination for Costume Design (and BAFTA nom for Outstanding British Film of the Year). It’s 86% Certified Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Thibault de Montalembert, Liliane Rovère, Assaad Bouab, Fanny Sidney, Camille Cottin, Nicolas Maury, Laure Calamy, Grégory Montel, and Stéfi Celma in Call My Agent! (2015)
‘My Best Part’ Film Review: Nicholas Maury Directs and Stars in a Character Study Both Absurd and Melancholic
Thibault de Montalembert, Liliane Rovère, Assaad Bouab, Fanny Sidney, Camille Cottin, Nicolas Maury, Laure Calamy, Grégory Montel, and Stéfi Celma in Call My Agent! (2015)
Jérémie is having a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad week. First, he’s run out of a “Jealousy Anonymous” meeting. Then, his boyfriend, hunky veterinarian Albert dumps him, precisely because of said jealousy. He’s been fired from his dream acting role and gave himself a black eye bumping into a wall while running away from another director, Sylvie, who is in the throes of her own breakdown.

To top it off, his father, who left his mother for another woman, has died by suicide. Desperate for love, desperate for a job, and just plain desperate, Jérémie makes his way from Paris to his mother’s countryside rental home near Saint-Auvent, seeking comfort and catharsis of some sort.

This is the premise of Maury’s directorial debut, “My Best Part,” which he co-wrote with Maud Ameline and Sophie Fillières. This funny, strange, and elusive character study is a film unlike any other,...

Green Eyes, They’re Crying: Maury Mines Sorrow in Tragicomic Debut

Actor Nicolas Maury crafts his own starring vehicle in My Best Part (Garçon chiffon) as a Parisian actor whose professional and personal lives suddenly crumble, partially thanks to his own strangulation of them. Co-written with Maud Ameline and Sophie Fillieres and starring the esteemed Nathalie Baye, it’s an interesting portrait of a queer artist and his doting mother which unexpectedly veers into examinations of unexpected character flaws instead of mining all the predictable tropes considering the narrative parameters.…...

Nothing in life is sure, except that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will certainly be bringing more drama from our favorite British family.

The “Downton Abbey” sequel follows Julian Fellowes’ 2019 film and six seasons on BBC. While plot details have remained under wraps, we do spot the Crawleys visiting a new villa in the South of France, which Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) is said to have inherited. Fans are also expecting to learn more about Violet’s past in the latest installment.

Returning stars include Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Jim Carter.

Meanwhile, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West make their “Downton” debuts as new characters.

Creator Fellowes previously described the sequel as following Lady Mary (Dockery) as she takes over the duties for Lady Violet following her illness. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s,...
