Grey Matter Review: Emotional Depth in Everyday Moments
Image
Grey Matter arrives at a moment when intimate family stories are shifting toward raw emotional honesty. Chloe (Eloise Smyth) drifts through the end of her teenage years—ditching swim practice, floundering at work and locked in the usual high‑school restlessness—until her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis forces an abrupt realignment of her priorities.

That turning point propels Chloe into the role of caregiver for Peg (Stephanie Beacham), upending the summer she expected and reshaping every family ritual. Arabella Burfitt‑Dons and screenwriter Elizabeth Hrib guide us through that shift with a mix of playful warmth and quiet ache, threading light moments—Peg’s scooter escapades, impromptu therapy quips—through scenes of startling vulnerability.

Tonally, Grey Matter balances its coming‑of‑age arc with the weight of responsibility. It never wallows, yet never glosses over the sting of each forgotten name or misplaced photograph. Eloise Smyth grounds Chloe’s resistance in precise,...

This actress and author was married to two Star Trek actors
Image
It could be said that Patricia Herd had her very own Star Trek convention. The actress and author, who is now 90 years old, was married to two prolific character actors, both of whom appeared on Star Trek. She’s also worked on various films and television shows with other performers in the franchise.

Born as Patricia Ann Crowder, she was married to Joseph Ruskin from 1968 to 1979 and Richard Herd from 1980 to 2020, when he died. Ruskin guest starred as Galt in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Gamesters of Triskelion,” and later recurred as the Klingon, Tumek, in the Deep Space Nine episodes “The House of Quark” and “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places.” He also appeared as a Cardassian in DS9’s “Improbable Cause,” a Vulcan in the Voyager hour “Gravity,” and a Suliban doctor in “Broken Bow,” which served as the pilot for Enterprise.

Grey Matter review – feelgood Alzheimer’s film is well-meaning life-lesson comedy
Stephanie Beacham
Stephanie Beacham is reduced to comic foil in this cliche-ridden tale of the bond that forms between an ailing woman and her grumpy granddaughter

‘You’ve totally got one of those inspirational quote calendars, haven’t you?” says teenaged Alzheimer’s carer Chloé (Eloise Smyth) in her therapy session. “No, I’ve got three of them,” replies her counsellor. That about sums up this well-meaning but hapless sub-Hallmark comedy-drama – whose attempts to sweeten the subject matter with humour only serve to direct it towards every cliche-branch on its way down the tree of trite life lessons.

Chloé is your typical feckless sixth-former, busy warring with her mum Eileen (Elizabeth Berrington) and bunking off her swimming training. After her grandma Peg (former Dynasty actor Stephanie Beacham) forgets to put the chicken in the oven one day and Eileen moves her into her own home, the youngster is drafted in as an impromptu carer.

Duchess | Trailer released for Neil Marshall action thriller, disc release October
Natalie Mendoza, Shauna Macdonald, Saskia Mulder, Alex Reid, Nora-Jane Noone, and MyAnna Buring in The Descent (2005)
The Descent director Neil Marshall returns with action thriller Duchess, starring Charlotte Kirk. Here’s the first trailer for the movie.

Neil Marshall made his name with a string of successful horror films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent. The latter is often considered one of the best, most terrifying horror films of the 2000s. Marshall was only involved with the sequel as an executive producer, though.

He then ventured into science fiction with 2008’s Doomsday followed by historical adventure Centurion. While he found little success with the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, he returned to his roots for the last couple of films, including 2020’s The Reckoning and 2022’s The Lair. He has also pivoted to the small screen in recent years, directing episodes of Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless and Lost In Space.

Now, he turns his hand to action with Duchess. The synopsis reads as follows:

From director Neil Marshall, Duchess follows a tough,...

Stars: Charlotte Kirk, Phillip Winchester, Stephanie Beacham, Colm Meany, Sean Pertwee | Written and Directed by Neil Marshall

A young crook known as Duchess (Charlotte Kirk) gets involved with the nefarious Robert (Phillip Winchester) and the underworld of diamond trafficking. Her wrong turns take her halfway across the world, and she ends up being left for dead when a deal quickly goes wrong. Duchess is quick to try and seek retribution, and that means taking everyone on.

The good thing — “thing,” not “things” — about Duchess is even just by watching the trailer, seeing a poster, or reading the cast list, you know exactly what type of movie you’re going to get. Unfortunately, that type is fairly unsavoury. Forget any Guy Ritchie film, Fight Club, or Layer Cake, this time, it’s never been a worse thing to be British. A smorgasbord of accents from across the Western Hemisphere, the Brits...

“Duchess” Movie Review: Aspiring to Emulate Guy Ritchie… but Falling Short
Image
“Duchess” is a movie directed by Neil Marshall starring Charlotte Kirk. With Philip Winchester, Colm Meaney and Stephanie Beacham.

Are you on the hunt for a comedic action thriller sprinkled with mafia gang elements? “Duchess” brings these well-trodden themes to the table, but this time with a twist: a female lead. Charlotte Kirk, portrayed by Scarlett Monaghan, steps into the spotlight.

“Duchess” is a film that attempts to encapsulate the essence of Guy Ritchie’s early works. It features gangsters, a diamond heist plot, a sprinkling of humor, and is set in the gritty, less privileged neighborhoods of London. The twist? The central character is a woman. However, while the aesthetic ambition mirrors Ritchie’s style, the execution falls significantly short. The film lacks the vigor and finesse that hallmark Ritchie’s movies.

Plot Summary

After a woman suffers a brutal beating, she sets out on a path of vengeance.

Duchess Review: This Dated & Derivative Revenge Thriller Doesn't Bother To Escape The Male Gaze
Image
Duchess' outdated script fails to subvert sexist tropes or deliver on the female empowerment promised. Despite trying to embrace female empowerment, the movie still falls prey to the male gaze. Scarlett's journey to anti-hero status is overshadowed by her dependence on a male savior.

If you've ever wondered what a remake of Pretty Woman written and directed by Guy Ritchie would look like, then Duchess (2024) is the film for you. The only problem is that Duchess contains none of the verve and vitality of Ritchie's early London gangster movies, and its gender politics often feel less progressive than the 34-year-old Julia Roberts movie. Co-written with star Charlotte Kirk, Neil Marshall's movie tells the story of Scarlett (Kirk), a lowly pickpocket who falls in love with diamond smuggling gangster Rob (Philip Winchester), until tragedy forces her to rise up the criminal ranks.

‘Duchess’ Review: Neil Marshall and Charlotte Kirk Shoot and Miss with This Guy-Ritchie-Wannabe Crime Thriller
Image
Neil Marshall seems to want what Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino had in the early aughts. For his latest outing, the once-promising English filmmaker behind horror films like “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent” scales back his interest in frights for a more straightforward tale of fights, but fails to land nearly every punch he throws. Rather than build on the template his aforementioned peers built on themselves, Marshall does nothing for the ensemble crime thriller genre other than play the hits, which would’ve been bearable had he actually done so on key and with some care or nuance.

Right from the get-go, “Duchess” unveils itself as paint-by-numbers contrivance with an in media res sequence that drops us into the middle of a scene between main character, Scarlett (Charlotte Kirk), and an unseemly goon trying to get his rocks off. A fight ensues, blood is spurt, the goon goes out the window,...

Daniel Davis briefly returned as Professor James Moriarty in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but he was only a projection from the mind of Data (Brent Spiner). Moriarty was first created by accident in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 3, "Elementary, Dear Data," when Data and his best friend Lt. When Geordi asked the computer of the USS Enterprise-d to create an adversary capable of defeating Data, the holographic Holmes villain, Moriarty, became self-aware in order to combat the android.

8 Tng Characters Who Can Still Appear In Star Trek Picard Season 3
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 2 - "Disengage"

The main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation is back for Star Trek: Picard season 3, but there are several recurring Tng characters that could, and should, still appear. So far, Picard season 3 has reunited Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) with Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). Meanwhile, on M'Talas Prime, Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) has returned to rescue Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) from the lair of a Ferengi gangster.

The rest of the Tng cast will soon be drawn into the plot involving Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and Jean-Luc Picard's son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers), though there are some notable absences. Both Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) aren't expected to appear in Picard season 3, as they had already appeared in season 2. Of course, both could still make surprise appearances.

‘Renegades’ Review
Image
Stars: Lee Majors, Louis Mandylor, Patsy Kensit, Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber, Danny Trejo, Michael Paré, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Brandon, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Daniel Zirilli

Renegades is one of those movies that on paper has all the makings of a solid direct to DVD hit. A sizeable cast of mid-tier names that you will not only know but also have a sort of nostalgic endearment toward and that’s a great thing for you guys because they do a huge service in elevating the material and hiding any problems. A story that while not exactly breaking any new ground is just this side of madcap shenanigans so that there’s a slight air of believability to its proceedings. We are talking London gangsters, low budgets and a cast and crew that doesn’t just believe in the project but are doing...

‘Renegades’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Lee Majors, Louis Mandylor, Patsy Kensit, Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber, Danny Trejo, Michael Paré, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Brandon, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Daniel Zirilli

Renegades, not to be confused with the 2017 action film of the same name, starts on a familiar enough note as retired Green Beret Major Carver getting on the wrong side of mob boss Goram. It seems Carver’s daughter Judy is a local politician and has been leading a clean up the streets campaign and making complaints about Goram’s activities. When Goram had his goons threaten her Carver got involved. And ends up beaten to death for his troubles.

When her father’s military buddies Burton, Peck, Woody, and Harris hear about it they know what needs to be done. These old soldiers are about to fight a new war on the streets of London.

Before The Haunting Of Bly Manor, There Was Marlon Brando's The Nightcomers
Image
Mike Flanagan threw viewers a bit of a curveball with the second entry in his "Haunting" anthology series, 2020's "The Haunting of Bly Manor." Where the show's revered first outing, 2018's "The Haunting of Hill House," is horror through and through, its mostly well-received but slightly more divisive second entry is really a gothic romance that just happens to include literal ghosts. Yes, I'm using what you might call the "Crimson Peak" defense, but it applies here all the same.

Perhaps even more than "Hill House," "Bly Manor" plays fast and loose with its source material. Mainly a retelling of Henry James' classic 1898 gothic horror novella "The Turn of the Screw," the series adds elements from James' other works while also filling in the gaps in the romance between doomed lovers Peter Quint and Miss Jessel prior to the story's events. Interestingly, though, it wasn't the first off-shoot of James' novella to do this.

Fists of fear: severed hands in films – ranked!
With the imminent release of the French animation J’ai Perdu Mon Corps – in which a hand tries to reconnect (literally) with its body – we hail some of the great severed appendages of cinema

The year is 1795 (mobcap alert!), and newlywed Stephanie Beacham finds herself at the business end of the Fengriffen family curse in a full-length feature from Amicus Productions, better known for its portmanteau horrors. No sooner have servants or doctors (Patrick Magee among them) announced their intention to tell us about the curse, than they are throttled by the lopped-off hand of an unfairly treated woodsman.

May 7th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include The Prodigy, St. Agatha, The Nightcomers
May 7th is a relatively quiet day of genre-related Blu-ray and DVD releases, so I’ll keep this installment of our ongoing home media column series on the short and sweet side. If you dig creepy kid horror and you happened to miss it in theaters earlier this year, Nicholas McCarthy’s The Prodigy comes home on Tuesday, and for those of you who might be more into nunsploitation stories, St. Agatha is set to arrive on both formats this week. Cult film fans can finally add The Nightcomers and The Man Who Haunted Himself (featuring Roger Moore) to their Blu-ray collections, and Hellboy II: The Golden Army is making its 4K debut on May 7th as well.

The Nightcomers

Two Children… Two Adults… One Unspeakable Crime! Captivating and disturbing, this highly intense psychological drama with its haunting, twisted notion of sexuality puts a new spin on the characters from Henry James’ celebrated ghost story,...

Between 1944 and 1992 Jack Clayton directed just nine movies but they included some of the most elegant yet clear-eyed films to come out of post-war Britain – from the hard-knock realism of Room at the Top to the broken-marriage reverie of The Pumpkin Eater. A man of letters as well as cinema, his relatively brief career was spent collaborating with writers like Wolf Mankowitz, Harold Pinter and Truman Capote.

Born in London, Michael Winner showed a talent for free-wheeling and mildly racy movies like The Girl-Getters and I’ll Never Forget What’s ‘isname – cheeky entertainments that helped define the myth of sexy swinging London for stateside audiences.

It was in the early 70s that Winner began to traffic in distinctly American product like Chato’s...

The Satanic Rites of Dracula
Hammer’s Dracula goes out with a whimper in this final Chris Lee-Peter Cushing vampire opus, which posits the Prince of Darkness as a super-mogul super-villain (with insufficient infrastructure). He’s battling Scotland Yard, MI5 and his old nemesis Van Helsing, while still arranging ritual sacrifices. And don’t forget the quartet of vampire babes he keeps in the cellar.

Dracula A.D. 1972
Dracula and Van Helsing seem more than a little confused, fighting the good fight of virtue against evil in a modern setting dominated by painful Mod fashions and flaky pop rock ‘n’ roll. Hammer’s desperation bid to make itself ‘relevant’ at least gives us Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, who keep the show on the rails despite the disastrous concept. The two leading ladies are favorites as well.

Classic BBC drama Tenko to premiere on True Entertainment channel this May
One of the most ambitious television dramas of the 1980s has found a new home on True Entertainment. It should also find a new audience there, as it has done continuously since its final Reunion special aired in 1985, bringing the four year run to a close. It began as something of a revelation to many, choosing to tell the stories of a group of women during the Second World War. With so many movies and television production telling and re-telling the stories centering around men during the war Tenko’s initial success proved that there were many more stories to tell.

The series starred Stephanie Beachem, Stephanie Cole and Doctor Who’s Louise Jameson, along with Jean Anderson, Patricia Lawrence and well known comedy actor Burt Kwowk as Major Yamauchi. It dramatised the stories of women prisoners of the Japanese, taken after the Fall of Singapore in 1942, and how their...

Produced by Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg, the movie’s success inspired the New York-born duo to pack up shop and move to England where they founded Amicus Productions.
