Cape Fear TV series: Amy Adams to star with Javier Bardem
Image
At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now, Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner – and Deadline reports that Amy Adams (Man of Steel) has signed on to star in and executive produce the series!

Adams joins the previously announced cast member Javier Bardem, who is set to play the villainous Max Cady...

Amy Adams To Star In & EP Apple TV+’s ‘Cape Fear’ Alongside Javier Bardem
Image
Multi-Emmy and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams will star in and executive produces the Apple TV+ series Cape Fear, from Nick Antosca, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Adams will star opposite Javier Bardem who also exec produces.

Cape Fear is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners — which inspired the 1962 feature of the same name directed by J. Lee Thompson from storyboards devised by original director Alfred Hitchcock — and the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese.

The 10-episode series greenlit in November, is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. In Cape Fear, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Amanda (Adams) and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (played by Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.

Javier Bardem To Lead Cape Fear TV Series From Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese And Nick Antosca
Image
Javier Bardem is a wonderful actor, a man whose filmography is filled with a diverse array of characters whose appearances span the genre spectrum. He is also, it would be fair to say, an actor who's really good at playing villainous psychopaths — be it No Country For Old Men's Anton Chigurh, Skyfall's Silva, Pirates Of The Caribbean's Captain Salazar, or Lyle, Lyle Crocodile's mendacious Hector P. Valenti. And according to Deadline, another unhinged wrong'un is now in Bardem's sights, as he has signed on to play the notorious killer Max Cady in the latest retooling of Cape Fear, which Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Nick Antosca are currently setting up at Apple TV.

Created by The Act's Nick Antosca and set to be executive produced by Spielberg and Scorsese (as well as Bardem), this latest take on Cape Fear — previously adapted from John D. MacDonald's book...

Javier Bardem Starring in ‘Cape Fear’ TV Series from Producers Spielberg and Scorsese
Image
The 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald was adapted twice for the big screen with both 1962’s Cape Fear and 1991’s Cape Fear, and the tale is next headed to the small screen for a television series from writer/showrunner Nick Antosca (“Channel Zero”).

THR reports today that Javier Bardem (“Monsters”) will star in the brand new Cape Fear television series, which hails from exec producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Bardem is set to play the villain of the piece, the sinister Max Cady.

Apple+ has already greenlit the project with a series order.

The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The 10-episode series is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. The broad strokes of the story and the characters remain the same as the film versions as happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden face a...

Geena Davis on Paving the Way for America’s First Female President
Image
An aging Commander in Chief faces health struggles, and as a result, his younger, female vice-president ascends. That is, of course, the story of the 2024 presidential election in which Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee, replacing an ailing Joe Biden. But it also happens to be a TV show plot – nearly 20 years ago.

The series, Commander in Chief, which premiered in 2005, starred Geena Davis as the first female vice president in American history, selected to help an older, white male political candidate appeal to other constituencies. Sound familiar? There are notable differences between the political fiction of the show and the political realities of the 2024 race, however. For one, fictional President Teddy Bridges is a Republican, while Mackenzie, portrayed by Davis, is an Independent. Oh, and in the show (spoiler alert!) the president dies, leading to the first female Commander in Chief.

The show was initially a hit with audiences,...

When Hollywood First Dreamed Up a Woman President
Image
The election of the first female U.S. president was played for laughs when Kisses for My President hit theaters six decades ago.

Directed by Curtis Bernhardt, the Warner Bros. film stars Polly Bergen as President Leslie McCloud, who navigates relations with Soviets and a dictator in Central America. Meanwhile, her husband, Thad (Fred MacMurray), struggles to accept his role. The movie’s 60th anniversary — it was released Aug. 21, 1964 — arrives during the Democratic National Convention as Vice President Kamala Harris aims to become the first female commander in chief.

THR‘s review called Kisses for My President a “topical, romantic farce”: “It considers the problems of having a female president, not only for the lady, but for her husband, who must fill the functions normally assumed by the ‘first lady.'”

At the end of the movie, Leslie learns she’s pregnant after fainting in the White House and resigns.

Review: John Waters’s Musical Rom-Com Cry-Baby on Kl Studio Classics 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
John Waters’s Cry-Baby is the ideal companion piece to the filmmaker’s 1988 hit Hairspray. That film takes place in the early ’60s, against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, and deals in a lighthearted fashion with thorny issues of racial segregation, while Cry-Baby uses its mid-’50s setting to poke fun at class conflict in staid Eisenhower-era Baltimore. And both films are perfectly realized period pieces awash with the music of their respective eras: Hairspray focusing on soul and R&b, Cry-Baby packed with catchy rockabilly and doowop numbers.

Cry-Baby focuses on Wade Walker (Johnny Depp), the leader of a redoubtable gang of “drapes,” a Baltimorean spin on the greasers of the time. Events begin to echo Romeo and Juliet once Cry-Baby, who’s known for driving girls crazy for the way he’s able to shed a single tear, makes a play for Allison (Amy Locane), the...

Classic Robert De Niro Thriller Being Remade As TV Series by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese
Image
Cape Fear, based on the novel by John D. MacDonald, is being developed into a TV series by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, with showrunner Nick Antosca attached. The series will be a contemporary thriller that explores America's fascination with true crime, focusing on a married couple of attorneys whose lives are disrupted when a notorious killer is released from prison. The project is still in the early stages.

Based on the 1957 novel 'The Executioners' by John D. MacDonald, Cape Fear has seen two film iterations over the years. One in 1962 which starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen, and another in 1991 which featured Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange. Now it looks as if the novel will be making its way to the small screen thanks to executive producers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who are currently shopping the idea for a Cape Fear series around Hollywood.

‘Cape Fear’ TV Series From Spielberg, Scorsese and Nick Antosca in Development
Image
A TV series based on Universal’s “Cape Fear” is in the works with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Nick Antosca.

The show, which is in development from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin, would mark Scorsese and Spielberg’s first ever TV project together. They executive produce with Antosca, who is also the showrunner and created true crime and horror dramas like “Channel Zero,” “The Act” and “Brand New Cherry Flavor.” Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.

Here’s the logline for the “Cape Fear” re-imagining: “A storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison. A tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.”

“Cape Fear” Series From Nick Antosca, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese To Take Unconventional Approach
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
In 1991, director Martin Scorsese remade 1962’s Cape Fear, based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald, for Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. It appears they’re returning to the IP: Deadline reports that Scorsese and Spielberg have teamed with “Channel Zero” creator Nick Antosca for a new series that’ll take an unconventional approach.

“Cape Fear” marks the first ever TV collaboration for Scorsese and Spielberg, who are executive producing the project from creator, executive producer and showrunner Nick Antosca.

The series is described as a “a tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. In it, a storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison.”

In every iteration of Cape Fear so far, the plot sees a lawyer’s family tormented by the criminal he helped put in prison.

Bo Goldman, Oscar-Winning Writer of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ Script, Dies at 90
Image
Screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for his scripts to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Melvin and Howard” and was among a select group of film scribes including Robert Towne and William Goldman considered to be among that generation’s best, died Tuesday in Helendale, Calif., his son-in-law, director Todd Field, confirmed to the New York Times. He was 90.

Goldman was also Oscar nominated for 1993’s “Scent of a Woman.”

The 1976 Oscar he shared with Lawrence Hauben for co-adapting Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a particularly impressive achievement considering that “Cuckoo’s Nest” represented only Goldman’s second screenplay and the first to be produced. The win for adapted screenplay was part of a sweep for the film that also included victories for best picture, director, actor and actress. No movie had won those five awards since 1934’s “It’s a Wonderful...

Burt Bacharach, Legendary Pop Composer, Dies at 94
Image
Songwriter, composer, producer and arranger Burt Bacharach, a dominant force in American popular music for half a century, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 94.

Bacharach’s publicist Tina Brausam revealed the news on Thursday.

As a tunesmith, the nonpareil melodist Bacharach found fame in every medium.

His songs — many of them written with lyricist Hal David — became chart-topping successes, particularly in the hands of vocalist Dionne Warwick. Among ’60s songwriting duos, only Lennon-McCartney rivaled Bacharach-David in terms of commercial and artistic achievement. Bacharach collected six Grammys as a writer, arranger and performer from 1967-2005.

His music was ubiquitous on screens both big and small in the ’60s and ’70s, and he was recognized by the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his work on “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “Arthur” (1981). He collected a 1971 Emmy for a TV recital of his work.

Escape from Fort Bravo

William Holden and Eleanor Parker strike sparks out on the ruddy mesas, while Sturges has a field day with the amazing Death Valley scenery and a highly original action scene. ‘Realistic escapism?’ It’s like a formula for future action cinema. Shira Haas on her ‘Unorthodox’ arc: ‘It’s really about surviving’ [Watch]
Image
At 25, Shira Haas would be the youngest Best Movie/Limited Actress winner at the Emmys in 50 years, since a 23-year-old Patty Duke prevailed for the 1970 movie “My Sweet Charlie.” 1958 and 1978 are the only other years that the award has gone to actresses in their 20s: 27-year-old Polly Bergen for “Playhouse 90” and 29-year-old Meryl Streep for “Holocaust” respectively. Haas broke through with her performance in “Unorthodox,” which was her American television debut. The four-episode miniseries from Netflix follows Haas’s character Esty Shapiro as she runs off to a new life in Berlin, leaving behind her family and ultra-Orthodox Jewish upbringing in New York.

SEEour interview with nominated writer Anna Winger.

Speaking to Gold Derby this spring (watch the exclusive interview above), Haas says about her journey, “It’s so hard to leave a place, especially when it’s the only thing she knows. Those are the only people that she also loves.

Doris Day Appreciation: Why Did Oscar Elude A Shining Star Of So Many Talents?
Image
Whenever the subject of who should get Honorary Oscars — or the Governors Awards, as they now are known — comes up, there has not been a single year, not one, when Doris Day’s name was not at the top of the speculation. But it never happened. The Academy’s Board of Governors never even went the Debbie Reynolds route by voting this renowned animal-rights activist the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, perhaps because it has human in its title. Although she often referred to herself as the girl singer in the band, her remarkable movie career spanned a couple of decades during the 50’s and 60’s, and about three dozen movies — frequently in what might be known as Doris Day movies — and maybe that is why the Academy never honored her. Or perhaps they just knew this star, who retreated from the business almost entirely, never would show up. Still, in her big-screen prime,...

Carl Reiner
Carl Reiner Is the Oldest Emmy Nominee Ever at 96, but He’s Still Got Work to Do (Video)
Carl Reiner
Carl Reiner has accumulated lots of plaudits over his seven decades in the entertainment industry as a writer, producer, director and actor. But alongside his work on the seminal television series “Your Show of Shows” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and his directing on films that include “The Jerk” and “All of Me,” Reiner can now claim another designation: At 96, he’s the oldest person ever nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Reiner’s goal, in a way, is to always have goals: He wakes up every day and starts writing, churning out a string of books over the past few years. And now he’s the narrator of the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast,” which chronicles the lives of a number of vibrant people in their 90s, including Reiner.

The category of Outstanding Narrator also includes 71-year-old Charles Dance, 81-year-old Morgan Freeman...

Emmys: Carl Reiner On Trump, Samantha Bee & His HBO Doc ‘If You’re Not In The Obit, Eat Breakfast’
Carl Reiner
At the age of 96, Carl Reiner remains impressively engaged with life.

He tweets daily to his 237K Twitter followers, often in criticism of President Trump. A tweet he posted on Friday garnered 12,000 likes: “I ask: Is there anything more upsetting than having our blow-hard, self serving President meet with foreign leaders and, suppossedly [sic], on our behalf, make deals that make him and his billionaire friends richer?”

And he keeps on top of the news, like the recent controversy over late night TV host Samantha Bee, who earned widespread censure after she called Ivanka Trump the “c” word.

“I know Samantha Bee, and I know she’s not a racist or anything,” Reiner tells Deadline. “She’s a very good soul, and she made a mistake and she apologized profusely, and it’s a little different than what Roseanne did. It’s quite a bit different because Samantha Bee’s heart is in the right place.

Examining Hollywood Remakes: Cape Fear
Our series on remakes continues with a graphic reimagining of a moody suspense thriller from the 1960s. This week, Cinelinx looks at Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear (1991).

Both versions of this film have very similar plots—based on the novel “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald—but the approach of the respective directors are so different that the two films become very distinct. The original 1962 version of Cape Fear is a Hitchcockian suspense drama, while the 1991 remake is more of a slasher film. Both films tell the story of an obsessed ex-con/rapist who manipulates the loopholes of the law in order to stalk a man he hates. It’s interesting to see the same story interpreted so differently.

The 1962 version starred Gregory Peck, one of the greatest actors of his—or any other—generation, along with Robert Mitchum, who is wonderfully menacing as the villain. It was directed by J. Lee Thompson,...

Scorsese (Costly) Short Featuring the Director, DiCaprio, and De Niro Has Been Pulled from Venice Festival
'The Audition' poster with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. Martin Scorsese short 'The Audition' pulled from Venice Film Festival No major international film festival is worth its mainstream U.S. media salt unless there's at least one screening featuring the latest work of a major Hollywood name. The Venice Film Festival is surely no exception, especially as it's the year's final internationally renowned European movie fest, held shortly before the fall – i.e., awards – movie season begins. Well, one work by a top Hollywood name will no longer be available at Venice: The Audition, a short film directed by and featuring veteran Martin Scorsese, has been pulled out. "We have just been informed by the production that due to unexpected technical problems the film could not be here in time," festival organizers said in a statement earlier today, Sat., Aug. 29, '15. According to The Hollywood Reporter,...

From Veep to 24: Pop Culture's Female Politicians Ranked
Hillary Clinton
Last week, CBS premiered the new political drama Madam Secretary, which stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth Faulkner McCord, the U.S. Secretary of State. It's hardly a far-fetched concept, as we've seen three female secretaries of state since 1997: Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. But it's nonetheless rare to see a fictional universe with a woman in one of the nation's top three positions of political power. (Yep, even in fake realities, politics is a man's game.) And historically speaking, Hollywood has played it as a joke more often than not. So which fictional female presidents, vice presidents...

Desperate Housewives Emmy-Nominated Actress Lost Her Fortune Following Stock-Market Crash
Polly Bergen: 'Desperate Housewives' Emmy nominee; winner for 'The Helen Morgan Story' (photo: Felicity Huffman, Doug Savant, and Polly Bergen in 'Desperate Housewives') (See previous article: "Polly Bergen: Actress on Richard Nixon 'Enemies List'.") Polly Bergen began her lengthy — and to some extent prestigious — television career in 1950, making sporadic appearances in anthology series. She won an Emmy for Best Actress in a Single Performance – Lead or Supporting — beating Julie Andrews, Helen Hayes, Teresa Wright, and Piper Laurie — for playing troubled torch singer Helen Morgan (Show Boat) in the 1957 Playhouse 90 episode "The Helen Morgan Story," featuring veteran Sylvia Sidney as Morgan's mother. Curiously, Bergen's retelling of Helen Morgan's story was broadcast the same year that Ann Blyth starred in Michael Curtiz's Morgan biopic. Also titled The Helen Morgan Story, the film focused on the relationship between the singer and a...

Politically Active Actress Bergen Made into Nixon's 'Enemies List'
Polly Bergen: Actress on Richard Nixon's 'enemies list' (image: Polly Bergen publicity shot ca. late 1950s) (See previous article: "Polly Bergen Movies: First U.S. Woman President.") As discussed in the previous post, despite its deceptively progressive premise — the first United States woman president as a palpable reality — Kisses for My President, written by veteran Paramount screenwriter Claude Binyon (Search for Beauty, The Gilded Lily) and newcomer Robert G. Kane (whose sole other movie credit was the poorly received Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Western Villain), was an unabashedly reactionary, "traditional family values" effort. Ironically, Polly Bergen, for her part, was a liberal-minded, politically active Democrat. At around the time Kisses for My President was released, Bergen, along with Gregory Peck, James Garner, and other Hollywood personalities, publicly came out against California's Proposition 14, a 1964 ballot initiative that would have nullified the Rumford Fair Housing Act, thus paving the way for...

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
“South Park” aired a Washington Redskins-skewering commercial during the Redskins game “When I named my company Washington Redskins, it was out of deep appreciation for your team and your people,” Cartman says in the one-minute ad for the new “South Park” season that will likely include a parody of the team’s name. “The Daily Show” created a showdown between Native Americans and Redskins fans Four diehard fans of the Washington Redskins agreed to be mocked by correspondent Jason Jones for a Sept. 13 taping. But they were surprised to be confronted by a larger group of Native American activists. “This goes way beyond mocking. Poking fun is one thing, but that’s not what happened,” said one of the fans who agreed to “The Daily Show” appearance. “The Daily Show” has yet to air the segment. Eric the Actor, a diehard “American Idol” fan who parlayed phoning the Howard Stern show into TV guest roles,...

A True Maverick: Top 10 Films of James Garner (1928-2014)
Indeed it is sad news to acknowledge the passing of Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actor James Garner (1928-2014). The Hollywood icon Garner has endured a remarkable show business career during a five-plus decade stretch as he has entertained generations of TV and film audiences throughout the ages. Upon the death of this immensely likable leading man on both the small and big screen many are probably wondering about their mortality at this point. After all, you either grew up with James Garner as a peer or spent your childhood watching him in your living rooms on the boob tube or at the local movie theater.

Although the majority of folks associate Garner with television from his first western series Maverick in the 1950′s to his landmark role as ex-con Pi Jim Rockford in the 1970′s The Rockford Files (some teens and young adults may recall his brief stint as grandfather Jim...

Classic Western Star on TCM
Randolph Scott movies: From Westerns to Cary Grant / Irene Dunne comedy Handsome, granite-faced Randolph Scott is Turner Classic Movies’ next great choice in its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. Monday, August 19, 2013, is Randolph Scott Day, which begins and ends with Westerns. That shouldn’t be surprising, for although Scott was initially cast in a variety of roles and movie genres (including Westerns), he became exclusively a Western star in the late ’40s, sticking to that genre until his retirement in 1962 following the release of Sam Peckinpah’s elegiac Ride the High Country, which TCM will be showing on Monday evening. Joel McCrea at his very best and Mariette Hartley co-star. (See “On TCM: Randolph Scott Westerns.”) (Photo: Randolph Scott ca. 1945.) Many of Scott’s Westerns were routine fare, including Badman’s Territory (1946), which kicks off Randolph Scott Day. Some, however, have become classics of the genre, especially his late...
