There are certain movies that over the years have become film industry shorthand for box office fiascos: "Heaven's Gate," "Ishtar," "Waterworld," "Cutthroat Island," and so forth. But in truth, I have no idea why "Waterworld" keeps getting name-checked as a massive bomb, seeing as it eventually broke even and inspired a massively popular stunt show at Universal Studios Hollywood. Also irksome: The worst of these movies, "Cutthroat Island," is at least packed with jaw-droppingly elaborate spectacle, while "Heaven's Gate" and "Ishtar" are genuinely great movies from two of the most talented directors of their era (Michael Cimino and Elaine May).

At a Cannes press conference for his new film “Highest 2 Lowest” on Tuesday, Spike Lee reflected on his five collaborations with Denzel Washington — and said he should have won the best actor Oscar in 1993 over Al Pacino.

“‘Malcolm X,’ what he did with that film was amazing,” Lee said. “And no disrespect to my brother Al Pacino, I love him. But Denzel, in my opinion, should have won.”

After being repeatedly delayed (and retitled), The Alto Knights is set to hit theaters next month. Robert De Niro, who leads the crime biopic as feuding mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, recently revealed what drew him to star in the movie.

The Alto Knights reunites De Niro with Barry Levinson, who directed him in 2008's What Just Happened, and Nicholas Pileggi, who scripted Goodfellas and Casino and executive produced The Irishman, all three starring the fan-favorite actor. However, it wasn't Levinson and Pileggi's involvement that convinced De Niro to sign on to The Alto Knights (then titled Wise Guys). Instead, De Niro told Empire that the chance of playing both Costello and Genovese is what drew him to the project.

Zero Day is set to hit Netflix on Feb. 20, but the new trailer will give subscribers an early sneak peek. The limited series is set in the aftermath of a devastating cyberattack on the United States, leading to mass casualties along with a slew of other major problems. John Ashton, the legendary character actor who played the curmudgeonly (but ultimately heroic) Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop movies, has died. No news yet on the cause of death, but his passing was confirmed by his manager to Variety. In addition to his role as Taggart, Ashton had a long and distinguished career on screen, with him also playing a memorable foil to Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in Midnight Run (directed by his Beverly Hills Cop director Martin Brest).

John Ashton has died. Ashton’s manager, Alan Somers, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Beverly Hills Cop star died on Thursday. No official cause of death has been announced. He was 76.

While he was best known for his role as Taggart — including in this year’s “Axel F” — Ashton’s career spanned more than 200 film, television and stage productions. He played Detective John Taggart in the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” films alongside Eddie Murphy before returning to the role in 2024.

In July Ashton told Nerds of Color that returning to the film franchise just felt right. “We developed the characters in the first one. Martin Brest gave us the freedom to run with it and develop our characters, and we grew and grew and grew and we became Taggart and Rosewood, and Axel, you know?” he said. “Going back to this one was like a family reunion, we just fell right back into it.

Per People, Lopez listed the date of separation as April 26, 2024, though she filed today, on Aug. 20, the second anniversary of their ceremony in Georgia, an extravagant wedding that followed a quickie Las Vegas elopement in July 2022. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after just over two years of marriage. Lopez filed on Tuesday, August 20, in L.A. County Superior Court, Variety confirms. The official separation date is listed as April 26.

Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, married in Las Vegas in July 2022 after re-sparking their relationship from two decades prior, which was dubbed “Bennifer” by tabloid publications at the time and was a fixation of their coverage in the early 2000s.

The two tied the knot again in a large ceremony in Georgia on August 20, 2022 — exactly two years ago.
