Jonathan Kaplan, who directed Jodie Foster to a best actress Oscar in The Accused and received five Emmy nominations for his work as a helmer and producer on ER, has died. He was 77.
Kaplan died Friday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with liver cancer, his daughter, Molly Kaplan, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a loving, supportive father,” she said.
Kaplan, whose parents both worked in show business and whose uncle was Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin, served an apprenticeship with famed B-movie producer Roger Corman and then directed the blaxploitation classic Truck Turner (1974), starring Isaac Hayes, Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols.
Kaplan also guided Michelle Pfeiffer to a best actress Oscar nomination in the 1960s-set Love Field (1992), and his directing résumé included the Shirley Muldowney biopic Heart Like a Wheel (1983), starring Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges; Bad Girls (1987), the distaff Western starring Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson,...

Quentin Tarantino has it locked in his mind that he can only direct ten feature films before retiring, so when he wrote a follow-up to his 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and felt that it wasn’t worthy of being his tenth and final movie, he was planning to scrap it. The script centered on Cliff Booth, the stuntman character Brad Pitt won an Oscar for bringing to life, so it’s understandable that Pitt really didn’t want to let go of the project. In a shocking turn of events, he was able to convince Tarantino to let another director bring the story to the screen: David Fincher, who previously directed Pitt in Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The movie, which is believed to be going by the title The Adventures of Cliff Booth, is now in production, and Pitt has been spotted on the set,...

The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden may be best known for his extensive role as Victor Newman in the long-running soap opera. However, alongside starring in Y&r, Eric Braeden also starred in the James Cameron blockbuster Titanic, portraying John Jacob Astor IV, the wealthiest passenger aboard the Titanic who died when the actual ship sank in 1912.
Braeden appeared on Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart's new podcast, Soapy, and told his fellow soap stars about the differences between working on a film set, such as Titanic, compared to The Young and the Restless (via People). The veteran Young and the Restless cast member finds movie sets boring, whereas on a soap opera set, everything moves faster. As he said of his time on Titanic, "It's bloody boring." Braeden then went on to explain how other projects are just too slow for him.

Nearly 40 years after director Paul Michael Glaser's The Running Manhit theaters, the movie is getting a remake. As a result, the original 1987 film, which was based on a story by Stephen King, is now available to stream for free on Tubi.
Per ComicBook, 1987's The Running Man was written by Steven E. de Souza and is set in a dystopian America. Before Glen Powell steps into the arena this fall, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cult classic The Running Man is getting a second wind — and this time, it’s free. Starting July 1, the 1987 dystopian action film will stream on Pluto TV, just in time for audiences to revisit (or discover) the original adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, released under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Back in the day, The Running Man was billed as a high-octane futuristic thrill ride starring one of the most bankable action heroes of all time. With a budget of $27 million and a worldwide gross of $38 million, it barely scraped by financially — a rare miss for Schwarzenegger during his ’80s dominance. But with Top Gun: Maverick star Powell suiting up for Edgar Wright’s much-hyped remake, the original is suddenly back in the pop culture bloodstream.

Deadline reports that Carla Gugino has joined the cast of The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the upcoming Netflix movie in which Brad Pitt will reprise his role from Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Pitt will naturally star as Cliff Booth, with the former stuntman reportedly embarking on a new career as a Hollywood fixer. Details on Gugino’s character haven’t been revealed. Other cast members include Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
It’s been said that Mateen’s character is modelled after Jim Brown, the iconic Football player who retired early to pursue an acting career, appearing in movies such as The Dirty Dozen. As for Debicki, the story calls for two key female roles: one who runs a bar and mud wrestling establishment, and the other who is a trophy wife. Debicki could play either of these roles, or perhaps a completely different one.

One of the most anticipated movies coming out this fall comes from contemporary English auteur Edgar Wright. Known for his kinetic style and genre-bending flair, Wright recently wrapped filming on The Running Man, an adaptation of a Stephen King book of the same name released under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
The film stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a desperate father who enters a deadly reality competition in a bid to provide for his family. However, Wright isn’t the first to take a crack at this story. The novel was first brought to the big screen in 1987, with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead and Paul Michael Glaser directing. Robert Aldrich's 1967 film "The Dirty Dozen" is often cited as one of the most masculine movies ever made. Set in 1944, it follows the travails of Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) as he is assigned to lead a 12-man platoon of ex-convicts and ultra-violent Army near-dropouts. Reisman is tasked with training up some of the worst and most horrible people in the Army, get them up to snuff, and lead them on a secret mission into a Nazi stronghold in France. The soldiers are all awful in one way or another, so their mission to kill Nazi higher-ups offers them something violently heroic to do with their tempers. The Dirty Dozen included notable actors like Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, and Donald Sutherland. Ernest Borgnine played a fellow general.
"The Dirty Dozen" was a huge success, earning over $45 million at the box office on a $5.3 million budget.

Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.

There is very little that is remarkable about Taylor Hackford's 2013 actioner "Parker" starring Jason Statham. The title character is, like so many action movie protagonists before him, defined largely by his taciturn and steely demeanor and doesn't have a lot of whimsy or personality beyond that. Parker is a thief, but he is defined by an unshakable code of ethics and believes in sticking to well laid-out plans. He's not a hothead or impulsive. In other words: he's kind of boring. It also doesn't help that "Parker" has a predictable plot stretched out across a dull screenplay. The film came and went without fanfare, a January release to its very core.
"Parker" made $46.9 million at the box office on a $35 million budget, which is a bomb on a Hollywood ledger. It was only lukewarmly received by critics, sporting a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 105 reviews). Peter Sobczynski's review for RogerEbert.

As Kansas City Chiefs players continue to process their lopsided loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl Lix, Hollywood insiders are watching to see whether Travis Kelce is ready to snag a coveted acting career.
The year has not quite gotten off to the start that Kelce might have expected. Although the star tight end — along with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the team — reached the Super Bowl with a chance to win a third straight championship, the Chiefs’ prolonged dominance saw some football fans turn on them or become convinced that refs give them more favorable calls. Kelce’s girlfriend Taylor Swift was booed at the Super Bowl by a seemingly pro-Eagles contingent, while Kelce himself caused a social media stir ahead of the big game after calling it a “great honor” to have President Donald Trump in the stadium.

Homer Simpson is a simple man. Sure, he loves his family, but beyond that, all he really needs to survive is beer, food and football. Over 36 seasons and nearly 800 episodes of The Simpsons, Homer has taken part in just about every sport ever — including the utterly ridiculous game of lacrosse — but the one he comes back to the most is football.
From entire pigskin-themed episodes like “Lisa the Greek,” “Sunday, Cruddy Sunday” and “Bart Star” to throwaway jokes while Homer watches TV, there have been hundreds of Simpsons gags about the NFL and football in general. That’s why, for Super Bowl Lix — which means 59, I checked — I enlisted a variety of Simpsons Facebook Groups and a few superfans to assemble the list below of 59 hilarious football moments from The Simpsons.

On Dec. 22, 1999, Warner Bros. released the Oliver Stone-directed NFL drama Any Given Sunday in theaters, where it went on to cross the $100 million mark globally. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Oliver Stone is one of the movies’ foremost portrayers of warfare, so it’s only logical he should turn his attention to those gladiators of sports, professional football players. Any Given Sunday is the result, a film loaded with cynicism and choking on overbearing imagery that nevertheless winds up buying into many of the myths surrounding the sport. Of two minds about nearly every issue the film tackles anyway, Stone further lets his point of view get smothered in high-impact action and turbocharged editing.
Jocks and sports-minded guys appear the most logical audience for Any Given Sunday, but even they can’t be blamed for recoiling from the visual assault. Starring Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz and...

Since the 1960s, action movies have given audiences some of the most iconic stories of all time, from '80s icons like Die Hard to modern masterpieces like John Wick. While the modern era has produced some of the genre's best films, audiences have decades of classic action flicks to choose from, including many that helped define them. The genre is one of the most versatile in Hollywood, something that has been true for decades.
When it comes to older action movies, the genre can be hit or miss, with the limitations of past decades forcing some movies to be too muted or campy, while others simply haven't aged well. Some films, however, remain a classic part of the genre, and have helped define cinema for the decades since their release. From stories about soldiers going behind enemy lines to hard-boiled detectives bringing down gangsters, the action genre has decades...

When Mars Attacks! released in December 1996, it appeared to have everything it needed to be a major hit. It was produced and directed by Tim Burton, fresh off a string of successful films, including Batman and Batman Returns. It had a unique and interesting plot that blended sci-fi, action, and nostalgia for 1950s pulp aesthetics. Perhaps most importantly, it featured a cast absolutely packed with established and upcoming stars. From Jack Nicholson to Michael J. Fox, Mars Attacks! was bursting with big names and talent. Unfortunately, all these elements weren't enough to bring the film commercial or critical success.
Despite being set up for success, Mars Attacks! proved to be a major disappointment. Receiving, at best, mixed reviews and failing at the box office, the sci-fi film marked a low point for Tim Burton's career. Just why it performed so poorly is still debated by critics today but, for whatever reason,...

Andrew Stevens pays loving but not hagiographic tribute to his late mother, famed actress Stella Stevens, in his documentary recently showcased at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. The film convincingly makes the case that its subject, best known for her performances in such pictures as The Poseidon Adventure and The Nutty Professor, is severely underrated, both as an actress and social activist. Stella Stevens: The Last Starlet aims to rectify that perception and, thanks to numerous clips of her work and effusive commentary by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Vivica A. Fox, it succeeds beautifully.
The filmmaker (who appears frequently) admits that his relationship with his mother was rocky, to say the least, in the early years. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Stevens got married at age 16 and had Andrew, her first and only child, six months later. The marriage soon dissolved, and when she moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career,...

Kemp Powers is adding serious star power to his upcoming feature film Lunik Heist, which will star Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, and John Mulaney. Powers directs Lunik Heist from his own script based on actual events. The story orbits around the American government’s plot to steal a Soviet spacecraft during a 1959 exposition in Mexico City. Edgar Wrights The Running Man is shaping up to be one of the finest Stephen King adaptations yet, at least when it comes to its cast. American singer and actor Trini Lopez played a significant role in the 1967 action movie The Dirty Dozen, but his character mysteriously vanished midway through the story. Based on the 1965 novel by E.M. Nathanson, The Dirty Dozen is set in 1944, during World War II, and depicts 12 soldiers being trained for a military mission ahead of the Normandy landings. The movie was a critical and commercial success and inspired three television sequels in the 1980s. A Dirty Dozen remake was announced in 2019, with David Ayer set to serve as director.
The Dirty Dozen received praise for its depiction of military combat during World War II and received four Oscar nominations in 1968, winning one for Best Sound Editing. Glen Powell has found his adversary in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of The Running Man, based on Stephen King's 1982 novel. Green Lantern has had a rough history on film. In 2011, Warner Bros. bet on the hero being their Iron Man; a B-lister underdog who could kick off a blockbuster franchise. "Green Lantern" starring Ryan Reynolds did not fly high so the character was almost completely absent from the DC Extended Universe. (None of the major Green Lanterns show up in either cut of "Justice League.")
Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios is again looking to make the Green Lantern Corps an early fixture of their DC Films. Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner in 2025's "Superman" and a "Lanterns" TV series is currently in development at HBO. A "True Detective" style murder mystery, "Lanterns" will star the two most famous comic Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart (not the one from "The Daily Show").

Mark Wahlberg's "Play Dirty" is based on the Parker novel series and could finally launch a successful franchise built around the anti-hero thief. Despite past adaptations, Parker as a character has not gained mainstream success due to his cold, humorless nature. Previous Wahlberg co-stars Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Robert Duvall have all starred in Parker movie adaptations.

Hollywood megastar Glen Powell is no stranger to reboots, remakes, and sequels. Having just come off the hugely successful summer blockbuster Twisters, he seemed to have come out of nowhere in 2022 thanks to Top Gun: Maverick, despite being in the business for nearly 20 years up to that point. Now, Powell is teasing his next project, Edgar Wrights The Running Man, calling it an amalgamation of Stephen Kings classic novel and the offbeat style of Wright.
Speaking with ScreenRant to promote The Best Mans Ghostwriter, an original podcast courtesy of Audible, Powell teased that hes been "doing a lot of sprinting" to get ready for The Running Man, which begins filming this fall. Jokes aside, Powell would go on to say that not only has he wanted to work with Wright for years now, but that the director of the Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy is bringing his own flair to the project.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell may have found their next collaboration. Several publications, citing industry insider Daniel Richtman as a source, have shared that Sweeney is being eyed to join Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King's dystopian novel, The Running Man. In April, Variety confirmed that Powell would lead the adaptation as Ben Richards. If Sweeney is to join the film, it will mark the second collaboration between the two following their sleeper hit Anyone But You. Given all the press that surrounded that film - most notably around Powell and Sweeney's chemistry - we know there'd be plenty of media buzz about their on-screen reunion.

The Running Man, the Stephen King classic dystopian novel, will be getting a remake by Edgar Wright soon, and star Glen Powell just offered an exciting update. Wrights project follows a lifelong mission to do a whole new adaptation of Kings book, and since he came on board to helm the remake, Wright has been clear about what he wants to do: not a remake of 1987s Arnold Schwarzenegger action film, but a new take of the material.
In an interview with IndieWire, Powell has now confirmed The Running Man is happening and begins shooting next fall. He also intends to finish his college degree at the University of Texas at the same time:
"Im not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular. Im basically going to be coming back because I have to finish up, but Im going to be shooting The Running Man in the fall.
