Universal Pictures is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Apollo 13, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Academy Award–winning masterpiece and one of the most gripping true stories ever brought to screen. On September 19, the film, produced by Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, returns to theaters nationwide, presented exclusively in IMAX from September 19-25 in its full-length theatrical version for the first time.
This special anniversary release offers audiences a chance to revisit the landmark drama about the most heart-stopping rescue mission in the history of America’s space program, presented in the most immersive format yet.
Released on June 30, 1995, Apollo 13 recounts the real-life events of April 1970, when an oxygen tank explosion aboard NASA’s third planned mission to the Moon transformed the flight into a harrowing battle for survival.

"Gentlemen, let's go home..." Universal has unveiled a brand new official trailer for the re-release of Apollo 13, celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. Directed by Ron Howard, this masterpiece space docu-drama tells the entirely true story of NASA's Apollo 13 Moon mission which went wrong & experienced a problem. The 3 astronauts on board and everyone down on Earth had to figure out a way to get them back safely and hope they could pull it off. And boy oh boy, did they. One of my all-time favorite space movies, featuring an all-time unforgettable score by James Horner (Rip) along with one of Tom Hanks greatest performances. I went to see it many times back in 1995. On September 19th, the film returns to theaters, presented exclusively in IMAX from September 19-25 in its full-length theatrical version for the first time ever. The 1995 classic Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Gary Sinise, turns 30 this year, and despite its minor scientific missteps, we still believe it’s one of the best space movies ever made! The Ron Howard directorial is based on the real-life aborted lunar mission of 1970.
And we follow Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise as they fight for survival after an onboard explosion makes their chances of returning to Earth slim to none. The space drama is adapted from Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger’s book titled Lost Moon, and while it may not score a perfect 10 in terms of scientific accuracy, the movie compensates for it in more than one way!

Tom Hanks In Apollo 13 (Photo Credit – Youtube)
Apollo 13’s 1995 release not only added another space-themed film to the canon but also set a new standard. Directed by Ron Howard, the film starred Tom Hanks as he took the mantle of an astronaut. The compelling yet true story of a NASA space mission drew immediate attention upon its release. Further, Apollo 13 presented a closer look at the complex interplay of human tenacity, survival, and resourcefulness under pressure.

Given the sad news that Gene Hackman, the most legendary of all actors, has passed away, tributes will (appropriately) be coming in non-stop. After all, he was the greatest of the greats, and the fact that he retired relatively early (back in 2004) adds to his mystique, as he went out at the top of his game. Given his rich legacy of work, everyone will no doubt be offering tributes to his best movies, like Unforgiven, The French Connection, The Royal Tenenbaums, and many more. Here at JoBlo, we’re gonna do something a little different and pay tribute to the star by singling out some of his lesser-seen films, hoping that maybe fans of his find something on this list they haven’t seen before and can enjoy for the first time!

Action films are one of the biggest box office draws today. Every year, more and more action flicks are released in theaters, and viewers can't get enough. And an integral part of an action film's historical success is it's ending.
Endings can make or break a movie, especially when it comes to the action genre. Either because of how incredibly it closes out the film, or because of what it means for the genre, the ending needs to be perfect.
It’s Never “Hasta la Vista” With the Terminator Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day, written and directed by the great James Cameron, is considered to be one of the greatest action films of all time. For the classic ending, after an intense battle against the indestructible T-1000, played by Robert Patrick, Sarah Connor finally puts an end to the machine, as well as the possibility of Skynet's future world-ending rise.

Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.
Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.

The recent additions to the National Film Registry contained some pleasant surprises for genre fans. The organization is part of the Library of Congress, selecting 25 movies each year for preservation based on cultural, historic or aesthetic significance. 2024's additions included a number of unexpected entries, many drawn from popular genres and long-standing series. Perhaps most notably, the Star Trek franchise received its first entry on the registry: 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
The film stands as an evergreen, and is routinely cited as one of the high points of the entire franchise. It's certainly one of the most important projects Star Trek undertook. The National Film Registry cites its strong technical merits, including Nicholas Meyers' direction and James Horner's score, as well as the moral implications raised by the climactic death of Mr. Spock. It also mentions Ricardo Montalban's celebrated performance, as well as Merritt Butrick...

For over 50 years, the late James Earl Jones' name in the credits of a film was reason enough to devote a couple of hours to a movie. Was it always a satisfying two hours? As someone who sat through "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold," "Three Fugitives," and "Soul Man," I can confidently say no.
This is more than fine. Jones was a working actor who took the "work" part seriously. As he told journalist Joe Leydon in 1989, "This is my profession. I do need to make a living at it, because I can't make a living any other way." So, when you're not getting offered, say, "The Great White Hope" every time out, you roll up your sleeves and do some time on the sets of "Blood Tide," "Best of the Best," and "Excessive Force" with no apologies. Those paychecks keep you afloat while you wait for...

There is no secret to making a classic movie. There's no tried-and-true formula or a can't-miss piece of source material that equates to a masterpiece provided you assemble the right director, writer(s), and actors. And as Francis Ford Coppola learned while making "The Godfather," there's no guarantee that, once you seemingly have all the right pieces in their right place, the studio will sit back and let you shoot your shot.
All-timers can also sneak up on you. Tom Hanks' beloved space drama Apollo 13 will arrive on Netflix this January, almost thirty years after its debut. Produced by Universal Pictures and Massive Entertainment, the film was commercially successful, grossing over $355 million against a $52 million budget.
Fans will get the chance to re-experience the glory of Apollo 13 when it hits Netflix on January 1. Directed by Ron Howard from William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert's screenplay, the 1995 docudrama film adapted astronaut Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger's 1994 book Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, dramatizing the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission. The movie follows Lovell and fellow astronauts Jack Swigert and Fred Haise aboard the ill-fated titular spacecraft for the United States' fifth crewed mission to the Moon. Hanks stars as Lovell opposite Kevin Bacon's Swigert and Bill Paxton's Haise. The ensemble cast includes Ed Harris, Kathleen Quinlan, and Gary Sinise.

Assuming you haven’t bought tickets to the symphony lately, your only exposure to classical music has been hearing it as the score playing in the background of movies. In that sense, musically, that stupid superhero movie you watched might just be the highest form of art you’ve experienced all year.
Those movies are going to be the absolute pinnacle of any composer’s career. Before that, they’ll be doing even sillier stuff, and that goes equally for the most famous composers of all.
6 John Williams Did the Original Theme Song to ‘Gilligan’s Island’
In the 20 years after 1976, four new movies broke the record for highest-grossing movie of all-time: Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Jurassic Park. All four of them were scored by John Williams. But a decade before the earliest of those four, Williams was enlisted to write the theme song to a TV show — a new series called Gilligan’s Island.

With an impressive career spanning over 40 years, Tom Hanks has revealed which of his movies brought him to tears while it was being made. Initially making his film debut in the low-budget slasher He Knows You're Alone, he has since gone on to become one of Hollywoods most recognizable and influential stars. Boasting a slew of award nominations, including winning two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor in 1993 (Philadelphia) and 1994 (Forrest Gump), Hanks has amassed over 100 film credits as an actor in addition to his work as a director, producer, and writer.
Appearing on the ReelBlend Podcast to promote his Forrest Gump reunion movie Here, which sees him reteam with Robin Wright and Robert Zemeckis, Hanks reflected on one of the strongest emotional reactions of his entire career. Despite the fact that he was not cast as Max after his audition, Hocus Pocus still has a connection to Leonardo DiCaprio's 1997 movie Titanic. Hocus Pocus is one of the major Disney classics when it comes to Halloween movies, its memorable story and amazing cast continuing to entertain audiences more than 30 years later. Though news on the potential Hocus Pocus 3 has been minimal, it would not be surprising if the Sanderson Sisters were not quite done with Salem yet, as the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, was a streaming hit.
Even though it did not get the same amount of praise upon release, the original Hocus Pocus has still stood the test of time. Its popularity continues to allow audiences old and new to rediscover Hocus Pocus' dark moments or hear the stories of its behind-the-scenes journey. There were great cinema composers before John Williams and there will be great composers after him. And yet, through his seven-decade career, he towers over everyone else. His music is not only iconic, but the movies we revere as classics wouldn’t have acquired such legendary status if not for his scores.
“Jaws” without John Williams isn’t “Jaws.” “Star Wars” without John Williams isn’t “Star Wars.” Although he only handles the music, the composer has left such a mark on cinema history that he makes a case as co-author of some of Hollywood’s biggest triumphs.
Director Laurent Bouzerau gives the full spotlight to the composer in the new documentary, “Music by John Williams.” Bouzerau is fully comfortable in his mode as celebrating Williams and his legacy, which is fine. I’m not sure I was looking for someone to “rip the lid off” the subject, and while...

It may come as a surprise to fans of the franchise, but the classic Star Treks theme has lyricssort of, thanks to its creator, Gene Roddenberry. These lyrics have been largely forgotten, and for good reason. Yet, in the story I Knew You Were Tribble When You Walked In, appearing in Star Trek #500, they make a darkly hilarious return.

A World of Timeless Musicians Since long before the days of film, there have been countless great composers throughout history; people who have a true ear for music and have been able to write and produce melodies that have gone on to be remembered for generations to come. Such individuals include Beethoven, Georges Bizet, Krzysztof Penderecki, Ennio Morricone, and John Williams. However, today I’d like to honor a composer that was taken from us far too soon, a man by the name of James Horner. Background James Horner was born on August 14, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. His father, Harry Horner had previously moved to the United States to work in theater as a set designer and art director. Meanwhile, his brother Christopher Horner, born two years later, would go on to write and film a few documentaries, including a 2004 feature titled ‘The Disappearing of Tuvalu: Trouble in Paradise.’ As for James Horner himself,...

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte,’ the latest installment in the franchise, aired for 8 episodes before being canceled. While the official reason for the cancellation hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely related to its record-low viewership and high production costs.
The show faced numerous hate-fueled attacks as well as valid criticism for its low quality and weak storyline.
Despite the controversy, ‘The Acolyte’ garnered a small but vocal audience on social media, who even started a petition to “resurrect” the show. However, the chances of this happening seem slim, as the company appears to be distancing itself from the series. Recently, all ‘The Acolyte’ merchandise was removed from the official store, today only a few T-shirts have been returned.
This situation echoes the ill-fated revival of ‘Willow.’ For context, ‘Willow’ was a live-action series meant to be a sequel to the 1988 film, intended to compete with ‘The Rings of Power,’ but it failed miserably.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is the most recent Star Wars installment that aired for 8 episodes. The show was recently canceled, and while the reason wasn’t confirmed we can speculate it had something to do with record-low viewership and high production costs.
The show was the target of many hate-fueled attacks but also a legitimate criticism due to its low quality and poor storyline.
Despite the controversy, the show did amass a small audience very vocal on social media, which eventually started a petition to “resurrect” the show. Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, Star Wars has never been more expansive. Before the sale, there was still a history between the two companies. Star Wars had a theme park history thanks to the popular Star Tours attraction at Disney parks, which contributed to the relationship between the two before the eventual deal that led to Galaxy's Edge. Disney parks also featured Indiana Jones attractions before owning the property.

The score for “Alien: Romulus” is coming to digital platforms, to be followed by a physical release in November.
Composed by Benjamin Wallfisch, the music for the Fede Álvarez film — which takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” and James Cameron’s 1986 “Aliens” — arrives digitally on August 16. Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated Wallfisch drew upon the well-known scores for those two films from Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner, as well as Marc Streitenfeld’s music for Scott’s 2012 prequel “Prometheus.”
The digital release includes 20 cues. The vinyl edition, to be released by Mutant on November 15, features alternate artwork and six bonus tracks. It’s available for pre-order Friday, August 16. Check out the cover art below:
After composing the scores for “Annabelle: Creation,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “Twisters” just this year, Wallfisch has established a pedigree for absorbing themes from famous films series and lovingly reimagining them for new chapters.

Joe Johnston’s 1991 superhero movie The Rocketeer begins in the usual way, with orange opening credits against a black screen. Only the slight tinkling of piano hints at something greater, little notes of inspiration under the art deco script on display. Sure enough, after the title reveal, the score pauses. The black screen is revealed to actually be the doors of a hangar bay, and the strings in James Horner’s score rise to a crescendo. They are announcing the hopes hanging on the yellow biplane that emerges.

Few military regiments are better known than the 54th Massachusetts, thanks to Ed Zwick’s brilliant 1989 film Glory. Based on the letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the books Lay This Laurel (1973) by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush (1965) by Peter Burchard, the screenwriter Kevin Jarre humanizes the black men who volunteered to fight for the union, most of whom died in battle.
When released, the movie was revelatory, catapulting Denzel Washington to the Hollywood A list with his Academy Award-winning performance as Private Silas Trip. His Shaw was courageous, bucking the hierarchy to get his men shoes and refusing his pay until the Army honored its promise of equal pay to the men. But we watched him...

James Cameron's Avatar movies borrow elements from Titanic, including a nod to the 1997 movie's hit song. Both Avatar and Titanic feature love stories that echo each other, with Horner's score adding emotional depth to both. Horner's musical composition creates thematic similarities between Cameron's blockbusters.
As surprising as it may sound, James Camerons Avatar movies borrowed a bizarre element from his earlier blockbuster Titanic. James Camerons movies differ wildly in terms of themes, tone, and subject, but there are a few recurring motifs that crop up throughout his filmography. The Terminator and Titanic may seem very different, but both movies ask viewers to interrogate whether the consequences of humanitys scientific innovations should have ethical boundaries. Similarly, despite their differences, Avatar: The Way of Waters ending and Titanics third act both feature lengthy, tense action sequences where the heroes attempt to escape a sinking vessel.
As such, it shouldnt be too...

The strength of the Ark franchise is evident, with the original game getting multiple expansions, and support for years, as well as a highly anticipated sequel starring Fast X star Vin Diesel, and of course the recently released Ark: The Animated Series.
It isn’t too much to say that a large part of the success comes down to the atmosphere created by the Ost of Gareth Coker, an ever-presence throughout all the projects of the franchise, and now in the midst of curating Ark 2’s soundtrack, to boot.
We were lucky enough to discuss this and so much more about himself and his career in the gaming industry over the years, from Prince of Persia to his ‘dream project’, and more!
[This was a written interview, so some answers have been edited for clarity and length.]
Gareth Coker’s an Ark Composing Genius, and So Much More Besides For those unaware, would you be so kind as to explain who you are and what you do?...

A sad day for the industry as Hollywood loses one of its most influential figures. Roger Corman, the King of B-Movies, has sadly passed away at the age of 98 on May 9th, 2024.
The following statement was issued by his family:
“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,.’“
Born in Detroit, Michigan, his career in film began at the 20th Century Fox mailroom, where he eventually became a story reader. Through his connections, he began producing and directing films such as The Fast and the Furious and Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet. Over the years, he worked with multiple industry veterans, such as Vincent Price and Boris Karloff.
His biggest period was when he launched New World Pictures with his brother Gene. Under the ownership of 20th Century Fox,...

Titanic is one of the greatest movies of all time for a reason. It's the blueprint for breathtaking romances, and it packs a seriously heartbreaking punch. Its the definition of a blockbuster, and has rightfully earned its praise in the years since its release. But aside from the story, or the infamous debate of whether or not Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) could fit on the door with Rose (Kate Winslet), one of the most defining pieces of the film is its stunning score. Titanic is a masterpiece all on its own, but add in the score by James Horner, and its taken to an entirely new level. After all, you cant hear My Heart Will Go On by Cline Dion without thinking of the movie. But that almost wasnt the case. In fact, director James Cameron originally didnt want a song at all.

"Houston, we have a problem." This is easily one of my all-time favorite space movies. Ron Howard's docu-drama thriller Apollo 13 first opened in theaters in the summer of 1995, celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. The old 35mm trailer scanner YouTube recently posted a crisp 2160p scan of the original Apollo 13 trailer. Though this actually plays more like a teaser, setting up the story and stakes and characters without showing too much (the full trailer is also available right below it). In this movie based on a true story, NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 (which launched in April 1970) to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy. Starring Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell, Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert, Bill Paxton Fred Haise, and Ed Harris on the ground as Flight Director Gene Kranz.

On the 40th anniversary of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, the film directed by Leonard Nimoy enjoys a much better reputation than it originally did. For a long time when discussing the films starring the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, fans claimed "the even-numbered movies are good, the odd-numbered ones are bad." Yet, how the first film Leonard Nimoy directed turned out is why Star Trek continues to be a relevant and important storytelling universe today. One reason Leonard Nimoy directed Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was, likely, public relations.

The Oscars are almost upon us, and according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Billie Eilish will claim her second trophy for Best Original Song. She and her brother Finneas previously won for penning the title song from “No Time to Die,” and now they’re expected to prevail again for their ballad “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie.” If they do, it would be the first time this century that a composition wins both Song of the Year at the Grammys and Best Original Song at the Oscars.
It’s less common than it used to be for soundtrack songs to cross over to the Grammys. The last time a song won both of these awards was actually Celine Dion‘s “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic.” Written by James Horner and Will Jennings, the classic love theme from the blockbuster film won Best Original...
