One of the first rules Neil Cross gave his team when making Iris, the new thriller series he created for Sky U.K., was that the lead character should never drive a car with a roof. “If Grace Kelly wouldn’t drive it, neither should Iris,” says Cross, laughing.
After spending years in the grime of East London making Luther, the dark cop drama starring Idris Elba as a homicide detective with some very nasty personal demons, Cross was ready for something light and sunny. With Iris, which “to create a different kind of show… something my wife and I could enjoy with a glass of wine on the sofa.”
Iris exchanges Luther‘s cold and cloudy London for a sun-drenched Italian countryside — the show was shot largely in Sardina — and takes inspiration from the British spy and adventure shows of Cross’ youth, think The Saint or The Persuaders!, for its chase thriller plot line.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree — especially at the Oscars.
I’m Still Here‘s Fernanda Torres and Conclave‘s Isabella Rossellini joined their mothers, Fernanda Montenegro and Ingrid Bergman, respectively, as Oscar nominees on Thursday, becoming the fifth and sixth pairs of mother-daughter duos to be nominated for acting Oscars.
Torres, who cracked the top five in the Best Actress odds after her Golden Globe victory, is up for the award alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). The nomination comes 26 years after Montenegro was shortlisted in the same category for Central Station and lost to Shakespeare in Love‘s Gwyneth Paltrow.
Rossellini, 72, received her long-awaited maiden Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress, where she was third in the odds, in Edward Berger‘s papal thriller. She faces Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked...

It’s clear Hollywood stylists worked through the holiday season, securing an abundance of high style in time for Jan. 5, from haute-couture gowns to bespoke suits and veritable piles of diamonds and status watches, all to ensure stars achieved maximum glamour at the 2025 Golden Globes.
Indeed, “glamour” was the word of the night, especially among actresses who embraced an old-Hollywood vibe, in looks that distinctly channeled 1950s or ’60s style, evoking the likes of Grace Kelly in High Society, Audrey Hepburn in Charade or Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair. From hair and makeup to jewelry, the addition of evening gloves and exquisite satin gowns — some indeed taking their cues from archival designs — the women’s style at this year’s Globes felt equal parts captivating and sophisticated. When Wicked director Jon M. Chu accepted his award for cinematic and box office achievement, he mentioned the work of everyone...

“The sun is sinking in the West / The cattle go down to the stream / The redwing settles in her nest / It’s time for a cowboy to dream.”
Those immortal lyrics from Paul Francis Webster kick off one of the loveliest scenes in movie history, from one of the greatest Westerns of all time: When Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sing “My Rifle, My Pony, and Me” in “Rio Bravo” — a glorious moment when the plot of the movie more or less comes to a halt and you just spend some time hanging out with these characters and the extraordinary talents inhabiting them. After all, cinematic artistry expresses itself through so very much more than just plot. And the pleasures of cinema so much more than just the sum of “what advances the story.”

Days of Our Lives fans have heard the name Catherina for about a year and a half. Konstantin used the “death” of his daughter to seek revenge on John Black, aka The Pawn, who allegedly killed her. He didn’t. Then, after Konstantin kicked the bucket, her name started popping up again when Cat Greene came on the scene. So it’s no surprise that Days has finally cast its Catherina, who’s alive and tangled up in Clyde’s web. Actress Susan Elena Matus debuted on the soap today.

Firecreek made it possible for audiences to see what it would have been like had High Noon been a James Stewart Western. Easily one of the most iconic Westerns of all time, High Noon is Gary Cooper's best-known work in Hollywood. Released in 1952, High Noon starred Cooper and Grace Kelly in a Western tale that wound up with a slew of Academy Award nominations and wins.
Directed by Fred Zinnemann, High Noon received praise for its unique take on the Western formula. In the movie, Cooper plays married town marshal Will Kane, who realizes that he's completely on his own against a gang of outlaws. Will's story sees him try to rally the townspeople to help, but his neighbors and friends aren't willing to take a stand. It's a darker look at the setting than many Western movies of the 1950s provided, but the arc it offered to its...

Although scarves may be accessories, they are essential and have their own category in most stores. Yes, they keep your neck and shoulders warm, but they also add dimensions to an outfit like no other accessory.
Many of the top movie moments are graced by scarves—they may even have revolved around them without us realizing it. There are probably hundreds of them out there, but here are our top five choices, from classics to contemporary.
5. Audrey Hepburn’s Stunning Red Scarf in Funny Face (1957)

From the dazzling period costumes in West Side Story and Harriet to the looks in the magical world of Wicked, Academy Award-nominated costume designer Paul Tazewell has shown that few artists weave as much versatility into their creative DNA. “I love period work and telling stories connected to history. What excited me about Wicked was designing a world rooted in period silhouettes while also creating a fantasy,” he says.
For the monumental task of transforming the beloved Broadway hit into two films, the designer says he drew upon a wealth of inspiration: “Wicked was about digging deep into where the original story came from. With the L. Frank Baum book, the 1939 film, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked and the Broadway musical, you’ve got four distinct expressions of the same story.” Maintaining the essence of the show while putting his own spin on it, Tazewell introduced a fresh perspective without entirely modernizing it.

Earl Holliman, the actor best known for playing Angie Dickinson’s boss on the 1970s NBC cop drama Police Woman, has died. He was 96.
Holliman died Monday in hospice care at his home in Studio City, his spouse, Craig Curtis, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Holliman won a best supporting actor Golden Globe for portraying Katharine Hepburn’s girl-crazy kid brother in The Rainmaker (1956) — he beat out Elvis Presley for the role — and then appeared in another Burt Lancaster film, as Wyatt Earp’s assistant in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957).
In the George Stevens epic Giant (1956), the Louisiana native played the son-in-law of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson’s characters, was the cook in Forbidden Planet (1956) and appeared as the brother of John Wayne, Dean Martin and Michael Anderson Jr. in Henry Hathaway’s The Sons of Katie Elder (1965).

Some big-name movie directors have tried their hand at music videos in between directing movies, including Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. Music videos offer directors a chance to try out some ideas in a shorter format. Rather than directing just one movie, a director could decide to shoot several music videos with different styles and different artists, just to keep things feeling fresh.
In some cases, Hollywood directors have helped create iconic music videos. The Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson and Madonna can all thank movie directors for some of their biggest hits, even if these directors have only tried out one or two music videos. For some directors, a music video can act as a warm-up for a movie, while others are just as involved in music videos as they are in movies.

Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly made just a handful of movies before transforming from a Hollywood princess into a real life one following her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Let’s take a look back in the photo gallery above of all 11 of her films, ranked worst to best.
Kelly got her start performing onstage and in television before being drafted by Hollywood to appear in Henry Hathaway‘s ripped-from-the-headlines nail-biter “Fourteen Hours” (1951) when she was just 22-years-old. The next year found her starring as the concerned wife to an imperiled town marshal (Gary Cooper) in Fred Zinnemann‘s landmark western “High Noon” (1952).
She got her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for John Ford‘s adventure yarn “Mogambo” (1953), playing one of two love interests (along with Ava Gardner) to big game hunter Clark Gable. The next year, Kelly upset frontrunner Judy Garland, who made a massive comeback...

Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. Should it occur, she would be the ninth youngest Best Actress Oscar winner and the first since over a decade ago.

Prior to joining the Royal Family, Meghan Markle worked in Hollywood as an actress, and briefly as one of those briefcase ladies on a game show.
She was still starring in a leading role in ‘Suits’ when she met and married Harry, prompting her to quit acting altogether. A bit like Grace Kelly in the beginning, but then the story turns.
Deciding that royal life is not for them, Harry and Meghan decided to move to California to build a different kind of life for their family. She and Harry may have lost their Hrh titles in doing so, but she gained something else, something she perhaps even cherishes more. The freedom to brand and style herself anyhow she wants.

The ‘doyenne of domesticity’ proves a blunt and at times frustratingly opaque yet always compelling subject in a new documentary
Who was the original influencer? Cases have been made for Paris Hilton, Anna Wintour, the British royal family, the first round of mommy bloggers, Andy Warhol, Grace Kelly, the Kardashians. But when it comes to leveraging the performance of one’s personal life to market an aesthetic, hinging business on pristine public brand, it’s tough to top Martha Stewart. As a new Netflix documentary directed by Rj Cutler argues, the “doyenne of domesticity” pioneered the art of selling a lifestyle – how to be an effortlessly chic hostess, a savvy cook, a glamorous gardener and a shrewd decorator, while still being a modern woman. Or, to put it in the parlance of the time during which she transformed her New York-centric catering business into a media empire: how to be...

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, Clint Eastwood will premiere his fortieth feature directorial effort, "Juror #2," at the American Film Institute Festival. This feels like a landmark number. It's certainly a landmark achievement, given that Eastwood is 94 years old, an age at which most people are interred. So it's frankly despicable that Warner Bros-Discovery, headed by noted enemy of cinema David Zaslav, has chosen to unceremoniously dump "Juror #2" on 50 screens over its opening weekend, with no plans for expansion or an awards campaign.
While it's possible the film is not, in the eyes of its studio, an awards contender, it has a commercially viable hook (as evidenced by its compelling trailer) and a killer cast headed up by Nicholas Hoult. Moreover, it's a film by Clint Eastwood, a man whose films have earned WB loads of money over the last 50-plus years. He's had an office on the lot for nearly as long,...

“My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock” is Mark Cousins’ latest cine-essay, and it’s legitimately a film that can make you see the Master of Suspense’s work in a new way. Working not chronologically but thematically, Cousins finds connections among films made decades apart around the ideas Escape, Desire, Loneliness, Time, Fulfillment, and Height.
This is no Wikipedia-like film documentary as all too many are made these days. This is genuinely a film about looking: About seeing things you didn’t see before in some of the most watched films ever made. It’s a sensory and cinematic experience, and I wrote, when it premiered at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival, that it’s “what film documentaries should be.” And it’s all the more unique for having it feel like Hitchcock himself is narrating this, with impressionist Alistair McGowan delivering a remarkable voiceover performance that makes you think the director,...

Western movies have long been built on repeated tropes that define the genre. As the exciting stories of how cowboys, bandits, and outlaws make their way through a lawless life across the Wild West frontier, many tropes and cliches have reappeared time and time again to the point that they become readily associated with the genre itself. These tropes helped create a cinematic language for Western movies and helped them stand apart from other types of genre films.
Many of the best Western movies ever made were packed with tropes and cliches of the genre. The acclaimed collaborations of icons like John Wayne and John Ford would not have been possible without the foundations of the Western genre and the tropes and clichs that it embodied. From over-the-top brawls in dusty saloons to lone gunmen facing off against ruthless crooks in a lawless town, these tropes helped define Westerns.

Kathryn Crosby, who starred in such films as Operation Mad Ball, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Anatomy of a Murder before she curtailed her acting career as the wife of Hollywood legend Bing Crosby, has died. She was 90.
Crosby died peacefully at her home in Hillsborough, California, surrounded by her family, according to a family spokesperson.

She also played the younger sister of Martha Hyer’s character in another film noir, the Blake Edwards-directed Mister Cory (1957), starring Tony Curtis, and portrayed a budding trapeze artist in The Big Circus (1959), starring Victor Mature.

Malika Andrews and Dave McMenamin have finally tied the knot. The ESPN supercouple were able to combine both of their backgrounds as the LA-based reporters wed at Cavallo Point Lodge. The national park resort is located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, California, right outside where Andrews was raised in Oakland. But even McMenamin’s Pennsylvania origin was intertwined in the location as Andrews told Vogue, “Some of the steel in the Golden Gate Bridge was sourced from Chester, Pa. — just outside of Philadelphia where Dave is from.” The celebration paid homage to the sport that brought them together. With a hoops-inspired seating chart divided in a March Madness-like bracket and a functional basketball hoop in the middle, the newlywed couple brought their vision to life. Andrews wore a stunning Grace Kelly-like dress with a modern lace twist. Her husband wore a blue suit with...

This past weekend, Grace Kelly was honored on TCM, with an entire day of "Summer Under the Stars" dedicated to her filmography. Moreover, Rear Window is enjoying a brief 70th-anniversary re-release in a select few American theaters. Considering all this, it seemed fitting to explore the Monegasque Princess' work on Almost There, revisiting the superlative year she had in 1954. After all, though she won Best Actress for The Country Girl, Kelly probably accrued a fair number of votes for two other cinematic triumphs, both by the Master of Suspense. Outland was Sean Connery's attempt at High Noon in outer space, but it failed to meet the high standard set by the classic Western film. Initially a box office failure, Outland has gained a cult classic status years later, known for its impressive visual effects. Despite mixed critical reception, Sean Connery's role as Marshal William T. O'Niel in Outland remains memorable to fans of the sci-fi thriller.

Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief is making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut in the UK this autumn – more details here.
Here’s a very welcome treat for collectors of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The 1955 Alfred Hitchcock thriller To Catch A Thief will be arriving on the format for the very first time this autumn, and in a rather spanking looking set.
The movie – which is liberally doused with romance – sees Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, a string of burglaries and a whole lot of fun. Because it’s Alfred Hitchcock and nearly 70 years old, To Catch A Thief is now filed as a posh slice of cinema, and perhaps it is. But just like something such as North By Northwest (which is due on 4K disc later this year too), this is a tremendous amount of fun, a blockbuster movie in vintage clothes.

In the history of American movies, and, arguably, of movies in general, there has never been a partnership between a husband and wife as consequential as that of director John Cassavetes and actress Gena Rowlands.
Not only did the two make several masterpieces together, among them Faces, A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night. They managed to create a whole body of deeply personal features — shot completely outside of the studio system and often inside their own family home in the Hollywood Hills — that would usher in the era of what we now call “independent film.”
Surely, there had been some memorable director-actress duos before them, mostly in Europe: Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina, Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina, Michelangelo Antonioni and Monica Vitti. But in those cases, which definitely yielded their share of masterpieces as well, the director was the auteur and the actress his muse.

Among the passengers was an actress by the name of Dolores Hart, and she was more anxious on the ground than she was in the air. Hart was the star of MGM’s forthcoming sex romp, Come Fly With Me, about three airline hostesses looking to score rich husbands. The film had wrapped in Vienna in August, and Hart was scheduled for a grueling cross-country promotional campaign. But that wasn’t what had her anxious. Just days before her 24th birthday, Hart was wrestling with the idea of ditching the film industry and—despite smooching Elvis Presley in Loving You, defending a...

For almost 45 years, Taschen has served as an invaluable resource for exploring entertainment history. Its books on everything from Stanley Kubrick to the James Bond franchise have delved into their subjects with unprecedented detail, becoming definitive sources of access and information. With the release of the two-volume “Life. Hollywood,” it pays tribute to one of the publications from which Taschen received much of its inspirations, if not its marching orders.
From 1936 to 1972, Life Magazine was one of the world’s most popular photography magazines. Commensurate with that was access to Hollywood and its stars, at a level of intimacy that feels almost unimaginable today. With stories that include shopping excursions with Grace Kelly, behind-the-scenes access on classic films like “The Ten Commandments” and “The Godfather,” the periodical was the first and best opportunity for American to peer behind the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown. Alfred Hitchcock has long been revered as one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. He also holds the unfortunate distinction of being one of Oscar’s biggest losers, with five Best Director nominations and no wins. Still, who needs an Oscar when you’ve impacted world cinema as significantly as “Hitch” has? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Known as “the Master of Suspense,” Hitchcock cut his teeth directing silent movies in his native England. With films like “The Lodger” (1927), he gained a reputation for helming tense and stylish psychological thrillers. With the invention of sound came an added element to Hitchcock’s work: a sly sense of humor.
He moved to America in 1940 to direct two films that earned Best Picture nominations: “Foreign Correspondent” and “Rebecca,” which took home the top prize. Hitchcock competed for directing “Rebecca,...

There’s a good chance you’ve seen her name emblazoned on screen in at least one of the hundreds of opening titles that bear her name. Considered one of film history’s great costume designers, Edith Head began working for Paramount Pictures in 1924. In 1982, her name was still appearing on screen with the posthumous release of the Steve Martin comedy Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, which was dedicated to her memory. She initially made waves in the late 1930s for her association with the sarong dress (designed for Dorothy Lamour) and made history in 1938 when she became the first female head of a major studio's costume department after designer Travis Banton’s departure from Paramount. The establishment of the Academy Award for Costume Design in 1949 helped further introduce costume designers to the general public and led to a record-breaking run of nominations and wins for Head.

A group of former students, faculty and community members is fighting the closure of the Los Angeles campus of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which revealed in April that it was closing its doors at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Leaders of the 140-year-old institution, which opened the L.A. campus in 2000 on part of the old Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea Avenue, blames the pandemic, a decrease in enrollment for smaller institutions and “national birthrate calculations” for the closure. Incoming students this fall will have the option to complete their first year in L.A. and transfer to the New York campus for their second year.
“Enrollments are down across the country and national birthrate calculations and other key data show that colleges, especially smaller institutions, must adapt to changing conditions,” according to a statement released in April by President Susan Zech and Board Chair Robert E. Wankel.

When putting together a list of the 25 Best Alfred Hitchcock Movies, it’s like plunging into a spectacular alternate universe of wit, verve, and style. The director of “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho” has a body of work so deep there are endless ways you can parse it: Maybe you could focus on his obsession with mothers, his approach to time, or the way food and painting pop up throughout his films.
But on a basic level, you also run into a challenge with Hitchcock you face with few other filmmakers, full-stop: The Master of Suspense is one of the rare directors to have a filmography with both the volume and the quality to credibly field a Top 25. With what other filmmakers can you do that? John Ford, certainly (Ford had the most films in our recent list of the 100 Greatest Westerns). Godard or Fassbinder perhaps? They...

‘General Hospital’ (Gh) spoilers confirm what everyone already knows. Maura West is a genius and slays as Ava Jerome. She makes us love Ava whether we like her or not.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Ava Has Become The Villian In Town
Ava has taken a villainous turn in the past few months and has become a bit wicked. She discovered that Sonny Corinthos’s (Maurice Benard) medication had been tampered with, but she chose to keep Sonny in the dark about it for some unexplained reason.
It looked like the show may explore the idea of a Sonny and Ava pairing, which would have been the equivalent of striking gold.
However, they went in another direction, making Ava the mischievous “baddie” on the soap. Her sudden pivot from the vivacious and fun bad girl you want to have a martini with to someone you’d like to avoid. But West is...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from Season 3 of “Bridgerton,” now streaming on Netflix.
Nothing’s wrong with being “Confident,” at least according to one Miss Cressida Cowper. Her stunning red revenge dress in episode 6 of “Bridgerton” season 3 comes with a side of lies: Cressida pretending to be Lady Whistledown.
While costume designer John Glaser says the red dress was dictated in the script, he felt the need to make the gown into an entrance dress, complete with a huge bow in the back.
“It’s translucent, so it’s not giant, heavy,” Glaser says. “It still has mystery to it. You’re not really sure where it stops, where it starts and you’re not really sure if it’s a red dress.”
Glaser attributes the color ambiguity to the layering in the dress: the under fabrics of the gown were hot pink, with the over fabric a deep burgundy,...

When makeup designer Miho Suzuki began working on Lessons in Chemistry, she decided the makeup needed to follow the story arc of Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson). “In the beginning, she couldn’t afford to put herself together with lots of makeup and hair and fancy clothes, because she was so focused on her studies and experiments,” she says. “I also wanted to contrast her with the other woman around her, so I didn’t do a lot of makeup.” Instead, the focus was on featuring the “beauty of the real skin”, including Larson’s freckles which Suzuki says she actually added more on to. “It made her look very fresh and kind of innocent in a way.”
When Zott was first invited to host the TV show, a makeup designer at the TV studio would be in charge of her makeup, which gave Suzuki the idea to go big in a fun way.

Mirren Gordon-Crozier has worked with Brie Larson on four projects in the past 10 years, beginning with the actress’ breakout role in the 2013 independent drama Short Term 12. Yet when the costume designer heard Larson’s next lead part was in a period TV series, “I almost fell to the ground,” she says.
What most excited Gordon-Crozier about coming on board was the span from 1949 to 1957 that’s covered in Lessons in Chemistry, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ novel of the same name in which Larson stars as Elizabeth Zott, a chemist turned cooking show star who’s navigating stifling gender norms amid love and loss. Gordon-Crozier talked with THR about the defining style of that period and the story Zott’s clothes tell in the series.
Were there real-life figures that inspired the series’ wardrobe direction?
Definitely, but it was their off-duty wardrobe rather than what we’ve seen on camera.
