From the dazzling period costumes in West Side Story and Harriet to the looks in the magical world of Wicked, Academy Award-nominated costume designer Paul Tazewell has shown that few artists weave as much versatility into their creative DNA. “I love period work and telling stories connected to history. What excited me about Wicked was designing a world rooted in period silhouettes while also creating a fantasy,” he says.

For the monumental task of transforming the beloved Broadway hit into two films, the designer says he drew upon a wealth of inspiration: “Wicked was about digging deep into where the original story came from. With the L. Frank Baum book, the 1939 film, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked and the Broadway musical, you’ve got four distinct expressions of the same story.” Maintaining the essence of the show while putting his own spin on it, Tazewell introduced a fresh perspective without entirely modernizing it.

Earl Holliman, the actor best known for playing Angie Dickinson’s boss on the 1970s NBC cop drama Police Woman, has died. He was 96.

Holliman died Monday in hospice care at his home in Studio City, his spouse, Craig Curtis, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Holliman won a best supporting actor Golden Globe for portraying Katharine Hepburn’s girl-crazy kid brother in The Rainmaker (1956) — he beat out Elvis Presley for the role — and then appeared in another Burt Lancaster film, as Wyatt Earp’s assistant in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957).

In the George Stevens epic Giant (1956), the Louisiana native played the son-in-law of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson’s characters, was the cook in Forbidden Planet (1956) and appeared as the brother of John Wayne, Dean Martin and Michael Anderson Jr. in Henry Hathaway’s The Sons of Katie Elder (1965).

Here’s a very welcome treat for collectors of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The 1955 Alfred Hitchcock thriller To Catch A Thief will be arriving on the format for the very first time this autumn, and in a rather spanking looking set.

The movie – which is liberally doused with romance – sees Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, a string of burglaries and a whole lot of fun. Because it’s Alfred Hitchcock and nearly 70 years old, To Catch A Thief is now filed as a posh slice of cinema, and perhaps it is. But just like something such as North By Northwest (which is due on 4K disc later this year too), this is a tremendous amount of fun, a blockbuster movie in vintage clothes.

In the history of American movies, and, arguably, of movies in general, there has never been a partnership between a husband and wife as consequential as that of director John Cassavetes and actress Gena Rowlands.

Not only did the two make several masterpieces together, among them Faces, A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night. They managed to create a whole body of deeply personal features — shot completely outside of the studio system and often inside their own family home in the Hollywood Hills — that would usher in the era of what we now call “independent film.”

Jay Kanter, agent to superstar Hollywood clients including Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 97.

His son, Adam Kanter of Independent Artist Group, remembered his father as someone who conducted his entire career with “integrity and kindness.”

Kanter also inspired Jack Lemmon’s character in Billy Wilder’s classic comedy “The Apartment.”

Jay Kanter served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and started out working at McA, with mentoring help from Lew Wasserman. At just 22 years old, he was sent to pick up Brando at the train station and they became friends, with Brando becoming his longtime client.

He went on to represent stars including Warren Beatty, Gene Kelly and Ronald Reagan.

A Chicago native who served in the Navy during World War II, Kanter got his start in showbiz at McA, where he was mentored by legendary mogul Lew Wasserman.

As an agent, one of Kanter’s first clients was a young Marlon Brando, whom he represented all the way through his iconic career and right up to his death in 2004. Kanter would go on to serve as an agent for several of the biggest names in Hollywood history, including Grace Kelly, Gene Kelly, Ronald Reagan and Marilyn Monroe.

In 1962, after Wasserman led McA to take over Universal Pictures, Kanter moved into film production and oversaw Universal’s European studio. After that studio shut down, Kanter formed a production company with famed producer Alan Ladd Jr....

Considered one of film history’s great costume designers, Edith Head began working for Paramount Pictures in 1924. In 1982, her name was still appearing on screen with the posthumous release of the Steve Martin comedy Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, which was dedicated to her memory. She initially made waves in the late 1930s for her association with the sarong dress (designed for Dorothy Lamour) and made history in 1938 when she became the first female head of a major studio's costume department after designer Travis Banton’s departure from Paramount. The establishment of the Academy Award for Costume Design in 1949 helped further introduce costume designers to the general public and led to a record-breaking run of nominations and wins for Head.

A group of former students, faculty and community members is fighting the closure of the Los Angeles campus of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which revealed in April that it was closing its doors at the end of the 2024-25 school year.

Leaders of the 140-year-old institution, which opened the L.A. campus in 2000 on part of the old Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea Avenue, blames the pandemic, a decrease in enrollment for smaller institutions and “national birthrate calculations” for the closure. Nothing’s wrong with being “Confident,” at least according to one Miss Cressida Cowper. Her stunning red revenge dress in episode 6 of “Bridgerton” season 3 comes with a side of lies: Cressida pretending to be Lady Whistledown.

While costume designer John Glaser says the red dress was dictated in the script, he felt the need to make the gown into an entrance dress, complete with a huge bow in the back.

“It’s translucent, so it’s not giant, heavy,” Glaser says. “It still has mystery to it. You’re not really sure where it stops, where it starts and you’re not really sure if it’s a red dress.”

When makeup designer Miho Suzuki began working on Lessons in Chemistry, she decided the makeup needed to follow the story arc of Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson). “In the beginning, she couldn’t afford to put herself together with lots of makeup and hair and fancy clothes, because she was so focused on her studies and experiments,” she says. “I also wanted to contrast her with the other woman around her, so I didn’t do a lot of makeup.” Instead, the focus was on featuring the “beauty of the real skin”, including Larson’s freckles which Suzuki says she actually added more on to. “It made her look very fresh and kind of innocent in a way.”

When Zott was first invited to host the TV show, a makeup designer at the TV studio would be in charge of her makeup, which gave Suzuki the idea to go big in a fun way.

Mirren Gordon-Crozier has worked with Brie Larson on four projects in the past 10 years, beginning with the actress’ breakout role in the 2013 independent drama Short Term 12. Yet when the costume designer heard Larson’s next lead part was in a period TV series, “I almost fell to the ground,” she says.

What most excited Gordon-Crozier about coming on board was the span from 1949 to 1957 that’s covered in Lessons in Chemistry, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ novel of the same name in which Larson stars as Elizabeth Zott, a chemist turned cooking show star who’s navigating stifling gender norms amid love and loss. Gordon-Crozier talked with THR about the defining style of that period and the story Zott’s clothes tell in the series.

Were there real-life figures that inspired the series’ wardrobe direction?

Definitely, but it was their off-duty wardrobe rather than what we’ve seen on camera.

Don't look now, but Hollywood is going back to its old-school roots with "The Fall Guy." Director David Leitch's throwback blockbuster (reviewed here by /Film's Jacob Hall) not only gives stunt people the overdue celebration that they heartily deserve, but it uses some very tried-and-true methods to do so. Relying almost entirely on the star power of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt along with the undeniable chemistry sizzling between the two leads, the rom-com masquerading as an action film might as well be shaking audiences by the collar to remind them why we go to the movies in the first place. Although based on a lesser-known television series, this adaptation doesn't resort to the same kinds of gimmicks as typical franchise films.

Former French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand, who was a high-profile and sometimes controversial figure on France’s cultural scene, died on Thursday at the age of 76, his family announced.

Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.

His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.

He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.

After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.

It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.
