Netflix's new smash hit with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score has become the streaming service's second most-watched movie in history. Since 2021, Netflix's most-watched movie of all time has been Red Notice, sitting at 230.9 million views. However, the star-studded action-comedy featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot could be unseated by Netflix's new smash hit very soon.
Some of Netflix's most-watched movies of all time also include Carry-On (2024), an action thriller starring Taron Egerton, and Don't Look Up (2021), Adam McKay's star-studded political satire featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, and many more. Another Ryan Reynolds vehicle, The Adam Project (2022), also ranks within the top five.
Sandra Bullock's post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box (2018) still holds a place in the top 10, alongside newer sensations like Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz's action-comedy Back in Action (2025) and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmai's star-studded apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind (2023), featuring Julia Roberts,...

In Clint Eastwood's 2011 Oscar-bait movie "J. Edgar," Judi Dench plays Annie, the mother of notorious FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. She didn't play a large part in the movie, but having Dench appear in your movie does lend the whole production an air of prestige. Dench's acting career goes all the way back to the late 1950s, when she started performing with the Old Vic Company in England. Her first professional gig was playing Ophelia in "Hamlet." Since then, she has racked up hundreds of credits and honed her craft to a fine point.
"J. Edgar" was something of a clunker. It received poor reviews and was only a modest hit. The high-profile cast included Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Dermot Mulroney, and Josh Lucas, and the film was written by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black, the author of Gus Van Sant's "Milk." It was...

Tom Hanks pays tribute to Jim Lovell, the real-life astronaut whose ill-fated moon mission was recounted in the 1995 movieApollo 13. Lovell passed away on August 7, 2025 at the age of 97.
Two-time winner Hanks missed out on a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Lovell, but Apollo 13 was nominated in nine other categories, including Best Picture (winning in a pair of technical categories).
The book Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Lovell himself, along with Jeffrey Kluger, served as the basis for Apollo 13’s script, with Ron Howard in the director’s chair. Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon starred alongside Hanks, playing the astronauts who accompanied Lovell on a famously disaster-ridden 1970 trip into space.

Sandra Bullock‘s Gravity had arguably one of the best cheeky nods to Apollo 13, the 1995 film starring Tom Hanks. Being a movie about space, the film starts right off with George Clooney’s character talking to Earth and stating, “Houston, I have a bad feeling about this mission”.
A voice from the intercom states, “Please expand”. In the movie, that voice belongs to the head of Mission Control in Houston, Texas. However, the voice over the intercom was actually Ed Harris’s. For those of you who may not know him, Ed Harris is an iconic actor who portrayed the role of White Team Flight Director Gene Kranz in the 1995 film Apollo 13.
Gene Kranz was responsible for safely bringing the three astronauts back, both in real life and in the Tom Hanks movie. The homage was a sweet gesture (and a genius on director Alfonso Cuarón‘s part...

“Houston, we have a problem”, five words that became a cultural landmark, stitched into the fabric of cinematic and historical lore. But here’s the rub: Jim Lovell never actually said them. The space icon, whose real-time heroism saved Apollo 13 from cataclysm, passed away on August 7 at the age of 97 in Lake Forest, Illinois, NASA confirmed. Lovell’s voice once danced between life and death above Earth’s atmosphere, yet it was Tom Hanks’ rephrased line in Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 that the world remembers.
The original line was “Ah, Houston, we’ve had a problem”. Well, screenwriter William Broyles Jr. admitted to tweaking the tense, swapping “we’ve had” for “we have” because, in his words, the original “wasn’t as dramatic” (per The Washington Post).
The reworked line gave audiences an active jolt of suspense. Broyles’ choice may have defied accuracy, but it was cinematic alchemy: the quote ranked No.

Tom Hanks is remembering the late Jim Lovell.
Following the news that commander of Apollo 13 mission, Lovell died on Thursday at 97, Hanks, took to Instagram on Friday evening to share a tribute. Hanks famously played the astronaut in the 1995 film of the same name.
“There are people who dare, who dream and who lead others to the places we would not go on our own. Jim Lovell, who for a long while had gone farther into space and for longer than any other person of our planet, was that kind of guy,” Hanks wrote on his post. “His many voyages around Earth and on to so-very-close to the moon were not made for riches or celebrity, but because such challenges as those are what fuels the course of being alive — and who better than Jim Lovell to make those voyages.”

Apollo 13 director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer paid tribute today to Jim Lovell, commander of the ill-fated moon mission on which they based their hit 1995 movie. The astronaut died Thursday at 97.
“Jim Lovell was a true American hero whose courage, intellect and grace under pressure inspired a nation,” Grazer said in a statement. “He was not only a legend in space exploration, but also an incredibly generous, kind and inspiring man. Thank you, Commander Lovell, for showing us the best of what we can be.”
Howard said: “Rest in peace, Commander Lovell. Navy test pilot, Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and, of course, Apollo 13. Simply knowing Jim has been a tremendous honor. Jim Lovell, the heroic NASA astronaut whose calm leadership during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission captivated the world and inspired generations of space exploration fans, has died. He was 97. Lovell passed away Thursday at his home in Illinois, his family and NASA confirmed in a joint statement.
“We are enormously proud of his amazing life and career accomplishments, highlighted by his legendary leadership in pioneering human space flight. Most importantly, he was our Hero. We will miss his unshakeable optimism, his sense of humor, and the way he made each of us feel we could do the impossible.”
Lovell’s story became the centerpiece of Ron Howard’s Apollo 13, the 1995 Oscar-winning blockbuster that starred Tom Hanks as the calm, competent commander of the near-tragic moon mission. Though the film dramatized some moments — most notably the famous “Houston, we have a problem” line — it stayed largely true to Lovell’s heroism and ingenuity.

Jim Lovell, the naval aviator and mechanical engineer who is most famous for commanding the space mission Apollo 13 safely back to Earth after mechanical issues led to an aborted moon landing in 1970, died Thursday in Lake Forrest Illinois. He was 97 years old.
NASA Administrator Sean Duffy shared the news of Lovell’s death on Friday in a special tribute.
“NASA sends its condolences to the family of Capt. Jim Lovell, whose life and work inspired millions of people across the decades,” Duffy wrote on NASA’s official website. “Jim’s character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount. We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements.”
Lovell also co-authored the 1994 nonfiction account of the Apollo 13 space launch, “Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13.” That book with Jeffrey Kluger served as...

There is no Toxic Avenger without Lloyd Kaufman — and that includes writer-director Macon Blair‘s new take on the cult classic.
In addition to serving as a producer on the superhero horror-comedy reboot, the Toxic Avenger creator makes a cameo in the film as The Hospital Grump.
“Macon gave Uncle Lloyd a wonderful cameo — much better than James Gunn does,” Kaufman jokes with Bloody Disgusting.
“My father used to say, ‘If you rub the back of a hunchback, you have good luck,'” he adds. “With James Gunn and some of the other people who’ve come out of Troma, I’m that hunchback. I haven’t told Macon about that, but he has to rub my hunchback.”
After Lloyd Kaufman gave him his start in the industry, James Gunn has repaid the Troma president with cameos in all of his films, from Slither and Guardians of the Galaxy to a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in Superman.

James Gunn has had quite the journey when it comes to his Hollywood career. From his early days as a writer working with Troma Entertainment to his mainstream screenwriting breakthrough with his two live-action "Scooby-Doo" films and "Dawn of the Dead," Gunn has showcased a love for colorful characters amidst the backdrop of niche genres. However, he would make his directorial debut with his horror comedy, "Slither" in 2006, followed by his sophomore outing, "Super" in 2010.
However, most audiences were introduced to James Gunn's sensibilities with "Guardians of the Galaxy" in 2014. Although Marvel Studios is often criticized for its movies following a distinct formula, Gunn stood out as one of the few filmmakers whose signature style remained prominent amidst the hit-making factory that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its prime. The fact that he turned D-list Marvel characters like the Guardians into A-listers within the general public cannot be stressed enough.

Grap your mop, everyone: the Toxic Avenger is back. In the mid-‘80s, the original The Toxic Avenger became the definition of a cult favourite – a scuzzy, super lo-fi blast from the team at Troma Entertainment, with a janitor transformed into a melty-fleshed crimefighter after a toxic waste incident. Produced for just $500,000, it became something of a VHS legend with its gnarly effects, and transgressive energy. Several decades later, ‘Toxie’ is back in an all-new take on The Toxic Avenger – with Blue Ruin and Green Room star Macon Blair as its writer-director, bringing fresh mayhem to the screen. This time, the Toxic Avenger is played by Peter Dinklage (with Luisa Guerreiro under all the makeup after the transformation), and there’s a stacked cast all round for this one. Check out the UK trailer exclusively here:

Peter Dinklage's Toxic Avengerhas officially resurrected the Moviefone telephone line more than a decade after it closed.
Per Bloody Disgusting, the long-lost Moviefone telephone line has officially returned. Rather than hearing the iconic "Hello, and welcome to Moviefone!" automated message, however, callers will instead be greeted by none other than Dinklage himself in the form of Toxie. Since the promotion between Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting began on Aug. 1, fans have been able call 1-802-377-film to hear Peter Dinklage in character as he reads show-times for the film, offers tips on purchasing tickets, and re-enacts scenes from the trailer for the upcoming The Toxic Avenger reboot.
Cineverse SVP of Marketing Lauren McCarthy said of the promotion, "We are thrilled to bring fans (writer-director) Macon Blair’s hilarious, punk-rock, heart-warming film alongside the imitable nostalgia of the Moviefone number. This toxi-rific pairing is just the latest installment in our...

Many Ryan Reynolds movies have found critical and commercial success. In fact, the star's movies have collectively made $7.99 billion at the box office so far. He also has 10 different titles on his resume that have been Certified Fresh by the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, including Mississippi Grind (91%), Buried (87%), Free Guy (80%), and Definitely, Maybe (71%).

Not everything Ryan Reynolds touches turns to gold. The Deadpool star has enjoyed plenty of success throughout the 2020s, creating a smash-hit video game movie in 2021's Free Guy, enrapturing the soccer world with his sports docuseries Welcome to Wrexham with Rob McElhenney, and, most recently, hopping the multiverse in the billion-dollar blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine with Hugh Jackman last year. However, back in 2013, he joined forces with Jeff Bridges to take on the forces of the damned in what would be one of the biggest flops of his career, complete with a 13% Rotten Tomatoes score — R.I.P.D. Curious Hulu subscribers will now be able to catch the supernatural actioner on the platform starting on August 1 as part of a batch of new films coming to streaming.

The Toxic Avenger’s journey from toxic waste to cult legend has been a wild one these last few decades, with Troma originally introducing the mutated superhero way back in 1984. That was just four years after a young Kevin Bacon got throat-stabbed in the original slasher classic Friday the 13th, and all these years later, Bacon is now joining The Toxic Avenger franchise!
Over 40 years after the original Troma cult classic, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen with its biggest movie to date, an unrated experience from director Macon Blair that’s being unleashed by Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting on August 29. You’ll only be able to see it up on the big screen, and Kevin Bacon wants to make sure you show the fuck up.

Entertainment studio Cineverse made a significant impact at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, presenting new material from two highly anticipated, non-rated theatrical releases: the reboot of The Toxic Avenger and a new installment in the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise.
The studio’s presence was highlighted by a Hall H panel for The Toxic Avenger, which featured an exclusive first-look clip from the forthcoming horror-comedy. The panel included a formidable lineup of talent associated with the project. Writer and director Macon Blair was present, alongside the iconic co-founder of Troma Entertainment, Lloyd Kaufman. They were joined by a distinguished cast, including Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige. A surprise video message from cast member Kevin Bacon, who was unable to attend, was also presented to the audience. In conjunction with the panel, it was announced that tickets for the film’s theatrical run are now available for purchase.

Most of us are pretty used to the idea that horror movies are a great way for up-and-coming actors to get a foothold in the film industry. That's primarily thanks to the horror boom of the 1980s, giving opportunities to numerous thespians who went on to become A-list actors; folks like Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Meg Ryan, and others. Yet the notion of horror giving a first chance to future stars is not relegated to the last 40-odd years. Sure, horror's reputability certainly wavered during the classic Hollywood years, meaning that studio horror films weren't as prolific as Westerns were, and thus many more young actors found themselves riding a horse more often than running around a spooky castle. Yet horror's always been popular, and during the 1950s, the studios began to get excited about a new gimmick which would briefly revitalize the genre: 3D.

When National Lampoon’s Animal House hit theaters in 1978, it didn’t just launch John Belushi into comedy legend, it detonated a seismic shift in college comedies that reverberates to this day. With its toga parties, deadpan rebellion, and chaotic charm, the film didn’t so much depict college life as it rewrote the mythos altogether. This enduring Animal House legacy reshaped the very idea of a college comedy.
Directed by John Landis and scripted by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, and Chris Miller, the story follows the misfit Delta Tau Chi fraternity at fictional Faber College as they wage war against the establishment. This specific college comedy narrative became instantly iconic. But beneath the slapstick and spectacle lies a surprisingly sharp cultural snapshot of late ’70s America, one that laughs through its teeth while flipping off authority.

In April 2025, Kevin Bacon's horror series, "The Bondsman" took over the Prime Video charts, signalling the arrival of what looked to be yet another popular series for the streamer. Just one month later, Prime Video canceled "The Bondsman" in a surprising turn of events that reminded us all of the fickle nature of the streaming sphere. For Bacon, however, this wasn't the first time he'd fronted an initially popular show with a grizzly streak that was cancelled before its time.

Plot: Loosely based on the 1984 cult classic, The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as a terminally ill janitor named Winston Gooze who transforms into a mutant vigilante after a toxic accident. He then must rise from outcast to become a hero, battling corporate greed and corruption to protect his community and step son. But does it live up to the cult status of the original?
Review: Let’s get this right off the bat. Director Macon Blair’s riotous remake of The Toxic Avenger might not win over the uninitiated, at first, but for those steeped in the radioactive grime of Tromaville, it’s a sludge-soaked triumph. A worthy spiritual successor to Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 cult classic, this new iteration is less reboot and more reanimation—one that gleefully rips off its own limbs and reattaches them with the kind of DIY gross-out ingenuity only a Troma fan could love.

The Toxic Avenger is a movie that many people believed would never see light of day. Despite being completed almost two years, the film has sat in limbo, throwing out small teasers, trailers and images to let everyone know it still exists. However, now, the movie is ready to unleash its insane, gory madness on the world in just over a month’s time. But what made director Macon Blair choose Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage for the lead role of this remake of the classic Troma Entertainment property? Simply, he likes him.
During a short interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Blair was asked his reasons for making Dinklage the star of his movie by The Hollywood Reporter, to which he replied:
“I just like working with people that I like, and [have] senses of humor, and if I have had a good time with them in the past, I like to keep it going.

To quote Roger Ebert, even if Clint Eastwood had never acted a day in his life, he'd still be a Hollywood legend. As a director, Eastwood is one of the industry's more prolific, having made 40 feature films since his debut, "Play Misty for Me" in 1971. His most recent film, "Juror #2," was released in 2024, meaning he was 93 when he completed work on it.
On screen, Eastwood's films tend to be mellow and slow-moving. He prefers a naturalistic aesthetic, paired with cloudy, ethereal photography. He works in all genres, from cop dramas to Westerns to romances to musicals (although few enjoyed his film adaptation of "Jersey Boys"). As an actor, Eastwood is best known for playing gun-toting badasses like The Man With No Name and Dirty Harry. As a director, his films tend to be mellower and more sensitive. In many cases, his films don't so much climax as gently crest. He...

The new version of The Toxic Avenger is finally coming to movie theaters, and it comes with a popcorn bucket that's perfect for the film. Of course, that also means that it's not very appetizing.
In a post shared online, the Cinemark theater chain unveiled their official Toxic Avenger popcorn bucket. Appropriately, it's in the form of a toxic waste barrel, a reference to the chemicals that cause the titular monster's transformation. Added details make the bucket look rusty with green ooze seeping out from the top. It comes with a lid with a hazard sign on top, and a look inside reveals that the interior appears smeared with green slime. It may be among the more unusual popcorn buckets seen in recent years, but Toxie would be proud.

Kenny Loggins, the king of the movie soundtracks, is the star of a new documentary titled “Conviction of the Heart.”
The 94-minute film, directed by Dori Berinstein (“Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love”), is named after Loggins’ 1991 song “Convictions of the Heart,” which former Vice President Al Gore dubbed the anthem of the environmental movement.
In the doc, Loggins explains the origins of several hit songs, including “Footloose” and “Danger Zone,” featured in “Top Gun.” The doc also chronicles the music legend’s childhood as a shy, gawky, and unpopular kid with low self-esteem growing up in California; Loggins’ key role in the folk-rock movement with Loggins & Messina, a pop-rock duo he formed with Jimmy Messina in the 1970s; and the singer’s rise to fame in the 1980s as a solo artist who went on to win multiple Grammys and achieved global recognition because of the songs he...

Peter Dinklage has said taking on the role of Winston Gooze in The Toxic Avenger was “the easiest thumbs up, probably ever”.The 56-year-old actor stars in the upcoming horror/comedy remake as the titular anti-hero ‘Toxie’, and Dinklage has now said that signing on to The Toxic Avenger was one of the easiest decisions he has ever made in his acting career because it was so different to his previous projects.Speaking on a panel for the movie at San Diego Comic-Con, he said: “I'd never done a movie like this before or a role like this, and the sensibility of the script and knowing what he was going to do with it was everything to me.”The Game of Thrones star added joining any film “is a leap of faith every time”. He explained: “You go make a movie somewhere far from your kids, on the other side of the globe.

One would expect the cast of “The Toxic Avenger” — a bloody, violent, unrated horror-comedy about janitor-turned-superhero Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) whose body is gruesomely deformed from toxic waste — to drop a few f-bombs during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday. And that did happen after Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, Jacob Tremblay, writer-director Macon Blair (“I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”) and producer Lloyd Kaufman took the stage inside Hall H. Before they even started talking, their co-star Kevin Bacon appeared in a video apologizing for not making it to San Diego, which he capped with a song pleading for people to see what he called a “hilarious, punk, fun, bloody ride” in the theater.
“Stayin’ at home going to make you blue / You need the movies and the movies need you,” Bacon sang. “Down to the theater, try your luck / ‘Toxic Avenger,’ show the fuck up.

Universal Pictures is celebrating the 30th anniversary of “Apollo 13” by rereleasing the groundbreaking space-drama in Imax. The full-length theatrical version of the Oscar-nominated film will return to theaters Sep. 19 and play exclusively in Imax through Sep. 25.
Directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer at Imagine Entertainment, “Apollo 13” recounts the true story of astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), who embarked on the eponymous space odyssey that became one of the tensest rescue missions in NASA history. The film released in 1995, captivating audiences with its powerful story and spectacular special effects.

The Ron Howard astronaut drama Apollo 13 is turning 30 this year, and, to celebrate, Universal & Imagine Entertainment are bringing the award-winning film back to theaters in IMAX format. The film, which stars Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris and Bill Paxton, was the first live-action film to be digitally remastered using IMAX‘s proprietary Dmr technology. It was, then, re-released in 2002 as Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience. At the time, 13 minutes of the film were cut to accommodate the limitations of the IMAX film platter used in projection. Now, from September 19 to September 25, Apollo 13‘s IMAX remaster will be shown in its full-length theatrical version for the first time ever.

It’s been a big year for movie anniversaries, and to celebrate 30 years of one of the best space movies ever made, Universal has announced that Apollo 13, directed by Ron Howard and starring an incredible cast including Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan, will be returning to theaters from September 19th to September 25th — for the first time ever, in IMAX.
Per the official description from Universal:
Released on June 30, 1995, Apollo 13 recounts the real-life events of April 1970, when an oxygen tank explosion aboard NASA’s third planned mission to the Moon transformed the flight into a harrowing battle for survival. With their spacecraft losing power and life support, astronauts Jim Lovell (Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Golden Globe Award winner Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (SAG Award winner Bill Paxton) were forced to abort their lunar landing and chart...

While failure is not an option, this fall, you'll have the option of watching Ron Howard's classic space thriller Apollo 13 on an IMAX screen. The 1995 film is coming to the big screen just in time for its 30th anniversary, and for the 55th anniversary of the harrowing space mission that inspired it. Apollo 13 will screen in selected IMAX theaters on September 19.
This is the second time Apollo 13 has come to IMAX theaters. In 2002, it became the first film ever to be remastered with IMAX Dmr technology; previously, most IMAX films had been shot specifically for IMAX projection. However, it had to be recut to play in IMAX theaters; the film, in its normal state, has a running time of 140 minutes, and at the time, IMAX film reels were so physically enormous that no film with a length over two hours could be shown with an IMAX projector.

Fans have been waiting a long time to see writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), which wrapped filming way back in 2021 and unveiled a teaser trailer near the end of 2023, around the time it had its world premiere screening – but we won’t have to wait much longer. At the start of the year, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film a wide release, and we’ve since learned that they’re aiming for an August 29th theatrical release. And if the movie leaves fans wanting more, they’re in luck, as Legendary Comics has announced that they will be releasing an “official tox-spansion” of the film in graphic novel form! Copies of an expanded edition of the graphic novel will be available through a Kickstarter campaign that hasn’t yet been launched.
