Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot has found its villain, with Dave Bautista in final talks to play the immortal barbarian known as The Kurgan, who was memorably brought to life by Clancy Brown in the '80s movie.
The Kurgan, or Victor Kruger as he goes by in modern times, is one of the world's oldest immortals, emerging as the nemesis of Connor MacLeod (Henry Cavill) after "killing" him on the battlefield in 1536. Bautista was actually circling this role back in 2015, for an earlier take on the property that was set to be helmed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.
Russell Crowe is also on board as MacLeod's mentor and fellow immortal warrior, Ramirez, who was played by Sean Connery in the 1986 original. Industry actress Marisa Abela will play the female lead.

Two weeks before the Edinburgh International Film Festival kicks off its 78th edition, Festival Director and CEO Paul Ridd seemed almost at ease.
“We’re not in the eye of the storm,” he said, “but we’re sort of circling it.”
Since taking the helm in late 2023, alongside festival producer Emma Boa, Ridd has overseen a strategic reinvention of one of the world’s oldest film festivals from building a new board and footprint to rethinking its mission within Scotland’s festival-heavy cultural calendar.
“This year is really year one,” he told Variety. “Last year we laid the groundwork, we showed that the new structure could work. Now, it’s about growing on that ballast.”
That growth is visible across the board. EIFF25 presents 43 new feature films, 18 of them world premieres, including the 10-title Sean Connery Competition for Feature Filmmaking Excellence — carrying substantial £50,000 prize awarded by audience vote. Alongside that are six retrospective screenings,...

The Highlander reboot appears to have its villain, as word gets out that Dave Bautista could play Kurgan in Chad Stahelski’s new film.
Almost 30 years on from the 1986 original, Highlander is getting a remake courtesy of John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Filming is said to be getting underway this autumn, and it sounds as though the production has slotted in a major piece in its casting puzzle: Dave Bautista is said to be in talks to star as the villain according to Deadline.
Assuming the meetings and form signing all go off without a hitch, this means Bautista will play The Kurgan – the towering, bloodthirsty villain played with wild-eyed relish by Clancy Brown in the first film. He’ll do battle over the centuries with Henry Cavill’s fellow immortal, Connor MacCleod (previously played by Christopher Lambert), while Russell Crowe will replace Sean Connery as the flamboyant mentor, Ramirez.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Highlander reboot has found its villain in the hulking form of Dave Bautista!
40 years after its release, Highlander remains a wonderful cult favorite movie. It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a 15th-century Scotsman who’s killed in battle only to become part of a race of Immortals among humanity. They can recover from almost any wound with the ability to die only to return to life with their wounds healed. The one death they can’t return from is decapitation.
These Immortals play “the Game,” a duel where the winner beheads his enemy. That unleashes the "Quickening," a massive energy surge that transfers the loser’s power to the winner. The ultimate goal is the “Prize,” supposedly the power of every Immortal who ever lived. That leads to the franchise’s tag line, “There can be only one.

Bautista will take on the role of the Kurgan, another immortal who has been hunting down Highlanders for centuries. This new cast is shaping up to be just as exciting as the original 1986 film, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown.
The casting news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, and it’s just one part of a reboot that’s been in the works for years. Back in 2008, Summit Entertainment bought the rights to remake the original movie, with plans for a film titled Highlander: The Reckoning. Over the years, several directors and writers have been attached, including Justin Lin, Melissa Rosenberg, and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but the project faced many changes and delays.

Dave Bautista is bringing the 1980s back, one action franchise at a time. He's now set to star in two major revivals of '80s VHS action classics from Amazon MGM Studios. He's said to be close to signing on for Road House 2, the sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the Patrick Swayze brawler, and will also star in Chad Stahelski's revival of the immortal Highlanderfranchise. Bautista is said to be playing the role of the villainous Kurgan in the latter.
According to reports, Bautista is circling both roles, and is expected to sign both, but has not yet officially put pen to paper. In Road House 2, he'll be joining Gyllenhaal, who starred as UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton in the Doug Liman-directed remake in 2024. Guy Ritchie was originally set to helm the sequel, but dropped out last month; Ilya Naishuller has stepped in to steer the film.

The idea that Taron Egerton doesn’t see himself as James Bond is, frankly, baffling. The actor has every tool in the shed: charm, grit, screen presence, dramatic range, and yet he insists he wouldn’t be a “good choice for it”. That’s not humility; it’s probably hesitation dressed in modesty. With Denis Villeneuve officially announced to direct the next installment of the franchise and Amazon eager to revamp 007 for a new era, casting someone like Egerton isn’t just a safe bet; it’s the smart one.
Yes, Egerton has shrugged off the rumors, saying (via Collider):
I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.

Amazon can already hear the strains of John Barry’s iconic theme paired with that gun barrel shot — the one to which Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig have all leant their figures. CEO Andy Jassey said on a July 31 call (which highlighted his company’s better-than-expected Q3 earning) that “James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers,” and adding, “We cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”
Jassey is referring to none other than Denis Villeneuve, who was announced in June as the next director to take on the franchise — which already has 25 official releases in its canon. Villeneuve will have the unique position of being the first steward to not be collaborating with the Broccoli family, which has overseen every Bond movie since “Dr. No” in 1962.

James Bond is one of the most recognizable characters of all time, and many great actors have left their mark after playing him. Following Daniel Craig's run as Bond in several films, everyone is looking forward to finding out who the next star is.
Many British actors have been fancasted in the role, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Taron Egerton, and more. Among the casting rumors is Spider-Man's Tom Holland, who has experience in the action genre beyond his role as the superhero character. In a new interview on Gordon Ramsey's Scrambled, Holland finally addressed the rumors.
The interview, meant to promote Holland's alcohol-free beer brand Bero, has the actor join famous chef Gordon Ramsey on a cooking experience, which led to many interesting topics. One of them was James Bond. Around the 9:40 mark, the famous chef asked Holland whether he ever considered playing a character...

After years of swords clashing in development limbo, the Highlander reboot is finally gearing up to swing into production—and Henry Cavill just confirmed he’s sharpening his blade. The former Man of Steel star told The Hollywood Reporter that his “big summer plans” are entirely focused on Highlander, the long-gestating fantasy action reboot being helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Cavill is set to lead the Amazon Studios epic as the immortal warrior at the heart of the franchise—and he couldn’t be more thrilled.
“Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.”
Fans had already speculated that Cavill’s newly rugged, long-haired look might be for the role—and now it’s official.

If there’s any truth to rumors that Tom Holland is in the running to play James Bond, he’s keeping it top-secret for now.
As the BAFTA winner returns to one major franchise with Friday’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day teaser, he recently commented on “speculation” that he’s up for the coveted part in the Denis Villeneuve-helmed update of the franchise.
“Listen, there’s speculation at the minute. We’ll keep it to a minimum for now,” he said in a video on Gordon Ramsay’s YouTube. “We’ll get there one day.”
Holland added, “Every young British actor, it’s the pinnacle of working in our industry. I already consider myself to be the luckiest kid alive. I could never have dreamed to have the career that I’ve had.”

We recently got word that Denis Villeneuve had officially signed on to direct the next James Bond movie, and the project has now enlisted a screenwriter.
Amazon MGM Studios has announced that Steven Knight will pen the script for 007's next adventure.
“It’s fantastic to be invited to do it,” Knight told the BBC shortly after his involvement was made public. “I can’t wait to get started.”
“I’m hoping that being a Bond fan for so many years, that will sort of be imbued into me and I’ll be able to produce something that’s the same but different and better and stronger and bolder,” he added.
Knight was also asked if he knows who will be stepping in to replace Daniel Craig as the iconic secret agent, and responded: “Very, very good question and one I can’t give you the answer to."
We're not sure if Villeneuve and co.

In its original iteration, the Zucker brothers’ Naked Gun wasn’t just carried by Leslie Nielsen’s performance––nearly every aspect of the first two David Zucker-directed films was a reflection of it. As buffoonish detective lieutenant Frank Drebin, Nielsen’s scenery-chewing baritone encapsulated the square-jawed, hypermasculine self-seriousness of a generation of patriotic popular entertainment unleashed on America during the Reagan years, themselves often self-conscious mimics of the leading men and man-of-action morality plays of the midcentury Hollywood pulp on which Nielsen cut his teeth. Drebin’s guileless stupidity as he bumbles through formula-perfect cop thriller plots playing the maverick hero, and Nielsen’s readiness to bug his eyes out or call a man “Mr. Poopy Pants” in the middle of an otherwise dead-serious delivery, gleefully deflated the macho put-on, luxuriating in pushing the already juvenile nature of the popular fantasies just a few key steps over the edge from self-parody to parody.

Some movies fade with time. Others grow more powerful. And then there’s Brian De Palma’s 1987 classic The Untouchables — a crime drama that still feels bold, beautiful, and unshakably powerful nearly four decades later.
Why We’re Talking About The Untouchables (1987)
Even decades after its release, The Untouchables refuses to disappear from pop culture. It resurfaces through 4K restorations, anniversary screenings, and directors who continue to cite it as a major influence.
For many, this is a first‑time discovery. For longtime fans, it’s a film worth revisiting. If you’ve never seen The Untouchables (1987) — or it’s been years — now is the perfect time to experience why it remains one of the greatest crime dramas ever made.

The next James Bond film has found its writer. Variety reports that Steven Knight, the man behind Peaky Blinders, will pen the script for the upcoming 007 adventure. The movie will be directed by Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman for Amazon MGM Studios.
Knight is best known for creating the hit Birmingham gangster drama, but he’s also written films like Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, and Locke. His latest produced screenplay was Maria, the biopic about opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Pablo Larraín.
This will be the first Bond movie made under Amazon MGM’s full creative control after the company struck a deal with long-time Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the film isn’t expected until 2028.
The big question still hanging over the project is who will play 007.

It was Alfred Hitchcock's last movie, and this is your last chance to stream it on Netflix. Family Plot, Hitchcock's final stint in the director's chair, is leaving Netflix at the end of July. The suspense thriller with a pseudo-supernatural twist stars Bruce Dern and Karen Black. An adaptation of Victor Canning's 1972 novel The Rainbird Pattern, Family Plot reunited Hitchcock with screenwriter Ernest Lehman, who had previously penned North by Northwest for the director. The two clashed over the screenplay: Lehman wanted a darker film, while Hitchcock preferred it to be more comedic.
It was also the only time that Hitchcock worked with another Hollywood legend: John Williams composed the score for the film. Hitchcock encouraged the composer to take a light touch with the score, telling him, "Mr. Williams, murder can be fun." While the film is not considered to be one of Hitchcock's masterpieces, critical...

The Highlander reboot has gotten an official update from star Henry Cavill. Highlander was originally a 1986 epic fantasy film about an immortal Scottish swordsman who must fight the last of his immortal enemies, directed by Russell Mulcahy and featuring Christopher Lambert in the lead role, alongside Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart.
A Highlander reboot has been talked about for over a decade, but it was not until a while later that the plans for this project further materialized. Said reboot would sub out Lambert for Cavill, and put John Wick's Chad Stahelski in the director's seat. Russell Crowe and Marisa Abela will also appear in the film.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill spoke about his role in Highlander. Cavill said that the film is "taking all of [his] focus" and "it's a project that [he's] extremely excited about." He also singled out and praised the director.

The search for a new James Bond is still ongoing, but one potential actor is withdrawing from the race. Taron Egerton has been mentioned as a possible contender for the role of James Bond for years, but he’s not keen on playing the iconic character.
“No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it,” Egerton told Collider. “I think I’m too messy for that. I think I’m not— I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. You could play it at that younger age, but I don’t know that I’d believe it that much.”

That’s right, that’s three decades of strategizing while others scramble to stay relevant.
Her game plan is simple yet effective. Get out before they kick you out. Smart, right? She watched her famous parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, struggle with Hollywood’s brutal ageism. Curtis thus has been “self-retiring” bit by bit, making sure she leaves on her own terms. She explained,

As the list of James Bond contenders grows, Taron Egerton sets the record straight and takes himself out of the running. That's not to say he's not interested - it's just that the role is a long-term commitment, and that's "quite an undertaking" for him.

Harrison Ford has always had issues with "Blade Runner," and time hasn't made him any fonder of the film. But it should have, because despite it being a box office flop upon its 1982 release, it has since become accepted as one of the most important and influential sci-fi movies ever made. Of course, Ford has never let popularity convince him of anything (he never really cared about "Star Wars" despite its overwhelming success), but you'd think he'd be glad that his movie is thought of so highly — especially since he was just one of many stars who could have fronted the film.
Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the "Blade Runner" script with David Peoples, certainly had a different vision in mind when he first set about bringing the movie to life. He'd actually performed on-screen during the 1960s while under contract with Warner Bros. but had left acting behind in the...

Taron Egerton might have the looks, the charm, and the Kingsman credentials, but don’t expect him to don a tuxedo and order a martini anytime soon. While chatting with Collider's Joe Schmidt to promote his new film She Rides Shotgun, Egerton was asked directly whether he’d throw his hat in the ring to be the next James Bond — and he didn’t hesitate to say no. Schmidt pointed out that Egerton had been focused on smaller, indie fare for some time, but that he had come from a world of franchises, and wondered if that meant he'd want to take a turn as 007. Steven Seagal‘s rise to fame is one of the more interesting stories in Hollywood. Warner Bros – circa 1986 — a bunch of powerful, suit-wearing studio execs are summoned to a studio lunch like no other. They’re set to observe an Aikido demonstration by a superstar trainer named Steven Seagal, previously known as the fight choreographer who broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for Never Say Never Again. By the end of the demonstration, mangled stunt men lie on the floor while a blood-stained Steven Seagal walks away with a movie deal.
Seagal made his feature starring debut in 1988’s Above the Law. His look was different from a Stallone or Schwarzenegger, and with his fighting style being fresh and unique, Above the Law captured the attention of audiences. There’s something irresistible about a man in a tuxedo who can dismantle a bomb, crash a motorcycle onto a moving train without wrinkling his collar, and win at poker, don’t you agree? Sound familiar? Well, it’s none other than James Bond, not a secret agent who’s a pop culture institution with a license to kill and a knack for world-saving in style.
While some of his movies feel like high-octane dreams, others honestly feel like they were made during a hangover with zero plot and way too many gadgets. In other words, they’re bleh.
Over the decades, we’ve seen Bond escape sharks, seduce spies, spacewalk with lasers, and even surf a CGI tidal wave. And now, with 27 films spanning multiple villains, eras, and wildly inconsistent theme songs, it’s only fair to sort the golden guns from the golden flops.

It’s funny how some of the most important and beloved movies of all time can come from stories that aren’t quite as celebrated or well read, and I’m not just talking about movies from 1982. The Thing certainly falls under that category because while Who Goes There is certifiably a great sci-fi story and there have been at least 3 movies based on it, The Thing and John Carpenter will live on far longer than Who Goes There and John W. Campbell. While that certainly doesn’t extend to all famous authors, Stephen King’s name is etched into history and 75% of his adaptations will either be forgotten or redone multiple times over, there’s also that middle ground. Phillip K. Dick has more than his fair share of adaptations out there, but his adaptations typically turn out higher profile than the author or his original works. Blade Runner...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to change in a big, bold way. Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the MCU, just confirmed what fans have been somewhat dreading for years. During a press conference via Variety, the Marvel boss mentioned that new actors will be cast to play Tony Stark and Steve Rogers after Avengers: Secret Wars.
That’s right, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans’ era as the Og Iron Man and Captain America is coming to an end. But turns out, Kevin Feige isn’t hitting the reboot button, unlike James Gunn’s DC Studios. Because according to the Marvel head, Secret Wars will close the current chapter and start a new one, where new faces, new heroes, and the long-awaited arrival of the X-Men will happen.

Steven Spielberg's 1981 adventure film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was a retro film by design. Set in 1936, "Raiders" is about a brave male adventurer, Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones (Harrison Ford), who seeks to retrieve the legendary Ark of the Covenant (described in the Bible) before the then-active Nazis can seize it as their own. Spielberg was making a slicker, modern version of the 1930s adventure serials he remembered seeing in theaters as a boy, and "Raiders" includes car chases, fistfights, lairs of snakes, mystical spelunking, and a climax where a Nazi army is evaporated by the wrath of God. It's a good flick. Everyone remembers it. There was even a "Young Indiana Jones" prequel TV series and four theatrical sequels, the last of which, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," was released in 2023.
However, "Raiders" also spawned a mini-trend in cinema that is less well-remembered. Indiana Jones knockoffs...

Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.
In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime-fighting partner, Amelia Donaghy.

Two original Avengers are set to be recast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. The Multiverse Saga is nearing its end, as Phase 6 will launch this summer with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which introduces Marvel's First Family to the Avengers-centric franchise.
However, as Phase 6 will conclude The Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, there has been a lot of speculation about the state of the MCU after 2027. While some of the original Avengers are still around, it appears that Marvel Studios is looking to reboot some of the previous members down the line.
During Feige's roundtable press event with several outlets, including Variety, the Marvel Studios president "indicated" that big MCU players will eventually get recast, and that goes for some of the most iconic heroes of the franchise: Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, played by Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
