After making its UK debut on Prime Video on Friday, July 25, Harry and Jack Williams' latest crime thriller, the aptly titled The Assassin, has received plenty of widespread praise. Although not without its faults, it seems that the general consensus is that the Williams' have done it again following the huge success of The Tourist, which finished its long-awaited second season in early 2024, with many calling The Assassin its spiritual successor.
The Assassin stars The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, a former child star famed for his roles in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, alongside the ever-brilliant Keeley Hawes of Bodyguard fame. Currently, following its release just days ago, The Assassin has earned an impressive 86% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, albeit from just seven reviews thus far. Despite only releasing less than a year ago, Nick Frost's folk horror/comedy Get Away has already fallen under many people's radars. Now, 10 months on from its festival debut at Fantastic Fest, Get Away is finally a streaming hit in America.
Officially, as of July 21, 2025, Get Away is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Hulu in the US. Becoming a part of the MCU gives actors a great shot at finding cinematic immortality, even if you've reportedly not been invited to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. So big is the franchise fanbase that donning the costume of one of the iconic Marvel superheroes can lead to many of your future projects gaining instant access to millions more viewers. For Elizabeth Olsen, best known for her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU, this is seemingly the case, with her latest project, the dystopian sci-fi thriller The Assessment, becoming a huge streaming hit in America.

Freddie Highmore has called London home his whole life, but you wouldn’t know it from his portfolio.
The 33-year-old actor, a former child star thanks to his titular role in Tim Burton‘s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has spent a good chunk of the last decade across the Atlantic. Shooting entirely in Vancouver, his rise to fame is best associated with the medical drama The Good Doctor from 2017 to 2024 or the psychological horror series Bates Motel in the years before that.
“I had such an incredible experience that feels so unique and will probably never happen again,” Highmore tells The Hollywood Reporter about his TV adventures abroad. “But at the same time, there was definitely an excitement to do something back in the U.K.”
He adds: “It did always feel like, ‘Oh, I should get back at some point.'”

"You got any idea who might want us dead?" Prime Video in the UK has revealed the first trailer for The Assassin, a streaming series about a female assassin trying to live her life calmly in Greece. There's still no US release yet, but it'll be on Pv in the UK (and Ireland) at the end of this month. Created by Harry & Jack Williams, the six-episode series follows a retired assassin named Julie who, while living a secluded life on a remote Greek island, has a thorny reunion with her estranged son Edward. "Armed with questions around new information on his paternity, Edward battles to find the right time to speak to his frustratingly distant mother. But, when the moment finally presents itself, things take a deadly turn as Julie's dangerous past catches up with her and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run together.

The works of the Williams Brothers — Harry and Jack — have been keeping water coolers busy for over a decade now. From The Missing to Baptiste, The Widow to Liar, and The Tourist to Boat Story, the British screenwriting siblings have demonstrated a real knack for delivering propulsive, must-see-and-talk-about thrillers. And their latest offering, six-part Prime Video series The Assassin, looks set to continue the trend in some style. Here, Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore star as Julie and Edward, a mother and her estranged son enjoying an uneasy reunion on a scenic Greek island. So far, so straightforward. The wrinkle, then? She's a retired assassin, he doesn't quite know that yet, and Julie's past associates clearly didn't get the memo that she's hung up her Glock. And if that brief set-up has you intrigued, then check out our exclusive trailer for the show below;

Since rising through Hollywood's ranks as a child star in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, Freddie Highmore has broken the curse that often surrounds successful child stars and broken into a triumphant acting career as an adult. Still only 33 years of age, although he still looks much younger, Highmore has dazzled and delighted in the likes of Bates Motel as the iconic Norman Bates, Spanish heist thriller The Vault, and most notably as Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor, which officially ended last year.

Travolta and a team of misfits are forced to raid a tawdry gambling den, but the stakes are disappointingly low in this ineptly made work
Here is a cheap-ass knockoff of Ocean’s Eleven starring John Travolta that makes the Soderbergh film look like something by Andrei Tarkovsky or Ingmar Bergman. High Rollers is a heart-slowing work of staggering stupidity and charmlessness, ineptly made and quite frankly dull except when its flaws become so egregious you can’t help but guffaw.

The gang is first met at the beach wedding of two of the group’s younger members, tech whiz Link and dim hunk Caras (Swen Temmel). Alas, the nuptials are interrupted when international criminal Salazar (Danny Pardo) and his henchmen swoop in and kidnap Mason’s wife Amelia. Salazar demands that Mason and his crew,...

A beautiful drifter tries to make it in the strip clubs of Las Vegas in this absurd film – now a cult favourite thanks to its maniacal acting and directing
Martin Scorsese’s Casino wasn’t the only Las Vegas movie of 1995, there was also Showgirls – now on rerelease for its 30th anniversary – whose pure bizarreness has over three decades achieved its own identity, like Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent in Mary Poppins. It is the softcore erotic drama from screenwriter Joe Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven that has made a slow ascent from critical flop to kitsch cult favourite and now to a supposed tongue-out-of-cheek classic melodrama. Maybe it’s the last great mainstream exploitation picture, a film which owns and flaunts its crassness; a bi-curious catfight version of All About Eve or Pretty Woman.

What did she do with that chicken drumstick? Did she really play the jaw harp for the Scissor Sisters? As her new movie High Rollers is released, the actor is ready to answer all
Gina Gershon has been on our screens for nearly 40 years, during which she has starred in scene-stealing roles opposite some of Hollywood’s biggest actors. In her more likable moments, she orders an orgasm from cocktail-maker Tom Cruise in Cocktail (“How many would you like?” “Multiple” – fnar fnar) and takes a bullet for Nicolas Cage in Face/Off. In her less likable (but equally scene-stealing) moments, she receives a lapdance from – and gets pushed down the stairs by – Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls, chops Val Kilmer into small pieces in Breathless, gets murdered under the supposed watch of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi in Red Heat, and is forced by Matthew McConaughey to simulate oral sex on a chicken drumstick in Killer Joe.

With Thanksgiving months away, Nell Verlaque is getting ready for a second serving of Eli Roth‘s seasonal slasher.
At last Wednesday’s premiere of Prime Video‘s Overcompensating, the actress told Deadline that she’s “really excited” to get into production on the sequel to 2023’s Thanksgiving, which she hopes to film after completing production on her upcoming MGM+ series American Classic.

“Thanksgiving” star Nell Verlaque can’t wait to shoot the sequel to the surprise box office hit.
Her character Jessica is one of the few who survived director and co-writer Eli Roth’s first Turkey-time holiday slasher.
Verlaque tells me she’s read parts of the follow-up script and Roth has shared some more ideas with her.
“I would like to get covered in blood,” she told me at the premiere of Benito Skinner’s new Prime Video comedy series, “Overcompensating.”
That’s the least gruesome of her ideas. “I told him I really wanted to be tortured,” Verlaque said. “Like fully pained [and] tortured.”
She said of Roth’s boundary-pushing work, “I think it’s more fun as an actor. The crazier, the better for me.”
The first film revolved around a serial killer who dresses like a 17th-century pilgrim and terrorizes residents of Plymouth, Mass., during the holiday season.

Mason Goddard (John Travolta) returns with his ragtag crew for a casino caper that picks up where Cash Out left off—though you’d never know it if you hadn’t seen the predecessor. They sweep from a sun-baked beach wedding straight into a drone-drift cinematics sequence, chasing a digitized MacGuffin through the glittering halls of Zade Black’s Louisiana palace.
In this sequel-lite, the South’s storied gambling culture doubles as a metaphorical crucible: where chance and greed converge, the house doesn’t always win.
Travolta’s Mason, equal parts cocky philosopher and smooth operator, guides us through smoky poker rooms that feel like modern-day forums for economic desperation. His younger brother Shawn (Lukas Haas) reminds us that family ties can be as brittle as playing cards.
This film snaps between high-altitude drone shots and sudden close-ups so jarring they seem intentional—a visual wink at our own fragmented attention spans.

Horror maestro Eli Roth has lined up his next horror movie after Thanksgiving 2 and according to the director, it's a film that studios "were too afraid" to make. However, longtime horror fans might be confused by its title.
Per Variety, Roth is set to write and direct Ice Cream Man, a new horror movie from Media Capital Technologies and The Horror Section. According to the outlet, Ice Cream Man is the "story of an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results." Roth launched The Horror Section, a horror media company, in March alongside Media Capital Technologies to produce and distribute movies, TV, and podcasts in the horror landscape, according to The Hollywood Reporter. For Roth, Ice Cream Man is the perfect project for The Horror Section, as studios were apprehensive to make the movie, according to the horror filmmaker.

This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Elsbeth”
In the Season 2 finale of “Elsbeth,” the title character (Carrie Preston) wound up in jail, where she not only had to jazz up her prison uniform and solve the murder of one of her fellow prisoners, but possibly miss seeing Kaya (Carra Patterson) before she left for her new task force assignment.
Happily, Elsbeth smokes out the murderer and is freed in time to wish Kaya farewell and good luck in Washington, D.C.
Ahead of the finale, TheWrap spoke to Preston and showrunner Jonathan Tolins about saying goodbye — for now — to one of the show’s original characters and how they pulled off that dazzling cell block dance homage to “Chicago” with guest stars Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Mary-Louise Parker and Alyssa Milano.
TheWrap: Kaya is now a full-fledged detective and she’s leaving on a new assignment.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Elsbeth Season 2 finale, “Ramen Holiday.”] He had it coming! Ok, no, he didn’t. Not this time, at least. An inmate was murdered in the prison where Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) was being held in the Elsbeth Season 2 finale on Thursday, May 8, on CBS. And it made Elsbeth feel right at home in her unexpected circumstances. Having a murder to solve kept the lawyer occupied as she reconnected with eight of the perps she had arrested over the course of last two seasons. Stephen Moyer, Retta, André De Shields, Alyssa Milano, Gina Gershon, Arian Moayed, Elizabeth Lail, and Mary-Louise Parker all returned in their guest star roles in the finale and performed their rendition of Chicago‘s “Cell Block Tango,” which the series dubbed the “Suspect Tango” in the episode. The finale featured a new guest star as well: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Donna Lynne Champlin as “Mama Martin,” the killer...

The couple has worked together on numerous projects throughout the years, with Elsbeth being their latest one airing on the network. CBS is looking to extend this relationship for the foreseeable future. The network has opened up a writers' room for The Kings' new drama series, Cupertino. The network has ordered scripts for twelve episodes, and if everything works out well, Cupertino will be on the network's schedule in the 2026-2027 TV season. It’s been a colorful, dramatic, and exciting second season for Carrie Preston’s titular NYPD adviser in CBS’ hit series Elsbeth. And, on Thursday, the latest batch of episodes will round out with the season finale, titled “Ramen Holiday.” There’s a lot of hype surrounding the Season 2 finale, as we know that a slew of guest stars will make their return to haunt Elsbeth from behind bars after she was taken into custody following the events of last week’s penultimate episode. Featuring supporting performances from Stephen Moyer as Alex Modarian, Retta as Margo Clarke, Alyssa Milano as Pupetta Del Ponte, Mary-Louise Parker as Freya Frostad, Gina Gershon as Vanessa Holmes, and André De Shields as Matteo Hart, there might not be enough cells to hold the stacked cast back.

In the penultimate May 1 episode of the hit show’s sophomore season, NYPD police adviser Elsbeth Tascioni (the delightful Carrie Preston) was arrested after her efforts to catch a killer crossed the line, and now she’s in serious legal trouble. The judge, unfortunately for Elsbeth, was a great friend of the late Judge Milton Crawford (Michael Emerson), who had a contentious relationship with Elsbeth, who was trying to prove he had murdered two people decades earlier, and happened to be shot and killed while standing next to the lawyer-turned-sleuth. The Thursday, May 8, guest star-packed season finale finds Elsbeth incarcerated with nine of the murderers she has helped put away. Among the miscreants making return visits: lecherous theater director (and Elsbeth’s first success as an amateur detective) Alex Modarian (Stephen Moyer), society matchmaker Margo Clarke (Retta), plastic surgeon Vanessa Holmes (Gina Gershon), fashion designer Matteo Hart (André De Shields...

"Yes, I'm here, I've been splashed... I'm a New Yorker," the titular Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) might have once said, but, as the promo for the upcoming Season 2 finale proves, she's certainly not forgotten her Chicago roots. Following the penultimate Episode 19, "I've Got a Little List," which featured the talented Billy Magnussen as thrill-seeker and dangerous playboy Rod, one more episode in Elsbeth's critically acclaimed second season remains, and it promises to be a toe-tapping, cameo-filled adventure.
As can be seen in the promo for the episode, available to watch below, Elsbeth is going behind bars herself this week, although to catch the killer of a killer who is already serving time. However, if there's one perfect place to feature a who's who of the show's guest stars it is prison, with Elsbeth's hard work coming back to haunt her as she comes face to face with the likes of Retta,...

1995’s Showgirls, from Paul Verhoeven, is getting a 30th anniversary reissue in UK cinemas. More on the re-release here.
Sometimes, it’s the classics that get a birthday re-release in cinemas. Sometimes, it’s films regarded as, well, not quite such classics. 2024 wasn't a great year for Lionsgate, but Borderlands stood out as the studio's biggest box office flop. Following a disastrous $9 million opening weekend, the movie ended its month-long run at the box office with a mere $33 million worldwide.
With a production budget of $115 million and a $30 million marketing campaign - which saw fans of the games largely reject everything they were seeing - the studio lost upwards of $100 million.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer previously said, "Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models."
Borderlands director Eli Roth reflected on the movie while speaking to The Town (via GameFraggercom) and argued that Covid-19 and Zoom meetings were the main issue. He also pointed to the reshoots he was unable to...

2025 is shaping up to be an important year for Nick Kroll. The two-time Emmy nominee is bidding farewell to his semi-autobiographical animated hit Big Mouth with its eighth and final season on May 23, and, on July 18, he'll be part of the cast for the big-screen return of the Smurfs in the Rihanna-led animated movie from Pam Brady. Between those two projects, however, his SXSW 2024 comedy horror flick I Don't Understand You will finally make its way to theaters on June 6, and we're excited to include the film as part ofCollider's Exclusive Preview event for summer movies. We can share a new image that centers on the two main characters of the story, played by Kroll and Broadway star Andrew Rannells, who look anything but chill during what appears to be a dinner date.
I Don't Understand You stars Kroll and Rannells as Dom and Cole, a wealthy couple who...
