Dante’s Peak (1997) – What Happened to This Disaster Movie?
Image
Do you ever go back and watch an awesome 90s film only to have a dark realization come over you that films will never be made that way again? That most of what you’re witnessing on screen would be a digitized shell of itself today? Today’s movie is one of those. A film that was released surrounded by such a golden age of special effects and practical filmmaking feats, we couldn’t possibly have appreciated it appropriately at the time. Not only was this disaster movie a spectacle to witness on the big screen, but scientifically responsible enough to be shown in science classes decades later. Something you’ll never say about Armageddon. Unless your science teacher had a drinking problem. Dante’s Peak was not only up against an audience on the cusp of disaster fatigue after the successful releases of Twister, Outbreak, and Independence Day. It was...

Jon Hamm Made His Feature Film Debut In An Underrated Clint Eastwood Drama
Image
"Mad Men" was not a television ratings sensation when it debuted on July 19, 2007, nor was it the rapturously praised critics' darling it would become over subsequent seasons. While it wasn't under-promoted, AMC was best known at the time as the anti-TCM, i.e. an airer of popular contemporary films broken up by commercials. It was a big hit with dads craving casual weekend viewing from the comfort of their couch.

While I was aware of "Mad Men" during its first season, I didn't feel compelled to add it to my Peak TV diet of "The Sopranos," "The Wire," "The Shield," and a handful of other shows. But a few months later, when I saw the season 1 DVD marked way down at a Barnes & Noble, I bought it on a whim. If nothing else, I'd probably enjoy a stylish drama set in the New York City advertising world of the 1960s.

Jeff Bridges at an event for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards (2010)
Buyer Beware: Some 4K discs and streaming versions of cult classics have soundtrack changes
Jeff Bridges at an event for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards (2010)
Not too long ago, I did a JoBlo Originals video on the 1994 Jeff Bridges/Tommy Lee Jones action flick Blown Away. In it, I mentioned that the movie had just been re-released by Kino Lorber on 4K Uhd—a cause for celebration. Or so I thought. While the movie is largely intact, two minor soundtrack substitutions have apparently been made, which you can read about here.

The movie relies heavily on the music of U2, and luckily those songs are intact. However, two other soundtrack cuts—Here’s Where the Story Ends by The Sundays and All Night Long by Aretha Franklin—have been replaced. In the case of Here’s Where the Story Ends, the replacement is a cover version you might not notice right away. The Aretha song, however, has been swapped out for some generic jazz, and they even removed Aretha’s name from a piece of...

One Of Clint Eastwoods Biggest Box Office Flops Is An Underrated Crime Thriller
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood institution all on his own, having directed and starred in so many iconic films. A list of Eastwood's best roles is bound to leave a few on the cutting room floor even though they're definitely still worth a watch, and that's the case with 2002's "Blood Work."

Eastwood directs the film based on Michael Connelly's novel of the same name. Eastwood also plays the lead character of special agent Terry McCaleb, who's a serial killer profiler who gets on a case where the murderer leaves behind taunting messages for him. It's essentially Eastwood's version of "Se7en,"and honestly, it's better than you might be thinking. It holds a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but plenty of critics had something nice to say about it, like the Austin Chronicle's Marjorie Baumgarten: "The movie is nevertheless...

Kevin Costner to Michael Douglas: 5 Stars Who Nearly Replaced Ford in The Fugitive 32 Years Ago
Image
The Fugitive was released in 1993 and marks its 32nd anniversary in August this year. It is easily one of the best action-thrillers of all time, with Harrison Ford playing the lead role of Richard Kimble in the Andrew Davis-directed movie based on the 1960s TV series of the same name.

Before Ford was selected for the lead role, several A-listers of the time, including Michael Douglas and Kevin Costner, were considered for The Fugitive. However, Ford’s casting was undoubtedly the perfect choice given his performance alongside Tommy Lee Jones. Here’s who could’ve starred in The Fugitive instead of Harrison Ford.

Michael Douglas, Kevin Costner, and More Almost Played the Lead Role in The Fugitive

The Fugitive stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble, who is framed for his wife’s murder but escapes from custody to prove his innocence. The movie emerged as a critical and commercial success,...

Watch Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones Face-Off in This 1993 Classic
Image
Harrison Ford has many iconic films. When he's not starring inIndiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Star Warsfranchise, he's working on some more grounded films. Like the 1993 film The Fugitive. Starring opposite Tommy Lee Jones, the Andrew Davis film followed Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford) as he runs for his life after being accused of his wife's murder. As he pleads for his innocence, no one is listening to him, and he ends up being a fugitive from the law.

Jones plays Samuel Gerard, the man hunting Kimble down for the death of Helen Kimble (Sela Ward). With many of Kimble's friends trying to help, and a campaign launched against him to try to paint him as a villain, there is a lot working against Kimble as he fights for his freedom, and when he ends up on the run, it leads to one of Ford's more interesting roles.

Sci-Fi Fans Are Rediscovering Will Smith's Forgotten $589M Alien Blockbuster 28 Years Later
Image
Will Smith may have won an Oscar for his performance in 2021’s King Richard, but in the 1990s, the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor solidified himself as a sci-fi powerhouse. A year after he fought aliens in 1996’s Independence Day, Smith once again found himself dealing with extraterrestrials in 1997’s Men in Black, which is now surging on streaming.

Men in Black, which also starred Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D’Onofrio, Tony Shalhoub, and Rip Torn, is, as of Aug. 3, the No. 13 most-streamed movie on iTunes, according to FlixPatrol. The film is an adaptation of the Aircel Comics series The Men in Black, by Lowell Cunningham.

The sci-fi alien invasion movie comes from director Barry Sonnenfeld, who also directed Smith in 1999’s Wild Wild West, and the Men in Black sequels Men in Black II and Men in Black 3. Sonnenfeld also served as an executive producer on 2019’s Men in Black International,...

Harrison Ford's Iconic 1993 Thriller Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
At the height of his box office dominance, Harrison Ford could seemingly do no wrong. Between Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and prestige thrillers like Witness and Presumed Innocent, he was the face of mainstream Hollywood masculinity — rugged, reliable, and endlessly watchable. But in 1993, Ford took a different kind of risk. He starred in The Fugitive, a reboot of a 1960s TV drama that had all the markings of a standard studio thriller. What audiences got instead was one of the most taut, unexpected, and intelligent blockbusters of the era. And now, it’s streaming for free on Pluto TV.

Directed by Andrew Davis, The Fugitive follows Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford), a surgeon falsely accused of murdering his wife. After a prison transport accident sets him loose, Kimble goes on the run to clear his name — with relentless U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard (played by Tommy Lee Jones) hot on his trail.

Val Kilmer's Batman Is 'Forever' With This New 30th Anniversary Collection
Image
2025 is the year of historic anniversaries. Films like Jaws, Back to the Future, Friday the 13th, and Batman Begins all had major milestones worth celebrating. However, another major DC and Batman film with a heroic anniversary was Batman Forever. The film just honored its 30th anniversary this past summer. Now, DC Shop has left the Batcave to celebrate the film with their new Forever collection.

DC Shops' latest film collection includes three nostalgic items. The first pair of items is centered around the film’s stylish Batmobile. “The Car” BatmanForever comfort colors t-shirt ($27.95 Usd) and sherpa blanket ($49.95) features Val Kilmer's Batman with the Batmobile. The design also includes one of the sequel’s most iconic quotes, “It's the car, right? Chicks love the car.” However, the main star of this main set is the Bat Cuffs bracelet collector's boxset ($120). These replicate the Bat Cuffs that this more colorful Dark Knight used in the film.

Chain Reaction (1996) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
The Chain Reaction episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

In the summer of 1996, Chain Reaction hit theaters with just about everything you’d want from a ’90s action thriller. Keanu Reeves was still riding high as the sympathetic action hero from Speed. Morgan Freeman brought his A-game and his signature weapon voice. Even director Andrew Davis was a hot commodity, fresh off directing The Fugitive, which had critics cheering and audiences running to theaters like they were being chased by Tommy Lee Jones. Throw in classic ‘90s plot elements like government conspiracy, corrupt suits, and a groundbreaking scientific discovery, and you’ve got popcorn gold. Or at least you should. The script went through many rewrites, which resulted in a frustrated cast. Filming took...

Nearly 3 Decades After 'Small Soldiers' Ended, the Fate of the Gorgonites Has Been Finally Revealed by Its Writer
Image
Almost thirty years after it first stormed theaters, the open-ended conclusion of Joe Dante's 1998 action-figure epic Small Soldiers has been expanded upon by one of the film's screenwriters. When asked by a fan on Twitter if the film's action-figure protagonists ever reached their destination, Adam Rifkin answered in the enthusiastic affirmative. Rifkin wrote the film with Gavin Scott, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio.

Small Soldiers centers around two warring factions of action figures inadvertently given military-grade artificial intelligence chips: in the end, the heroic Gorgonites set out to seek their home planet, Gorgon. Of course, the planet Gorgon was a product of toy-company marketers, and never existed, but when they find a picture of Yellowstone National Park, they believe it to be the "real" Gorgon; Rifkin (whose other credits include Mouse Hunt and The Last Movie Star) insists that, in some sense, the Gorgonites made it home. As the...

Small Soldiers Writer Finally Confirms the Gorgonites' Fate 27 Years Later
Image
Released in 1998, Small Soldiers was not a heavy hitter at the box office at the time, dashing any hopes of getting a sequel. Even so, the movie was able to garner a cult following, and fans are still wondering what may have ultimately happened with Archer and the Gorgonites.

Directed by Gremlins helmer Joe Dante, Small Soldiers is the story of toy soldiers brought to life with their own distinct personalities when they are implanted with advanced military technology. There are two different teams: the "Commando Elite" soldiers and the "Gorgonites," a group of peaceful monsters intended to serve as educational toys. Things go from bad to worse when the two factions go to war, putting the human lives around them in danger.

The film was co-written by Gavin Scott, Adam Rifkin, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio. At the end of the movie, the Gorgonites are last seen embarking in...

11 Years Later, This 81% Rotten Tomatoes Western Is Finally Available to Stream For Free
Image
We're so used to seeing Tommy Lee Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger) act in some of our favorite movies that we often forget that the Oscar winner is also an accomplished director and screenwriter. One of his projects, the 2014 western The Homesman, is a massively underrated gem — but, thanks to Vizio+, you will be able to stream the movie for free as early as August 1.

The Homesmanis set in the mid-19th century and follows George Briggs (Jones), a man who is saved from a terrible fate by Mary Bee Cuddy (Yellowjackets' Hilary Swank), who conditions his rescue to helping her on a dangerous mission: she needs to transport three women across the country through a harsh winter and not let any of them die. The story is based on the 1988 novel of the same name written by Glendon Swarthout.

For the cast, Jones was able to assemble some huge names.

Before Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon Starred In This Forgotten Western With Tommy Lee Jones
Image
In 2010's "True Grit" — one of the best Westerns of recent years — Matt Damon plays Texas Ranger Laboeuf, whose pursuit of murderer Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) leads him to join forces with U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Laboeuf is a by-the-book lawman who also happens to be a bit of a windbag who likes the sound of his own voice. As such, I'm not sure Tommy Lee Jones would be all that flattered to learn he was a big part of the inspiration behind Damon's performance.

Back in 1995, Damon appeared alongside Jones in "The Good Old Boys," a TV movie that also marked Jones' directorial debut and which he co-wrote with J.T. Allen. The film was based on Elmer Kelton's 1978 novel of the same name, in which a West Texas man named Hewey Calloway witnesses his town developing rapidly, much to his distaste. He dreams of a...

13 Years Later, Will Smith's $650 Million Sci-Fi Action Sequel Is an American Streaming Success
Image
Men in Black was a sci-fi genre game-changer. At a time when many were conflicted about whether other-worldly aliens and tech-heavy gadgets could be "cool," one of Hollywood's coolest men, Will Smith, proved that not only could sci-fi be fashionable, it could always come with its own hip-hop track that dominates the music charts. Fast-forward 15 years, and the franchise might not be as favorable as it once was with critics, but the latest third installment, appropriately titled Men in Black III, is an undeniable hit with audiences.

An Academy Awards fiasco and a mellowing of his acting career later, and many are still looking back fondly on Smith's filmography, in particular, this sci-fi franchise. Per FlixPatrol, as of July 21, 2025, Men in Black III is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Starz in the U.S. Back alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Smith stars in the third installment that takes the...

Good Fortune Trailer: Keanu Reeves’ Angel Mocks Capitalism in Timeless Comedy Premise
Image
Good Fortune is an upcoming comedy movie written and directed by Aziz Ansari, starring himself, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogen in the lead roles. A trailer for it was recently dropped online, revealing a completely ingenious premise that sees Reeves’ budget guardian angel at the center of it all.

Despite some online criticism regarding the movie’s premise being roughly a decade too old, Good Fortune seems exactly the extravagant comedy that the genre needs to pull audiences into theaters. Moreover, Reeves’ angel character might just be the show stealer, and here is why Good Fortune‘s premise has me excited.

Good Fortune Pits Keanu Reeves’ Angel Against Capitalism in Aziz Ansari’s Timeless Premise

Good Fortune stars Keanu Reeves in the role of Gabriel, an angel who usually prevents people from texting while driving. However, Gabriel’s activities take a drastic turn when he decides to help Arj, a down-on-his-luck man,...

'How to Train Your Dragon' Soars Past Will Smith's Beloved Sci-Fi Movie as It Nears Major Box Office Milestone
Image
In the least surprising movie news of the weekend, James Gunn's Superman topped the box office charts for the second week running, turning in a huge $58 million in the US alone and earning more than the rest of the top 5 again. However, it wasn't the only movie to come out of the weekend with its head held high, with the Gareth Edwards-helmed Jurassic World Rebirth, Joseph Kosinski's F1, starring Brad Pitt, and Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake all proving popular once again.

The latter of this trio, helmed by Dean DeBlois, returned a strong $5.4 million on its sixth weekend and finished in sixth place in the domestic weekend rankings. Because of this, How to Train Your Dragon has now hit a global total of $589 million, split between $250.7 million domestically and a further $338 million from overseas markets. The fifth-highest-grossing movie in the US of 2025, the...

Ari Aster and Museum of the Moving Image Are Hosting an ‘Eddington’-Inspired Film Series
Image
Ari Aster is expanding the fictional town of Eddington into Queens, NY. The auteur is partnering with the Museum of the Moving Image to host the new film series “Eddington City Limits,” highlighting the features that inspired his acclaimed Covid-set Western.

Aster will be in attendance for two out of the five films that will screen; the program ranges from Robert Altman’s iconic “Nashville” to Lars von Trier’s beloved “Dogville.” The series is co-programmed by Aster and MoMI Senior Curator of Film Michael Koresky, and will take place from August 15 to 31. “Eddington” opens in theaters today, July 18.

As the description for the film series states, “Eddington City Limits” will include “movies that both directly inspired or echo the escalating madness of ‘Eddington,’ depicting powder-keg communities ready to spill over into violence or enclosed worlds so given to conspiracy and obsession that there’s no longer any sense of coherent reality.

Fans everywhere are raving over Javier Bardem’s performance opposite Brad Pitt in F1: The Movie, but long before he ever joined the world of Formula 1, he starred in a contemporary Western that’s returned to streaming charts 18 years later. 7 ‘Die Hard’ Clones – And Why They Didn’t Work?
Image
“Die Hard” is a quintessential action film that redefined the genre across the late ‘80s, ‘90s, and beyond. So, it’s no surprise that every few years, studios try to recapture that 1988 lightning in a bottle—by straight-up ripping it off. Its success is owed to many things: tight writing, smart direction/cinematography, a stacked cast, and a messy but sincere charm. But admirers and imitators alike believe the secret lies in the formula. And what a formula it is. Start with an everyman, maybe a cop, but never a supercop. Drop them into an unwinnable situation against their will.

Give them personal stakes. Let them take out a parade of colorful henchmen one by one before reaching the final boss. Tag on a happy ending, and you’ve got an instant classic. Storytelling buffs might call this The Hero’s Journey. But if you add varied European terrorists, a breathtaking yet contained setting,...

Mark Wahlberg's Most Recent Mel Gibson Team-Up Is Topping American Streaming Charts
Image
The 2025 box office has been a mixed bag. Despite a summer packed with successes, from Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake to Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, and most recently the all-conquering Jurassic World Rebirth, the first half of the year was stuffed with box-office misfires. One of these financial misfires came in the form of the action thriller Flight Risk, which teamed up Mark Wahlberg with director Mel Gibson, following their work together on 2022's Father Stu.

Sadly, despite being made for a reported $25 million,Flight Risk fell short of the all-important $50 million mark, finishing its theatrical run with just $48.7 million. Split between $29.7 million domestically and $19 million from overseas markets, Flight Risk buckled under the pressure of its box-office competition, from the 2024 overspill in Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, to the later arrivals of Captain America: Brave New World and The Monkey. Will Smith's $441 Million Sci-Fi Sequel Has Found Surprising Streaming Success 23 Years Later
Image
Released back in 1997, Men in Black changed the sci-fi game with a tale that felt as relevant as a hip-hop drama but soaked in the gadget-wielding specialty of a sci-fi tale. Starring the rapidly rising star of Will Smith alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio, and more, Men in Black went on to become not just a critical success and a $589 million box office hit, but also a champion of the music charts with its title track performed by Smith in his musical pomp.

Of course, as with any great box office hit of this ilk, a sequel was given the green light, but wouldn't see the light of day for another five years. Starring a returning Smith and Jones alongside newcomers Rosario Dawson, Johnny Knoxville, and more, Men in Black II was a shell of its revolutionary predecessor, receiving just 38% from critics and 45% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes,...

Akiva Goldsman Explains His Part in Fighting for the Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever, Describes Key Differences from Theatrical Cut
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Akiva Goldsman opens up about the fabled Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsman was asked about director Joel Schumacher's cut of the 1995 film, which has been sought after by fans for decades. Regarding the key differences between the theatrical and Schumacher cuts of Batman Forever, Goldsman referenced the infamous human-sized bat that Bruce battles in a deleted scene. Goldsman also recalled the Schumacher Cut including Val Kilmer's Bruce Wayne "having these recurring visions of a red book, which turns out to be his father's diary. There's an entry that says, 'Martha and I want to stay home tonight. Bruce wants to see a movie, so we’re going to take him out.' So he holds himself responsible [for their deaths]."

When asked about the recent attempt to screen the Schumacher Cut that was shut down by Warner Bros. Discovery, Goldsman said, "After Joel...

Will Smith's Panned Action Sequel Finds New Life on Streaming After 23 Years
Image
Among Oscar-winning actor Will Smith's greatest cinematic setpieces is the Men in Black franchise, which continues to captivate audiences three decades after its inception. While it's widely considered the worst installment of the original trilogy, Men in Black II remains a cult classic, as evidenced by its climb up the Starz streaming charts.

According to Flix Patrol, Men in Black II is a new entrant on Starz's U.S. movie chart, coming in at #9 on the list. The 2002 sequel joins its 1997 predecessor on the Starz chart, with the original film ranking 7th on the streaming service, continuing its recent run in the top 10. The list is topped by the Mel Gibson-helmed action thriller, Flight Risk.

Why Is Men in Black II Slept On?

After Men in Black became a critical and commercial smash, as well as a pop culture staple, it was inevitable that the sci-fi action film series would get a continuation.

Will Smith's $589 Sci-Fi Movie With 91% on Rotten Tomatoes Is Exploding on Streaming 28 Years Later
Image
One movie which boosted Oscar-winning actor Will Smith's reputation as a big-screen megastar in the 1990s is now a major streaming hit almost three decades later. The Men in Black are streaming kings thanks to the film's recent emergence on the Starz chart.

Per Flix Patrol, Men in Black is on Starz's top 10 movie chart in the U.S. The award-winning blockbuster ranks 6th on the list, looking up at notable titles such as Sylvester Stallone's Expend4bles, Eddie Murphy's Tower Heist and Kevin Hart's Ride Along, which occupies the top spot.

This isn't the first time Men in Black has soared on the streaming charts this year. In January, the 1997 film and its 2002 sequel, Men in Black II, debuted on Peacock and immediately resonated with the NBCUniversal streamer's subscribers. Both installments made the top 10 of Peacock's chart days after premiering, proving the franchise's staying power so many years later.

Will Smith’s $589 Million Sci-Fi Hit He Never Wanted to Make Is Quietly Dominating American Streaming
Image
It’s been a quiet 2025 for Will Smith so far after starring in Bad Boys: Ride or Die last year, but one of the actor’s oldest and most iconic projects has returned to streaming charts years later. Smith stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again) in Men in Black, the 1997 sci-fi comedy following agents of a secret government agency that investigates extraterrestrial life on Earth. Men in Black is currently streaming on Starz, and it’s one of the most popular movies in America on the streamer, sitting at #6 at the time of writing. Men in Black earned a “certified fresh” 91% from critics and an 81% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed a whopping $589 million at the box office against a $90 million budget.

Will Smith sat down with Kevin Hart in 2023 to talk about their respective careers, and...

Horror legends Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley land coveted roles in the upcoming film Covet
Image
Professionals in the used car sales industry often don't generate sympathy, at least under traditional pop culture depictions. But how would you feel if a one ended up framed for murder and had to deal with supernatural forces? You'll need to watch the upcoming scare film Covet, a unique horror film with some truly inspired casting.

Two Horror Icons Team Up

Covet is guaranteed to draw interest from horror fans as the film features a new cinematic team-up with Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley. Hodder will play the trouble-plagued car salesman trying to prove he didn't murder his mistress. Moseley will appear as Sheriff Troy, but it is unclear whether he'll play a skeptical law enforcement officer, akin to Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive (1993), or a menacing misfit, similar to R. Lee Ermey's Charlie Hewitt from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006).

Details about the film are sparse,...

The Friends Star Who Turned Down Men In Black & Called It “Brutal”—The Role That Might’ve Changed His Career Forever
Image
David Schwimmer Said No To Men In Black & Chose Loyalty Over Stardom — The Decision That Changed Everything ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

David Schwimmer knew exactly what he was walking away from. The Friends breakout star had the keys to a franchise in his hands, Men in Black, 1997, Will Smith-Tommy Lee Jones level big. But he gave it a hard pass. And he still calls it “a brutal decision.”

That’s not drama, that’s straight from Schwimmer himself on Sony’s Origins with Cush Jumbo podcast. He didn’t ditch the alien-blasting blockbuster because of Friends. “That’s not why I turned it down,” he clarifies (per Indiewire). His reason was deeply personal and career-defining. Schwimmer had something bigger on his mind than box office.

The actor had just come off The Pallbearer opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, which bombed despite high expectations. But instead of chasing a hit, he cut a deal with Miramax.

The Western That Was Voted The Best Of The 21st Century
Image
Western movies are almost as old as cinema itself, evolving out of the Wild West shows of the late 19th Century and transitioning to celluloid around the time that the adventures of the America frontier was fading into myth. It's fair to say that the genre has had a few rocky patches over the intervening 125 years or so (most notably in the '80s after the "Heaven's Gate" debacle) but these movies never truly go away –- Westerns are deeply ingrained into our cultural psyche. 21st Century filmmakers are always finding new ways to keep the genre relevant, whether it is using the spaghetti western format to tackle racism and slavery ("Django Unchained") or re-mapping the borders of a new frontier to address the ills of the modern world ("Sicario" and "Hell or High Water"). Meanwhile, the Coen Brothers used the classic white hats vs. blacks hats scenario as a...

Jerry Bruckheimer reveals plans for sequel to Crimson Tide
Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed plans for a sequel to Crimson Tide.It comes 30 years after the submarine thriller debuted in cinemas. Speaking this week, the 80-year-old Hollywood producer was quoted by Variety saying: “We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water.”Jerry made the comments during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, where he discussed the legacy of the original 1995 film and his hopes for a follow-up. Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott and written by Michael Schiffer, followed a tense stand-off between a commanding officer and his executive officer on a US nuclear submarine. ‘Crimson Tide’ Sequel in Development, Jerry Bruckheimer Hopeful Denzel Washington Will Return: ‘I Think He’d Do It’
Image
It’s been 30 years since “Crimson Tide” sailed into theaters, scoring with critics and dominating the box office. If Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the 1995 film, gets his way, there may be more underwater nuclear brinksmanship in moviegoers’ future. The Hollywood mogul revealed that he’s developing a sequel to “Crimson Tide” during an interview this week on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

“We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water,” Bruckheimer teased, without naming said filmmakers.

Bruckheimer also suggested that Denzel Washington, who played an idealistic executive officer locked in a heated battle for control of a nuclear submarine against Gene Hackman’s domineering commanding officer, might be convinced to take another trip beneath the waves.

“If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it,” Bruckheimer said.

Clint Eastwood Almost Starred In A Will Smith Sci-Fi Box Office Hit
Image
It's not easy to make a name for yourself in the world of film and television, especially when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. Some talent, whether they be actors, writers, or filmmakers, get lucky in their first few projects, while others won't get to see the fruits of their industry labor until much further down the line. Clint Eastwood technically made his big screen debut in 1955 in an uncredited role in "Revenge of the Creature," yet kept finding himself in bit parts over the next few years. Even "Rawhide," the television western career gig that got his foot in the door, would take up seven and a half years of his life on CBS. But not only would the experience of starring in those eight seasons serve as a testing ground as for his directorial sensibilities, it would also prompt him to travel to Spain, where...

Taylor Sheridan Produced One of the Worst Jenna Ortega Movies That He Doesn’t Want You to Watch
Image
“Even the best fall down sometimes”, sang Howie Day in Collide, and rarely has that lyric landed harder than on Taylor Sheridan’s resume. Yes, the mastermind of Yellowstone and Sicario once put his name behind Finestkind, a 2023 crime thriller so poorly received, it’s been digitally buried like last year’s memes.

This cinematic shipwreck paired up-and-coming Jenna Ortega with Hollywood veteran Tommy Lee Jones, promising firepower but delivering a fizzle. Critics didn’t sing much praise, and Jenna Ortega fans labeled it one of the worst performances to date. The irony? Sheridan, who now steers prestige Westerns, would likely prefer you pretend this film never existed.

With a 28% Rotten Tomatoes rating and dialogue so stiff it could splinter wood, Finestkind isn’t just a flop; it’s an embarrassment that everyone involved hopes you missed.

The Jenna Ortega Crime Thriller That You Didn't Realize Taylor Sheridan Produced
Image
As a prolific creator, Taylor Sheridan has been behind numerous TV shows (alongside some movie screenplays) and regularly directs a number of episodes of his series. Yet he still finds the time and bandwidth to produce a few projects that aren't his creations. One of those is Brian Helgeland's crime thriller, "Finestkind," which unceremoniously came and went on Paramount+ at the end of 2023. It's especially odd the movie didn't get much fanfare back then because it features a damn good cast, including Ben Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Toby Wallace, and Jenna Ortega, among others. Not to mention that its director was behind such classics as 1999's "Payback" with Mel Gibson and 2001's "A Knight's Tale" with the late Heath Ledger.

If you look at it a little more closely, however, you'll see it's not that surprising that it was dumped and immediately forgotten on Paramount+, which usually champions everything...

Fall Is a Good Time to Die (2025) Movie Review: A Promising and Lyrical Neo-Western Thriller Bogged Down by a Tedious Central Performance
Image
Dalton Coffey’s “Fall Is a Good Time to Die” (2025) follows a young man burdened by the weight of his past. It’s a classic trope that fits right into the framework of a Western genre film. Taking a cue from those classics, Coffey’s film is also about justice, redemption, and the consequences of one’s actions. However, much like any other neo-Western, it makes some refreshing creative choices. It unfolds like a slow-burning mystery thriller and focuses more on the character than the plot. It wants us to be invested in their psychological turmoil more than the cursory details of their journey. The script hopes we ponder their moral dilemma instead of simply knowing where they end up.

With this intention, Coffey introduces two characters who want to shed the burden of their past. It draws them to the same conflict but from different points of view. The...

When Grief Haunts More than Ghosts: Exploring Loss in ‘The Devil’s Backbone,’ ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,’ & ‘Don’t Look Now’
Image
Exploring Loss in ‘The Devil’s Backbone,’ ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,’ & ‘Don’t Look Now’: Until we reach a pivotal moment in life, death feels like a distant concept—abstract, almost unreal. But once we lose someone close, a family member or a friend whose presence quietly anchored our daily lives, death begins to take root. It leaves behind a silence that doesn’t fade, a hollow space that no distraction or memory can fully fill. It may not transform us overnight, but it shapes us in irreversible, often invisible ways. We may begin to realise that the true haunting lies not with the dead, but with what’s left behind.

Cinema has long used “death” as a narrative device, sometimes for emotional catharsis, most of the time for shock. In dramas like “Manchester by the Sea” (2016), the grief is raw and central, pulling the audience into the protagonist’s inner world.

'Thunderbolts*' Overtakes the Widely Ridiculed Batman Movie That Tommy Lee Jones Was “Irked” To Work On
Image
The late Val Kilmer's recent passing inspired his fans to revisit the 1995 film Batman Forever, his only time played the iconic Dark Knight. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the kitschy superhero movie marked a creative diversion from the previous two Caped Crusader films, director Tim Burton's far more dour Batman and Batman Returns. The movie also featured Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey as the villainous Two-Face and The Riddler, and according to multiple post-release interviews, the two didn't get along with each other during production. Nevertheless, Batman Forever was a commercial success, grossing nearly $185 million domestically. The movie was recently overtaken at the box office by Marvel's Thunderbolts*, which has now been playing in theaters for nearly a month.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts*has generated $186 million at the domestic box office, and is staring at the likelihood of stalling before it hits the $200 million mark. It's also...

Released in 2007, No Country for Old Men centers around Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), a Vietnam War veteran who discovers a briefcase containing $2 million in cash while hunting in the Texas desert and decides to take the money for himself, setting off a dramatic game of cat and mouse with the sociopathic hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who is hired to retrieve the stolen money.
