“Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby is back exploring another distinctive slice of Americana with “Task,” an HBO original drama series debuting Sunday September 7 and releasing its seven-episode season weekly after that. Take a look at the newly released trailer for “Task” below.
Ingelsby became one of TV’s most celebrated new creators with his 2021 limited series “Mare of Easttown,” starring Kate Winslet — IndieWire even listed “Mare of Easttown” as one of the greatest HBO series ever. A portrait of a near-suburban eastern Pennsylvania police chief, it gripped viewers with its twisty but empathetic procedural story as Winslet’s cop unravels a murder mystery. It felt like one of the few cops-and-criminals crime thrillers that actually cared about its victims.
It’s taken four years, but Ingelsby returns with a new series, and “Task” looks to explore other often-neglected aspects of American life. This time, Mark Ruffalo leads an FBI...

It’s hard to describe Netflix’s limited series “Sirens” as a specific genre, which is exactly what attracted series star Meghann Fahy to the project. She plays Devon DeWitt, a woman hovering around the age of 30 and channeling the frustration of her derailed life into “saving” her sister, Simone (Milly Alcock), from the clutches of Simone’s micromanaging heiress boss. Untangling Simone from Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore) requires a weekend of sleuthing around the Kell beachfront estate, bringing both DeWitt and Kell family secrets to light in the process.
Simone manages to evade her sister’s attempts to drag her home to Buffalo to care for their neglectful, aging father for most of the premiere. However, the sisters lay their cards on the table in an emotionally fraught scene early in episode 2 after Devon sneaks back onto the Kell estate to forcibly remove her sister from the house.

This is one fountain that people are definitely drinking from: Apple TV+'s Fountain of Youth, the Guy Ritchie-directed adventure film about the mythical fountain of the same name, is currently a mega-hit on streaming. This comes despite the fact that the John Krasinski-led film, which was released just several months ago, received mostly negative reviews from critics.
As of this article's publication, Fountain of Youth is currently sitting in the #1 spot on Apple TV+'s most-streamed movies. The film is currently sitting above other popular films from the streamer, including the Anya Taylor-Joyand Miles Teller sci-fi epic The Gorge, and the Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney feature Echo Valley. The film itself has been critically panned, earning just a 35% critics' score and 38% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this clearly has not stopped people from enjoying it at home.

Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to dominating the cultural conversation—you may have noticed the actress has been in the news lately. While her latest thriller Echo Valley continues to rack up impressive viewership on Apple TV+, the Euphoria and Anyone But You star is once again at the center of a media firestorm. Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Beast and Encounter filmmaker Michael Pearce, Echo Valley stars Julianne Moore as a weathered horse trainer whose reclusive life is shattered when her daughter Claire (Sweeney) arrives—bloodied and hysterical.
Released in June alongside a limited theatrical rollout, the thriller quickly hit #1 on Apple TV+ and continues to perform exceptionally well, currently sitting at #3 on the platform’s global movie chart. According to FlixPatrol, it trails only The Gorge (starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller) and the John Krasinski/Natalie Portman adventure Fountain of Youth, while outperforming high-profile titles like Wolfs and Greyhound.

Pierce Brosnan will always be known for his work as James Bond, but just a few years after he suited up as 007 for the final time, he led a star-studded thriller that’s finally coming back to streaming. Brosnan stars alongside Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Salma Hayek (Grown Ups), and Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2) in After the Sunset, a 2004 heist film following a master thief who pulls off his last big score, and an FBI agent who promised he’d capture him. After previously not streaming anywhere, Netflix has swooped in and made the film available to watch for all subscribers starting at the beginning of this month on August 1. After the Sunset earned abysmal scores of 18% from critics and 52% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed only $62 million at the box office against a $60 million budget.

In the three decades since producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler founded the production company Killer Films, the demise of art-house cinema has been greatly exaggerated — more than once.
“We’ve been doing this for so long that we’ve seen the death of independent film at least three or four times,” Vachon says. “And then we’ve seen it rise from the ashes — usually on the back of something that is really good or super original that nobody saw coming.”
Sure enough, history repeated itself as the latest from Killer, director Celine Song’s romantic comedy “Materialists,” starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, broke out with $51 million globally. The movie’s box office success isn’t a complete surprise — it was distributed by indie favorite A24, features three A-listers and serves as the follow-up to Song’s Oscar-nominated and critically adored debut, “Past Lives.” Yet the film...

At first glance, Prime Video’s We Were Liars and Netflix’s Milly Alcock series Sirens have different vibes. But what instantly connects them is their shared obsession with coastal opulence and how that glossy perfection hides something deep. It’s now the number three film on the infamously exclusive streamer, behind The Gorge.

Saoirse Ronan may only be 31 years old, but she’s already a four-time Oscar nominee for her work in films like Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and, of course, Little Women. However, last year she starred alongside a future Beatlesstar in a quickly forgotten WWII movie that’s still a streaming hit. Ronan features opposite Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw) in Blitz, the period drama telling the stories of a group of Londoners during the German bombing of the British capital in WWII.Blitz is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and although it’s no longer charting in America, it is in countries such as Belarus, Cyprus, and Belize. Blitz earned scores of 81% from both critics and audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $1.4 million in theaters during an extremely limited release.
Blitz comes from the mind of Steve McQueen, who both wrote and directed the film.

The 2025 Emmy nominations were filled with some jaw-dropping picks, with several actors and programs beating the Gold Derby's odds.
In our latest snap poll, readers said the bids for Zoë Kravitz and Meghann Fahy caused their jaws to drop the widest. Kravitz was previously snubbed at the Emmys for Big Little Lies, but she received sweet justice this week for portraying herself — at least, a fictionalized version of herself caught in a drug-related mishap — on The Studio. In all, the Apple TV+ show received 23 nominations, more than any other first-year comedy in Emmy history.
As for Fahy, she's a former Emmy nominee for The White Lotus whom awards pundits forecasted would be overlooked this year for the Netflix limited series Sirens. But that wasn't the case. She clearly wowed voters in her role of Devon DeWitt, a woman who tries to protect her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock) from her...

Nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday, with some key decisions shaking up predictions from awards experts as shows like “Squid Game” and “Handmaid’s Tale” came up nearly empty while surprise nominees like Meghann Fahy and Sharon Horgan made the cut.
Awards favorites like “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” gathered plenty of nods as expected, but below we’ve run down the biggest surprises and snubs from this year’s Emmy nominations.

It didn't cause too much of a stir when it was released in 2001, and critics weren't exactly blown away by it, but Ivan Reitman's sci-fi comedy film "Evolution" is actually lighthearted and fun. The film follows a team of nerdy, bickersome scientists, played by David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, and Julianne Moore, and a firefighter played by Seann William Scott, as they investigate a mysterious meteor that landed in the deserts of Arizona. The meteor contains remnants of extraterrestrial spores that they learn are evolving at a breakneck pace. It takes only days for the microbes to evolve into fungus, then flatworms, then fish. It won't be too long before vertebrates appear, followed by primates.
The lead characters all react with comedic incredulity, and their mood remains light, even as they discover that the rapidly evolving creatures could easily overtake the Earth within a matter of weeks. They will eventually...

In an era in which streaming platforms keep raising their prices, having platforms that offer free movies and TV shows is increasingly important. It's even better when those platforms include titles that we've been dying to rewatch or have kept on our watchlists forever. This month, Tubi has brought one of Liam Neeson's most electrifying action thrillers to its catalog, and the overlooked gem is even better than Taken. Released in 2014, Non-Stop is now available to stream for free on the platform.
The story of Non-Stop is the kind that keeps you on the edge of your seat. In it, Neeson plays Bill Marks, a former NYPD officer who became a U.S. Air Marshal. One of his most important flights of his career is a transatlantic one that goes from New York to London. The flight turns into a horror story when a terrorist announces that he...

Michael Bay is a filmmaker who is largely known for his high-octane, explosive storytelling. However, many of his projects as a producer have been widely different from his on-brand, visual effects-filled directorial efforts.
One example is 2025's Drop, for which Bay is a producer. The film comes from Scream franchise director Christopher Landon, and it premiered this year at the SXSW Festival to perfect reviews, but it fell largely under the radar after its Apr. 11 wide release, despite positive reviews and a strong box office run. However,Drop has turned into a sleeper hit and is getting its revenge on streaming, topping the charts on Peacock one day after its release, per FlixPatrol.
Three months after its Apr. 11 theatrical release, Drop premiered on streaming on Peacock on July 11. The mystery thriller didn't waste any time, and it headed straight for the No. 1 position, replacing the documentary The Idaho Student Murders for the top spot.

When & Where To Watch Rami Malek’s The Amateur On Ott? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Rami Malek returned to the spotlight earlier this year with The Amateur, a thriller that put him at the center of a revenge-driven spy story. The actor, known for Mr. Robot and his Oscar-winning turn as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, brought weight to a film that didn’t quite meet expectations at the box office.
Despite a cast stacked with talent like Rachel Brosnahan, Jon Bernthal, and Laurence Fishburne, the Amateur pulled in $96 million globally (per Box Office Mojo). However, once marketing and other costs were factored in, that didn’t cover its $60 million budget.
The Amateur Ott Release Date
Now, The Amateur is heading to streaming soon. The movie lands on Hulu on July 17, 2025, giving it a fresh opportunity to reach a wider audience at home. Viewers with the Disney+ bundle can also stream it there.

Ritchson stars alongside Henry Cavill and Eiza González in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the WWII action epic following a small group of highly skilled soldiers who are recruited by the British to execute a strike against the Germans. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is streaming on Starz in America and on Prime Video globally, where it’s one of the most popular movies in countries such as the Czech Republic and Finland. The film netted scores of 68% from critics and 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it flopped at the box office, earning only $29 million against a $60 million budget.

2025 has been a rough year for the thriller genre at the box office. Movies classified as thrillers, such as Blumhouse's The Woman in the Yard, have tended to struggle. Even on streaming, the Sydney Sweeney-led movie Echo Valley received mixed reviews when it hit Apple TV+.
Some thrillers have suffered despite their high-profile casts. Echo Valley, for instance, starred Sweeney (an Emmy nominee) as well as Oscar winner Julianne Moore. Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag featured Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, and was one of the best-received movies in the thriller realm.
Another thriller came out this spring with a cast led by Rami Malek. Since his most famous role in the USA Network TV series Mr. Robot, Malek has become a major star. He won an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Now, his latest work is coming to streaming soon.

Exclusive: Josh Segarra has joined the cast of Fox’s medical comedy Best Medicine, starring opposite Josh Charles and Abigail Spencer. The series, based on the popular British series Doc Martin, will go into production this summer in upstate New York.
Best Medicine is a one-hour comedy series that centers on Martin Best (Charles), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local school teacher Louisa Glasson (Spencer); however, tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

After collecting ballots from prominent film lovers from around the globe, the New York Times released what they're declaratively calling "The 100 Best Movies from the 21st Century," awarding the top spot to Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" with David Lynch's magnum opus "Mulholland Drive" in second place.
As entertaining as it is to pore over this "definitive" list, the real fun comes from poring over the individual ballots that participants have sent in. They give us an illuminating look at a filmmaker or actor's particular taste, like how Julianne Moore thinks "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" are some of the best films of the century (which they are).
These individual ballots also give us a chance to appreciate other smaller movies that didn't make the cut, like how Flight of the Conchords and "What We Do in the Shadows" star Jemaine Clement's list spotlights the excellent Iranian vampire movie...

When it comes to “All About Eve,” the Joseph L. Mankiewicz film starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter, Julianne Moore can be counted as one of its devotees.
Molly Smith Metzler, the creator of Netflix’s “Sirens” starring Moore as mysterious philanthropist, called Moore a “fan” of the film. In fact, the 1950 classic bled into the making of “Sirens” as director Nicole Kassell frequently referenced the film. “I believe that she and the cast talked about it at length and watched it at length. I can’t testify to that, but I do believe that’s what happened,” Metzler said.
The creative team behind “Sirens” joined Variety for a screening of “All About Eve” to discuss the classic and its relevance to their series about three women’s evolving power dynamics.

Steve Carell may have bid adieu to his Dunder Mifflin days, but The Office’s legacy keeps finding clever ways to seep into his post-Scranton career- even in an unrelated movie like Crazy, Stupid, Love. Now streaming on Netflix, the 2011 ensemble rom-com features a rather unanticipated Easter egg that only hardcore fans of The Office would recognize.
It’s not forced, it’s not loud, or chaotic (unlike Dunder Mifflin’s unruly office dynamics). It’s a blink-and-miss reference that proves, once and for all, Carell can never truly escape his Michael Scott legacy, and maybe that’s not the worst thing.

When it comes to creating some of the most intriguing shows or films of all time, Netflix is the Picasso of it. From making One Piece live action that broke the adaptation curse to creating films that The Academy recognizes, the platform has something for everyone that goes beyond the audience’s expectations. Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller's The Gorge beats out the latest film from producer Ridley Scott on the streaming charts.
Per Flix Patrol,The Gorge has officially taken the number three spot on the top ten streaming films chart for Apple TV+ for June 29. The Gorge is currently in a back-and-forth battle for second place on the list with the recently released Echo Valley, with the two films having passed each other off-and-on for the past two days.
Directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay by Zack Dean, The Gorge stars Taylor-Joy as Drasa alongside Teller's Levi Kane, two mercenary snipers who are hired to watch opposite sides of the film's eponymous gorge. The Ridley Scott-produced thriller, Echo Valley, isn't making noise at the top of the streaming charts anymore. The Apple-produced film plays second fiddle to Guy Ritchie's new heist adventure as Fountain of Youth makes a big splash on Apple TV+.
Via Flix Patrol,Fountain of Youth is the #1 movie in the world on Apple TV+, edging Echo Valley out of the top spot with 909 points compared to the latter's 905 points. It's the second time in the last week that Echo Valley has suffered the runner-up fate, losing out on first place to Apple's new sci-fi series, Murderbot.
Earning a limited theatrical release on Jun. 6 before transitioning to Apple TV+ a week later, Echo Valley stars Julianne Moore as a mother living a quiet life on a Pennsylvania farm, where she's confronted by her daughter, played by Sydney Sweeney, who comes to her in an alarming state amid an abusive relationship.

Alfred Hitchcock’s influence over the horror genre is towering. “Hitchcockian” is one of the few namesake descriptors used to describe (typically lesser) copycats. Film courses teach Hitchcock’s catalog as epitomic examples of tension, mystery, and suspense, while filmmakers worship Hitchcock through tributes and facsimiles. Anyone would kill to have a Rope or Vertigo on their resume, but few will—even if they attempt a shot-for-shot remake.
Enter Gus Van Sant, hot off the success of 1997’s Good Will Hunting. Van Sant’s adoration of Hitchcock is well-documented, as well as his desire to remake Psycho with zero alterations. “It’s a marketing scheme,” Van Sant once answered in response to why Universal would greenlight his remake, continuing, “because they have this little thing they’ve forgotten about that they could put in the marketplace and make money from.” It’s hardly what I’d want to hear from...
