Robert Schwartzman, who found critical success with his recent documentary about the British Invasion band The Zombies, has begun work on another music doc, this one about Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton.
The director revealed that the “Danke Schoen” singer would be his next subject Thursday night during a Q&a session that followed a screening of Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary (2023) at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
Newton, 83, was just a teenager when he began performing in Las Vegas with his older brother, Jerry, and the colorful live performer has logged tens of thousands of performances in the city — and he’s still going strong.
Born in Virginia and raised in Arizona, Newton was generously given “Danke Schoen” to record in the early 1960s by “Mack the Knife” singer Bobby Darin, and the song peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tom Hanks kicked off the year with a small role in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, but several years before he ever played Leland in the film, he teamed up with a Peaky Blinders star for a WWII movie that’s dominating global streaming charts. Hanks stars alongside Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue (The Boys) in Greyhound, the 2020 WWII epic following an inexperienced Navy commander who is tasked with leading his convoy against a dangerous German submarine wolf pack. Greyhound is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, and the film is still in the top 10 in more than 50 countries around the world, including the United States. The film debuted with a strong “Certified Fresh” 78% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 76% on that audience-driven Popcornmeter, and it did not report any box office earnings.
Greyhound was released straight to streaming on Apple TV+ in 2020, a model that Hanks has expressed his discontent with openly.

Who’s ready to feel old? Disney is twisting the knife for Baby Boomers and Gen Z today by announcing a release date for the Star Wars 50th-anniversary Re-release, coming to theaters on April 30, 2027. No details regarding the editing of the film are available. Will the latest presentation of George Lucas’s classic science-fiction film omit the filmmaker’s edits and additions, or keep the 20th-anniversary cut? Inquiring minds want to know!
According to the British Film Institute, the original 1977 Star Wars print’s color “is gloriously unfaded.” The organization notes that the print is also “one of the precious handful of dye transfer Ib Technicolor prints produced uniquely for the first British release.” Will Star Wars purists get the version they’ve always dreamed of? Will the film include some egregious CGI nightmare that has no business being added to the movie? It’s a coin flip, folks.

Disney has dated the 50th anniversary rerelease of Star Wars for April 30, 2027. No other news was made available as to whether it will reverse engineer George Lucas’ 1997 edits and additions (the Han Solo vs. Greedo who shoots first blah blah) or keep that 20th anniversary print intact.
Recently, the British Film Institute screened the original 1977 print which it noted on its site that the pic’s color “is gloriously unfaded.” That print was also “one of the precious handful of dye transfer Ib Technicolor prints produced uniquely for the first British release.”
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope counts a lifetime box office cume of $461 million domestic, $775.3M global. It’s the movie that started it all, a multibillion-dollar-grossing space opera franchise spanning films, streaming series and merchandise.

In 2008, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) appeared in a post-credit sequence for "Iron Man" where he was startled to see a man dressed in black standing by a window in his home. "Who the hell are you?" Stark asks, prompting the man to step from the shadows and reveal himself: "Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D.," played by none other than Samuel L. Jackson.
This 30-second scene -- placed after the credits at the behest of director Edgar Wright -- shifted the pop culture landscape and all but ensured audiences would start sitting through lengthy end titles just to catch a few seconds teasing the next big adventure. The trend continues to this day, and it's almost disappointing when a movie, especially a big blockbuster, doesn't feature something at the very end.
So, well done, Marvel, for kick-starting the post-credit scene trend.

The winners of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar belong to an exclusive club. But Apollo 13 star Kathleen Quinlan can boast to membership in an equally select society — call it the Whoopi Goldberg Wink Squad.
Quinlan was inaugurated into that group three decades ago at the 68th Academy Awards, held on March 25, 1996. The then-41-year-old actress walked the red carpet outside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as a Supporting Actress nominee for her role as Marilyn Lovett in Ron Howard’s space acclaimed space drama. Inside, meanwhile, Goldberg was preparing for her second appearance Oscar host, replacing the previous year’s controversial emcee, David Letterman.
And the comedian couldn’t resist tweaking the late night host right out of the gate. “So… didja miss me?” Goldberg asked the crowd with a smile. She then proceeded to launch into her stage patter, which riffed on the proliferation of colorful ribbons at that year’s ceremony,...

Netflix’s martial-arts saga Cobra Kai wrapped filming on its sixth and final season in February, but its creators have only now confirmed that they tried—and failed—to secure a cameo from two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid. Showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg told reporters they reached out before scripting began, hoping to fold Pierce into a brief “one- or two-episode arc” that would mirror Elisabeth Shue’s earlier return as Ali Mills.
Heald later explained that Swank’s representatives “respectfully passed” on even taking a meeting, a response the trio admitted was “a little disappointing”. Swank’s decision was driven partly by the recent birth of her twins and overlapping work on Showtime’s Yellowjackets, leaving her unable to commit to the Vancouver-based shoot.

Perhaps the most glaring omission from Cobra Kai's cameos from Karate Kid legacy stars was Hilary Swank. Known for her role as Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid, Swank had been expected to make an appearance at some point in Cobra Kai, but the final season came and went without the cameo happening.
The creators of the series have since spoken out about the absence of Swank, per Entertainment Weekly. They confirmed that they had in fact been in contact with Swank with the goal of having her come in for the final season of Cobra Kai, but the talks apparently didn't get very far. The show creators lamented how they didn't get to give Swank the full pitch in person like they typically did for the other franchise stars, as she made it clear pretty early on that she just wasn't feeling up to playing that role again at this time.

"Cobra Kai" did the two things every legacy sequel needs to do — it effectively rebooted the franchise with a fresh new cast that grew to be as memorable and likable as the original, fitting both the archetypes of the original cast while being new and unique characters. Miguel Díaz (Xolo Maridueña) and Robbie Keane (Tanner Buchanan) started off as sort of reverse Daniel and Johnny, but they ended up becoming so much more in the course of the show.
And yet, the show also managed to be a rather incredible continuation of the original "Karate Kid" trilogy. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) became a much more nuanced character, a flawed individual with insecurities and who grows over time, while Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) turned from a simplistic antagonist, a teen bully, into a complex three-dimensional character who made mistakes and tries to be better slowly. Indeed, "Cobra Kai" shone when it came to reintroducing villains,...

Across six seasons, Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg successfully brought back a surprising number of Karate Kid alumni, but one major name remained absent: Hilary Swank
Swank starred in The Next Karate Kid as Julie Pierce, Mr. Miyagi’s latest pupil. Although the film isn’t anyone’s favourite installment of the franchise, fans were still eager to see Swank return. The creators of Cobra Kairevealed why Hilary Swank never appeared in the show, despite almost every significant character from the Karate Kid films popping up. The Karate Kid franchise spans six movies and one show, with Swank's character, Julie, the protagonist of the fourth film, 1994's The Next Karate Kid. Julie trained under Mr. Miyagi and ultimately served as a replacement for Ralph Macchio's Daniel Larusso, who didn't appear in the movie. As soon as Cobra Kai blew up, fans were wondering if Swank would show up, and it was ultimately a pretty big letdown that she never did.

Cobra Kai was a massive hit and helped put the Karate Kid franchise back in the mainstream. Despite the success, the Cobra Kai creators still have their regrets.
Josh Heald, Jon Huwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg still regret that they couldn't get Hilary Swank to appear on the show. Eric Kripke has been able to get away with a lot during his time as the showrunner of The Boys. Turning the raucous comics first penned by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson into series form was no small undertaking, but it’s something that Kripke fought hard for the chance to do. Along the way, he learned that he had to pick his battles with the title’s home studio of Amazon MGM, earning their trust as the series progressed. During an episode of Sony’s Creator to Creator, in which he appeared opposite Shawn Ryan, the show’s creator looked back on a time when something the studio axed ended up getting used down the road.

In The Boys, real-life superheroes are revered as celebrity gods keeping the community safe. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, it was developed for Prime Video by Eric Kripke and stars Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Elisabeth Shue and Chace Crawford. The comedy satire action drama hybrid explores what happens when these heroes go rogue and abuse their powers, telling a highly entertaining cautionary tale about celebrity worship, materialism, fame and greed.
Every season of The Boys so far is dialed up to 11, teeming with absurdist-level blood and gore, hilariously inappropriate dialogue and imagery, and a wickedly fun superhero storyline. And each season features at least one killer tune from twice Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Lennertz. You have your monsters like zombies, vampires, and werewolves and then you have your monsters like Dr. Frankenstein, Ardeth Bay, and Jack Griffin. While we may gripe that Werewolves and certainly Mummies don’t get nearly the representation they are due, they still show up at a higher frequency than we give them credit for either in things like The Monster Squad or their own series like the Brendan Fraser Mummy films or the Underworld flicks. The two classic series monsters that most seem to be forgotten about either with their film output or quality of roles are undoubtedly The Phantom of the Opera and The Invisible Man. While I could talk all day about Phantom of the Mall or Phantom of the Paradise, 2025 marks a 25th anniversary for a bonkers and yet somehow faithful in tone mad scientist that breaks the laws of physics and makes not only his physical appearance,...

Mission Impossible Films Revisit Classic TV Show(Photo Credit –Prime Video/Facebook)
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning wrapped up Tom Cruise’s most iconic role as Ethan Hunt, capping off a spectacular 30-year cinematic journey. But the story doesn’t begin on the big screen. Though the film series launched in 1996, it builds on a legacy stretching back another 30 years to a classic television show. Cruise’s Hunt didn’t emerge in a vacuum — the entire Mission: Impossible universe, from covert ops to gadgets, draws directly from the 1966 show. It’s a lineage that original cast members watched with growing disdain as Hollywood hijacked their turf.
The Mission: Impossible Universe Explained
The unofficial Mission: Impossible universe dates to 1966, when Peter Graves debuted as secret agent Jim Phelps on CBS. The series introduced iconic elements that still resonate today: elaborate disguises, pulse-pounding theme music, and the self-destructing tape recorder in each episode.

Tom Cruise & Elisabeth Shue From Cocktail(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
Tom Cruise, often hailed as the flagbearer of blockbuster stunts, is known for throwing himself into danger on screen, sometimes literally. But in one instance, it wasn’t for a scene or a headline that he played the hero. It was to pull a co-star out of harm’s way, in real life.
While Spielberg once credited the Top Gun: Maverick star with “saving Hollywood” by pushing for theatrical releases, Tom Cruise may have done something even more personal in the late ‘80s: saving The Karate Kid and The Boys star—and one of the ’80s’ most iconic actresses—Elisabeth Shue from a deadly helicopter accident while filming Cocktail.
What Happened On The Set Of Cocktail
In 1988, Cruise starred in Cocktail, one of his career’s biggest romantic hits, opposite Elisabeth Shue, who by then was a household name and a national crush.

Despite the fact that critics lambasted it at the time of its release, and audiences learned to hate it over time (with a small percentage who now treat it as a cult horror), I will die as a "Hollow Man" fan one day. Paul Verhoeven's 2000 feature is a bonkers, pseudo-serious B horror that slowly turns into a devilish guilty pleasure over its nearly two-hour runtime.
However, it was perhaps fair to ask at the time: Did it live up to the high standards the Dutch director established with all-time classics such as "Robocop," "Starship Troopers," or "Total Recall"? It did not. Has it offered any profound message under its CGI and science-heavy context whatsoever? Nope. Was it mean and unmitigated fun for young horror lovers? Hell yeah! Did it have Kevin Bacon embracing his inner villain and donning a s***-eating grin all the time? It sure did.

Whalefall enters production today in Los Angeles, and writer Daniel Kraus shared a behind-the-scenes look at Josh Brolin as Mitt Gardiner.
Kraus wrote in his newsletter, “Nearly all of my books have been optioned at some point, but very few get shot, and I wouldn’t have necessarily bet on the book that’s mostly set inside a whale would be the one to get there — and attract so much talent. Not only Brolin, but Austin Abrams (playing Jay), who I’ve gotten to know as a good dude who is super-super-super serious about this role.”
Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) directs the aquatic survival thriller from a script he co-wrote with Kraus, based on Kraus’ 2023 novel.
It centers on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

A couple of years ago, Imagine Entertainment picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and in recent months the project has been moving forward at 20th Century Studios. Brian Duffield – who previously worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – is co-writing, directing, and producing the film. We’ve heard that Austin Abrams (Wolfs) was cast in the lead role, with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) signing on to co-star. Now, Deadline has broken the news that Abrams and Brolin are being joined in the cast by Elisabeth Shue (The Karate Kid), John Ortiz (The Madness), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street Part Two: 1978). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.

Today, Tom Cruise is synonymous with gravity-defying stunts that adorn the biggest set pieces in the Mission: Impossible movies, wherein his passionate love for doing his own stuntwork has cemented his reputation as a larger-than-life movie star. Few actors possess the magnetism that Tom Cruise exudes, whether on set or on the big screen, in which he dazzles with his 1000-megawatt smile and carefully-crafted, wild intensity. However, Cruise is not just a decorated action star who merely entertains in the form of thrills — he shines best in complex dramas that demand characters to descend into the depths of what truly defines them. Be it a dollar bill brandishing Bill Harford or a chaotically tenacious Jerry Maguire, Cruise knows how to navigate nuanced character vignettes and imbue any film he’s in with a telltale intensity that cannot be replicated.

Two of the biggest movies from the Karate Kidfranchise will be coming back to theaters before Karate Kid: Legendspremieres on the big screen. The Karate Kid (1984) and The Karate Kid (2010) will return on Saturday, May 10. Fans will be able to catch these stories on the big screen for one night only. Sony Pictures is getting ready to celebrate the premiere of the latest installment of the series by returning to the movies that turned this property into a pop culture landmark. That's not even taking into account the streaming spinoff that dominated Netflix for a few years.
The original Karate Kid movie started it all by introducing Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) as a young man who wanted to defeat the Cobra Kai team that was led by Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The ’80s were a heyday for the underdog. Whether the arena was the corporate workplace or the hormone hurricane of high school, bullies and their respective comeuppances were ubiquitous in the decade’s cinematic offerings. 1984’s The Karate Kid was one of the most popular David vs. Goliath offerings on the big screen, and its legacy goes way beyond fly-hunting with chopsticks, or beachfront training montages, or its litany of catchphrases. Through sequels, reboots and small screen re-invention, the legend of The Karate Kid spans decades, and continues to inspire and delight each new generation as they meet life’s great challenges.

The early aughts launched a wave of horror remakes, but they’re especially known as an era full of American remakes of Japanese horror classics. One such adaptation is Takashi Shimizu‘s 2004 film, The Grudge, based on the Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, which Shimizu directed in 2002. It’s not often the original director is brought on for the American adaptation, so this is a fascinating film even for just that reason.
In the film, “An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.“
The Grudge stars horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as Jason Behr (Roswell) and Clea DuVall (The Faculty). It was a massive hit upon release, raking in a reported $187.3 million on a $10 million budget. It was released when I was a kid,...

Tom Hanks and the roles of soldiers go hand in hand, be it Captain Miller taking his boys on a mission or Forrest Gump going to war in Vietnam and winning the Medal of Honor, every time he plays a soldier, he absolutely kills it. In 2020, he got in front of the camera to don the uniform again, and this time as U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause.
The 2020 movie was about Krause’s first mission, which turns into everyone’s last hope. Based on true events, Krause is assigned to be the commanding officer of an allied convoy that he is leading across the Atlantic during World War II, and they come under extreme threat from German U-boats. The movie was filled with intense sea battles filled with terror and missiles; after the huge success of the movie, it looks like Tom Hanks and Apple TV+ are gearing up for interesting new updates.

What were you doing in the middle of the 2020 lockdown? Experimenting with a sourdough bread starter? Learning to code? Embracing brain rot on TikTok? Well, while the rest of you were being productive, some of us were desperately trying to watch new movies wherever we could get them. Luckily, Apple TV+ sure scratched that itch with the straight-to-streaming release of "Greyhound." The Tom Hanks-starring movie followed a Naval commander in charge of a convoy of ships tasked with traversing waters infested with Nazi U-boats and other threats in the early years of World War II. It came, it went, and didn't make much of a fuss in either direction (as you can read from /Film's review at the time by Josh Spiegel). It was a peak Dad Movie™ in every sense of the phrase, and it seemed like it did its job.
