Shannon Tweed in Hot Dog... The Movie (1984)

News

Shannon Tweed

Before Landman, Demi Moore And Billy Bob Thornton Worked On A Forgotten '90s Movie
Image
Erotic thrillers used to be big business. Explorers of late-night cable TV in the late '80s and throughout the '90s likely recall the cavalcade of nudity-infused neo-noirs that filled entire blocks of programming. Many of them starred Shannon Tweed. Because sex and sexuality hadn't yet been moved to the internet, erotic thrillers were vital for a generation exploring adult themes and sexual ideas, even if they were always presented as prurient. Erotic thrillers also proved to be big hits in Hollywood. Adrian Lyne made "9½ Weeks" in 1986 and "Fatal Attraction" in 1987, each of them enormous financial successes. Paul Verhoeven kicked the doors open wide with "Basic Instinct" in 1992, a film that made $353 million on a $49 million budget. Sex became a commercial powerhouse.

In 1993, Paramount continued the trend with "Indecent Proposal," also a Lyne film, which dealt with the intersection of money and infidelity. In the film, Demi Moore...

Eye for an Eye: The Sinister Backstory That Nearly Killed Off Days’ Steve
Image
Steve “Patch” Johnson is a fan-favorite character on Days of Our Lives. The hero who recently mourned the loss of his best friend John Black wasn’t always the do-gooder that he is now. In fact, his origins are far more sinister than most fans remember. At the time, he worked for Victor Kiriakis, but eventually turned things around and became a beloved good guy. However, Stephen Nichols recently revealed that there’s an unknown, darker depth to Steve’s origins.

They Asked for a Backstory

Starting on Days in 1985, Nichols is currently celebrating 40 years as Steve. He spoke to Soaps.com about it, discussing the evolution of Steve from a bad guy to a beloved family man. The character had originally been in the merchant marines, where he met Bo (Peter Reckell). As the story goes, he and Bo fought over a woman, and that’s how Steve lost his eye.

Image
New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment’s five selections reflect the month of July 2024.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a snake thriller, a giallo, and more.

Death Walks on High Heels (1971)

Death Walks on High Heels (1971)

Directed by Luciano Ercoli.

For fans, July is dedicated to gialli. And one giallo that doesn’t come up too often in discussions is Death Walks on High Heels (La morte cammina con i tacchi alti in Italian). After Nieves Navarro‘s character’s father — a jewel thief — is murdered, the masked assailant comes after the daughter. The protagonist flees to England, however, her pursuer won’t stop until he gets what he seeks.

The Guyver: 4K release coming from Unearthed Films
Image
Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s The Guyver?” But, I suspect if you were a kid in the nineties, you know Exactly who and what The Guyver is.

When I was growing up, my parents subscribed to the Canadian version of HBO, which was called The Movie Network. The mixture of programming on the channel was eclectic, to say the least, and the blockbusters were padded out with many direct-to-video tiles, usually in the erotic thriller or action genres. Folks like Shannon Tweed, Lorenzo Lamas, and others became pretty common to see pop up on the channel. Occasionally, one of these movies would feature a bigger star and sometimes turn out to be a real gem.

With that in mind, I remember vividly as a kid tuning in to watch The Guyver because it was promoted as a superhero movie starring Mark Hamill. While that’s maybe “partly” true,...

10 Western Movies So Bad They're Actually Good
Image
Some Westerns are objectively not the best movies, but so charming that they become genuinely entertaining watches. For example, Cowboys & Aliens blends science fiction and Western action, but lacks critical acclaim and a sequel. Bad Girls provides a unique perspective with an all-female Western cast, despite predictable plot points.

Although there are plenty of movies in the Western genre that aren't as great as others, they've still gone on to develop a strong following because of how charming and accessible they are to audiences. While some Westerns boast impressive visuals, there are others that are notable for the lackluster performances of their cast, weak direction, and writing that relies far too heavily on tired Western tropes. Nevertheless, some Westerns have developed a respectable reputation among audiences precisely for their negative traits.

From Westerns with great plot twists to Westerns notable for blending multiple genres, audiences have experienced a vast...

We Kill For Love - Jennie Kermode - 18589
Michael Douglas
If you’re old enough to remember video rental shops, you may remember seeing them there on the shelves. They took up a remarkable amount of space, and yet it was often difficult to tell them apart. Their titles were mostly variants on the same few words – passion, lust, dangerous, deadly, seduction, instinct, obsession and so on, represented here as fridge magnets – and half of them starred Michael Douglas or Shannon Tweed. Sometimes people buying them would be a little shy and surreptitious about it. Certainly nobody pretended they were great art – and yet the erotic thriller genre continues to be dear to many filmmakers’ hearts. Whatever happened to it?

To explore its history, as Anthony Penta does here, is fraught with difficulties. Many films from the era are lost altogether; others survive only on decaying VHS tapes or the occasional laserdisc. In the latter days of the era...

Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland in Klute (1971)
Klute at 50: a thriller less interested in a killer and more in character
Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland in Klute (1971)
Jane Fonda gives a commanding performance in a film that avoids cliche and embraces a more nuanced view of sex work

There’s a version of Klute that sounds exactly like one of the generic sexy thrillers that popped up on video in the wake of Basic Instinct in the late 1990s. A high-priced call girl stalked by a killer. A private investigator drawn helplessly into her web. A whodunnit plot that ends with a violent climactic reveal. Shannon Tweed probably starred in that movie, and the “unrated” version would have flown off the shelves at suburban video stores.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Of Unknown Origin (1983)
Man versus Nature, Man versus Beast, Man versus Food; all mythical in status to varying degrees and most represented on the silver screen. Of Unknown Origin (1983) tackles the middle myth with a tongue firmly planted in its giant rat infested cheek and is an obsessive tour through a domestic hellscape.

Released in November by Warner Brothers, and produced in conjunction with some of that glorious Canadian tax shelter money (you’re welcome, eh), Of Unknown Origin only made back a quarter of its $4 million budget. It didn’t wow the critics either, although Peter Weller (Robocop) was singled out for his wry performance as the put upon vermin victim.

Bart Hughes (Weller) has it all; the perfect wife (Shannon Tweed, in her feature film debut) and son, a high paying job, and a beautiful brownstone in New York. (Read: Montreal. Tax coin. Beauty.) Wife and child head off for a...

In preparation for the inauguration, here’s a handy list of everyone who won’t perform for the president-elect.

Andrea Bocelli

The classical singer was one of the first names to emerge as an inauguration performer.

Count Kiss among the musical artists who won’t be playing Donald Trump’s inauguration. A TMZ cameraman caught up with rocker Gene Simmons and his wife Shannon Tweed last night, when the paparazzi asked the big question point blank: “Hey Gene, you’re the rock & roll Donald Trump — will you play the inauguration?” “No!” Tweed yelled in response for her hubby a number of times. She literally covered Simmons’ mouth so the “Celebrity Apprentice” alum couldn’t reply personally. Harker’s Hits: new on DVD/Blu-ray!
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
This week delivers up a wealth of joy. Cannibal Women! Zombies! Curses! Sinful Dwarfs! Doctor Who! So let’s dive in and see just how we’re going to spend our week!

Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death

With a title like that, do you even need to know more? Yeah? Well, it stars 1982 Playboy Playmate of the Year Shannon Tweed. And Adrienne Barbeau from Swamp Thing and Creepshow. (Fun Fact: Adrienne Barbeau played Rizzo in the original Broadway production of Grease! And got a Tony nom for it! What!) And Bill Maher, before he got all respectable with his own HBO show and all. To avoid an avocado shortage, an anthropology professor (Tweed!) heads into the avocado jungle of Southern California to confront the man-eating Piranha Women tribe. How the cannibals are affecting the avocado crops is anyone’s guess. But, hey, I live in SoCal, and...

‘Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Stars: Shannon Tweed, Bill Maher, Adrienne Barbeau, Karen M. Waldron | Written and Directed by J.F. Lawton

The men want their avocados; the evil feminist cannibal piranha women have control of the avocado jungle, what will we do? That’s right; send Shannon Tweed in to save the day. If you think that’s corny then you will totally understand what Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death is aiming for…

The government (the evil Men) hire a prominent feminist lecturer from a university to venture into the Avocado Jungle (somewhere in California from what I can gather) to mediate with the cannibal women who live there. Offering a reservation condo complex in Malibu in return of the jungle they hope to placate the feministic women and get to the fruit which is dangerously low in stock. Hiring an a-typical male chauvinistic pig as their her guide and being assisted...
