‘Animal House’ Legacy: Togas, Chaos & Enduring Comedy
Animal House (2015)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

When National Lampoon’s Animal House hit theaters in 1978, it didn’t just launch John Belushi into comedy legend, it detonated a seismic shift in college comedies that reverberates to this day. With its toga parties, deadpan rebellion, and chaotic charm, the film didn’t so much depict college life as it rewrote the mythos altogether. This enduring Animal House legacy reshaped the very idea of a college comedy.

Directed by John Landis and scripted by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, and Chris Miller, the story follows the misfit Delta Tau Chi fraternity at fictional Faber College as they wage war against the establishment. This specific college comedy narrative became instantly iconic. But beneath the slapstick and spectacle lies a surprisingly sharp cultural snapshot of late ’70s America, one that laughs through its teeth while flipping off authority.

Indiana Jones And The Great Circle Answers A 44-Year-Old Franchise Question
Image
Expanding a movie franchise with TV shows, books, or video games is a tricky endeavor. There's a temptation to answer every question that the source material doesn't answer, to fill in all the gaps and make the nostalgia overcome the new story. A great spin-off manages to feel like an essential part of the franchise on its own, and when it does touch other parts of the series, it makes the answers or crossover feel inevitable. "Andor" cracked the code to this, recontextualizing elements of the original movies and adding layers of nuance to them by revealing the forgotten and erased history of the Rebellion while also telling the best "Star Wars" story in 40 years.

Similarly, there is another Lucasfilm property that just got a decades-long mystery answered in a way that improves the source material, without overshadowing the new story. It's the 2024 game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle...

The 8 Michael Douglas movies that deserved more Oscar love
Image
Gordon Gekko has (mostly) left the building. Michael Douglas made headlines over the weekend when he announced the he would be stepping back from acting during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

"I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop," said the veteran actor and producer, who last appeared onscreen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. "I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back."

At the same time, Douglas acknowledged that — just like Sean Connery — he's going to be careful about never saying never again. "I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no."

Douglas attended Karlovy Vary to screen a restored...

Lucasfilm Reportedly Prepping For Full ‘Indiana Jones’ Reboot Following Box Office Disappointment
Image
After the latest Indiana Jones movie didn’t do well at the box office, Lucasfilm seems ready to start fresh with the whole franchise. According to DisInsider, the studio plans to reboot Indiana Jones, but they’re waiting a bit before making anything official.

The big reveal could come at the D23 Expo in 2026. Even though the last film didn’t perform as hoped, Disney and Lucasfilm still see value in the iconic character and don’t want the series to disappear.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny came out in 2023 and was meant to be the final adventure for Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. The story takes place in 1969, with Indy now teaching at Hunter College in New York City. He’s dealing with a lot, his son Mutt died in the Vietnam War, and his marriage to Marion fell apart.

Then his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge,...

Lucasfilm Reportedly Planning a Full ‘Indiana Jones’ Reboot After Box Office Flop

After Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn’t perform well at the box office, it looks like Lucasfilm might be ready to hit the reset button. According to a report from DisInsider, the studio is planning a full reboot of the Indiana Jones franchise, but not right away. They’re apparently letting it rest for a bit before making any official announcements.

The reboot might be revealed at the next D23 Expo in 2026. Even though the last movie struggled financially, Disney and Lucasfilm still believe in the power of the Indiana Jones name. It’s a legendary series, and they don’t want it to fade away.

Dial of Destiny, the fifth movie in the franchise, came out in 2023 and was meant to close the book on Harrison Ford’s version of the character. It was set in 1969, with Indy now living in New York City, working as a professor at Hunter College,...

‘Terminus’ Blu-ray Review (Mvd Rewind)
Image
Stars: Karen Allen, Jürgen Prochnow, Johnny Hallyday, Gabriel Damon, Julie Glenn | Written and Directed by Pierre-William Glenn

Dystopian futures make for great entertainment. We have seen so many of these amazing films. Films like Planet of the Apes, Blade Runner, Mad Max, The Book of Eli, The Terminator and even the X-Men found themselves in a dystopian future in Days of Future Past. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were so many low-budget sci-fi dystopian future films. Admittedly, most of these are pretty bad films. But there are some of them that fall into the category of “So bad it’s Good!” One such film is 1987’s Terminus.

Terminus has not seen a North American home video release, that is, until now! Enter Mvd Rewind Collection. They have rescued this sci-fi cult classic and have given it a chance to shine on ‘retro’ Blu-ray. And I personally couldn’t be more excited for this release.

Alfred Molina Recalls Steven Spielberg's Advice on Raiders of the Lost Ark, Says "He Could See What I Wasn't Understanding"
Image
Hollywood icon Alfred Molina recalls the advice he received on the set of Raiders of the Lost Arkfrom Steven Spielberg.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Molina recently opened up about his experience on the set of 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. "I didn't understand the techniques, or cutting or editing. So we would shoot a scene, and then I would go to dailies the next day to watch that scene, or takes of the scene," Molina said. "I would see things that I did, that I didn't, that I thought, 'Oh no, that's terrible,' and then I would come in the next day to work trying to fix what I saw before."

The actor continued when explaining his experience on set. "The focus puller would put tape on the floor, to give the actor a guide as to where to stand to stay in focus. I had no idea what that was for.

44 Years Ago, Raiders of the Lost Ark Dropped and Steven Spielberg Quietly Dodged a Naming Disaster
Image
Names are everything, especially when it comes to building a cinematic icon. Just as James Bond wouldn’t quite carry the same weight as “Jammy Danger,” or Luke Skywalker as “Larry Sunwalker,” the name Indiana Jones almost suffered a similar fate. Few fans realize that before becoming legendary, Indiana Jones was originally imagined as Indiana Smith.

In the late 1970s, as George Lucas developed the concept for Raiders of the Lost Ark, he proposed the name “Indiana Smith” for the lead character. It was Steven Spielberg who pushed back. On the occasion of the film’s 44th birthday, let’s dive deep into what actually happened!

What if Indiana Jones had been named Indiana Smith?

Back in 1978, before Harrison Ford ever wore the fedora or cracked the whip, Indiana Jones was just an idea in George Lucas’ mind. He had the concept of an archaeologist who’d travel the world,...

One Of Harrison Ford's Shrinking Co-Stars Had A Horrible Indiana Jones Audition
Image
Bill Lawrence's "Shrinking" features an incredible band of actors, including their dream casting of Harrison Ford as the show's aging but sharp therapist, Dr. Paul Rhoades. In another time, however, Ford might have shared the screen with one of his co-stars much sooner in one of his most iconic films, if only the co-star in question hadn't been suffering from a rough morning due to the night before.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wendie Malick, who plays Paul's love interest on the show, Dr. Julie Baram, revealed that she once auditioned for a part in a then-upcoming adventure film being handled by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas called "Raiders of the Lost Ark." As Malick recalls, "I get this call: Steven Spielberg, who I don't think I knew who he was at that time, and this guy, George Lucas. They want you to come in to meet them.

These Two 'Shrinking' Stars Almost Worked Together in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'
Image
Harrison Ford and Wendie Malick are sharing the screen these days on Apple TV+'s Shrinking, but they could have been co-stars much earlier. Malick auditioned to play hard-drinking adventurer Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but a schedule change left her unprepared. She discussed the incident on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast, Dinner's On Me, this week.

Director Steven Spielberg apparently saw the then-unknown actor in an Excedrin commercial, and had her come in to audition to play the female lead opposite Ford's Indiana Jones: "I get this call: Steven Spielberg, who I don't think I knew who he was at that time, and this guy, George Lucas. They want you to come in to meet them. It was Valentine's Day...we just talked, and they put me on film. We laughed and had a lovely time for, I don't know, like, 45 minutes or something."

Was Tom Selleck The Original Choice For Indiana Jones Before Harrison Ford Grabbed The Role?
Image
Was Tom Selleck supposed to be Indiana Jones? ( Photo Credit – Flickr; Instagram )

For most movie lovers, Harrison Ford is the signature face of Indiana Jones – whip, rugged and charismatic. But believe it or not, Ford wasn’t the first pick to play the now-iconic adventurer. In fact, had things gone slightly differently in the early ’80s, Tom Selleck might’ve been outrunning boulders and chasing down ancient relics in the blockbuster film franchise.

Yes, the moustachioed TV heartthrob of Magnum, P.I. fame was actually the original choice to play Indiana Jones. The surprising reveal recently came from Karen Allen, who played Marion Ravenwood opposite Ford in the film. In a candid conversation reflecting on her career, Allen confirmed that Selleck was the maker’s first choice to play the titular character and was even approached for the same. However, Tom Selleck couldn’t take up the role because of...

The 12 Best Action Adventure Movies Like Indiana Jones
Image
In 1981, Harrison Ford traded in the galaxy that is far far away for a fedora and whip to help him swing through the 1930s as Indiana Jones. He first appears in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which includes some of the coolest moments in the "Indiana Jones" franchise. It was the beginning of a new era for Ford that lasted well into the 2020s, and the franchise's success is not just based on action alone. It's about telling stories that connect the past to the present while the mission focuses on finding a way to save the future. Yes, Indiana can be arrogant and all-knowing, but he is always focused on saving artifacts that are essential in telling the story of humankind.

He's not the only character who is using history to help save the future. While the "Indiana Jones" franchise has plenty of adventures for fans to enjoy, there...

Amy Irving, star of 1976’s Carrie, 1983’s Yentl and 1988’s Crossing Delancey, is opening up about her romantic history — and admits she has a type: directors.

Her current husband is documentary filmmaker Kenneth Bowser. Prior to that she was married to Brazilian auteur Bruno Barreto. And before Barreto, she was married to Steven Spielberg.

“I don’t know how long I was married to [Steven,]” Irving, 71, says. “But we were together for 14 years — with three years off for good behavior.

10 Best Movies Set In Arizona, Ranked
Image
Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"

You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

'S— Happens': Harrison Ford Takes the Blame for Indiana Jones 5 Flopping, But Has No Regrets
Image
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny remains a low point for the Indiana Jones franchise and its leading man, Harrison Ford, ending the beloved adventure film series on a whimper. Though Ford is disappointed by the sequel's performance, he insists he has no regrets about making the 2023 blockbuster.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Ford addressed Dial of Destiny's box-office struggles, with the movie marking his last turn as the eponymous archeologist and thrill seeker. Ford admits he gambled on Dial of Destiny, insisting he wanted to tell one more story centered around his lead character. Though he takes some blame for its underwhelming performance, Ford doesn't feel he made a mistake doing the later Indiana Jones film.

RelatedThese Disney Adventure Movies Are the Perfect Indiana Jones Replacements

The National Treasure movies are underrated classics, and fans of the greatest cinematic explorer, Indiana Jones, would absolutely love the series.

Harrison Ford Talks About 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' Flopping
Image
Harrison Ford has a reputation in Hollywood for telling it like it is and appearing to take just about anything in stride. It's a personality trait that has made him one of the most beloved people in the industry, and he continues to be the guy we can all rely on when discussing the box office failure of 2023's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. If it's something that bothered him, the actor isn't showing it. In fact, his response is very on-brand.

During an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford was asked about the box office disappointment of the fifth Indiana Jones film, and the actor, who gives a very gruff and direct answer to begin his response, does admit that he's still very happy he made the film.

"S*** happens. I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell. When [nm13000055 autoIndy...

4K Uhd Blu-ray Review: William Friedkin’s ‘Cruising’ on Arrow Video
Image
After William Friedkin’s Cruising spent the better part of the aughts as the subject of earnest, if guarded, revisionist critique, how does the film hold up in our current era of representational politics and trigger warnings? And why does it feel like how you answer that question will determine which side pocket you keep your handkerchief in?

The gay side of Film Twitter had previously treated Friedkin’s 1980 ode to fisting, frottage, and flash cuts with a level of curiosity nearly equal to the fury of the disco era’s gay community. What currency could an undercover police officer’s punk-disco battle with the monsters in his closet possibly have when held against the ironic sense that an avowed sexual assaulter with a fondness for golden showers will soon be the one to usher in a rollback of LGBT gains at every level? But in its day, Cruising was...

Shout Factory is having a Blu-ray sale to celebrate John Carpenter’s birthday
John Carpenter
January 16th is the birthday of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, who turns 77 this year – and to mark the occasion, Shout Factory / Scream Factory is having a sale of John Carpenter Blu-rays! While the company has to apologize to later-era Carpenter fans because their 4K releases of his films Ghosts of Mars and Vampires are not included in this sale, the Blu-rays of Assault on Precinct 13, Someone’s Watching Me, Elvis, Starman, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and Body Bags are.

The Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-ray usually sells for $15.99. For this sale, the price has been dropped to $9.99. Written and directed by Carpenter, this film was originally released in 1976 and has the following synopsis: Isolated and cut off from the city inside a soon-to-be-closed L.A. police station, a group of police officers and convicts must join forces to defend themselves against the gang called Street Thunder, who have taken a...

Disney Just Fixed a Big Indiana Jones Problem With Surprise Disney+ Update
Image
Last fall, fans of Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones movie series were left frustrated when all four of the films directed by Steven Spielberg were inexplicably removed from Disney+. In the months since, only Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was available to stream, but that frustrating problem has finally been rectified.

Per What's On Disney Plus, all four Spielberg-helmed films are now streaming again on the Disney+ platform. The reason for their temporary removal is that Paramount Pictures still holds the rights to those movies, and it would appear that the Disney+ streaming license has been renewed. This puts all five of the films starring Ford back together again on one platform, though it should be noted that the classic films are still not available yet on Disney+ internationally. It's also unclear how long this new streaming agreement will last, which may eventually lead to the movies...

A Holiday Movie With Bill Murray Is A Prime Video Hit 36 Years After Its Release
Image
Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" was first published in 1843. It was an instant success, quickly and deeply branding itself into the British consciousness. The story became widely spread, and soon other enterprising authors were eager to jump on Dickens' coattails; as early as 1844, "A Christmas Carol" was adapted to the stage no less than three times. After Dickens himself finished writing "David Copperfield" in 1853, he began giving live readings of a truncated version of his tale. He then proceeded to read the story for live, paying audiences every year for the next 17 years.

The story of "A Christmas Carol" follows a wealthy miser named Ebenezer Scrooge who ... Wait, what am I doing? You know the story of "A Christmas Carol." It's one of the most famous, enduring, and otherwise repeated stories in the history of Western literature.

In 1901, the relatively novel medium of film got its hand on "A Christmas Carol...

The Best Scene in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Happened Because Harrison Ford Got Sick
Image
What’s Harrison Ford’s best movie character? Strong cases can be made for both Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Even Red Hulk might be in contention in the future, but there’s no doubt that Jones appeals to a broader audience. George Lucas created the character as a homage to the action heroes of 1930s film serials, and since the '80s, he has been equally adored by adults and children.

Pretty Woman’s Lead Role Went Through Multiple Actresses Before Julia Roberts Hit Stardom
Image
Pretty Woman’s lead role went to various actresses before Julia Roberts ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

After this, Julia Roberts snagged the role to launch her to global fame. It was a classic mix of talent, timing, and, let’s be honest, some seriously quirky Hollywood decisions.

Let’s start with Molly Ringwald. The teen queen of the 1980s turned down Vivian because she felt “something icky about it.” She candidly told The Guardian that even back then, she sensed a story vibe that just didn’t sit right. Ringwald’s hesitation paved the way for others to test their luck—and face similar hurdles.

So who else tried to snag the role of Vivian? Let’s just say Disney and Garry Marshall, the director behind Pretty Woman, had some ambitious picks. Karen Allen was first in the mix. Then came Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, and even Diane Lane. But each time,...

10 Christmas Movies Where The Villains Are People That Don't Believe In Santa Claus
Image
Santa Claus is very much one of the main characters when it comes to the holiday, but some Christmas films feature people who aren't fond of Old St. Nick. Also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and many, many more, the big guy in red has cropped up in many a holiday celebration, and therefore, many a holiday movie. Whether he's the actual Santa from the North Pole, or simply a representation of the idea of the Christmas spirit, his presence is what adds to the magic of the season.

There have been plenty of characters in Christmas films that have ended up on the Naughty List who didn't believe in his existence or refused to embrace the meaning of the holiday. Whether they're robbing houses and stealing presents from right under the tree, or spoiling the fun for everyone around, there are definitely quite a few characters who need...

Why Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood Split Up Revealed in 'The Great Circle' Game
Image
The intricate relationship between Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones and Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood became a central thread in the long-running movie franchise about the intrepid teacher-turned-adventurer. However, even though Allen made an unexpected appearance in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, seemingly completing the love story of Indy and Marion on a high note, one question that has never been truly addressed is what caused the couple to go their separate ways after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. At least until now.

The new Indiana Jones video game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, has now finally given fans the missing pieces to a puzzle that has remained unsolved for over four decades. While the movies have skimmed over the details of the relationship breakdown – mainly because Temple of Doom was a prequel and by the time it needed to be addressed, the...

You Can’t Not Watch Knots Landing on Amazon Prime
Image
Here’s a fun fact to blow your minds: Yes, technically, Knots Landing is a spin-off from mega-hit Dallas. Gary Ewing is the middle brother of Jr and Bobby Ewing, who made one appearance on the Mother Ship show, played by David Ackroyd before Ted Shackelford took over the role for the next decade-plus.

But the original Kl concept pre-dated Dallas. It was supposed to be an American version of the Swedish series Scenes From a Marriage by Ingemar Bergman. That series didn’t get picked up. But when CBS wanted a Dallas spin-off, Lorimar made one of the characters a Ewing, and we were off to the races! You can watch the entire series from the start right here on Amazon Prime. Here’s why you should definitely do that.

Soap Hub may receive a commission on orders placed through retail links.

10 Oscar-Nominated Films That Aged Better Than the Winner
Image
The Academy Awards are widely accepted as the most important and influential awards body in the film industry, marking some of the most critically and commercially successful films of the year and celebrating the art of cinema. Though the nominees and winners are selected by a wide panel of voters from across the industry, sometimes it is easy to look back and see the flaws in the Academy's decisions.

Often, movies that win Best Picture at the Oscars do not hold up nearly as well as some of their fellow nominees. Over the years, audience and critical opinions have shifted, and many believe that different films should have won the Academy Awards' top prize.

‘Music by John Williams’ Director Laurent Bouzereau on What He Learned About the Rock Star Film Composer
Image
Early in director Laurent Bouzereau’s “Music by John Williams” documentary (streaming November 1 on Disney+), Steven Spielberg explains that he was worried about the demise of orchestral film scoring in the early ’70s while embarking on his directing career. He was determined that this emotionally stirring, if anachronistic, format would not die on his watch, so he hired John Williams to score his first theatrical feature, “The Sugarland Express” (1974).

Williams (who caught the director’s attention in 1969 with “The Reivers”) surprised Spielberg with an intimate harmonica solo (played by Toots Thielmans) that helped elevate the movie in a way he didn’t expect. Thus began the greatest director-composer collaboration in the history of movies, with Spielberg making 29 films with Williams and admitting that the composer has been indispensable to each and every one of them.

But it was their second film together, “Jaws” (1975), that propelled their careers. With two unforgettable...

15 Years Later, Ti West's Breakout Horror Movie Is The Perfect Halloween Watch
Image
Writer/director Ti West has been a household name in the horror genre for a long time, recently directing the stylish and impressive trilogy of "X," "Pearl," and "MaXXXine." But 15 years ago this month, West rocketed onto the scene with "The House of the Devil," which was technically his third feature but unquestionably became his breakout calling card. I remember there being tremendous excitement about the film at the time in the blogosphere -- this was long before I worked for /Film, but as an avid reader of the site, I recall multiple articles singing its praises, with this one being perhaps the most detailed and effusive. I didn't dabble too much in horror back then, but I clocked the enthusiasm in the community and tucked it away in the back of my mind.

It took 15 years, but I finally got around to seeing the movie (I'm far more open...
