Fran Drescher, the actress and SAG-AFTRA president who took center stage in the recent strikes, will not seek re-election. Instead, it will come down to Sean Astin, an actor who has appeared in “Lord of the Rings” and “Stranger Things” (among many others) and Chuck Slavin, a member of the local board in New England.
Drescher, perhaps most famous for her role on prime time sitcom “The Nanny,” was nominated in 2021 and led the guild during the strike in the summer of 2023, which coincided with the WGA strike. Drescher was re-elected in 2023.
During the strike, Drescher was a near-constant media presence, as she drummed up interest in the strike and called attention to the issues that the guild was fighting for.
Additional negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are set for 2026, with concerns around health care, pension benefactions and protections against the looming threat of generative AI.

After four years in charge, Fran Drescher will not seek another term as president of SAG-AFTRA.
Drescher’s decision has been known within the union for some time. But it was made official on Friday when the union released the list of candidates for the upcoming election.
Sean Astin, who has served on the negotiating committee and the national and local boards, will run for president against Chuck Slavin, a member of the local board in New England.
Drescher took the helm of SAG-AFTRA in 2021 with the goal of uniting an organization that had been riven by factional politics. She largely did that, in part by taking the union on strike against the major film and TV companies for the first time in four decades.
Drescher had little to no experience in union politics before taking the top job. She was re-elected in 2023 on a “unity ticket,” as the two...

"Goonies Never Say Die," but they also never tell lies. One of the original stars of The Goonies has shared their candid opinion on the 1985 cult classic getting a sequel, some forty years later. A follow-up film has been talked about for a while, but it wasn't until February this year that the project became official at Warner Bros. Josh Brolin, who starred in the first film as teenager Brandon "Brand" Walsh, has admitted that he has a few reservations about the long-awaited follow-up, but, as he points out, there are valid reasons behind his "trepidation."
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his much-anticipated horror outing (which has a terrifyingly perfect Rt score), Brolin revealed mixed feelings about The Goonies 2. The actor shared his enthusiasm over the adventure flick getting a sequel, but also expressed concerns about whether it could potentially ruin the perception of the original film.

Guys, grab your treasure maps and prep the booby traps, because The Goonies 2 is officially setting sail and it’s not a drill. Nearly four decades after the original cult classic debuted in 1985, Warner Bros. has greenlit a long-awaited sequel with Potsy Ponciroli tapped to write the script.
While there’s no director attached yet and plot details are still buried deeper than One-Eyed Willy’s loot, the names behind the scenes are enough to spark major excitement. But exciting news, Steven Spielberg is returning as producer alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay, is back on board.
In case you somehow missed the cultural moment that was The Goonies, this classic followed a scrappy group of kids in coastal Oregon who stumbled upon a centuries-old treasure map and set out on a wildly dangerous, booby-trap-filled adventure.

From 2001 to 2003, Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movies dominated the pop culture landscape. Jackson famously shot all three films at the same time, and they were all released within one year of each other, inspiring pundits and critics to rethink the way long-running movie franchises were going to be made going forward. In the Before Times, studios usually wouldn't plan out multiple sequels at the same time, instead waiting for one film to make its money before starting a conversation about the next. However, between the "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter" movies, the conversation changed in the 2000s. From then on, multipart film series could be pitched en masse. This, in turn, led directly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, et al.
Because his "Rings" flicks were so revolutionary, Jackson was given carte blanche to make whatever movie he wanted as his follow-up project. Perhaps weirdly, he chose to remake Marien C.

Peter Jackson’s legendary The Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to depart Amazon’s Prime Video on July 31, meaning fans only have a short window left to revisit the epic saga that defined modern fantasy cinema. Sean Astin to Run for SAG-AFTRA President, Fran Drescher a Question Mark for Another Bid (Exclusive)

For decades, fans of the beloved '80s cult classic, The Goonies, have hoped for a return to the treasure-hunting world of Mikey and his friends. That hope is finally becoming a reality after a sequel was officially confirmed early this year, timed perfectly to the film's 40th anniversary. Adding to the excitement, original creatives Chris Columbus (who wrote the original's script) and Steven Spielberg are confirmed to return as executive producers. While plot and casting details remain under tight wraps, the original cast recently reunited for a retrospective conversation with The Guardian, sharing a range of reactions about their potential involvement in the next chapter.
The interview featured three original stars, Joe Pantoliano, Sean Astin, and Kerri Green, as well as two crew members, director of photography Nick McLean, and camera operator Michael O’Shea. The group fondly reminisced about their extensive on-set experience and the movie's enduring legacy. However,...

Goonies never say die! And for a long time, they never said "sequel" either. Now one is finally on its way... but the original cast haven't been told much about it.
Recently, the main members of the Goonies cast got together for a retrospective of the film with The Guardian. They all had a fun time reminiscing about their friendship and pranks on set, but the conversation inevitably turned to the sequel news. Nick McLean, the director of photography, was the first to ask a question that was surely on many fans' minds. "[Richard] Donner has died [in 2021], so who would direct it?"
Of course, Steven Spielberg would seem the obvious answer. But there's other things to consider... such as which members of the cast have actually been asked back. "They’ve been talking about sequels to this movie for years," said Joey Pantoliano. "Spielberg would say: 'They probably spent millions of...

However, those hoping for a reunion in the Goon Docks might be out of luck, as the cast say they are "unlikely" to have main roles in the film, but they could perhaps have "cameos."

Before America fell in love with the group of friends who set out on a quest to find long-lost pirate treasure and save their homes from foreclosure, the cast of The Goonies became real-life pals with all the real-life rowdiness, wrestling and pranking that comes with being a bunch of kids given free rein to improvise and raise hell on a Hollywood set.
Hell, even the adults of the Goonies team joined in on the antics, as many cast and crew members from the film discussed in a recent conversation with The Guardian. According to them, director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg...

Forty years on, Richard Donner’s adventure movie continues to delight audiences – and its heroes and villains. They remember the thrills they had behind the scenes
When The Goonies was first released in 1985, the swashbuckling kids’ adventure became a resounding box office hit. Audiences were charmed by Mikey (Sean Astin), Data (Ke Huy Quan), Chunk (Jeff Cohen) and Mouth’s (Corey Feldman) rambunctious personalities as the self-styled Goonies, who were desperately trying to save their homes in Astoria, Oregon, from being sold off by a property development company.
Steven Spielberg is rumoured to have come up with the idea for The Goonies when he wondered what kids got up to on rainy days. Apparently the answer was daring exploits worthy of Indiana Jones involving a dastardly family of ex-cons and a hidden shipwreck heaving with jewels. It all combined to make a touching film about the power of friendship that was also rip-roaring good fun.

There's nothing like a good sports movie. Even at their worst, you can expect a rousing, feel-good romp or a fascinating deep dive into the mind of an athletically gifted individual. Hollywood has no shortage of stories in which a last-second shot or touchdown determines a character's fate, and audiences turn up in droves to see heroes like Rocky Balboa or Daniel Larusso overcome their demons and vanquish their opponents to achieve eternal fame and glory.
Still, fact often triumphs over fiction. The only thing better than watching Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) hit the game-winning home run in "The Natural" is seeing Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt) do the same in "Moneyball" -- and knowing it actually happened. True-life tales hit harder because they don't rely on fictional elements to deliver crowd-pleasing thrills. One could argue these stories are more powerful because they prove that magic is more than Hollywood hocus-pocus.

Between movies about Christmas presents you shouldn't feed after midnight and aliens that need to make a phone call, the 1980s were rife with family films that became iconic in their own right, one in particular being the Richard Donner-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced adventure movie, "The Goonies." Released in 1985, this now-treasured, er, treasure hunt launched the careers of a handful of stars, including Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan. You must know the story by now, and if you don't, then, well, boy, was your childhood lacking. Anyway, "The Goonies" follows the titular band of kids as they find a treasure map and are swept off on an adventure searching for a pirate ship that could hold enough "rich stuff" to prevent their homes from being flattened for a newly-approved golf course.

Did you know Alan Tudyk created a character that was based on himself for the web? In the show, the lead character is actor Wray Nerely, who starred as a spaceship pilot on Spectrum, a canceled sci-fi series that went on to become a cult hit. Seems familiar? Tudyk based the 2015 series, Con Man, on his experiences on the abruptly canceled Firefly series.
He managed to get Nathan Fillion on board for the show that ran for two seasons and 25 episodes. Fillion also served as a producer on the show. It appeared that Tudyk used all his connections in the industry, bringing in Sean Astin, Nolan North, Tricia Helfer, Leslie Jordan, and Firefly co-star Sean Maher.

Stars: Ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Cam Gigandet, Marshawn “Beastmode” Lynch, Sean Astin | Written by Matthew Murray, Josh Stoddard, Luke Passmore | Directed by Jonathan Eusebio
Ke Huy Quan turns Jackie Chan in the action comedy Love Hurts, from producer David Leitch (John Wick), whose production company 87North also made Nobody and Violent Night. Admittedly, the film has its fair share of problems, but Quan’s likeability and some decent fight scenes paper over a lot of the flaws.
Recent Oscar-winner Quan plays mild-mannered estate agent Marvin Gable, who, just like mild-mannered Bob Odenkirk in Nobody, turns out to have a secret violent past, in this case as a deadly killer, working for his gangster brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu). Marvin walked away from that life after Knuckles ordered him to kill Rose (recent Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose), the woman he loved, whereupon he faked her death,...

When you think of some of the least interesting characters to become fan favorites in Stranger Things, it’s hard to imagine Sean Astin’s Bob Newby. And it’s quite surprising that while we, as fans, did not come to this conclusion, the renowned Duffer Brothers initially had little expectation for the character.
The creators of the series have previously revealed their initial beliefs surrounding the character and how it was Astin’s performance that ultimately brought the character to life, making him not only memorable but legendary in the Stranger Things universe.
The Duffer Brothers did not have much hope for Bob in Stranger Things Season 2
Before Netflix’s Stranger Things gave us Joyce and Harper, there was Joyce and Bob. Yes, the beloved RadioShack employee, whom Joyce started dating during Season 2.

Tenchi Muyo! Returns ( Photo Credit – X )
Tenchi Muyo! carved out a peculiar little niche in the hearts of many back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when Cartoon Network’s Toonami block was the sacred gateway to anime for a generation. The show took a soft-spoken teenager and hurled him into cosmic bedlam, surrounding him with an unforgettable cast of alien women, each stranger and more charming than the last. It walked a fine line between chaos and heart, planting itself firmly in the memories of those who came of age during anime’s rise in the West.

Sean Astin Was Injured During Filming ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Sean Astin didn’t just carry Frodo to Mount Doom — the man literally bled for Middle-earth. While filming The Fellowship of the Ring, Astin suffered a gruesome foot injury that left him gashed, bloody, and airborne in a helicopter. A real-life emergency straight out of a fantasy epic.
It all went down during a scene shot at Lake Mavora, New Zealand, when Sam and Frodo were bolting through the water. Astin had been wearing prosthetic hobbit feet, but one wrong step turned deadly serious. A sharp object hidden in the riverbed stabbed straight through the fake foot, and deep into his real one.
“As my right foot lands about two feet in the water… just this huge sharp pain. I grabbed onto the side of the boat. It hurt so bad,” he recalled in the DVD extras (via Cheat Sheet). Director...

The Og "Lord of the Rings" crew has been in the news cycle a lot lately. With Warner Bros. planning new live-action J.R.R. Tolkien film adaptations, everyone is wondering who could show up again after a 20-year hiatus from Middle-earth acting.
You can count Liv Tyler among those ready to jump right back into the action. Tyler is, of course, famous for playing the Elven queen Arwen in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. While the character has a minor role in Tolkien's source material, Arwen is busy in the movies. She fills in for the Elf-lord Glorfindel by saving Frodo (Elijah Woods) from the Black Riders and encourages Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) to fulfill his destiny and confront Sauron. She was even filmed in various fight sequences, including the Battle of Helm's Deep (although that was later cut during post-production).
Now, Tyler has gone on record saying...

Any project involving Steven Spielberg should be easy to watch online, especially if it stars bona fide greats like Josh Brolin, Keri Russell, Will Patton, Alan Tudyk, Sean Astin, Gary Busey, Skeet Ulrich, and Michael Spears. However, "Into the West" -- a Western drama the "Jurassic Park" director produced for Dreamworks Television and TNT in the mid-2000s -- proves that even star-studded Spielberg ensemble pieces can get lost in the ether.
"Into the West" is an ambitious project, with all six episodes clocking in at almost two hours each and covering a lot of American history. What's more, the series tapped some notable directors to helm the saga, including horse opera veteran Simon Wincer, who directed one of the all-time great Westerns in "Lonesome Dove."

There’s something about treasure hunting movies that just hits differently. Maybe it’s the dusty maps, ancient traps, or the characters who clearly have no plan but still survive it all. These movies have it all, booby traps, secret caves, double-crossing sidekicks, and the occasional cursed artifact. Some go full Indiana Jones mode, while others mix in comedy, mystery, or even a little romance, because why not fall in love while dodging death?
The best ones make you feel like you’re right there, sneaking through jungles or deciphering clues on a centuries-old scroll. And let’s not forget the over-the-top villains who always monologue too long. Whether it’s gold, lost cities, or something weirdly glowing in a box, treasure movies serve drama, chaos, and adventure in one messy, glorious ride.
So, grab your (pretend) fedora and scroll through this list of the best treasure-hunting flicks to ever grace our screens.

The Conners ended its run this week after seven impressive seasons and what can only be described as a start that grew out of a very controversial situation. What became a spinoff series of Rosanne originally hit ABC as a revival of the hit show, with comedian Roseanne Barr once again leading the Conner family. As quickly as the revival became a hit, Roseanne was abruptly canceled after Barr posted a tweet many perceived to be racist. The concept was retooled to then become The Conners and Roseanne was unceremoniously written out, something that she spoke out about in a blunt manner on more than one occasion. So, how does she feel now that The Conners is over? Despite initial hostility, her reaction to the series coming to an end is probably not one that many expected.
Per TMZ, Roseanne's son and rep, Jake Pentland, spoke about her feelings regarding...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Conners Season 7, Episodes 5 & 6.] The Conners bid viewers adieu in the series finale of ABC‘s Roseanne spinoff, and it was a tearful endeavour as the TV family said goodbye for the last time. Delivered in two parts, the finale kicked off with Dan (John Goodman) preparing for the deposition that could win him and his family big bucks for the wrongful death of matriarch Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). Meanwhile, Mark (Ames McNamara) is presented with the opportunity to join a cybersecurity training program with a promise of employment. The catch? It’s in New York City. Darlene (Sara Gilbert) isn’t a big fan of this idea, especially when Mark tells his mother he doesn’t plan to attend college, leaving the duo on opposing sides of the argument. Meanwhile, Becky (Lecy Goranson) and Tyler (Sean Astin) decide to combine their funds and struggle to decide what they’ll spend...

Warning: Contains spoilers about the two-part series finale of The Conners, which aired April 23rd.
Between Roseanne and its sequel/spin-off The Conners, there were well over 300 episodes in the Lanford-verse before the Season Seven premiere of The Conners last month. That already would have been a lot of old story to wrap up before the show’s producers started introducing new plotlines — and it all had to be dispensed with in just six 21-minute episodes. A wrongful-death lawsuit over Roseanne’s fatal overdose pre-Conners gave the abbreviated seventh season a dramatic through-line, and viewers hoped that we’d be seeing them off into a more comfortable (imaginary) future. But if the ending of The Conners hadn’t been bittersweet, it wouldn’t have been The Conners: no franchise has ever portrayed struggle better.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of “The Conners,” streaming on Hulu as of April 24.
After 37 years, the adventures of Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and the rest of the family have come to an end with the series finale of “The Conners” on ABC Wednesday night. And although those kinds of goodbyes can be tricky, especially with a show that has so much history — both on-camera and off — executive producer Dave Caplan tells Variety, “We felt a tremendous responsibility to get this right.”
In a way, Caplan and fellow executive producers Bruce Helford and Bruce Rasmussen were aware of the pitfalls that an end of a series can present, keeping it storyline-driven and character-driven. And balancing keeping the conclusion sentimental when it should be, but funny as well. They felt like the “stewards” of the show and the characters, they say.

Stranger Things has arrived on Broadway, as Tuesday night marked the opening of Stranger Things: The First Shadow in New York after previously taking over London’s West End.
The show, written by Kate Trefry — who is also a writer on the Netflix series — serves as a prequel to the events on TV; it’s set in Hawkins in 1959, and features the high school versions of characters from the series, including Winona Ryder’s Joyce, Sean Astin’s Bob Newby and David Harbour’s Hopper. Their high school experience is upended by the arrival of a new student, Henry Creel (who was introduced in the last season), as he begins experimenting with newfound powers. Show creators the Duffer Brothers executive produced the stage production, and teased how it will link up with the upcoming fifth and final season of the TV show.
